Time to Restart

Does the number of mounted volumes (hard drives and partitions) have any impact on the time it takes for the Mac Pro to go from the Restart command to black screen and chime (all apps already closed, btw)? Seems like it has gotten much longer with the addition of more partitions, and I thought it might relate to housekeeping done in readiness to restart?
Ernie

Stephan,
Happy to award the Helpful and Solved points, even though I personally do not really like the point system
I had four drives when I first got the Mac Pro, but they were not the four I wanted for the long term. One was the boot drive drive from my old G5, which died so suddenly the only way to get at the data on that drive and the other one in the G5 was to insert them into the Mac Pro. That all worked nicely.
I have since installed two 1 TB WD GP drives and partitioned them to best fit to my needs. One Maxtor 500 GB died less than 90 days after purchase, so I had to replace it. I will shortly be reformatting the drives that came from the G5, but presently neither is in the Mac Pro, having copied all the data from them recently.
I set up one small partition as a streamlined boot drive to be used only to run SuperDuper, Disk Warrior, and any other maintenance software. Best advice I can find suggests using a separate boot drive for SuperDuper when cloning any production boot drive (sounds fancy to say production, but I am only a hobbyist.)
Thus I have some need to take hard drives in and out, in addition to making use of externals that I used with the G5.
All the best,
Ernie

  • Recently upgrade to Yosemite and now Apple symbol and install bar displays each time I restart

    Hi guys,
Hoping someone can help. Recently upgraded to Yosemite and the other day I noticed that when restarting the Apple symbol displayed along with the install bar (just like happens when you upgrade your iPhone). This went on for about 30 seconds before the login screen displayed. This now happens every time I restart. I haven't downloaded and tried to install any files so I am not sure why this keeps happening.
I am worried it might be malware or similar that is trying to work into the operating system. I have disconnected WiFi and timed the restart to check the logs (although I have no idea what I am looking for). The Apple System Log (ASL) Message log seamed to have a number of fail messages and 'installation' lines so hopefully this will make sense to someone. Below is the log for that 30 seconds of the install.

    Hi Blotontheland,
Thanks for the prompt reply. The interesting thing is that my Macbook Pro was upgraded today to Yosemite and I still have the spinning wheel on the start up screen before the login page comes up.

  • Firefox 16.0.2 crashes on my macbookpro that runs on 10.6.8; It causes such a freeze that it takes several times to restart my computer.

Over a week ago, my computer kept crashing. I thought at first it was Firefox, and I followed some instructions on the website to accommodate my operating system and computer model. My screen only kept freezing, and it took longer to turn on my computer. It would take about 7 times of restarting before I would fully attain a rebooted system. Then soon enough, it would freeze again. I brought it into a mac dealer who fixed the unit through disc warrior thinking it was solved, and it was not. Then they told me that my hard drive was damaged and I had to replace it. When I returned to pick up my model, it froze at the desk. They then said the ram was damaged and they fixed it for free. Tonight, at my second time on Firefox, it just went crazy on the screen and then froze. It took seven tries to turn on my machine. I can only think that the Firefox that I have is infected, and it has to be replaced, or else that the operating system that Firefox is currently distributing isn't compatible with my computer and operating system.

Another thing that is probably relevant now that I think of it:
I forgot that the xcode_3.2.6_and_ios_sdk_4.3.dmg file would not open on it's own. It would get all the way through the verification process and then display "invalid checksum". I had selected Skip to bypass the verification process in the hopes that it would install anyways. Just ejected it and tried to verify it again, same "invalid checksum" error.
I've looked for solutions online and everybody just says to keep downloading it/have a wired connection and to use Safari... I've downloaded the thing 5 times now meeting both of those requirements and the exact same issue occurs every time.

    Hi,
It seems to be a system crash issue, we need to analyze the crash dump file to narrow down the root cause of the issue. Unfortunately, it is not effective for us to debug the crash dump file here in the forum. I would like to suggest that you contact Microsoft
Customer Service and Support (CSS) via telephone so that a dedicated Support Professional can assist with your request.

My laptop opened with a grey flashing file folder with a question mark inside it .  How do  I open my laptop!  I have tried force closing several times and restArting  nope !  nada!  Suggestions?

That folder with the question mark icon means that the MacBook can't find the boot directory. That can either mean it can't find the hard drive or the Operating System data on the hard drive is somehow corrupted.
With 10.4, 10.5 or 10.6 put your install DVD into the optical drive (CD/DVD drive) and reboot. Be sure to either use the disc that came with your Mac, or, if you installed a later Mac OS X version from disc, use the newer disc. As soon as you hear the boot chime, hold down the "c" key on your keyboard (or the Option Key until the Install Disk shows up) until the apple shows up. That will force your MacBook to boot from the install DVD in the optical drive.
Or if you are running 10.7 Lion, 10.8 Mountain Lion or 10.9 Mavericks, boot from the recovery partition (Command +R on boot) and use Disk Utility to repair your OS 10.7, 10.8 or 10.9 partition.
When it does start up, you'll see a panel asking you to choose your language. Choose your language and press the Return key on your keyboard once. It will then present you with an Installation window. Completely ignore this window and click on Utilities in the top menu and scroll down to Disk Utility and click it. When it comes up is your Hard Drive in the list on the left?
If it is, then click on the Mac OS partition of your hard drive in the left hand list. Then select the First Aid Tab and run Repair Disk. The Repair Disk button won't be available until you've clicked on the Mac OS partition on your hard drive. If that repairs any problems run it again until the green OK appears and then run Repair Permissions. After repairing use Startup Disk from the same menu to choose your hard drive for restarting from your hard drive.
If your hard drive isn’t recognized in Disk Utility then your hard drive is probably dead.

what is cookies.sqlite and why does it slow the start up of mozilla by a minute or so. I found it and deleted it,fixed the problem, but it reappears every time I restart mozilla.

AVG reports these sqlite cookies each time firefox starts. they usually belong to tribalfusion or some other tracker. How do I block them in the first place. I thought firefox is a safe browser. Did not have this problem until I upgraded to 3.6.

I have removed and re-installed iTunes. The music files are still intact but the library gets erased every time I restart the PC.
This means I have re-scan all my music files over and over again.
Also, an inspection of the iTunes directory reveals lots and lots of temp (iT*.tmp) files, all of them are about the same size as the iTunes library database (10mb in my case) so it looks like iTunes is not closing down correctly / writing the temp file back to the iTunes library (iTunes Library.itl)file.
    Can anybody help?

  • Cover Flow cache is gone every time I restart iTunes.

The title pretty much says it all. Ever since I began running iTunes on my new MacBook Pro (Spring 2009, 3.06 Ghz with 4GB of RAM) I was pretty disappointed with how slowly Cover Flow worked. I had been using iTunes on a PC for a while, but I figured that on brand new top-of-the-line Apple hardware, iTunes and Cover Flow would fly.
The problem is, every time I restart iTunes, it appears that any Cover Flow image cache is gone. It seems like it has to re-lookup and re-load every image in my library as I scroll. It is usually smart enough to predict where a long scroll if going to end and pre-load the images at my destination, but every cover that I "flow" over during the scroll appears as just the default musical note symbol. Plus, moving around is choppy as it loads every image. I have to manually scroll through the whole library in order to force it to load every single cover and therefore respond smoothly as I scroll through. This keeps working until I restart the app, and then I'm back to square one.
    Why is this happening?

Thank you to all that gave advice, none of the suggestions worked I'm afraid........ but I did find a solution to the problem, by accident......... Doing a normal sync still does not work...... So what I have done is, limited each file to just 1000 photos, and have ended up with 32 files now........... I have ticked the boxes     "Sync photo's from, selected files" and I sync with the first file ticked, then sync again with the second ticked, and so on, I know its long winded but they are now all on my ipod

  • SIM has to be activated every time iPhone restarted

I was given a replacement o2 SIM and had my account transfered. When I inserted it in my iPhone 3Gs I had to activate with iTunes to make it work which it does OK.
However now every time I restart the phone I get the plug picture and a message saying a new SIM has been detected - connect to iTunes. Each time I connect it then works OK.
How can I make the phone activate the replacement SIM permanently? When my broadband went down last week the entire phone was made useless after I had switched it off.

The phone required a hardware restore to enable it to switch on without iTunes. It is now OK.

  • Changes made on firefox arent registered and need to change again every time firefox restarts.

Since I installed firefox on my new PC nothing seems to register. Every time I start it, it wants to give me a tour like the first time I installed it. Fond size on same pages change every time I open them. Change of the home page doesn't register, meaning after I change it on the options it will not remember it next time I restart the program.
On top of that, even though its shows that I am signed it for syncing, it actually does not sync anything from my older PC.

It could be the work of one of your add-ons, or even add / mal-ware.
Look thru your add-ons list and make sure you know what each one is
    and what it does.
Some added toolbar and anti-virus add-ons are known to cause Firefox issues.
Open the '''Add-ons Manager <Control><Shift> A''' and '''disable All of them.'''
Also, check the programs that are on your computer
'''Windows:''' Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs.
    '''Mac:''' Open the "Applications" folder.
    '''Linux:''' Check your user manual.
Go thru the list. If you find something that you don't
know what it is, use a web search.

I have the following finding from the Event Viewer.
    Event 7022
The Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service service hung on starting.
    Event 7024
The Forefront Identity Manager Synchronization Service service terminated with service-specific error %%-2146234334.
    Event 7031
The SharePoint 2010 Timer service terminated unexpectedly.  It has done this 4007 time(s).  The following corrective action will be taken in 30000 milliseconds: Restart the service.
    Event 11016
The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
    {000C101C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
     and APPID
    {000C101C-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE SID (S-1-5-20) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.
    I found this
post talking about the solution of this problem. Can anyone help to explain the solution to me?
Also, I try to stop the user profile service and user profile sync service and restart both. The timer service restart problem has gone!! However, new error in the event viewer.
