Time to get charts correct.
3D bar charts are all very pretty but sometimes people want to represent quantitative data in an genuinely informative way. To this end it is time to provide some simple changes to the way Pages does its graphing in order to provide this resource. (Yeah I know how to use a dozen other tools to do this but it would be nice if Pages (and by extention: Keynote since it is the same underlying software) did this natively.
Almost all these suggestions pertain to scatter plots:
1. For scatter plots provide properly scaled axes. This is a simple algorithm guys! Set the scale so that the number along the axes come out close to whole or 1/2 whole numbers.
2. By default, scatter plots, should show the full x AND y grid. Provide a way to show a grid for minor grid points as an option.
3. Pick up the titles at the top of the data columns as axis labels.
4. Provide for a graph title (sure I can work around this with a text box but shouldn't it be built in to every graph?
5. (low priority) Allow for the inclusion of a simple "trend-line" (as our friends in Redmond call it.) A simple least squares fit and titling of the line on the same graph.
I like pages. I build complicated documents as handouts for my students. Pages gets all the text flows correct where MS Word just chokes. This graphing stuff isn't hard to fix and should have been right in the first release.

* Create an allow cookie exception (Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: Exceptions) to keep such a cookie, especially for secure websites and if cookies expire when Firefox is closed.

Configuring the time capsule airport wlan function as "connect to wlan", the time capsule gets a correct IP adress from the other wlans IP range, but does not assign this to the ethernet ports. With Airport express it worked, the single Ethernet port got the IP Parameters passed through!
My setup is a Vodafon Esaybox connected to ISP. Time Capsule is not able to extend the wlan of the easybox, neither airport express can do.
Only the option "connect to wlan" is succesful.
With airport express I was able to connect my Sony Bravia TV to the lan via ethernet to stream pictures, the TV set got an IP adress from the easybox.
With the time capsule the easybox dosn't find devices connected to the ethernet ports to submit IP adresses. The TV set get another IP adress (169.xxx.x.x.) in subnet mask 255.255.0.0 and I don not now where from.
My notebook is a MacBook pro.

If the AirPort Extreme and Time Capsule are configured to "extend a wireless network" they will provide additional wireless coverage....and...the Ethernet ports are enabled in this type of setup.
The "catch" here is that you must have an Apple router providing the network to be extended. -
Getting charts to display correctly
I am trying to chart data at group levels for formula-derived values. For example, I have a chart that is designed to show the five year vacancy rate history for a group of office buildings. The annual vacancy rates are calculated by summing the vacant square footage and the total square footage in the set of buildings, and dividing the former by the latter.
There are two problems with my results. First, mysteriously, the resulting chart in the design view is different than the resulting chart in the preview. Second, the preview chart has correct results, i.e., the bar heights match the annual vacancy rates, but the results are repeated four times in the chart.
Any help with this would be appreciated.Thank you for your response. I did indeed find a mismatch between the level at which I was placing my chart and the summary level of my formulas. I am working through that and I believe that will solve that part of my problem.
The issue with the charts in design view not matching those in Preview is evidently inherent in the software. I guess I just have to get over that and not use the design view for formatting my charts. -
I've tried downloading iOS5 several times and after an hour each time I get a message that says my network connection has timed out. But I can't find any information about "timing out" or how to correct the situation. Any help?

I have had to restore my pc to a place back in time when it worked correctly. This meant that iTunes was deleted. I have now downloaded the latest version of iTunes but I cant sync my iPad with it. I get the message that this iPad is synced with another iTunes Library and cant sync to this one. Thankfully all my music library is on iPad. I would be grateful for some help on this issue

When I press the iTunes button on my ipod touch I get the message 'cannot connect to iTunes store' . My wifi is working fine, I can connect to safari & you tube, no parental setting in place, and time and date are correct. Can anyone help please? I have restored my ipod to factory settings and rest it.
I also tried moving the date forward by a year and then moving it back to normal and it still doesn't work. i can't find an automatic update of time zones on my itouch to turn this off.

Excel Charts do not get displayed correctly (colour) !urgent!

believe me: I spent days in research to fix my problem but could not find a solution yet...
I use a lot of Excel Web Parts on my SharePoint Site. Basically to display charts or tables. Everything worked fine for months but out of a sudden some of the web parts do not anymore. These Web Parts still get displayed but all in black or grey and
because of that are partly unreadable. For example: a cell with a white font and a blue blackground just gets displayed as a black cell with black fontcolour. I thought it might depends on the settings of the server computer but other colourful charts/tables
still work fine (but on the other hand, all new web parts do not get displayed correctly...)
I tried to remove macros, conditional formatting, creating completely new subsites with content. But the result is always the same: black cells.
Then I tried to just use 8bit-colours and tada: it worked (except of the colour white, that still does not work).. I do not have access to the server computer. And I am wondering because some other charts still work..
Any ideas?
I do not use SharePoint Designer, just the browser version of 2010.

After updating my iphone 4 to iOS6 the screen will periodically fade out to black and will not come back up. I have to shut the phone off and back on 2 or 3 times to get it to come back on. I have done a restore and that did not help. any ideas? is this happening to anyone else?
did you restore from backup or as a new device? Restore as a new device. Before you add any apps to it, use the phone with just the iOS-installed apps. If it's fine, slowly add a few purchased apps back at a time. Do this until the offending app is found.

Granted, I have two Apple I.D's that I'm using, however I've been more than diligent when it comes to getting the correct password written down for each of the I.D,'s, and yet the system simply doesn't recognize them. When I log into this program on my desktop there's no issue at all, but on my iPhone 4S it's a different story.
Unable to send a camera roll photo via e-mail, yet it's no problem doing it as a text message. Anyone have some advice as to how I can rectify this?Are you saying you can't sign into your iCloud account?

10.4.8 Client takes long time to get to login window when bound to OD.
I am working on a system in a school. We have a dual processor g5 xserve with 4 gb of ram, the raid card, and 3 500 gb drives.
Fresh install of 10.4.8 with all the updates.
Raid 5 split in 2 volumes, one for server and one for data.
AFP service running.
Local dns running.
Promoted to open directory master.
This is the following test scenario i have.
there is a user called studenttest and he belongs to a group called cccarstarmembers and is in a workgroup called student.
the studenttest users home folder exists in a sharepoint called students that is set up on the data partition.
there is a sharepoint called cccarstar that holds data for some educational software we use. The owner is administrator with rw access, the group is cccarstarmembers with rw access and others have no access.
The student workgroup only has a few changes like dock location just for testing purposes to verify that the work group is working properly.
When i bind a newly built 10.4.8 client with all the updates to the od server it intermittantly takes a long time for the client to get to the login window when it is powered up. Sometimes it will get to the login window in 45 seconds and other times it will take 5 minutes. This is not consistant. if you unbind the client then the computer will behave properly consistantly.
I have tried binding the client to the od master using the fully qualified domain name and the ip address with the same results.
the search path on the server is "dc=osx1,dc=erm,dc=sd,dc=bc,dc=ca" and on the client it auto populates at cn=config,dc=osx1,dc=erm,dc=sd,dc=bc,dc=ca".
I have changed the search path on the client to match the search path on the server with no success as this is what used to work for us on panther setups.
But this school has a panther client i am working on at the same time with the same applications installed and system preference settings and when i bind it to the same od master with the same search path that is displayed on the server it works fine. all users work, all groups and work groups work.
Dns appears to be working. lookup provides the correct forward and reverse lookup info on the server, if i use either the panther or tiger client and use lookup with the servers fully qualified domain name and ip address i get the correct answers back.
I had this problem before where tiger gave me slow to login screen problems but panther wouldnt when bound, and apple told me that it was because i had afp guest access disabled on the server. Enabling it resolved the issue about 6 months ago at another site but this time when building the server i made sure it was on from the start even thoug it is off by default.
Any suggestions, i am pulling my hair out and about 8 working hours from a deadline.I've seen this a lot.

Another one of the causes is when you have multiple network mounts and your AFP service has guest access disabled. The loginwindow is trying to authenticate to each share with the username given and it is failing when that user account is not authorised for that share.
Another can be the LDAP timeout value(s). Try adjusting these in the LDAPv3 plug-in.
Also make sure your network ports have portfast/faststart set on the Mac ports. Sometimes because of STP the port isn't initialised fast enough for the OS when it's ready to start LDAP'ing.

Getting the correct userid in a afterproperties in a item event receiver

am writing a custom item event receiver and i am trying to read from a user/group column. and when i am using afterproperties to get the getitembyid() for a user, am getting different values on different times.
yesterday when i accessed the same, i am getting the correct user id i mean if its "in\john.mith " am getting the values john.smith.
but today when i debugged, i am not getting the john.smith value instead it pulled the fully qualified value - i eman - along with authentication - i:#w0/.....kind of.
its strange that sometiems its working fine and sometimes the same code behaves in a different way.
can ansyone please provide any hint what exactly going on and how can i get a correct id when i use afterproperties.

According to your description, the value of the User field in the AfterProperties not always the same.
As you said, the value got changed today when you debug your event receiver, is there any change in your environment recently?
A possible reason might be that the authentication method has been changed.

Thus, a possible workaround to get the user name from a User field is that you can use

I have owned my MacBook Pro for several months without having any problems with it. Recently I am having trouble with my Yahoo Mail. I can open it fine, but 2 out of 3 times when I try to actually open a message, the spinning ball comes on the screen and does not stop. Sometimes, I can log out or force quit and come back in to my account and use it. Other times, I run into the same problem. Any suggestions?

No, your Yahoo account is not in iCloud (which only handles iCloud mail), it is in Yahoo, and the Yahoo mail account is on your iPad.

Get the correct settings for your account from Yahoo and set it up manually.
By the way, I also find the "password" issue problematical. It seems Apple want my Apple password rather than my eMail password. All very confusing.

Hello, I have a 13" MacBook and I'd like to hook it up to my 42" LCD TV to play games and watch and edit movies and pictures. It's a 42" Vizio VU42L (manual located at Vizio's Site). I have HDMI inputs and RGB PC (VGA) inputs on the back of the TV and would like to get what's the best quality that will work in my situation. I would normally just order cables but I've seen a lot of posts with people in my same situation getting cables they didn't need. I'd rather just buy the right thing the first time. I think what I need is the mini-dvi to VGA cable but I don't know if it'll convert the digital signal to an analog signal. Or is there a way to get an HDMI converter for it?
Will either look decent on that large of a screen?
Will this work, or should I get Apple's version? Best Buy Cable Apple Cable at Best Buy</a. (Neither are available at my local bestbuy so i'd rather get what's best since I have to order online anyway)

The HDMI would be better digital quality, the VGA is analog. The adapter you linked to would give you the analog output from the Mac, which you could then use with a standard VGA monitor cable into the TV. It is an Apple brand adapter, but you might prefer to use the mini-DVI to DVI adapter for the digital video output from the MacBook with a DVI-HDMI cable.
Although you may have to experiment with the settings of the TV, and the System Preferences:Displays:Color: Calibration... settings on the MacBook to get the best color output. Sometimes you may get different results with the VGA compared to DVI for a particular TV.
VGA is usually a single plug of 15 pins, RGB are individual RCA plugs for red-green-blue component video inputs, you might have these terms mixed up. Note that some DVI sources, like on a third party video card might contain both digital and analog signals so that you could just use a DVI-to-VGA adapter to pass through the analog signal. The Apple mini-DVI to DVI is only digital, so you can't chain that with a DVI-to-VGA adapter. -
A library on my hard drive became corrupted, so I over-wrote it from an external hard drive. When I now access the library on my hard drive, many of the images are vertical, and cannot be rotated other than one at a time. Ideas to correct this?
You had already done "Repair" and "Rebuild"? These usually takes scores of minutes or hours.
Does the Library on your external drive work from the external drive? Navigate to it in Finder and double-click the name.
If it does, delete the problem Library, empty the System Trash, reboot, Verify your system disk using Disk Utility (and might as well repair permissions while you're at it), reboot, test the external drive Library once more to confirm it works properly, then close it and copy the Library to your system drive. When the copying is done, double-click the Library (now on the system drive) and see what you get.
