Time out of Time Capsule - even with Ethernet

My 500G Time Capsule since yesterday evening refuses to work for longer than a few minutes, which is far too little for any backup.
The problem first was seen when I used it with WiFi. I then connected the TC directly with ethernet to my MacBook. Initiated a backup. After some time, it refuses to respond any more.
Click on the TC icon in the Finder column view, and nothing comes up.
Try cd /Volumes/tcapsule in the Terminal, and the terminal window freezes.
Open the TC preferences and System Preferences freeze.
I tried resetting the TC with a paper clip.
I tried restarting the TC. After that, it works for a few more minutes, before it freezes again.
I tried removing the file com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.
I tried restarting the Mac umpteen times. It usually freezes as well when the TC is frozen.
I used Disk Utility to repair the Mac's harddisk.
I used Disk Utility to try to repair the image on the TC, dragging its icon to Disk Utility. However, it gives up - probably when the TC times out.
Does anyone have any idea what I could do in addition to those things, while keeping the old backups on the TC? I would prefer not to reformat the TC.
A new backup to third party Lacie HD worked fine, so I guess the Mac is ok, and the problem really is with the TC.

go system preferences > time machine and turn TM off. click on +change disk+ and select none.
next, delete this file HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.
restart your machine, go system preferences > time machine and turn TM back on. click on +change disk+, re-select your backup volume und click +use for backups+.
Yep, that's pretty much what I did, as described in my initial post. I actually followed your exact steps again, but not luck.
download and install Time Machine Buddy if you don't have it already. start a backup and see what TM buddy reports.
Done that too, but the errors do not help me very much. A typical session may look like this:
Starting standard backup
Network destination already mounted at: /Volumes/tcapsule
Disk image /Volumes/tcapsule/Magnus Lewan’s MacBook_002332b4fbc4.sparsebundle mounted at: /Volumes/Backup of Magnus Lewan’s MacBook
Backing up to: /Volumes/Backup of Magnus Lewan’s MacBook/Backups.backupdb
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: blanco
Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:must scan subdirs|new event db|
No pre-backup thinning needed: 23.55 GB requested (including padding), 24.83 GB available
Waiting for index to be ready (100)
And then nothing more.
The last one was somewhat more descriptive, but still no reason why things fail, and of course no suggested remedy:
Starting standard backup
Network destination already mounted at: /Volumes/tcapsule
Error while checking destination cookies: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=260 UserInfo=0x100120690 "The file “.002332b4fbc4” couldn’t be opened because there is no such file." Underlying Error=(Error Domain=NSPOSIXErrorDomain Code=2 "The operation couldn’t be completed. No such file or directory")
Creating disk image /Volumes/tcapsule/blanko.sparsebundle
Error 22 creating backup disk image
Failed to create disk image
Backup failed with error: 20
It seems to first fail to read the previous sparsebundle and then it tries to create a new one. This may fail because the disk is full, but it should be able to open the previous one.

  • HT4259 Direct Connect  Two Time Capsules together with Ethernet.

I have TWO Time Capsules  ( One upstairs providing Time Machine backup to IMAC #1 )  and  (One downstairs providing Time Machine Backup to IMAC#2)
I would like to extend the wireless network portion of this to reach the whiole house with ONE wireless network. I know I can EXTEND the network, but my question is can Connect the two time capsules together via Ethernet cable ( my house is pre wired).  This will essentially ensure that the two devices have a solid connection instead of relying on WIRELESS.
Any reasons to NOT do this?
Time Machine will be used differently on the two devices.
    Thanks

  • Fire fox times out every time I do Google search, I have Juno as a dial up for a spare and I get Norton with that.

Since reinstalling Juno i have not been able to use search from Mozilla, It times out all the time. The juno site allows the search to continue. I would like to stay with Mozilla since all my favorite are there. My favorites do not have this problem only when I google a new inquiry.

Unfortunately, using a Dial-up connection will result in alot of time-outs in this day's internet. However, I'll post a few potential fixes below, that might help alleviate the issue.
First, try to reset Firefox. [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems]]. This simple step will eliminate many Firefox problems with only one click.
A few other basic trouble shooting things you can try is this:
Run all Windows Updates, install all needed service packs, etc.
Update your graphics driver (Firefox uses your graphics card for some rendering, and an out of date graphics card driver can cause problems. [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]

  • Trying to login to Ihealth app but times out each time

HI, I purchased a Ihealth wireless activity tracker, downloaded the app and tried to connect via Bluetooth, the device won't connect and all I get is network timed out. I increased the time out in the router but it still times out very quick. The ihealthlabs are no use what so ever, they just ignore people. i took the device back to the shop and they gave me another to try, but this one is even worse as it will not connect via Bluetooth.
i Would be interested if anyone else has one of these and has solved the problem, or is it the app that's at fault.
    Many Thanks

    <Edited By Host>

Hi, Many thanks for the help. After going back to Maplins a guy named Jay said let him have a look, and after 5 mins he had it working. First he turned off Bluetooth on the phone, he deleted both apps health and the updated app, and downloaded just the one standard app. He then put my email address and password in, it connected first time, and asked to switch Bluetooth on, it was then all working, but came up with did I want to download the updated version, which was fine. Just make sure the app you use is the blue one and not the orange one, as it updates through the standard one.
hope this helps anyone else having the same problem, as I said the chap who helped me was Jay at the Hemel Hempstead branch of Maplins.
    Many Thanks

  • Connection time out, connection time out

i've got a mac mini in my living room wich is hooked up to a modem and one wich is standing in my bedroom.
When i try to connect my bedroom mini by wifi it wil tell me: "connection time out" and i haven't got a clue on how to resolve this.
    please help, thnx in advance!
i haven't got an external wifi transmitter if that might be of interest

Are you trying to share the Internet connection from one Mac mini to the other? That is, the mini in the living room that is connected to the Internet modem by Ethernet to share this Internet connection via the mini's AirPort card to the mini in the bedroom ... correct?
If so, approximately how far away from each other are the minis and how many walls, ceilings, floors, etc. are between them?

  • SMS 2008 Server time out same time every hour

Our server times out at the same time every hour. Any computer connected to our network at exactly xx:53, any program or anything you are attempted to do goes to the loading circle and says not responding. It stays that way until xx:54. Every hour, every
day. However, nothing shows up on the error reports.

    Hi MNQWolfe,
Based on your description, I suggest that you should firstly check if there any program or feature (such as antivirus program, update, backup and so on) started
working at that time. Also, please monitor the Task Manager or Resource Monitor to check if any process was started at that time.
In addition, it seems to be a network issue. Please run a sniffer on the server. You can use Microsoft Network Monitor 3.4 to monitor and then check ARP messages
    and so on.

  • How can I backup my mac on a Time Capsule (connected with ethernet), without any user logged on the mac?

Time Machine by default does not run when no user is logged in, there's some way to let backups run without any user logged on the mac?
I need to backup 3 iMac connected through ethernet network to a Time Capsule.
    Some hint?

If you use eithernet for your main connection then just plug the TC bridged into the network.
If you use wireless for your internet connection then you can use the TC isolated from the network by ethernet.. but this is really only convenient on a desktop Mac.
The instructions I put in this thread with screenshots.. see near the bottom.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30
It is a bit tricky so if you have questions ask back here.
Just to say a USB for firewire external drive is faster and more reliable than a TC.. cheaper to buy as well.. although since you already have the TC that is not a concern.. but you can ebay the TC and buy a bigger and better external drive with the proceeds.

  • Apple tv & time capsule problem with ethernet

hi there. my apple tv and time capsule are working just fine on wifi. i want to stream movies stored on the TC faster via ethernet. i plug in the ethernet cable which works fine on other hardware and i cant access the movies. connected via DHCP and also tried a manual IP - still no joy.
    HELP.....

I'm not exactly sure what an orange live box is, assume it's a router, is this the router that you mention or another box. What is apparent is that you have at least 2 routers and maybe three (no big issue - I have 6), what is important is that only one of them is issuing IP's.
You can do this either by DHCP or manually (I choose DHCP) from the first device in the chain, ie the one that your telephone cable plugs into, all other routers should be set up in bridging mode (or maybe WDS, but I doubt it from what you have told me)
Can you confirm this is your set up.

  • Heartbeat time outs some times caused by clocks-out-of-sync?

Heartbeat timeouts are usually caused by the java socket communication between the master and its slaves being slow (or dead).
This slowness in turn can be caused by a system being overloaded, something than can easily happen when we're running out of memory.
Memory problems can be caused by running against file system cache, which in turns eats up all memory, etc.
Some times the java socket connection between the master and remote hosts just is slow, also causing heartbeat timeouts.
Today I had a case where, in a multi-host situation, one of the remote hosts had his clock set five minutes early.
On the master this resulted in lots of 'slow getmessage' warnings telling you that it took longer than five seconds between the time the message was sent and that it was received. These timings use both the master and the remote host's current clock values.
In above case that always meant that every message was considered five minutes late.
Then, further on during the test the remote system's clock was reset and increased by five minutes.
That was it for the heartbeat timer, because it also uses the system's clock values.
So, if you run into heartbeat problems again, check your clocks.
In your 'xxxx-0.stdout.html' file you can verify, within reason, the clock settings, for instance:
    11:52:19.013 11:47:17.605 task_run_all(): 395 tasks
    11:57:39.004 11:57:39.000 Slow getMessage: hd2-0 1957 301404 REQUEST_SLAVE_STATISTICS
The first time value is the timestamp from the master at the time the message was received, the second is from the slave at the time that the message was sent, and as you can see, there is a five minute difference. The next message shows the now changed clock values.
The important message of this: make sure your clocks are synchronized in a multi-host environment.
    Henk.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List

Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.
If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the search box.

  • Out of Memory message -- even with a blank sequence!

Not sure what happened, but all of a sudden I can't get any timelines to open. Even if I just start up the program without any open sequences, when I click on the empty "Sequence 1" I get the dreaded Error: Out of Memory message. I've tried the usual fixes, but nothing seems to help. I recently ran Cache Out (to delete various caches) and Monolingual (to get rid of non-English language support files), I wonder if something essential got trashed?

Got 10GB or so on both my external hard drive (which I'm not even using now), as well as the internal one. My media is on the external, but to simplify I disengaged it and am just trying to load ANYTHING. Just working on my internal drive, which I have permission to use, of course. I've got 1.25GB of RAM, no issue there. Activity Monitor was a good idea, in fact it occurred to me a few minutes ago and I checked that, didn't see any obvious problems.
I trashed the preferences numerous times, deleted some old files, was going to dump the render files -- but I realized it's irrelevant, since it won't even open a blank file. Here's further evidence of the weirdness -- when the blank project opens up, it gives me the Browser window, and I can get the Viewer to open (but never the Timeline). However, if I try to open up anything in the Viewer, it immediately disappears! I'm losing my mind...

  • Connection Times Out Every Time!!!

Every time I try to publish my Muse site I get an error saying that the connection has timed out.  Why is it doing this?  I really need to publish the site!  Please advise.

Yes, but in fact the message is this:

  • Time Out for Time Machine

Just a suggestion (but someone has to say it), do not use Time Machine now. Wait until Apple releases an update.
TM has hard crashed my G5 (attempting to backup to a GW 500 drive with NOTHING else running) three times since my Leopard install. Enough.
This app is clearly not ready for general release. Great for all those who have kept up with the latest hardware but a poor choice for those of us who (for whatever reason) cannot donate a couple of large to Apple every couple of years.
So for now just wait, the TM issues will be addressed when our good buddies in Cupertino get around to it. Enjoy the rest of Leopard - the speed of Spotlight is fantastic!
BTW, every Apple OS upgrade has been a crap shoot - some may remember OS 6.9 - yikes!

To all who are having success, I salute you and wish you well.
However, after a tech support call to Apple, and two visits to the local Genius Bar AND five (5) more attempts to get Time Machine to work, I am done. My "perception" of the relative value of this software can only be based on my own experience. I understand that NO software is perfect for everyone but I will not credit Apple for being as through as it could be: too many hours over the years cleaning up after them.
I only wish I could bill Apple at my old tech support rates.
So good luck to all; I'll be using my old back up routines. For me, Time Machine was just a waste of time.
