Time Warner: Metered/Capped Internet Serivce, paying by the GB.

{please move if placed in wrong subforum, thanks moderators}
Time Warner is now monitoring and cappng Internet Usage. New pricing and new plans are now in place. This will be a major downfall for TimeWarner. It is utter nonsense especially implementing this during and economic crisis. Who is going to pay 1$ per GB, with a 5GB, 10GB, 20GB, 40GB a month plan? Movies, Games, Applications consume enormous amounts of space. 8 to 15GB. These new metered plans are nothing new, countries like Australia have metered ISP's, if you go over the limit, you pay the price. Horrible, expensive and very unfortunate.
My experience with Verizon services have been EXCELLENT. Never had a single problem. I'm in Florida and even after 5 Hurricanes hit the state, I awlays had internet[FiOS] and backup power.
Verizon, I ask that you please Do Not take the same route as Time Warner. Your services, products, availability and pricing are beyond amazing. Internet has always been Unlimited here in the USA and it should stay that way.
Only one question remains, Will Verizon take the same route as Time Warner? or will you all stay on your current path?
Good day.

"Web users, the meter is running. In a strategy that's likely to rankle consumers but be copied by competitors, Time Warner Cable (TWC) is pressing ahead with a plan to charge Internet customers based on how much Web data they consume. Starting next month, the company will introduce tiered pricing in several markets.
In the case of Time Warner Cable, customers will be charged from $29.95 to $54.90 a month, based on data consumption and desired connection speed. Customers will be charged $1 for each gigabyte (GB) over their plan's cap. Time Warner Cable offers four cap levels of 5, 10, 20, and 40 GB. A download of a high-definition movie typically eats up about 8 GB. A recent report from Sanford C. Bernstein suggests that a family on the 40 GB plan that streams 7.25 hours of online video a week (a fraction of the 60 hours Americans spend watching TV in a week) could end up spending $200 per month on broadband usage fees. And that's just for video viewing, before factoring in such Internet activities as music downloads and photo sharing. "To put it mildly," says Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett, "the decision to limit data consumption can be expected to have profound implications for [consumer] behavior."

This time in 50 years will be looked at just like we look back in the 50's and laugh at when people scoffed at the idea of computers being used as primary data input tools, paying to mail a letter. It's all relative. Nothing is ever going to go down in price or stay the same. This is only logical.

  • Time Warner (Road Runner) Internet service - Slow Connection

In my office, we just got Time Warner Cable internet service. We had a T1 with Covad, but we needed to save money.
Now, with the Covad T1, every computer in my office (3 macs and 2 pcs) were all getting a consistent download speed of 1500kbps and upload speed to 1500kbps. That is fine, as that is what we were paying for.
Now, with the Time Warner Cable internet, we are paying for 7000kbps download speed and 768kbps upload speed. Every machine in my office is getting this speed except the Mac G5 (OS 10.3.9) on my desk. My Mac G5 is getting anywhere from 1000-3000kbps download speed and 768kbps upload speed.
As far as I can tell, the problem has to be in my mac. Can somebody please give me a direction to go that might help me get the internet speeds that I am supposed to be getting? The speeds that all the other computer on my network are getting?

First, be sure you are making an Apples-to-Apples comparison. There are lots of ways to get different results.
Then fire up Network Utility (in the Utilities folder) and check your Ethernet (en0). You should see it using the speed you expect ( 1 Gb??) and you should see several error counters that are very nearly zero. If any of these counters are not essentially zero, or climb as you use the Internet, you have a marginal communication problem, possibly a bad cable.
If you are in fact using Gigabit Ethernet, remember that the cables must have all 4 pairs present and firmly mounted in the connectors, because unlike 10 Base-T or 100 Base-T, Gigabit Ethernet uses all four pairs. There is a maximum cable length, but it is about 100 meters (the length of an American Football field).
Network Utility also has a Ping function, and you can ping a convenient nearby node, such as your Router or one of those other computers that seems to be getting better download speeds than you. If several rounds of 10 pings complete without errors or huge time intervals, you could try pinging something farther away, such as your ISP or Microsoft, or Apple, Inc.

  • Can I use my WRT54G as a DHCP server only? I've got 5 dynamic IP's from Time Warner..

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if I can use my WRT54G as a DHCP server only only my network, without having to have any of my PC's plugged into it's router ports?  I looked at the settings but I couldn't get it to work.
Here's why:  I just got Time Warner Business Class cable internet which comes with 5 dynamic IP's.  I want each computer, well 4 of them at least and 1 for the WRT54G, to have a unique IP when accessing the internet, and the other computers (5 more computers) to use the DHCP server in the WRT54G to get a NAT IP for use on the internet.
We play Diablo II on the internet and only 4 computers can be connected through 1 IP, so that limits us in my current configuration.
Current Equipment: One WRT54G, one Netgear GS116 16 port gigabit non-managed switch.  One Time Warner Cable modem.  Also attached to the network is one HP network printer, a Buffalo LinkStation NAS and a Zensonic Network DVD player.
Current config:  Cable modem -->  WRT54G --> Netgear switch.
Ideal config: Cable modem -->  Netgear switch -->  WRT54G.
With my current config, I am not taking advantage of the 5 dynamic IP's, but all the computers connected to the Netgear switch or the WRT54G can connect to the internet and the NAS.
So my ideal config (where I don't have to buy anything and where all the computers can print and access the NAS) is to connect all the computers and devices to the Netgear Switch and somehow force 4 of the computers and the WRT54G to get a dynamic IP from the cable modem, while the other computers and devices use the DHCP server on the WRT54G to get to the internet.
    Is this possible?
I called Time Warner Cable and they weren't any help.  I called the Linksys sales department and they weren't of much help either.
I suppose that I could purchase a new 8 port switch and attach 4 computers, the cable modem and the WRT54G to it.  Then attach the Netgear to the WRT54G to accomodate the printer, NAS, and the other 5 computers.  But in that senario, the 4  computers connected to the new switch can't print and can't reach the NAS.  And geez, some computers would have to go through 3 devices to reach the internet, which has got to slow them down.
I did read about the Linksys EFG120 which has a DHCP server, but at $400 and only 120 gigs, it doesn't work for me.
I called Time Warner and the cost of more dynamic IP's is prohibitive, I'm already paying $79 a month for this internet and they want another $50 a month for 7 more dynamic IP's and that wouldn't help my NAS or my printer.
The cost of a 16 port gigabit switch with DHCP is an amazing $800 or so, which is out of the question.
Sorry for being so long winded and thanks for reading this far.  I'm looking forward to any replies.

That is a hell of a setup. I don't know if it would be easier and cheaper to either buy a real router like a Cisco, get fixed IP addresses and a RV042, or buy 4 network cards for the four of the five computers which need the internet access for gaming.
    O.K. First your setup:
    1. You wire the modem to the 6-port switch.
    2. You connect the remaining 5 ports with the WAN ports of 5 WRTs with DHCP on the WAN interface.
    3. You configure each WRT with unique LAN IP addresses in the same subnet, e.g. 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0, 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3, 192.168.1.4, 192.168.1.5.
    4. You turn off all DHCP servers except on one, e.g. 192.168.1.1. That router will be the default router and internet connection for any client which gets dynamic LAN addresses (as fallback or guests, I would not configure the NAS or printer with DHCP addresses if you have everything else on static IP addresses). You can certainly disable all DHCP servers if you want, too.
    5. Now you connect all WRTs with each other.
5a. You connect port 1 of the 1st WRT with port 1 of the 2nd.
You connect port 2 of the 2nd with port 1 of the 3rd.
Port 2 of the 3rd with port 1 of the 4th.
Port 2 of the 4th with port 1 of the 5th.
(Do not create a loop connecting port 2 of the 5th with port 2 of the 1st!!)
5b. You buy another switch and connect each port 1 of each router with this switch. This has the advantage that you don't have a long cascade between the 1st and the 5th router like in 5a.
    6. You connect all devices to the LAN.
6a. If you did 5a, you will probably put each computer to the router which internet connection it uses. The NAS and printer could go anywhere.
6b. If you did 5b, you hopefully bought a 16 or 24 port switch. Then you plug simply everything into that switch. Otherwise you can certainly use the free ports of the WRTs like in 6a.
    7. You configure all your devices with static IP addresses. For instance,
    IP 192.168.1.11
    netmask 255.255.255.0
    gateway 192.168.1.1
For the DNS servers I would highly recommend to use the DNS servers of your ISP directly and not use the relay on 192.168.1.1.
The gateway address defines through which router the computer connects to the internet.
    8. You may still have to configure port forwardings on the router to the game computer if required for the game.
An interesting alternative to this setup might be to buy 4/5 network cards for the 4/5 computers with direct internet access. Then you use the one network card to connect to your single LAN behind your single WRT. The other network card goes into the switch behind the modem and has direct internet access. You then have to tell Windows which of the network cards has the default gateway for the internet connection (to prevent routing all traffic through the LAN and the WRT to the internet). One game computer would have to be behind the WRT.

  • Time Warner Issues

First off, let me give you a rundown of the internet devices in my house.
    2 MacBooks
    1 PC
    1 Laptop PC
    2 iPod Touches
    and an xbox 360.
I am using Time Warner as my internet provider and I have an Airport Extreme.
Every 2-6 hours, I will be kicked off of the internet.
I will still get a wireless signal, but cannot load any new pages.
I go to my modem and turn it off, wait 5 seconds and then turn it back on. After that, it's good for another 2-6 hours.
Anyone have a problem like this?
Please please please help me out.
I am getting tired of going and turning my modem off and then back on, when I know there has to be a better answer to this.
    Thanks in advance.

Dude.  You are awesome! I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad you posted this solution.  The fact that you took the time to post even AFTER you figured out a solution shows how thoughtful you are as an individual.
Its amazing to me that someone would comment adversely becuase they feel its in the wrong forum.  If it affected their life as it does mine then they would get it.  Amazing how people cant see past themselves.  Who cares what forum its in if its informative? Worse case just move it to a different forum.  We need more people like you and less like them in the world.
Thanks Im gonna try the solution right now!

  • Advice with Time Warner / Focus Receivables Management

Very likely that's the case then.

    snooze_sensei wrote:
I'm trying to rebuild (2nd time) my credit. I had it fixed last year, but Focus Receivables pounced after I bought a new car and placed a previously un-listed and re-aged account from Time Warner. Despite the account being from 2010, they placed it as 2014.  I disputed the account, and simply got a "consumer disputes this information" line added to my report (worthless). I asked for DV, and got NO response. I filed a complaint with the FTC, and the complaint was closed as "debt valid".  Problem is, I can't even seem to PAY this debt, no matter how valid it may be! Focus has never sent me anything by mail. I have sent them DV request by mail with my current address, and also provided my address via the FTC complaint. I also emailed their debtor email address with my name & address requesting they send me information in regards to the debt they have listed under my name. Absolutely no communication from them. How am I supposed to pay them? I tried calling Time Warner directly, but they can't find the account. The phone rep suggested I go to the local Time Warner store and they "might" be able to find the account. However, the "local" store is 100 miles away because I moved out of area!  Has anyone had luck with paying off an old account (5 years) at the local store and having it marked paid or removed? Honestly, as much as I'd like it removed, I'd even take it being marked PAID. Many mortgage lenders will not lend to you if there is ANYTHING unresolved on your credit, regardless of score. So this is completely forcing my hand and I'm going to have to rent for another 6 months or year until I can get this resolved. Therein lies the issue. A DV imposes a cease collection bar until they provide you with validation. It does not require removal of any reporting. The DV has placed you in "limbo". They cannot legally deal with you until they provide validation. The fact that TW can't seem to find any information may be the reason for the delay in validation. In order for them to make any kind of deal with you, the DV will need to be rescinded.

Please, has anyone here formatted the Time Capsule as a internet server?
Is the a special way to format the Time Capsule for,

Thank you in advance for any shared informations.

Just note Apple states specifically not to store the iphoto library on network drives.
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5168 Although mostly about FAT32           it adds network drives.
In fact I think it dangerous to have any live files ie ones you are actually working on stored on the TC and not your local drive/s. If you store files on the TC be aware at least that you will also experience some slow operations of some things.

  • Verizon/Time Warner Routing Issue

I've been having trouble logging on to my email through Outlook, IPad, or IPhone.  The service provider is Time Warner.  Apparently the problem is a routing issue between Time Warner and Verizon and they've had the routing issues for over 2 months and have still not resolved the problem.  Since no one at Verizon seems to know anything about this, does anyone have any information as to when the issue will be resolved?

I can sign in using webmail and see my email.  But I can't use Outlook, my IPad or IPhone utilities to see my email using TW as a provider.  If I'm anywhere else, using any other provider, I can use Outlook, my IPad and IPhone without any problems.
When I called TW, they told me the problem was a routing issue that both TW and Verizon were working on and had been working on for at least 2 months, but no solution yet.  They were surprised that no one at Verizon knew this.
Since everything worked fine until a week ago and nothing changed in my settings and Verizon verified that everything was set up correctly, I'm satisfied that this is the issue.  My concern is that not one Verizon representative has acknowledged that there is a routing problem between TW and Verizon; especially if the problem has existed well over 2 months.  You would think that an issue like this should be shared among all their troubleshooting team.

    on August 7th
I purchased a brand new computer that has
    Vista Home premium on it,
To date I have not been unable to open this program.

The Welcome center comes up when I start the Computer.
when I click on Internet explorer this is what I get.
Internet Explorer Cannot Display the web Page"
    Most likely Causes:
*You are not connected to the Internet.
    * The web site is encountering problems.
    * There might be a typing error in the address.
    "What can you try"
    'Diagnose Connection Problems"
I did this and this is what I got.
Windows did not find any problems with this

    Victoria,
There are a few reasons that the error may come up. The first thing that I need to ask is when you say "I have been all over the net, I have tried Lenovo sites.', is this on the new computer? (i.e.. You are able to browse the internet, but get the error every time you initially launch Internet Explorer)
If so, the likely issue is that the particular web site that your home page is set too is invalid or is encountering problems.

  • AirPort Express and Time Warner Wideband Internet

    So.
I live in an apartment with four other people, and just yesterday we had installed Time Warners 50Mb wideband service. The modem with which the service comes is an SMC Networks SMCD3GN modem and wireless router combination.
With infinite grace and kindness, Time Warner has taken the time to hardcode the name of the wireless network as well as the password and -not- allow me access to the management software on the router. Since technically I am leasing this equipment from them, they have no problem doing this to me. If I'd like, I could call Time Warner and have them change the function of the equipment from modem and router to just modem.
My question is this: can I use the AirPort Express A1264 as a wireless router -without- sacrificing speeds? I rudimentarily installed the APE (is that the acronym people use?) just plugging into it an outgoing ethernet cable from the router, and when I connected to the network, I was getting speeds of about 10Mb, not the 50 I'm paying for.
And while I'm here, what's the best way to boost the 38Mb speeds I get on my wireless network vs the almost 50 wired? I have a feeling it has something to do with interference (I'm in a big building in New York and there must be over 25 other networks I pick up) but like I said I can't change that without access to my router.
Help me squeeze every last kb/s out of this situation!
    Thaaank you
    Will

My question is this: can I use the AirPort Express A1264 as a wireless router -without- sacrificing speeds?
Any router, with NAT enabled, will introduce some "loss" of bandwidth across the WAN-to-LAN interface. That would be true for both the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) or the SMC Gateway that was provided to you by your ISP. Disabling the SMC's NAT and substituting the NAT service provided by the AX will probably not "buy" you any additional performance gains.
The reality is that no one experiences speeds anywhere near to what their ISP claims to offer, at least not when it comes to Web surfing. This isn't entirely the ISP's fault. The ISP's claimed throughput rates are for sustained downloads of an individual file ... and from their Internet infrastructure servers. 99% of the time you will not be accessing web pages from their servers but from other servers located elsewhere on the Internet.
As you know web pages are typically made up of several files—the HTML code, graphics, Flash elements, and so forth—each of which has its own latency. And then there are all the vagaries of the Internet as data from the Web site hops from router to router down to your computer. This is why, when ISPs advertise download speeds, they're only referring to downloads directly from their own servers.
And while I'm here, what's the best way to boost the 38Mb speeds I get on my wireless network vs the almost 50 wired?
There's at least two things that you can do to improve your local wireless network bandwidth: 1) Operate the network in 802.11n only mode in the 5 GHz radio band. If the router offers it, make sure that you run this network in a "wide" or "double" band mode, and 2) Remove all sources of Wi-Fi interference. The second one will definitely prove to be more challenging in your current environment.

This sounds like a virus or malware program that has made its way onto your computer.  I would ensure you have the latest virus definitions on your computer and run a thorough (complete) scan of your system.  If this doesn't work, I would suggest  you use Microsoft's Malware Removal Tool.  You can download it at the link below.   Hope this helps.

  • Verizon Internet OUT, Time Warner IN...now what ?

Verizon has not provided me consistent reliable service in the past 3 months. So I am making the jump to Time Warner Cable Road Runner Internet service.
Simply, what changes do I need to do with the Mac OS X Server settings on my end to make the transition smooth ? (pointer records changed, MX records, Forwarders updated, named.conf updated) ?
Just wondering so I don't fall into a surprise.
    THANKS !

hello, when you are using speedtest.net or a similar flash-based site to measure your connection speed, it might be an issue with the protected mode that [http://blogs.adobe.com/asset/2012/06/inside-flash-player-protected-mode-for-firefox.html adobe has introduced] for its flash plugin for firefox. some old versions of f-secure or trusteer rapport are known to cause such slowdowns together with flash, or it might be something similar on your system that is interfering (maybe security software that is blocking/sandboxing the container used for the protected mode, etc...).
as a workaround you could try [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/flash-113-crashes#w_solution-2-downgrade-to-flash-10-3 downgrading to flash 10.3] (which is still supported) or [http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1018071#TemporaryWorkaround disabling protected mode] & see if this makes a difference.

  • Airport Extreme 6th generation and Time Warner, Arris modem - no internet on mac

After installing a new Time Warner Arris modem we have encountered the following issues:
Light is green on the airport and everything appears normal
Wifi only works on iPhones, roku, and windows laptops.
Ethernet from airport extreme is also working (xbox one works fine).
Wifi internet does NOT work on Mac computers (we have two in the house both running Yosemite).  The light on the airport is green and the macs can connect to wifi but cannot connect to the internet (DNS issue?).
The wifi on my mac yosemite laptop does work on my office wireless and anywhere else but home.
    Backstory:
So a few months ago I purchased a brand new 6th generation Airport Extreme 802.11ac.  It worked fine with our old generic Time Warner cable modem until we forced to upgrade to a new Arris modem/router combination this weekend to upgrade our internet speeds (I don't recall the model I can get this later).  We told TWC that we did not need a router and would prefer to use the Apple router but they said it would work just as before by just plugging it into the ethernet port.
Initially we had network errors and I had to change from NAT to Bridge mode on the airport extreme and this worked for about a day.  The next morning I could only get internet and wifi on my iPhone or a windows machine elsewhere in the house.
What I tried (none of these worked):
resetting the router and modem worked briefly but the problem repeated itself a few hours later or after connecting to a different wireless network.
    deleting network config files (http://osxdaily.com/2014/10/25/fix-wi-fi-problems-os-x-yosemite/).
deleting the wireless network from saved networks and connecting again.
Again this is a problem with mac laptops ONLY.  I have no machines running an older version of OS X so I can't test that easily (I can borrow one from a friend to rule that out).   We have 2 Mac computers both running yosemite and both have the same problem.  Every other wireless device in the house works like a charm. Any ideas?

(using a White, new Surfboard 6141 and Time Warner as provider)
This is a simple cable modem, that will deliver only one IP address to the AirPort Extreme.
My apple extreme in set in Bridge,(by default it is a 2007 model. Has never been a problem when I used Verizon.
Bridge Mode is not the correct setting for the AirPort Extreme. It needs to be in a Router Mode of DHCP and NAT.
Bridge Mode would have been the correct setting with a Verizon modem/router......but the SB6141 is not a router....it is a simple modem.
You can try to make the settings change to see if that will work, but in most cases when you are making a modem change on a network, it is recommended to first reset the AirPort Extreme back to factory default settings  (to wipe older and possibly conflicting settings), and then configure the AirPort to work with the new modem.

  • Consistently losing internet connectivity with AE and Time Warner

I am trying to help a friend fix a long-standing issue with her wireless network.
    1. Her ISP is Time Warner - she has a cable modem.
    2. She has an Airport Express plugged into it.
    3. She has several Macs, a PC, and 2 iPhone connected wirelessly.
    4. She tells me that several times a week she loses connectivity. My friend fixes it by recycling both the AE and TW cable modem.
    5. Apple replaced the AE even though they didn't think anything was wrong with it. The problem persisted. Her boyfriend tried two other WAPs, the problem persisted.
    6. Her boyfriend thinks that on a few occasions the wireless network still was up, but they were not getting internet through it.
    7. She has had TW out multiple times and they say everything is fine on their end. They said they may have MAC addresses that are "too close together" and my friend should turn on MAC filtering. This makes no sense to me - MAC filtering is for security.
Her boyfriend is going to plug his computer directly into the TW cable modem the next time they lose wireless internet connectivity, but I said I would go over and take a look.
I think the best idea is just rebuild their wireless network (I have "Take Control of Your 802.11 Wireless Network" - great book) and see if that helps. But I would appreciate any troubleshooting assistance.

    Welcome to the discussions!
+She has had TW out multiple times and they say everything is fine on their end. They said they may have MAC addresses that are "too close together" and my friend should turn on MAC filtering. This makes no sense to me - MAC filtering is for security.+
Unfortunately, you'll need to resign yourself to the fact that there will be little if any real assistance from the cable company. The stuff about MAC addresses being too close together, etc is total nonsense. As you point out, MAC Filtering would have no application here either.
+She tells me that several times a week she loses connectivity. My friend fixes it by recycling both the AE and TW cable modem. Apple replaced the AE even though they didn't think anything was wrong with it. The problem persisted. Her boyfriend tried two other WAPs, the problem persisted+
These are clear symptoms that interference of some type is affecting performance on the network. The first thing to do to help improve things is move the Express from it's probable current location down low on the wall behind the cabinet out to an open area where it can radiate its signal as freely as possible. This means using an AC extension cord to place the Express in a better position.
The next thing to do is make sure that the Express is not located near any other electrical devices, cordless phones, televisions, etc. These can all interfere with the wireless signal.
These actions may solve the issue. If not, you'll need to start experimenting with different channels for the wireless network on the Express as other nearby wireless networks may be using the same channel or a close adjacent channel. Start at Channel 11 and start working down until you find a more reliable channel, or run out of channels.
+Her boyfriend is going to plug his computer directly into the TW cable modem the next time they lose wireless internet connectivity+
Not really a good idea unless he knows how to fully reset the modem before he connects it to his computer and then do the same again when connecting back to the AirPort Express. I'm not sure what he hopes to gain by doing this.

    Good idea.

  • Cannot access rented movies via Clear USB Internet connection, but can via wifi and Time Warner Cable.  Has anyone encountered the same thing?

I recently rented a movie from iTunes (version 10.4.1.10 on a Windows 7 professional laptop) and when I am at home, on my Clear USB connection, I don't see the Rented Movies in my Library.  When I bring my laptop to work however, and connect to a Time Warner Internet connection via wifi, I am able to see my Rented Movies in my Library.  Has anyone experienced anything similar?

    The problem is similar to
