Time Warner (Road Runner) Internet service - Slow Connection

In my office, we just got Time Warner Cable internet service. We had a T1 with Covad, but we needed to save money.
Now, with the Covad T1, every computer in my office (3 macs and 2 pcs) were all getting a consistent download speed of 1500kbps and upload speed to 1500kbps. That is fine, as that is what we were paying for.
Now, with the Time Warner Cable internet, we are paying for 7000kbps download speed and 768kbps upload speed. Every machine in my office is getting this speed except the Mac G5 (OS 10.3.9) on my desk. My Mac G5 is getting anywhere from 1000-3000kbps download speed and 768kbps upload speed.
As far as I can tell, the problem has to be in my mac. Can somebody please give me a direction to go that might help me get the internet speeds that I am supposed to be getting? The speeds that all the other computer on my network are getting?

First, be sure you are making an Apples-to-Apples comparison. There are lots of ways to get different results.
Then fire up Network Utility (in the Utilities folder) and check your Ethernet (en0). You should see it using the speed you expect ( 1 Gb??) and you should see several error counters that are very nearly zero. If any of these counters are not essentially zero, or climb as you use the Internet, you have a marginal communication problem, possibly a bad cable.
If you are in fact using Gigabit Ethernet, remember that the cables must have all 4 pairs present and firmly mounted in the connectors, because unlike 10 Base-T or 100 Base-T, Gigabit Ethernet uses all four pairs. There is a maximum cable length, but it is about 100 meters (the length of an American Football field).
Network Utility also has a Ping function, and you can ping a convenient nearby node, such as your Router or one of those other computers that seems to be getting better download speeds than you. If several rounds of 10 pings complete without errors or huge time intervals, you could try pinging something farther away, such as your ISP or Microsoft, or Apple, Inc.

That toolbar/ct plugin seems to cause problems for all who install it!
Close Safari, then locate and delete the following files and it should be gone:
    /Library/Application Support/Conduit
    /Library/InputManagers/CTLoader
    /Library/Receipts/ctloader.pkg
    /Library/Receipts/<Toolbar name>.pkg
    /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/CT2285220.bundle
    /Users/<User name>/Library/Application Support/Conduit
where / is the root library on your Hard Disk.
If you are running Snow Leopard you should also look here:
    Library/launchAgents/com.conduit.loader.agent.plist
    Library/Application support/conduit plugins
    Also, as mentioned by Gilli2000:
Library/Receipts - If you read it, it has information in it at the bottom referring extensively to "CT" and "community toolbar".
Maybe it is harmless, but trash those items anyway!
Note: Safari does not support any third-party toolbars except those supplied as an extension to Safari via the Extension Gallery.

  • Apple E-mail users aren't receiving E-mail from Time-Warner (Road Runner) customers

I can't find any appropriate place to report this on Apple's site.  After a couple of friends suddenly didn't receive my E-mails, I noticed that they're both using me.com or mac.com addresses.  Everyone else gets my messages fine.
Turns out that Time-Warner cable customers (at least in southern California) can't send E-mail to me.com or mac.com addresses right now.  And any attempt to report the problem there is met with extreme ignorance of how E-mail works.  I escalated the problem as far as they could (ooh, "level 3" technician) and didn't talk to a single person who understood E-mail servers at even a basic level.
Turns out that this isn't even a new problem.  It has afflicted customers in other parts of the country before: http://9to5mac.com/2011/12/07/emails-from-roadrunner-and-comcast-not-playing-nic e-with-apples-servers
Anybody notice this, or know where we're supposed to report it?

I live in Wisconsin and am experiencing the same issue.  I have friends using Roadrunner in Green Bay and Milwaukee who send messages to my me.com account which I never receive.  They get the following bounce back message:
    From: Mail Administrator [mailto:[email protected]]
    Sent: Wednesday, January 30, 2008 4:24 PM
To: Customer Email Address Goes Here
    Subject: Mail System Delivery Report
As part of the delivery process, your message was relayed to a machine which does not handle delivery status notifications. As a result, it is not possible to determine whether the message will get to its final destination. Please reply to <[email protected]> if you feel this message to be in error.
A likely cause of this message is that you sent a message to someone and you had "Receipt Requested" turned on, hoping to get an acknowledgement that your recipient received the message in question. Receipts such as this are also called "Delivery Status Notifications", and some mail systems are configured to not send receipts, due to local policy implemented there. What this message is telling you is that you sent a message with receipt requested to a site that does not provide such receipts.
    No solution at this point.

  • Time Warner: Metered/Capped Internet Serivce, paying by the GB.

    {please move if placed in wrong subforum, thanks moderators}
Time Warner is now monitoring and cappng Internet Usage. New pricing and new plans are now in place. This will be a major downfall for TimeWarner. It is utter nonsense especially implementing this during and economic crisis. Who is going to pay 1$ per GB, with a 5GB, 10GB, 20GB, 40GB a month plan? Movies, Games, Applications consume enormous amounts of space. 8 to 15GB. These new metered plans are nothing new, countries like Australia have metered ISP's, if you go over the limit, you pay the price. Horrible, expensive and very unfortunate.
My experience with Verizon services have been EXCELLENT. Never had a single problem. I'm in Florida and even after 5 Hurricanes hit the state, I awlays had internet[FiOS] and backup power.
Verizon, I ask that you please Do Not take the same route as Time Warner. Your services, products, availability and pricing are beyond amazing. Internet has always been Unlimited here in the USA and it should stay that way.
Only one question remains, Will Verizon take the same route as Time Warner? or will you all stay on your current path?
    Good day.

"Web users, the meter is running. In a strategy that's likely to rankle consumers but be copied by competitors, Time Warner Cable (TWC) is pressing ahead with a plan to charge Internet customers based on how much Web data they consume. Starting next month, the company will introduce tiered pricing in several markets.
In the case of Time Warner Cable, customers will be charged from $29.95 to $54.90 a month, based on data consumption and desired connection speed. Customers will be charged $1 for each gigabyte (GB) over their plan's cap. Time Warner Cable offers four cap levels of 5, 10, 20, and 40 GB. A download of a high-definition movie typically eats up about 8 GB. A recent report from Sanford C. Bernstein suggests that a family on the 40 GB plan that streams 7.25 hours of online video a week (a fraction of the 60 hours Americans spend watching TV in a week) could end up spending $200 per month on broadband usage fees. And that's just for video viewing, before factoring in such Internet activities as music downloads and photo sharing. "To put it mildly," says Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett, "the decision to limit data consumption can be expected to have profound implications for [consumer] behavior."

This time in 50 years will be looked at just like we look back in the 50's and laugh at when people scoffed at the idea of computers being used as primary data input tools, paying to mail a letter. It's all relative. Nothing is ever going to go down in price or stay the same. This is only logical.

  • Network slowed down - Road Runner

I've had terribly slow Internet access for about a week and a half now. All my devices are getting 6-8 Mb/sec from Time Warner Road Runner, and I was consistently getting 15-20 MBs.
Time Warner was here today, and the Windows box they plugged directly into the modem was getting 15 Mb+. My souped up iMac, plugged directly in, was getting 6-8 Mb.
The same holds for all my other devices - all iOS. iPad, iPhone, AppleTV -- all experiencing slow Internet.
The Time Warner tech says they've been upgrading software on their modems recently - in the time range that I've been experiencing problems.
Anyone else seeing trouble with their Time Warner Road Runner Internet connection?

We used my cabling, which we swapped out with other cables, just to be doubly sure.
In short, the only obvious difference was that my system is entirely Apple and hers was Windows.
I'm somewhat confident that a change somewhere - either in the modem or upstream, or in the Apple ecosystem - has diminished my performance.
I know that all my network routers - the Time Capsule and two Airport Expresses - were updated. I did not think the desktop received any kind of an update that affected networking. (I have a third Express, first generation, that has not been updated recently).
As my performance was bad when connecting the desktop directly to the modem with two different ethernet cables (and those same cables were used to connect the tech's Windows laptop to the modem, with no performance problem), it seems something is going wrong on my desktop, iPad and iPhone, all of which report 6-8 Mb/s when the Windows machine was getting 15+ and that's what I consistently received before a week or two ago.

  • TC not working on new internet service provider.

I had my time capsule all set up and running fine before. I moved and got Time Warner Road Runner internet. Now my TC won't connect when I plug the modem into it and I get the flashing amber light.  When I plug the cable into my computer the internet works fine. Also I can see my wifi network name on my computers but its not connected to the internet. I don't have my Mac desktop with me yet which I used to configure the TC the first time. I have just my PC laptop and iPad. Do I need the desktop before the TC will work? Or should I be able to connect. Also I don't want to mess with the TC too much just in case my desktop is messed up after the move. Thanks!!!

How do I reset the ISP to the MAC address?
    To clarify:
    "MAC" = "media access control"
    "Mac" = Macintosh computer
You may have to call your ISP and ask them to reset the modem so that it accepts a new client.  This may involve resetting the MAC address to that of the Time Capsule.  If they need that address, it should appear on the case of the Time Capsule.

  • SPA941 issues when used with Road Runner Extreme (Time Warner) 30mb/s down, 5 mb/s up.

I use a SPA941 phone in my home office.
Until recently, my Internet bandwidth was through Time Warner Road Runner Turbo.  It generally worked well, but when I happened to be sending a large email or uploading a large file while on the phone, my voice would break up due to the upload bandwidth limitation.
Because of this, I upgraded to Road Runner Extreme (30mb/s download, 5mb/s upload). Now, although speedtest.net tests show that I have good bandwidth and latency, the mute button flashes red at various times througout the day, and at seemingly random times when I'm on the phone, the other party's voice will start to break up and/or cease completely, as though I have a download bandwidth problem... but a quick speedtest.net check shows that not to be the case.
I've spent hours (literally) on the phone with Time Warner 3rd level tech support, and they say everything is fine... and the issue must be with the phone.
    I'm using a Ubee DOCSIS 3.0 WLCM combination modem/router
Connected to the SPA941 via cat5 10/100 Ethernet.
    Has anyone encountered this problem?
    Does anyone have any suggestions?
Are there any settings on the phone that can be adjusted to help in this situation?
    Thanks,
    David

    Hi David,
After reviewing your post I see one important piece of information
"the mute button flashes red at various times througout the day"
Mute button flashing means the ethernet link went down.  That would be between the phone and the device the ethernet cable is connected to.  The SPA941 is 10mb half duplex device (no pc connection so it didn't need higher capacity).
It could be an auto negotiation issue with the network device.  Try forcing the link to 10mb half duplex or daisy chain a 3rd party switch/hub and see if the problem goes away.
One more possibility is IP address DHCP lease renews itself causing the link to go down and up.  You can also try setting static IP address with dns & gateway, etc..  into the SPA941.

  • Does Time Capsule and Time Warner Cable Road Runner work together?

I have Time Warner Cable Road Runner internet serve. I am currently using a Linksys WRT54G WiFi router to use my internet with my MacBook Pro. I am thinking about replacing my Linksys with a Time Capsule. Will the Time Capsule work with TWC Road Runner? I have looked all over with google and have not found an answer. I heard that you can't clone the MAC address of the Road Runner modem. To get my Linksys to work I had to clone the MAC address. Is this true?

I use time warner road runner ripoff and also have it hooked to my vonage router,a linksys with 2 telephone ports and 4 additional ports one of which is given to the TC, another to slingback and another to xbox and finnally he network printer.
The Linksys router , I believe is the main router and the TC is added on as a secondary router ad you choose this during set up, it can either be visible or invisible extending your present wireless setup.
After much tinkering I managed to get it working on the network, the TC that is seen by both my MacPro's and my OQO UMPC that is running Vista. I also hooked the TC up to a USB hub, another linksys, and attached a 1.5 GB Maxtor external drive. I plan to add another so I will have a total of 4 GB of storage.
The main problems I have encountered is my Mac pro seeing the configuration after going to sleep, seems to take a really long time and sometimes I have to restart the TC.
So far all I can say is it IS NOT as easy as Apple would like us to think it is. A lot of tinkering, and you should have a tad of knowledge of what your doing or your going to screw it up. Patience helps as well.
    cheers.

  • Verizon Internet OUT, Time Warner IN...now what ?

Verizon has not provided me consistent reliable service in the past 3 months. So I am making the jump to Time Warner Cable Road Runner Internet service.
Simply, what changes do I need to do with the Mac OS X Server settings on my end to make the transition smooth ? (pointer records changed, MX records, Forwarders updated, named.conf updated) ?
Just wondering so I don't fall into a surprise.
    THANKS !

hello, when you are using speedtest.net or a similar flash-based site to measure your connection speed, it might be an issue with the protected mode that [http://blogs.adobe.com/asset/2012/06/inside-flash-player-protected-mode-for-firefox.html adobe has introduced] for its flash plugin for firefox. some old versions of f-secure or trusteer rapport are known to cause such slowdowns together with flash, or it might be something similar on your system that is interfering (maybe security software that is blocking/sandboxing the container used for the protected mode, etc...).
as a workaround you could try [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/flash-113-crashes#w_solution-2-downgrade-to-flash-10-3 downgrading to flash 10.3] (which is still supported) or [http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1018071#TemporaryWorkaround disabling protected mode] & see if this makes a difference.

  • Checked my TW Road Runner Down & Up speed and performing fine. FF is hanging, disconnecting, slow, etc... What to do ?

Checked my Time Warner Road Runner Down & Up speed and performing fine. Fire Fox is hanging, disconnecting, slow, etc... What to do ?

At this point I think you should get Applejack...
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files! :-)
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.
Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply. For 10.5/10.6 Network, highlight Interface>Advanced button>DNS tab>little + icon.
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.
    For 10.5/10.6 Network, highlight Interface>Advanced button>DNS tab>little + icon.

  • Problems with Road Runner dialup software on new MacBook

My parents, who will be away from home need temporary dialup Internet access for several weeks on a new Macbook, are finding themselves unable to use the dialup software from their usual provider, Time Warner/Road Runner to dial into their account---apparently the software itself loads, but then it won't actually authenticate and dial. Road Runner says it's a Mac problem; Apple says it's a Road Runner problem. Has anyone experienced a similar problem and/or found a way to resolve it? Also, any suggestions of temporary-use low-cost dialup services that WILL work for the latest Macbook (with Intel software) would be helpful. Thank you.

No, the computer and external modem are connected correctly (as proven by the fact that Internet access seems to work OK on the MacBook through a temporary provider that we've found), but ultimately my parents would still like to use their regular Internet provider and are puzzled as to why the dialup for that works on their other OSX desktops but not on the new laptop. Thanks for the thought, though.
