Time to get a NEW Airport Express?

My wireless network has started disconnecting often. Even iStumbler doesnt seem to find it. And if it does, I STILL cannot select it as my WiFi network. My AE is at least 4-5 years old. Is it time to replace it with a new one?
My

It was secure, but I got tired of resetting it all the time! In any case, if the network dies, not much else can happen!  I'm at a point where I have weaned myself off my old iBook G4 to an MB. And with it, moved my work and Tunes stuff to the MB too. At the rate that its going, I'll have to move everything to the new MBP by this summer.

  • Cannot get my new airport express to connect to my network

I just got my new airport express and I am trying to set it up so I can listen to my itunes on my stereo. I first tried to get it to connect wirelessly and then after reading some posts on here I connected it to my router and was able to configure up to the point of it connecting to my network. It keeps telling me that I am tring to connect to a network that doesn't exist and Ive tried many a times with no luck.... Please help!!!

Temporarily connect the AXn, by Ethernet, to the Netgear router. Use the AirPort Utility to configure the AXn as I had suggested earlier. Once configured, relaunch the AirPort Utility and verify that the settings "stuck." Once verified, you can move the AXn to the desired location. (Note: When the AXn is configured to "Join a wireless network," it will not longer be performing as a wireless router. Instead, it will function as a wireless client. Streaming audio, will originate from the iTunes host to the Netgear, and then, wireless to the AXn.)

  • Trouble getting my new Airport Express to work.

So I purchased the AirPort Express (A1392) and I'm having a lot of trouble getting it to work properly.  My AirPort Utility recognizes it and it appears on the network to be Stable, however, it only works for streaming music wirelessly when the light is flashing amber (which I know means it's starting up).  As soon as the light turns green the sound cuts and I can no longer connect to it using my iPhone or Macbook Pro, but AirPort Utility still recognizes it.  I appreciate any help I can get!

Sorry, not exactly. A persistent, flashing amber light indicates that any of the several potential conditions may require your attention:
The base station has not yet been configured because it is new, or the reset switch has been set.
You have selected a security configuration that is not recommended.
One of several other conditions, such as a disconnected Ethernet cable or invalid IP address has been detected.

If you run the AirPort Utility, it will show an amber circle on the summary page next to the area(s) causing the problem. Click on this amber circle and it should provide an explanation. Please post back your results.

  • Cat get my new airport express to work...

i just bought an airport express in hopes of having a wireless connection for my macbook 4,1 OSX 10.5.6 and i cant seem to get past the blinking amber light... any ideas?
im using a dsl cable with a motorola box, at&t yahoo high speed internet.... im stuck, any help would be greatly appreciated!

When changing network configurations, it's always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your network components.
Please try the following to see if it will help ...
o Power-off the DSL modem, AirPort Express Base Station (AX) and MacBook; Order is not critical.
o Power-on the DSL modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes.
o Plug-in the AX; wait at least 5 minutes.
    o Power-on the MacBook.

  • Help?  I keep getting "Unexpected Error" everytime I try to use my new Airport Express to extend my network from my 500GB Time Capsule.

I am trying to extend my network from my 500GB Time Capsule using the new Airport Express I just bought, but no matter what I try I keep getting "Unexpected Error.  Try again".  The Express is still flashing Amber.  I cannot get it to turn green.  What am I doing wrong here?  Please help me.

Locate the AirPort Express in the same room as the Time Capsule for the setup.
Power off and restart the Time Capsule
Shut down and restart the Mac. Turn on the wireless on the Mac and temporarily disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac to the AirPort Express. In other words, you want to set up the AirPort Express using wireless, since that is the way that it will be used.
Hold in the reset button on the AirPort Express for 9-10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute for the Express to restart.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click directly on AirPort Express.
AirPort Setup will open up and take a minute to analyze the network, then announce that the Express will be configured to extend the Time Capsule network.
Enter a device name that you want to use and click Next
Wait a minute while AirPort Setup configures everything, and hopefully announces a message of Setup Complete. Click Done.
Now move the AirPort Express to a location that is about half way between the Time Capsule and the area that needs more wireless coverage. Avoid obstructions in the signal path between the Time Capsule and AirPort Express as much as possible.
Walls, ceilings, mirrors, heavy furniture, etc. just kill the wireless signal quality. Keep any cordless phones as far away from either router as possible.
It would be much better if you could plan to connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Express using an Ethernet cable, as best case.....you will be losing about half of the network speed trying to use wireless to extend.

  • New time capsule+new airport express=daily dropped connections

I have a new 2 TB Time Capsule and a new Airport Express that I puchased to update my old set-up of an Airport Express and Airport Extreme.
I have the TC set-up as the primary base station in the back of the house and the airport express set-up to extend the network in the front of the house. I was getting constant disconnects up front for the first several days so I finally exchanged the new AX for another one thinking maybe the first one was faulty. I reset the TC back to factory defaults for good measure and re-set up my network the same way with the new AX.
Two days with no disconnects, thought it was fixed, and then it started again...no joy. Not as often as with the first AX, but still it happens 2-3 times a day and always up in the front of the house while we're on our MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. When this happens both the AX and the TC have green lights and full bars of connectivity show in the menu bar, but yet no internet access. The only way to reconnect is to restart the AX. I have noticed too, that when this happens, the Airport Utility does not show the TC at all...even though it's light is fully green and it should be there, it just shows the AX until I restart and then both show up again.
I've tried changing the channel from automatic to a specific channel but this really doesn't change things much. Now I'm starting to wonder if something is awry with the TC. I've also noticed that it sometimes fails to back up because it can't find a connection to my iMac which is right next to it in the back of the house.
So far this upgrade has been more of a downgrade. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Just an update and still seeking some advice for this situation...anybody?
I tried re-setting both TC and AX to factory settings and re-configuring. Still get at least 3-4 dropped connections up front on a daily basis; however, TC has been connecting successfully and backing up my iMac, so at least that seems to be ok.
Still the same situation with the TC not showing up in Airport Utility every time the network connection drops happen...just the AX is seen until I finally have to restart the AX and then both can be viewed in Airport Utility and the internet connection is restored. Sometimes I can restore connection by simply toggling my airport access on and off in the menu bar of my MacBook Pro, but more often then not, I have to restart the AX itself to get back online.
Is it possible that this could be an issue with the TC? Somehow it might be dropping the connection to the AX? I can still exchange it for another if this may be the case. I'm already on my second AX thinking that the Express was the problem initially.
So far, nothing seems to help the situation. About the only thing that I haven't done is configure the AX to just join the network rather than extend it...but that would be defeating the purpose of why I bought it in the first place (to stream iTunes and extend network).
I never had issues with my old set-up, but then I had it configured as a WDS because I didn't have the option to "extend" the network as it was an older AX and Airport Express.

  • Brute force solution: new Airport Express and old (ca. '04) Airport Extreme

This is a long post, so I apologize in advance for that. However, I have been trying for the better part of three days to get my new Airport Express (802.11n) to connect to my ca. 2004 Airport Extreme Base Station (802.11b/g) (my old Express died after a little less than 4 years of service). I had searched all over this site and elsewhere on the Internet for ideas/suggestions/others' experiences/anything with no luck. (I am still not sure if the old Extreme is not fully compatible with the new Express or not.) I thought that perhaps my Express was a lemon. Basically what was happening was that I could not get the Express to be recognized, or, more accurately, Airport Utility would inform me that the network could not be extended. I tried changing the security on my Extreme, changing passwords, moving the Express and Extreme closer to each other and a bunch of other things. I must have reset the Express two dozen times. Finally, to see if the Express was faulty, I connected it to my DSL modem and used it as a Main Base Station. With that configuration, it worked fine.
Aha! I thought - Maybe I could use the Express as my main base station and my old Extreme as my remote station, so that is what I did. It took a bit of finagling with Airport Utility, but I did get the Extreme and Express to talk to each other and - miracle of miracles - green dots on both in Airport Utility! I also had to delete and re-add my Epson C62 printer to get the Extreme to recognize that. But now (fingers crossed) things are back to normal.
I must say that this has been the most frustrating experience I have ever had with an Apple product, primarily because there are probably hundreds of "blinking amber light on Airport Express" messages out there, but most of the answers (particularly the ones from Apple) are not particularly helpful. I hope that this post will help someone. Apple's suggestion to "follow the onscreen directions in Airport Utility" is very frustrating, because the information provided by Airport Utility is not very helpful at all (e.g., telling me that my network is not recognized when every other computer in my house - 5 in all - is finding it doesn't make sense).
Sorry, again, for the long post. I hope, however, that it proves to be helpful to someone (like me, who was searching for something like this for the past three days!).
    Happy New Year!
    Bob Q.
P.S. If I am missing something and someone has information to add, please do so!

If your old Extreme is an 802.11n model, then please check out this Apple Support article for details on how to configure them both for an extended network.

  • HT1515 My new Airport Express will not stop blinking an amber light.  What should I do?

I can't seem to get my new Airport Express set up properly.  I've connected wifi cable from the modem, the USB printer cable and plugged in but it continues to blink amber. I've tried all the solutions mapped out in the instructions.  What could be wrong?

Thank you so much for your reply.  I went over the AP utility and reread the notes and solved the issue!  Now, I need to solve a printing issue - I have two laptops, two Ipads and my Imac in my network and I would like them all to be able to print using my HP printer.  Working on that now!!!

  • HT1515 How do i get my old AirPort Express (7years old) to work with my new Time Capsule?

How do i get my old AirPort Express (7years old) to work with my new Time Capsule?

Does anyone at Apple have help for this sort of question - I too have an old printer (HP LaserJet 5MP) that I would like to keep using on my Mac. (Mac OSX 10.6.8).
I got it working by getting a USB cord that connects to it - but every once in a while it just stops working for weeks. The mac 'sees' it and it sends the data because the printer lights start blinking but then it just doesn't do anything. Is there no one who can tell me (and raterada) how to get some new life into these old printers. I would rather not add this (and a new toner cart) to the landfill just yet. . .

  • Will I be able to extend a dual band network from a Time Capsule 2nd generation with the new Airport Express on both bands?

My Time Capsule 2nd generation is the main accesspoint in my house. It resides on the second floor in our living room. On the first floor in our kitchen I have an fairly new Airport Express that extends my network on the 5 GHz band and allows me to stream music via Airplay. I had to choose 5 GHz since the 2,4 GHz band is interfered when using the microwave oven. However, we have a rather old house with loads of metal in the concrete walls and therefore the 2,4 GHz signal from the second floor proivded by the Time Capsule is hardly available on the first floor. Since all our iDevices (iPhones and iPods) operate at the 2,4 GHz band we sometimes don't have a proper wi-fi connection. I had tried before with another (older) Airport Express that only operated at the 2,4 Ghz band, but I could get a proper connection between the Time Capsule and the Airport Express. Therefore I think it would be the best solution if the new Airport Express would provide both bands simultaneously.
If I replace my existing Airport Express with the new one, will I be able to extend my network on both bands?

It sounds like you may have configured your Time Capsule to use a separate name for the 5 GHz network and then setup the Express to extend that specific band.
In order to extend both bands, the Time Capsule setup will need to be changed so that both bands are using the same name. In other words, you would uncheck the option for the 5 Ghz name.
Then, setup the new Express to extend the Time Capsule network.
This is the only way that they Express can extend both bands. It cannot extend both bands if you have assigned a separate name to the 5 GHz network since you will be forced to choose either the 5 GHz band or the 2.4 GHz band for the Express to extend.
How the microwave oven will affect this is not known. This will one of those things that you have to try in your home to know if it will work well, so it might be a good idea to understand the store's return policy before you buy....in case things do not work out as hoped.

  • New Time Capsule does not see Airport express

    Hi
We purchased A new Time Capsule but are not able to get the existing Airport Expresses to work with it. I tried looking for the AE with AIrport Utility and cant see them.
Any idea how to get these to work with our new Time Capsule 3 TB? My Airpot Utility is Version 6.2
    Thanks
    Jenny

I've reset one of them.  no luck
Suggest that you try the following if you have not already done so.
Power down the AirPort Express (AX) for a few moments
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in for 10-12 seconds while you plug the AX back in to power
Release the reset button and allow 40-45 seconds for the AX to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
Move the AX near your Time Capsule and computer
Temporarily, connect a spare Ethernet cable from your computer to the AX
Open AirPort Utility to configure the AX
If you do not have a spare Ethernet cable handy, the AX is broadcasting a wireless signal with a name like Apple Network xxxxxx. You must first connect to this network from your computer.
Then, open AirPort Utility. You may be asked to "switch" networks so that AirPort Utility can connect
If you use the recommended Ethernet cable method, you can disconnect the Ethernet cable once the AX has been Updated. Then, move the AX to the desired location.
Configure the second AX like you did the first.
If you have the older "b/g" version of the Express devices, unfortunately you will need to configure the Time Capsule and Express devices to Participate in a WDS network if you need to enable the Ethernet ports on the AX devices.
This will result in the Time Capsule being changed to a "g" wireless router, since WDS will only operate at "g" wireless speeds.

  • Playstation 3 can't get on wifi with new Airport Express

Hi guys. I got the new Airport Express that was released a few days ago. My Mac and other iDevices all connect fine but for whatever reason my PS3 has issues resolving an IP address or whatever. At first I thought I'd solved it by turning off the only DHCP Reservation I had on (for my iMac) but the next day it's not connecting again.
Unfortunately I'm not much of a networking whiz.
I have it set to DHCP (not Static or PPoE) And I'm not sure what else to share but I'd really like to solve this.
It connected once or twice in attempts so I know neither the Airport Express Base Station nor the Ps3 is broken.
    Just totally stumped here. :(

As an update, I noticed that the brief moments when my PS3 would attempt to connect, I would see another IP on my Airport Express Base Station. 10.0.1.3
So, wanting to try something out, I went into DHCP reservations on my AEBS and added a DHCP reservation for 10.0.1.3 and assigned my PS3's MAC address to it. I was able to connect instantly.
However, I've been connected briefly before, so only time will tell if it sticks. At this point I don't consider my situation resolved. Clearly my inability to connect has something to do with IP addresses and maybe the 'dynamic' one the PS3 sometimes gets assigned by the AEBS is something one of my other devices is already blocking or using?
I'm not a whiz at this stuff, so if anyone has any insights as to a good way to set up DHCP reservations so that everything works, I'm all ears.
Would it be wise to take the iMac, AppleTV, 2 iPads, and 2 iPhones and assign them ALL different DHCP reservations so that no one steps on anyone else's toes, so to speak?

  • Any tricks to swapping out my old time capsule with a new airport extreme I am also using airport expresses

Any tricks to swapping out my old time capsule with a new airport extreme I am also using airport expresses?  The hard drive on the TC quit working.

I do plan on using an external USB HDD for time machine backups.  I have both 802.11g and 802.11n used for playing music via stereos.
I would recommend against it. Apple does not support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks (USB HDD attached to the AirPort Extreme). Although folks have done so, we get a number of them here asking for help with their corrupted backups. If your backups are critical to you, please use another means (like connecting the USB HDD directly to your Mac) to do so.

  • How do I change the 5 ghz channel on new Airport Express when extended from Time Capsule?

Hi there. My Airplay device connected to the new Aiport Express keeps cutting out.
The 5ghz connection on my Time Capsule is set to channel 48. I have a new Airport Express (with Airplay device) extending from the Time Capsule and when I use WiFi Scanner, it shows the Airport Express set to channel 157. What gives? Is there a way to change to channel 48 or does this not matter? I imagine since they're on different channels, they're not talking to each other or am I .
Thanks in advance for any help.

I've managed to change the 5gHz of ther Airport Express that's extending the network.
As mentioned, main AE is on channel 48, and I now have the 2nd AE on channel 36 - which means my TV can now see the network. Also tested speed via my mavbook air on the same 5gHz network as it all seems OK (A while ago I spotted my Time Capsule was on the same channel 48 as main AE and throughput was abysmal! Bad enough to make me reset the TC to factory defaults and setup again - which is when the TC got channel 120).
Anyway, the fix... I changed the 2nd AE to create a wireless network (instead of extend), and manually set the channel to 36. I then set it back to extend, and it seems to have kept channel 36.

  • Can you add new AirPort Express Base Station Simultaneous dual-band 802.11n with a 1st Gen time capsule network

    Hi
Has anyone tried using the AirPort Express Base Station with a first generation Time Capsule and used it to extend their network, while still being able to use the Simultaneous dual-band 802.11n on their network?
    Thanks in advance

The first generation Time Capsule was not a simultaneous dual band device.
If you add the "new" AirPort Express to the network and configure it to "Extend a wireless network", it will extend the one single band signal that it is receiving from the Time Capsule.
In other words, the AirPort Express will not extend simultaneous dual bands in this type of setup...since it can only "extend" what it receives. You would need a simultaneous dual band Time Capsule if you want that type of functionality.
