Time-related Spinning Wheel
When I first begin to use LR 2.3, it seems to be working fine. But as the computer stays on, and as I continue to use LR, it soon (Several hours of use) gets to a point where the spinning color wheel takes over. I'll click on something (Anything - I have not noticed a correlaton) and instead of the action being performed, the wheel pops up, and that's it. It takes over the computer and does not go away. Last night I let it sit to see if it would stop. It didn't - it kept spinning overnight. Only way to get rid of it is to manually shut down the computer - can only do that via the power button.
This is Not depndent on v. 2.3. This also happened in v. 1, but it sems to be happening more frequently. Only other programs open when using this are Firefox, iMail and sometimes Photoshop CS2.
The one other thing that happens that I can correlate to v. 2.3 is the slowness to download files from memory card. I used to be able to start to DL a card & go & get a cup of coffee & in a few mins the card would be downloaded. Now, a 2 GB card, takes 15 - 20 mins to download.
Computer is an iMac Duo, Mac OS X 10.4.11, 2.16 GZ processor, 2GB Ram.
I am downloading my photos to an external 1 TB WD HD that still has about 700 GB capacity remainng. My Catalog is on my internal HD, and I have several catalogs, some small, some large, but it does not matter which catalog I am in, I still get this behavior.
Is this a Lightroom issue that can be easily resolved? Do I need to uninstall & reinstall (Not sure how)?
What is the solution?
Thank you
I do not know how to "Optimize and Relaunch Catalog", but, if that rrelates to a Catalog, I don't think it would be the answer as this does not appear to be catalog specific - it happens with any of my catalogs.
If I delete Preferences, will it default to new preferences, or will I have to go back in & set each preference again?
To do this I simple DELETE the file com.adobe.lightroom2.plist ?
I currently have 2 similar files - com.adobe.lightroom.plist, and com.adobe.lightroom.plist.saved.
Are these LR 1 files interferring with the prefernces when using LR2? Why is there a SAVED one for LR, but not for LR2? Again - could this be an issue here?
Thanks again

Mountain Lion - wrong time and spinning wheel
Since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, my clock is wrong and I get the spinning wheel of death on a regular basis when the cursor hovers over the clock, date or battery. Any idea how to solve this? Thanks
I got rid of Mountain Lion and back to Snow Leopard, all works fine!
Coz I don't give up too easy I have reinstalled mountain lion from scratch as seen on this forum and it is running sharp and fast but... the issue is still there: the spinnning wheel appears when the cursor is over the time and date (top right corner). If that wasn't enough the clock stops working at some point (I haven't actually established at which time does it happen but seems to be between 17:30 and 20:30).
All goes back to normal once computer is re-started.
I'm uploading a photo show what I mean, please not the difference in time between watch and Mac. Any suggestions?????
Thanks and Regards -
LOTS of spinning wheels in Mountain Lion--multiple applications, ALL the time

Having the exact same issue. Also, on right click, many apps freeze/beachball and must force close. Additionally, uTorrent and Transmission are not operating correctly-uTorrent constantly beachballing and unresponsive. Right-click freezes with everything from Word to iMovie. Takes way too much time to do anything, and lots of cursor freezing, here is a sys log excerpt:

That killed the hard drive, so I got a new hard drive and had the Apple Store install Lion on it, then used Migration Assistant to bring files over. Since then I've upgraded to Mountain Lion and have been experiencing lots of beach balls, freezes, etc. They're so bad that I've had to forcibly shut down 3 times, and each time can't restart. Each time I've erased and done a clean install of Mountain Lion from a USB, then used migration assistant and time machine to bring files back. How can I stop laptop freeze/spinning wheel every time I click or type etc?
I sporadically get momentary freeze and or spinning wheel when I try to do anything on the laptop. Sometimes it works fine but the majority of the time it stops on every click. The problem has been persistant for a week or two, possibly related to a mavericks update.
The dock sometimes doesn't work either - it is unresponsive, an appl will bounce but not open.
This occurs enough to be very frustrating and gets in the way of my work.

I backed up all my files, emptied the hard drive and uninstalled/reinstalled Mavericks.
This created another problem - the laptop would not boot up and I got a flashing question mark in a folder on the screen. Eventually I was able to reinstall Lion which then fixed that problem. For a short while there were no problems of latency either (maybe 20 minutes).
I have done disc scans/repairs and there were no problems there. I did an extensive hardware scan as well and no problems were detected.
I don't know much about Apple computers - I've only had this for just under two years and I have had no problems so I'm quite illiterate regarding how to repair it or scan for problems. Any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.
<Edited by Host>
Incidentally I have had no freezes since starting to write this post - Lion seems to be more stable than Mavericks was.Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. -
Why does the spinning wheel come up every time I open an application
Every time I open an application, I get the "spinning wheel" for an extended period of time. This is a VERY FAST computer and this slows me down terribly.
For instance: I just opened iTunes to sync my iPhone. When I opened the software I got the wheel, when I tried to select my iPhone, and yet again when I tried to hit the "sync" button. This is more than is typical, but it happens EVERY TIME I open EVERY application. You need to check the software you run.
Some officially supported and sold Mac versions of software use Wine for porting in some fashion or another. If some program you are running is spawning these Wine processes, its probably buggy and not shutting down correctly.
How to figure out which are Wine and which are not...?
Well if its a Cider ported game, you just see if there is a Cider logo on the game.
If its Wineskin ported, theres no super easy way to tell, depending on how much its been modified, but you can look inside the app (right click and "Show Package Contents") and go to Contents/MacOS and see if Wineskin executable is in there. Unless its a very old version of Wineskin it shouldn't be able to hang like that without major issues int he Windows software running in it, and I don't know any any company would release it if it was that buggy.
If its WineBottler Ported, you'll notice quickly because it launches X11 and runs the windows under X11... of course not all X11 apps are Wine, but if you have a program that launches and runs in X11.app then you can look inside it at Contents/MacOS to see if its Wine related.
It could also be Crossover, or a Crossover port of software... you'd have to dig around inside of its app too to see if it looked like one of those. -
IPhoto spinning wheel on startup, freezes then crashes every time
Howdy Community,
I've had an issue with iPhoto and everything I've tried so far has failed miraculously. A couple of months ago, back when my library had over 10k photos iPhoto was responding a bit slowly until one day when I started it up and the spinning wheel went on forever and ever until iPhoto froze and then crashed. What I've tried since:
1. Used the photo library first aid. Repaired the permissions first, then repaired the database and lastly rebuilt the database, none of which made any difference.
2. Repaired the disk permissions and Macintosh HD itself
3. Created new library and chose to use the new one, which worked until I created the first event or enabled iCloud, then went back to loading forever and then freezing.
4. Completely deleted (moved to an external hard drive) my old library and created yet another new one, with no luck.
5. Uninstalled iPhoto and downloaded again from the App Store- made no difference whatsoever
The library that is currently used is completely empty, still iPhoto won't open up.
When iPhoto starts up the following processes bottleneck the system until iPhoto does not respond and the crashes:
1. distnoted
2. iCloud photos
3. com.apple.dock.extra
I'm on a mid-2010 13-inch MacBook Pro with OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 and iPhoto 9.5.1
I have completely run out of ideas and I don't have a scooby what is causing it either, so any input is much appreciated! CheersHello Linc Davis and thank you for the detailed instructions.

Why is it that it would take a very long time [if ever] to change or adjust the tempo of a loop in the audio track when i set it to adjust regions to locators? Until now the spinning wheel of death is still very much spinning. thanks for any help.
Is there another way to adjust tempo of loops the faster way, any other technique? No clue why the final processes have suddenly started to take so long. Two things I'd try: a) capture from an older tape to see if some problem with the new tape is at fault. And b) check the health of your RAM and the hard drive.
The red frame sounds a bit like a glitch we used to have in OnLocation (actually in its predecessor HDV Rack) which was caused by a partial GOP. But that was a product of HDV Rack recording from the live video stream. It turned out that HDV cameras intentionally interrupt the data stream for an instant upon starting to record--specifically to avoid recording a partial GOP to tape. So my gut says that the tape has partial GOPs at the points where you stopped/started recording. -
I tried the Aperature trial and liked it, but did not purchase it when the trial ended. A few weeks later, i purchased snow lepord and purchased aperture via the app store. I have had not been able to use it since. Each time i open it , afer a few seconds i get the spinning wheel of death and Aperture is frozen. I have to force quit Aperture to shot down mycomputer. I have re-installed Aperture 3 times with th e same result. I have iphoto on my computer as well is this causing the problem? I want my money back!!! Can anyone help?
You need to delete the trial & then reinstall from the boxed DVD or the Mac App Store. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user.
Yvan Koenig has written an AppleScript that removes the files. You can find it on his box.com account in for_iWork'09 > other_iWork'09 items > uninstall iWork '09.zip. -
Date/Time Problem Results In Spinning Wheel
My mom's eMac recently was shutdown during a power outage, and came back with the date/time reset problem (I'm familiar with this when my battery comes loose on my iBook).
Only problem is, if I try to launch System Preference or Open Date & Time I get the spinning wheel that doesn't allow me to reset the date/time. On top of that, I can't seem to get anything to launch right now b/c it seems Finder is what's getting the spinning wheel. The only thing that launches is AIM (which is on autolaunch), but it can't be accessed at all from the computer (though it does show up as signed on when I'm signed on to AIM at work).
I've tried a force quit to relaunch finder with no results, and have also blasted the PRAM and tried the instructions for resetting the PMU (if I'm doing that right).
One thing I can across is the possibility I need to replace the internal backup battery. Could that be the problem, or have I run into soemthing much more serious.
Any help would be appreciated.Hello! A power outage often damages the disk's directory information. Boot from the install disc ("c" key down at startup with disc inserted) and right after the language screen navigate through the drop down menus to the disk utility and repair the disc. Run the repair multiple times if it reports errors until it doesn't report errors. Tom

Spinning wheel stays on for several minutes at a time, can't connect to app store
Hi I have an imac, about two years old. It has recently started freezing constantly, can't connect to the app store and the rainbow spinning wheel stays up for several minutes at a time regardless of what apps are open or what I'm trying to do. Safari will work for a minute or two then will say it can't connect, I then have to quit the app then open it back up to have it fail again shortly after. I've cleared out my cache, started it in safe mode, done the disk repair through disk utility, done virus scans and nothing has helped. It started doing it suddenly - fine one day then not the next - but I haven't put any new apps on or made any changes I can think of that might be the cause. Can anyone help?
One possibility is that your hard drive is failing. If you don't have backups of any data you don't want to lose, that needs to be your number one priority. Get that data backed up. Once you have done that, you can start exploring options.
Open Disk Utility, select your hard drive and take a look at the SMART status:
If it says anything other than Verified, the drive is definitely failing. If it says Verified, all that means is that it isn't failing in a way that the drive can detect. -
Coloured spinning wheel for several minutes at a time
Help! Whenever we try and do anything in iMovie we get coloured spinning wheel for many minutes at a time. It won't do anything without "thinking" for ages. We have imported quite a lot of footage. Have we filled up its little brain?
Which Mac do you have? How much memory is installed?

In Word I constantly get the spinning wheel of death, wait a few seconds and then go again. I have tried force quit several times, restarting the IMac etc. Waited one day, nothing seems to work. What to try next?

Spinning wheel when setting up new time machine
Hi,
Am sure there is something obvious i'm missing, but having set up a new time capsule (my first) I am having problems getting it to work with time machine. I have it working fine over airport and so I think it is working fine- I am getting a much better internet response than with my old base station. However when I try and set it up with time machine I get spinning wheel of death when I select it as a back up drive in the TM system preference pannel and it crashes system preferences completely.
Any ideas?

thanks, but my name was already one (short word). tried a TC restore but no avail. still find it really weird that it crashes my System Prefferences. shall try sticking a pin into it now!
It could be a corrupted preferences file. Try deleting:
/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
(in your top-level Library folder, not your home folder)
and Restarting. You'll have to re-enter any exclusions, etc. -
Mac Book Pro on boot up, the apple sign will appear with the spinning wheel. After a period of time the screen will turn grey, but the mouse will still operate, but not boot up.
If it was purchased brand new then it's running a version of Lion, so to reinstall Lion:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button. -
Safari gives me the spinning wheel every time I browse, have to force-quit
Hello,
I've been having a ton of issues with Safari these past few weeks. I'm using version 3.2.1 (4524.27.1) and I've reset, trashed preferences, nuked fonts, run OnyX, repaired permissions... and I'm still having the same problems.
Basically after I've browsed for about 5 minutes, Safari will hang on whatever page I'm trying to load, whether I'm loading up pages in multiple tabs or just a single page. Sometimes I can get the page to finish loading and continue browsing if I hit "stop" and "reload" a bunch of times, but mostly I get the spinning beach ball wheel, and then Safari shows up as "not responding" in my Force Quit Applications window. The program doesn't crash - it just gives me the spinning ball until I have to force-quit, relaunch, and start over - only to do it all again.
It's driving me bonkers - I even had the cable company come out and check my cable modem connection (I'm using RoadRunner), but it was running normally.
Below is my console log from this morning, when I started up and had to force-quit Safari again. Hopefully the issue is really obvious and I can get back to normal:

First off, thanks for all the suggestions. I've tried each one - unfortunately, Safari is still giving me the spinning wheel when I surf for more than a couple of minutes.
Taking QuicktimeKirk's advice, I did a discussions search for "DNS issue" and found several threads that recommended adding OpenDNS DNS Servers to the Network preferences pane (208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220). I also registered at the OpenDNS website and installed their "OpenDNS Updater" software.
After I did this, Safari seemed to actually go to the spinning wheel, freeze-up state quicker... although I might be a bit paranoid.
I forgot to mention that I already had "Warn when visiting a fraudulent website" checked off the in the preferences pane, and replacing Safari with Firefox as the default browser unfortunately didn't make much of a difference.
I'm copying below my most recent Console log. Perhaps there's something different I need to do with DNS...? Quicktime Kirk, if you suspect it's something to do with DNS, could you please be more specific with regards to what I should be looking for? I really appreciate it.
Thanks again for all the tips, everyone. I've got my fingers crossed that with your help, I'll be back to normal soon!
