Time to upgrade my machine...HELP!

Alright, so it's time to build up my new mac empire...move up from the very tired Dual G4 I've been using to the next (or at least current) generation.
Basically, I need to go "balls out" on this machine--I'll have about 10k to spend.
I'd like to hear people's suggestions for configurations specific to HDV/HD and graphics processing/editing.
I can tell you now that I'll order the machine with minimal RAM and fill it with aftermarket RAM instantly. Possibly the same with storage.
This includes:
machine-
options-
displays-
hardware-
capture (and other) cards-
accessories-
software-
graphics card (why?)-
storage devices-
best aftermarket RAM-
Firewire (or other) cards-
anything I left out!
Please include non-Apple options as well. I'll basically be setting up the beginnings of my dream editing station here, so think expansion too!
Thanks, and I'll post pics when it's all set up!!
(you can post pics of yours, now, too if you want!)
cheers,
chris
Dual G4 PowerMac 1.42 MDD-build 7W98   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   2 GB RAM, 2 TB storage, FCP Production Suite 4.5

Thanks David...and I will be talking to a VAR...
I also wanted to kind of see what people are using now for what type of workflows, formats, etc. What people like, what potential problems to look out for etc.
As far as MY situation goes...I need a ton of storage, I would like to eventually network the G4 system I have now together as a second workstation for an asst. editor, and my display needs are probably going to be met with dual Apple 20" flat panels, or by a (dual) aftermarket display solution.
As for a capture card, I also will need to have an NTSC Pro Video Monitor (HD if I can afford it) and a capturing solution for varying formats (DSR-45 and/or another deck) I'd like to be able to expand easily to a basic audio production machine at some point in the future as well.
Finally, can one even GET a regular G5 anymore? I'm a bit paranoid about the 1st generation of Intels. Should I be??
thanks!

Just installed a HP Color Laserjet CM2320nf MFP printer, at the same time I upgraded to Lion. It prints fine, but I cannot use the scan functions.  I downloaded the most recent driver! Any help would be appreciated.

HP says that the drivers for your all in one print/scanner are downloadable from apple. For the scanner to use preview. image capture or the scan icon from the print driver queue.  I don't know how old your HP is, but I know that the newer Os from apple don't support a lot of older printers. You might be able find a third party driver that could work.

  • Upgrading 2 machines to SL - 1 of them has an external HD with Time Machine

    hello all.
my setup and configuration are as follows:
machine 1 (home computer): Mac mini with external HD (not partitioned) used by Time Machine for automatic backups. No Boot Camp partition. WinXP on Parallels 5 beta for occasional use.
machine 2 (work computer): Macbook white with no external HD. WinXP on Boot Camp partition for occasional use. Another WinXP installation on Parallels 4 for full-time work use.
i plan on upgrading (not Erasing and Install but just upgrading) both machines to Snow Leopard, but have a doubt about machine2. since it is not attached to an external backup drive, and since it has very important work documents, how should i do to back it up before upgrading to SL?

No, Winclone's is a compressed disc image and doesn't take up too much room. You can fit it on your hard drive (it is a Mac application.) So only one clone is required. You may even be able to create a large enough partition on an existing external drive if it's large enough without having to lose anything by partitioning on the fly via Disk Utility:
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed. +(Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)+
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.

  • How Does Time Machine Help If... iCal Data Lost?

    Hi,
How does Time Machine help if, say, your iCal database gets messed up? Or, how does it help if you accidentally delete all your playlists from iTunes? I'd be interested to know.

That's a very good question (although probably better directed at Apple than us). Because Time Machine is new and Apple's in house programs handle data in different ways, there are a range of different means of recovering data for different applications. Not very user friendly and iCal is one of the least user friendly ones.
As an experiment, because I don't make much use of iCal and have no real idea how it works, I tried to find out how to restore its data. Starting with working with the application: nope, not TM aware at present. OK, where does it restore its data? Next step Spotlight where, as it happens, the obvious search "Calendars" brings up a folder in ~/Library labelled that with a whole lot of mysterious stuff in it. I'm pretty sure that restoring that folder would do the trick. No doubt, if you could figure out which Calendar belongs to what in the above folder you could restore a single calendar that was causing problems. Still, Apple's clearly got some work to do to make this more transparent. Roll on iCal4!
(By the way Mail also restores from within the program).

  • Time to upgrade, but concerned...

Hi...I currently have an iBook G4, and while I love this little white book, it is deffently time to upgrade. I have droped this puppy more then once and now it is a permenent desktop due to hinge damage.
Anyways, im thinking of buying a new macbook, but a couple things concern me.
    1. Ive heard the new macbooks overheat like a vintage PSX during ff7. haha.....you know what i mean...(if you don't, look up some PSX game system history...lol). Anyways, my ibooks fan never turns on. during the 2+ years that ive owned it, its maybe turned on 5 times, and that was usually during WOW. It also scared the crap outta me, because it would just turn on and id hear this wizzing noise.
    2. Sence apple is still somewhat experimenting with the intell chips, im still concerned on how they are working out. Any personal thoughts, experiances...ect.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.
    Thanks. Derek =]

    1. Ive heard the new macbooks overheat like a
    vintage PSX during ff7.
I got mine 5 months ago and when I first got it, it did run hot. But after the firmware update, it's been beautiful. I mean it never seems to get hot. Not even toasty-warm.
And I rarely noticed the fans running, though, of course, sometimes they do.
    2. Sence apple is still somewhat experimenting with the intell chips, im
still concerned on how they are working out.
Again, there were some hiccups at the very beginning, but at this point the experimentation is waaay over. Every new Mac is using them and they're working out brilliantly. Lightening speed and great performance.
Upgrade, guy. You will be amazed not just by the speed and performance of this machine, but by its stunningly beautiful screen, the incredibly responsive keyboard and being able to use the built-in camera. It's really a fantastic machine.

  • Time to upgrade processor?

Upgraded HD to 250 GB, added DVD read write now I need to upgrade processor. Help. Have had G4 since late 2001. Absolutly no problems. Have kept software updated also. Would like to upgrade to new OS Leopard but processor speed only 800mhz, need more. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Budget allows about $400 dollars. Also with a processor upgrade can I increase ram? Right now Im maxed at 1.5g
    Thanks Joey

    Hi-
    Welcome to Discussions!
For $400 you can bump the speed of your processor a lot, and give yourself a "new" machine:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?model=153&type=Processor&TI=1526&sh oupgrds=Show+Upgrades
The dual 1.6ghz processor upgrades would really bring your machine to life.
If you like games, and other graphic intensive applications, a 7455 based processor upgrade might serve you even better. They max out at about 1.4ghz, but have an L3 cache that really helps the processors work "faster":
    http://store.fastmac.com/productinfo.php?productsid=198
    http://www.gigadesigns.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=37
Even without moving to Leopard, the speed increase will improve your experience with Tiger, and all the applications that you have.
I, like Tom, am running a processor upgraded G4, and went ahead and ordered Leopard. Power of positive thinking.....
Will be posting results as soon as I receive my copy!

  • Time to upgrade my 1st Generation Airport Extreme?

As the title says, thinking it's time to upgrade my 1st Generation Airport Extreme (Draft 'n') to the latest 5th generation model, just to be clear my existing Extreme is the current form factor white square design and not the very earlier dome version (although I did have one of those too once upon a time).
Here's my thinking/question, current Extreme has been a great trusty workhorse since new, reliable and generally rock solid performance, however a recent upgrade to a super fast 'Fibre To The Home' internet connection is making me think it's time for an upgrade to solve low speed/throughput issues with the current Extreme setup.
With my current iMac networked to the wall mounted Fibre (1000 Mbps ethernet) router via Cat 5e I'm getting amazing speeds on speedtest.net (i.e 760 Mbps down and 228 Mbps up), however when wirelessly connected to the Extreme with my iPhone 4S and MacBook (Black) I get the following speedtest.net results:
iPhone 4S: 17 Mbps down and 34 Mbps up
Macbook: 24 Mbps down and 63 Mbps up
(Interesting that the uploads seem to have better connection/throughput than the downloads, normally the opposite applies?)
I understand that the current Extreme is somewhat crippled as it features 100 Mbps Ethernet ports (latest models have 1000 Mbps), however the wireless speeds still seem way below what I would expect (i.e. nearer 100 Mbps), both the 4S and Macbook are within feet of the Extreme.
The Extreme is set to 'n' only 2.4 Ghz, bridge mode (letting the wall mounted Fibre router do all the routing/DHCP work) via Ethernet Cat5 from one of the 4 Ethernet ports on the wall mounted Fibre router to the Extreme WAN port, tried various channels, 1, 6 and 11. Current Firmware 7.6.1 on the extreme. I have also disabled the wireless connection/network on the Fibre router to avoid any possible interference with the Airport network.
So my main question is, should I look to upgrade to the latest Extreme model, will this improve the wireless speeds, based on my setup what wireless speeds could/should I expect with a new Extreme, or am I missing/overlooking something within the current setup?
    Thanks in advance.

    Thanks John, this certainly helped.
    Speedtest.net results:
2.5 Ghz n: 19 Mbps down and 53 Mbps up
5.0 Ghz n: 28 Mbps down and 58 Mbps up
It also came to light that I wasn't using the best of the speedtest.net servers to do my testing, by accident I selected a different one (Newbury UK - Vodafone) to the one I had been using (Milton Keynes UK) and the Newbury server indicated download speeds of around 50 Mbps, which I feel much happier with.
Seriously considering a new Extreme for the simultaneous 'n' networks, 1000 Mbps ports and no doubt improved components, antenna etc.
Will report back if/when set up.
    Thanks again.

  • I have Win XP on a Dell 9100. I had FF 3.6.10 & tried many times to upgrade to 3.6.11 --- all unsuccessful. The next day, I saw 3.6.12 downloading. I seem to now have 3.6.12 . I don't know about 3.6.11 . How can I check on this?

I have had Mozilla Firefox for years. My computer is a Dell 9100 , and I use Windows XP. I have upgraded to each version of Firefox that was offered to me. Each upgrade was quick and easily done--up to, and including, Firefox 3.6.10 . I tried many times to upgrade to Firefox 3.6.11 , each time with no success. I have something like 21 copies of the downloaded Firefox 3.6.11 package. The next day, I resumed by quest to download & install 3.6.11 and saw, on my monitor, the 3.6.12 version of Firefox downloading. I don't recall how this happened. I know that I was only trying to download and install version 3.6.11 . Now, I seem to have, by looking at "About Mozilla Firefox" under "Help", Firefox 3.6.12 .
Q1. Is there a way I can check to see whether I have a valid download of 3.6.11 and/or 3.6.12 in my Firefox setup?
Q2. How can I know that all is OK, Firefox-wise? The answer to this question probably can help me a lot, in the future.
Q3. Can I delete all, or perhaps all but one, of those 3.6.11 downloads?
Q4. Any idea on why my difficulties occurred?
Q5. How might I avoid these difficulties in the future?
    Thank you for your help.

Firefox 3.6.12 is the current version and it was released only a few days after the release of Firefox 3.6.11 to fix a critical security issue that was discovered. The security fix was prepared and released within 48 hours after discovery.
I do not know what caused your problems in trying to upgrade to Firefox 3.6.11, but the point is moot now. Should you have future problems upgrading, please post back here and someone will assist you.
You can keep one copy of version 3.6.11 if you wish; I usually keep 2 prior versions plus the current version.
You can download the full version(s), not just the small update, from: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/

How do I connect to Time Capsule from a Windows 8.1 machine which is on a Windows domain. I have been able to connect from a Windows 7 machine on a Windows domain to a Time Capsule. Airport utility is not displaying the Time Capsule Win8.1 machine.
I have checked that the firmware has been updated to 7.6.4 . Similalrly the Win8.1 machine has been loaded with the update specified in another discussion.

Firstly how are you connecting to the TC.. wireless or ethernet?
Please open a command window and ping it.. ping by name and by IP address.
If ping succeeds at least by IP it should work.
    In windows explorer type
\\10.0.1.1 (or whatever the TC ip is.. that is the default).
Having the airport utility for windows loaded can help the process. As it loads bonjour for windows.
7.6.4 firmware on the TC is useless. It works better on 7.6.1
If the ping does not succeed by either name or IP address yet you have internet through the TC, then your network is setup wrongly. You are have firewalls blocking local IP. Take down all the firewalls.

  • How can I uninstall Labview run time engine from the machine?

I understand that Labview has not given any provision to show customized 'License Agreement screen'. Isn't it? This is the main cause of my problem. Since I want to show our own license agreement (LA) screen, I made the one using Labview. To show this license agreement screen, I first install a small application which has only this LA screen with Labview run time engine. The customer can see License Agreement Screen with Labview Run Time Engine on his machine. If My customer accepts the LA, I will install the main application further by calling another setup.EXE file.
If my customer selects 'Do Not Agree' to the LA, I will quit the installation process. Here I also want to 'uninstall' Labview Run Time Engine
from his machine since he doesn't accept License. I would like to know how to uninstall Labview run time engine from his machine?
Another way which I could think is to run the LA screen from the CD with Labview run time engine on the CD. I will start installing the main S/W to the customer's machine with LABview Run Time Engine only after he accepts License agreement. I would like to know how to run the Labview application from CD without installing run time engine on the target machine?
Can anyone suggest solution to my problem?
    Thanks,
    Chander

    J-Tek,
I would suggest re-installing the Run-time Engine and then uninstalling it after a reboot. Also, you can download a program called Msicuu.exe (for NT, 2000, XP or Msicu.exe for 9x) to help clean up the registry for uninstalled programs.

  • Time of the client machine

    Hi,
Thanks for reading my post in advance.
I am working on this code to read the time on the client machine which could be locations outside the USA also.
Is there a way I can code so that I can get what the time running on the client machine.
I did some research on the internet and a found a code which gives some ideas about the date format on the client machine.
Is there a way we can modify this code so we can see the time client running on the client's machine.
    <%
    // get client locale
    java.util.Locale locale = request.getLocale();
// get Dateformat for client's locale
    java.text.DateFormat dateFormat =
         java.text.DateFormat.getDateTimeInstance(
              java.text.DateFormat.LONG,
              java.text.DateFormat.LONG, locale);
    %>
    <%=dateFormat.format( new java.util.Date() ) %>

You have mentioned in your post that you are trying to find out the time on the Client Machine. It does not clarify if code running on server itself is acting as client or it is the code running on the browser.
If it is the browser then the code that you have posted may not be of any help as Java does not run on the browser(except in applet). You will have to use the Date class of JavaScript. If you make an instance of this class in JavaScript with default constructor it will be initialized by the time of the machine where the browser is running.
If you want to have the time of the server where your jsp code is converted into html, you can use the GregorianCalendar class. The default constructor initialize itself with the date and time of the machine on which the application/web server is running. You can use the methods of this class to retrieve the different parameters of date and time.
    HTH.
