Time Machine won't let me back up an external hard drive

Hello,
I am running time machine to backup onto a 500GB USB drive and keep my iTunes library on a firewire 250gb drive. When I looked in time machine options in system preferences I found that my firewire disk is already listed as 'do not back up'. I want it backed up and don't seem to be able to remove it from that list. Anyone have an ideas why?
Cheers
Steve
PS First ever post!

Are you referring to the drive used for backups, or the drive I want to back up? When I first used Time Machine, my external drive (used to house my itunes library) was on the exclude list. I easily removed it and the TM window reflected the additional contents (indicating a backup of about 75G (27 on internal drive, remainder on external). But backups are being done only on the contents of the internal drive.
I too have re-included the external drive on the exclude list, then removed it. No help. Do I have to reformat my external drive and lose all of my itunes music?
thanks

To add to Niel's comment bear in mind that if you have a backup copy on an external HD and later delete the orignals on your Mac HD you will then only have one copy - so no backup.
If the pictures are precious you should have at least two copies, and ideally another copy kept off site,

  • Photos. They are on my macBook, backed up on time machine. Copied them (hours and hours) to external hard drive. They are now in alphabetical order (19,000  of them) NOT IN THEIR EVENTS or date order-and have been taken with different cameras- help!!!!!!

    Photos.
They are on my macBook, backed up on time machine. There are 19,000+ of them, some rescued from a pc crash- which I used the nifty iPhoto to put back into date order.
I want to take them all off my laptop, now............as I need to use it for WORK!!
Copied them (hours and hours) to another external hard drive.
They are now in alphabetical order (all 19,000+ of them) NOT IN THEIR EVENTS or date order. (-They have also been taken with different cameras over the years and some of the generic camera numbering remains.)
I have tried to copy them (only a few as an experiment)  one event at a time, but that again "opens up" the Event "folder" and tips them out as individuals and therefore just lists image letters and numbers alphabetically.
    How can I copy
the whole library still in  "Events" to an external hard drive?
the folders/albums I have already made on to this hard drive?
and how can I add to this back up monthly, again keeping events and folders separate and updated?
Mac is so user friendly - there must be a way.........
    Thanks

UPDATE : I have re-installed from disk, various apps that were no longer functioning such as iLife, iWork etc. So, I now can access my photos again.
Also, I had to re-install all the software for my printer ( Stylus Pro 4880 ) and reset it so the printer is working again.
Photoshop CS4 won't open. I think I will have to get in touch with Adobe as basically, I guess they have a built-in "blocker" which prevents me from opening the app as the license is for only 1 user and having re-installed the OS, there are now, in effect, 2 users ( Me and Me 1, I think ).
So, having added on a new external HD, Time Machine has made a copy of most of the files, folders, apps etc onto the external HD. The internal HD is still nearly full ( 220 GBs out of 232 GBs ).
I am guessing the way to go now in order to free up space on the internal HD is to delete/trash older photos from my iPhoto library and hope that if needed, I will be able to access them on the external HD.
Am I correct ? Please advise before I do something I will regret.
    Thanks, Sean.

  • Anyone got Issue with Time Machine on Mac OS 10.9.5 on External Hard Drive?

Mac Book Air June 2012, Mac OS 10.9.5 (fully updated) external Hard Drive, USB 3
    Dear all,
Just realized that my regular Time Machine back-ups don’t work anymore: despite several back-ups, Time Machine tells me that I did not back-up for 10 days but I did not get any error message.
Suspected an issue with my external Hard Drive, so took a brand new one 1TB, labelled Mac OS, USB 3, sold at Apple Corner.
Registered this new drive in Time Machine, started a full back-up of about 350 Gb, and it is hanging up, 13Kb copied in one hour.....
This become very critical as I don’t have back-up since a few days....
Your help will be upmost appreciated.
    Best regards to all,
    Bernard

Temporarily turn Time Machine "off". Make sure a backup is not in progress, then rebuild the Spotlight database according to the following instructions: Spotlight: How to re-index folders or volumes
(summary: drag the entire source volume to the exclusions list, click OK, then remove it by clicking the minus ("–") button.)
This will have no effect on any existing backups.
Let Spotlight finish reindexing and then turn Time Machine back "on". Select "Back Up Now".

  • Itunes won't let me add files from external hard drive

I've been having this problem with my external hard drive and I don't know if it's my computer or iTunes, but I would appreciate any help.
Recently, for some reason, all my songs went missing on iTunes and iTunes would freeze a lot. I reinstalled iTunes and now it's working fine. The problem is, I store my music on an external hard drive and I'm trying to add my files back by going to "Add Folder to Library", but it works every time I do it.
At first, I thought it was freezing because my drive is so big, so I did it folder by folder (organized by artists) and it will work fine for small folders, but if it's a folder with like more than one album, iTunes will crash. At first, I thought something was wrong with one of the music files, but that's not it because it happens with any large folder.
I used to use iTunes Updater, which would update all your songs for you, but now that program doesn't work with the latest version of iTunes. Thanks for any help.

This might be worth a shot - basically seeing if Vista permissions could be the culprit.
Give yourself FULL control and ownership of the exHD, let's call it M:
How to Take Ownership and Grant Permissions in Windows Vista
Take control of the top level folder and ALL subfolders.
Try creating a new blank ITL file on M: by pressing *and holding* the shift key while itunes starts. See if you can add everything again.

  • Time Machine will not delete the oldest backup when external hard drive is full

I may not understand this timemachine thing, but....
I have macbook pro, 15", mid 2011, mountain lion......I have a WD Passport Studio I have ben using to back up with time machine periodically. I tried to back up today and it says i do not have enough room on my external drive. I tought the time machine automatically deletes the oldest back up?

I agree with Linc's response but you also have to realize that it will keep the oldest backup and start removing snapshots if it can.
It is my undestanding that time machine does what is called a full backup the first time and then the snapshots done after that are changes since the first backup. I'm not sure if time machine then does periodic backups or just snapshots.

  • Time Machine Backup Interrupted. Im using a Sony External Hard drive

i have a white macbook, version 10.6.8. I wanted to back up my mac so i connected my Sony External Hard Drive and used time machine. About a quarter way through the back up, i get this message saying to "You need to restart your computor. Hold down the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again." I cannot press/move the mouse in anyway or do anything when this message comes up. When i open my mac again a window comes up saying "You shut down your laptop because of probelm". The backup stops and fails. This has happened 3 times now and has never happened until i tried to back up . What seems to be the problem and what should i do to fix it?

Hi. This is called a kernel panic. You should make sure your software is updated, including any third party software you have. Keep in mind any software you may have recently installed. You may have to erase any  files that installed in the backup drive as they could be corrupted. Read this.  http://support.apple.com/en-us/TS3742

  • Hi, Question about secure empty trash. I moved some Time Machine backup files to the trash from an external hard drive. Now I can't secure empty trash. It starts, finds 74,003 files, and does nothing. The external hard drive shows it's empty, but it isn't

I moved some time machine backup files from an external USB hard drive to the trash. Tried secure empty trash. It counts 74,003 items, then just sits there. The external hard drive window shows it's empty, but the info pane says it only has 50G of memory left. I left the secure empty trash on over night. It did nothing. Ideas?
    Thanks,
    Ron

Relaunch the Finder, then from the Finder menu bar, select
    Finder ▹ Preferences ▹ Advanced
and uncheck the box marked Empty Trash securely. Try again to empty the Trash.

  • How to completely delete all backed-up time machine files but not other files in my external hard drive?

I use a 500G WD as my external.. I have documents and movies there that i do not want to delete. Simply i just want to delete my time machine files completely and for my mac to not recognised it as a time machine HD.. TY guys  p.s. A video would be nice

If you have the external HD setup as one partition, you cannot delete only the TM files as a unit.  You will have to use the brute force method of deleting directory by directory.
If you have the drive partitioned into a TM backup partition and another partition for your other work, you can simply reformat the TM backup partition.
So, the first question is, how is your drive setup, as one or as two partitions?

  • I have a problem after upgarding the OS Yosemite and time machine. It says not enough space on external hard drive when I should write over older backups? thanks. late 2009 imac 3.06 8GBimac

    Hey rgmhughes7,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like the Time Machine backup disk is full. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

  • The time machine deleted the data I had in my external hard drive

I had achived data from another computer (windows platform) and I decided to back up my data of my mac book from using time machine. After I did that I lost all the data I had before.
My question now is how do I restore the old data back I had in it?

    Hey guys,
Recently I saw one of turingtest2 posts regarding iPod and it was interesting.
turingtest2 I believe you are more confident than me and I would like to know if you could give me any idea to solve my above problem if you see this message.
    Cheers mate,

  • Time Machine: Can I backup to more than 1 external hard drive?

would anyone know about this: i have a TM at home in boston which i use when i am there; however, now i am in taiwan where i will have a second TM to use here: apart from naming the two TMs differently on the laptop (macbookpro, tiger), is there anything i should look out for? with many thanks, steven totosy

Other users have successfully backed up their Mac to more than one Time Machine drive. As you stated, name them differently. You also need to switch TM drives, but that's only once after you've arrived at your new location. Note that after extended absences, TM may not want to continue with a backup and force you to create a new backup. I don't recall how much time has passed, but someone has stated 10 days, but I cannot confirm that.

  • Does Time Machine also back up wired external hard drives?

I apologize if this is already answered; I can't find the answer. But I am running out of space on my hard drive, and I am thinking about moving my music and movies (ie multi-media content in iTunes) to an external hard drive. I am torn between two options. 1) use my existing external hard drive (LaCie d2 Quadra 1T) and partition it for Time Machine and a Multi-media folder, or 2) just buy another external hard drive, likely another LaCie and dedicate it for my multi-media. I lean towards keeping my back-up hard drive as is -- for one purpose so as to minimize loss of data should (when) the unthinkable happen. Anyhow, I'd like to know whether Time Machine can be told to include my 2nd external hard drive in its regular back-ups. Likewise, if I partition my current LaCie, can I tell Time Machine to back up my multi-media folder? Any info or links you can provide is appreciated. Regards.

I appreciate the comment. Is there a way to find out whether Time Machine backs up external hard drives without having to buy one and plug it in to see if it is listed in the Time Machine pane of System Preferences? If I could read between your lines, I assume you are saying is Time Machine is "smart" enough to include external hard drives provided that I don't exclude it. Right? PS - I will be using the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.

  • New MBP and Time Machine won't let me search out my NAS to save too. Any ideas?

When trying to set up time machine and using a NAS drive in my wireless network Time Machine won't let me search and select the storage device. I can access the storage and save/retrieve files so I can see and use it. Anyone got any ideas please?
    Brand New MBP running Mavericks.

I'm having the same issue with Mavericks - and it appears to be Mavericks specific. I don't have this problem with Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion can see both of my NAS drives.
Additionally, with Mavericks Time Machine won't see your backup properly. It may only see the most recent backup. Though in my case it wouldn't load either one (I had two on different drives). To recover some files I had to use a machine running Mountain Lion to mount a backup file then I was able to extract the files to a USB drive, which I then moved to the Mavericks machine.
I've tried using terminal to run tmutil commands without luck. I have mounted the volume I want to use - it shows when I do "ls -l /Volumes". Then when I do sudo tmutil setdestination /Volumes/VOLUMENAME the system seems to go into an infinite loop. I have to ^c to get back to terminal.
Clearly with Time Machine on Mavericke Apple has really screwed the pooch.

All you need to upgrade the iBook for Tiger is another 128 MBs of RAM. It has both Firewire and USB ports. You do want to upgrade it for what you plan to do. The problem you may continue to have, however, may be due to the fact that the age of the computer is such the disk controller does not support hard drive volumes larger than 128 GBs, which is probably the reason the drive won't mount.
The reason you get DU errors is likely because the drive was formatted using the Intel Tiger version of DU, while you were using the Jaguar version. That's a definite no-no.
