Time zone adjustments and smart album filters

I just returned from a photo safari in Southeast Asia and while there I had my cameras set to the correct local time (GMT+7). Upon importing to Aperture I set both Camera Time and Actual TIme to the right place and chugged ahead. Now when I look at an actual image file's info the time is 'adjusted' for MST (my home time zone) but in Aperture the Meta Tooltips and Metadata show the GMT+7 time.
Now I want to create Smart Albums with the photos from each day from my (two) cameras. I've tried using the Date and Calendar filters but they both seem to use the MST time rather than the appropriate 'local' time. If I add "GMT" to the Date filter is does filter by GMT but that's not the result I want either.
Any hints on how to get this right?

Neil,
I've been struggling with similar issues to varying degrees for some time now. I have found it extremely frustrating in my attempts to adjust the date to reflect proper time zones and local times. The only time it seems to "get it right" is when I have my camera set to my local time zone, shoot in my local time zone and upload to my computer in my local time zone.
This is all fine and dandy for when I am shooting locally, but the reality for any photographer is that you never shoot just locally. That said, I have sought help on this issue myself and wrung my head to try to find an answer.
Thus far, I have come to one possible conclusion. It may have something to do with the way the computer's time zone is set in the system preferences. If you have the time zone set to "set time zone automatically using current location" this could throw things off. I am not certain about this, but I think it may have something to do with what is going on.
In your case, you had set the camera to the proper time zone, and when you imported the images, you set the camera and actual time zones to the proper time. However, if you have the time zone setting to set automatically based on location and you didn't import (or upload) the images in that time zone, it may throw things off.
For example, you set your camera for Cambodia time. You then import your images in New York. you set the camera time and the actual time to Cambodia time, but the computer time zone is set to New York EST. I think if you turn off (if you have it on in the first place) the automatic time zone setting, it may solve your problem. You may even have to set the time zone on your computer to the local time zone that you took the pictures in.
Aperture is really vague about how to go about doing this. It seems like it should be really simple and straight forward, but for months I have been scratching my head trying to figure out what is going wrong. It got me all confused as to what the camera time means and what the actual time means, etc.
Anyway, I am not sure if this is the answer that you are looking for. I am looking for answers myself, but rather than start my own thread, I thought I would chime in on yours to see if we can't get the ball rolling with some other users.

  • Disappearing thumbnails and smart albums

    Hi to you all,
I made a smart album of images that have missing faces data which works well. However, once I leave the smart album by selecting another project folder (that has images in it), I don't see any thumbnails in the browser view! The project has the total number of images in the folder but none are visible. I don't have any filters set either. The only way to view the thumbnails in a project is to restart AP. Seems it only happens when I select the smart album, add a few faces then click back to a project. Anyone had any issues like this? Can anyone replicate it? Thanks! Oh and I've repaired permissions, rebuilt the library

There seems to be a glitch with Stacks and Smart
Albums. If I base a smart album on a set of
parameters and the photo is not the select of a stack
it does not get selected for the smart album. For
example if I make a select based on a client then
choose later to make a 5 star rating out of the stack
that is not the select it will not appear in the 5
star library smart folder until I break the stack.
So I have to go back to the original stack and break
it to allow the search to work. Does anyone know
    how to fix this?
In the parameters for the smart album you need to check "Ignore Stack Groupings".
Be aware of an interesting issue you may run into later around this. If you drag a set of images out of a smart album that ignores groupings into a "normal" album that holds images, you will only see images that are also stack picks show up in the destination album. I have lobbied via feedback for Aperture to always make an image drug into an album from a smart album the "Album Pick" for that album to eliminate that exact problem.
Another odd behavior of smart albums you may find useful is that whatever level you define a smart album at is the level it always searches, no matter where you move it after. So you can make a top-level smart album doing a search across many folders and projects, and keep it neatly stored under a different top level folder where if you had tried to put the smart album to start with it would not see images.

See my reply to a later simplified version of your question. I don't think that either iPhone or iPad recognize RAW files such as NEFs. And the iPhone is not designed to be a mass storage device like a portable flash or portabel hard drive for temporary storage of files, if that's what you're after.  As I mentioned in my previous reply, I have an iPad and have been experimenting with it as a tool for photography, hoping that it would be a nice travel tool for backing up and viewing photos from my Nikon dslr. But both the iPad and iPhone just are not set up to do that well. Both show photos nicely, but organization of photos is very frustrating since you can't create albums on the iPhone or iPad, but only back on your sync computer. (There is one very powerful photo organization app called SortShots, but you import photos to it and it organizes and stores the images wtihin the app not using the native photo app. It doesn't work with NEFs either.) I don't know of any RAW processing software for either device.

  • Aperture ... Bug .... timezones and smart albums

    Hello everyone,
i've just jumped into the mac world a week ago, just bought my first macbook ! Yeah !
I decided to give Aperture a try, and given i've played with it now for 2 days, if this bug I found is really there, NO WAY am I going to pay for such software !
I've been using Picasa on PC for the past couple years now.
Its handling my photo library extremely well: over 50gb of photos, 10 years worth of photos.
So after looking at all the Aperture videos on the apple site, I decided to give it a try to replace my picasa, since there is no picasa for my new mac.
The bug I found (and I'm a newbie !, 2 days of playing, struggling to import my pictures, and bam ... bug .... hummmm).
I tried importing only 1 folder in my library.
I'm french and this summer, went to USA for holiday. Western deserts and all.
    So, I took my folder:
    2008 08 09 - USA Grand West
    And tried importing it.
It contains around 100 photos of the 1st 3 days of the trip.
My camera was set to French time, so at import I appreciated the "Change time thingy" and set it to Los Angeles time.
Did the import in a new project.
    Great.
All pictures in the project. Exif Date updated to los angeles time. GREAT !
    Now.
I want to have them show up on a day to day basis.
So, I created smart albums giving the date I wanted.
    August 9 2008, August 10 2008 and August 11 2008.
It DOES NOT WORK ! BUGGGGGGGG
photos taken on the 3rd day, having correct EXIF date metadata, show 11/08/2008 for the date (correct), however they are not shown in the August 11 2008 album !
They are shown in the August 12 2008 album !
    Reason !
The smart album is using the wrond date. The French one.
Since there is 11 hours difference.
Some late August 11 (Los Angeles time) pictures are pushed to August 12 (early morning French time).
Am I the only one with this bug ?
The only fix I found for now that works, is adding 3 rules to the smart albums:
    - exif: day of the month = 11
    - exif: month of the yar = 08
    - exif: year = 2008
    That works.
However there is NO WAY, i'm setting up 50gb worth of smart albums having to apply 3 specific rules to compensate for a bugged out calendar rule that does not work.
    Any ideas ? fixes ?
    Thanks
    Regards
    Tim

Hum, i'm not sure I understand what is going on, or what you are describing.
you say: "... Aperture is correct in it's assertion the image was taken on 12th"
    I dont understand.
When i've done the import, and look at that pictures metadata, the date/time is corrected. It shows up as 15:42 20080811 (youre writting).
So if the metadata is correct, I really dont understand how the computers time and timezone has any effect on the smart albums ... could you explain ?
Unless what you are suggesting, is that the smart album date is applied to the computers time zone, and thus when searching for the files, it automatically does a conversion of the time of the picture to fit the computers timezone => thus my 15:42 20080811 set to Los Angeles time zone, is researched using a French timezone and thus found on 00:42 20080812 ?
Wow, if so, this would be a stretch !
And if this is the answer, I do not understand the "feature" to import using a different time zone, and not be able to search according to it ?
    There is effectively no point?
In respect to the workaround you describe. Its effectively what I did, I sorted using 3 criterias: exif day of the month = 11, month of the year = 08, year = 2008. And for some reason that works !
Would there be another workaround? Instead of using the TimeZone panel, import them untouched, and doing a batch Time change on the pictures once imported and leaving them at the same Paris timezone, but compensating for 9 hours, effectively, bringing them to 15:42 Paris time, instead of Los Angeles time ?
If my memory is correct when having played with this, the batch time modification, did not compensate the days: Effectively, clicking 9 times on the down arrow when showing 00:42 12th did not change the 12th into an 11th ...

  • Keyword and Smart Album question

I have a keyword named "sunset"  that I use for all of my sunset pictures. In the keyword HUD it says I have 178.
I then created a smart album to display all of the sunset pics. Under the Keywords heading I have tick boxes for "sunset" and beneath it is a tick box for "sunset (time)". If I tick just "sunset"  it displays 134 items.  If I tick just "sunset (time)" it shows 219 items. If I tick both it shows 347 items.   Both contain the keyword "sunset" and there are no obvious duplicates.
Can anyone tell me what's going on?  I don't see a (anything) behind any other keywords.
Thanks in advance for your help.
    John

    John,
there is a predefined keyword "Sunset" in the "Photo Specs > Time" list of keywords.
When you added your own keyword "Sunset" you created a duplicate. Aperture distinguishes the two instances of "sunset" by adding the category "Time" to the predefined sunset, since it is defined as a subcategory of "Photo specs > Time > Sunset".
When you search in the Keywords HUD for Sunset, you should see this:
You could merge your sunset with the predefined sunset keyword, if you want to get rid of this duplicate. Or rename your keyword to my_sunset, or similar.

  • Losing Folders and Smart Albums

I have Folders in my projects that hold Smart Albums and I lose most of them next time I launch Aperture. I have done a Library rebuild but does not fix the problem. Any ideas ??

    O
I've beem having the same issue, the program simply does not keep items not stored in a project and deletes them, this is really erking me, i deleted the plist file and restarted and it still does it, everytime. lemme know if you come up with anything.

  • Calling across time zones (night and weekend minutes)

I recently moved from the eastern time zone to central time.  I'm wondering how this affects nights and weekends minutes.  If a  friend of mine (a non-verizon customer) calls me from the eastern time zone at 9:30 pm, it's only 8:30 p.m. here in central time.  So would I be charged peak minute usage?

You can always get even with them, let the call go to voicemail and return the call at 5:45 AM.

  • Why have all my previous "My Ratings" (stars) have been removed and Smart Albums(i.e. 5 star rating in past year) virtually destroyed in the update to the new Photos program?  Where are the "My Ratings" capabilities ?

Upon updating to the new Photos program, all the previous "My Ratings" (1-5 stars) for photos have been removed. Why?  My "Smart Albums" using the "My Ratings", i.e. photos with a 5 star rating within the past year, have been virtually destroyed in the update.  The updates "modified" Smart
Album deleted the "My Ratings" parameter, retained the Date parameter so now Smart Album includes every photo within the date range parameter.  Where are the "My Ratings" capabilities ?  It appears they have been removed.  If so, why ?

Photos doesn't have true star ratings.
However, when photos are migrated from iPhoto or Aperture to Photos, they will have keywords assigned, like "1 star" or "5 stars". You can create smart albums based on these keywords.
You can also assign keyboard shortcuts so if you're in the keyword pane and type 1, it will assign the "1 star" keyword.

  • My laptop iCloud calendar did not adjust to daylight savings time.  Do I need to manually move all the appointments are is there somewher I can do this.  All I found was the time zone adjustmant and that didn't help

when daylight saving time started last Sunday, my iCloud appointments on my laptop moved up one hour to 9 a.m.  They're supposed to be at 10 a.m. which is what's showing on my iPhone.  Is there an adjustment for this somewhere?  I tried the time zone adjustment, nothing there was helpful.

Please please help me, if you know how.

  • Why do I find a duplicate export of a Smart Album in my Pictures folder every time I create a MobileMe Gallery Album from that Smart Album?

Using the last version of Aperture 2, I have noticed that every time I publish a Smart Album to my MobileMe Gallery, I find a duplicate of the album in a folder  with the same name as the Smart Album in my Pictures folder.  Why does that happen?  Can I prevent that?  If I can't prevent it, can I just send the folder to the trash without it having an effect on the Smart Album in Aperture or the MobileMe Album in my Gallery?

Select the album, Select all photos in the album, then click on the info button.   Number of photos and total size are on  top of info pane.

  • Floating Time Zones messed up in Mobile Me and Published Calendars

Having researched this for 3 years, I'm sure only Apple can answer this... but it would be very reassuring to know if others are frustrated with this too!
FLOATING TIME ZONES, incredibly, are not supported when PUBLISHING and SHARING iCAL!
I travel a lot. I store my flight times and appointment times. When I'm in one time zone I frequently want to share information about my schedule with people in other time zones. ALL I want is to store and share my calendar items with the relevant time in the place they occur. SO I use Floating Time Zones. (And of course usually set my Time and Date for the place I am in)
IF someone reading this learns whether anyone CARES about this - please let us know. There is no real iCal support anywhere else except here.
I have used a Mac for 20 years and this is the first time that Apple has let me down, with no hope in sight.

OK: I am in Geneva when I make my reservation to fly from NY to Los Angeles. I enter a single event: my flight with start time in NY and end time in LA. I enter a second event - a wedding in Los Angeles.
Now I'm in Istanbul and trying to make plans with family and friends. The folks in NY just want to know what time the wedding is in L.A., not what time it will be in NY when the event happens. The folks in Geneva just want to know what time my flight arrives in NY so they can talk intelligently about what time my rendezvous in Manhattan will be....
All I want is to have the freedom to ONLY EVER see the time in the time zone of the event. I want to be free when I travel to re-set the clock to show me the time of the place I am in, without that changing ANYTHING in my calendar display.
Similarly, no one else that I share my calendar cares wants to know what time something in another time zone corresponds to in the time zone they are in at the moment.
I think it should be simple, but I can't seem to do it. I just want to enter the times that I want for the beginning and ending of an event, and for it to ALWAYS to display the time I entered and NOTHING else... on my laptop... on Mobile Me... and when I publish with iCal...
    Is it possible?

  • ICal and time zone stamps?

Apologies that this is long. It's three questions about trouble I've recently encountered using iCal.
I imported 80+ appointments into iCal from a .ics file created by Oracle Calendar.
    1. The .ics file did not contain any time zone info, and iCal associated each of the imported appointments with GMT, despite the Mac's zone set to "Denver" in the Date & Time preference pane and iCal's time zone set to "America/Denver". Why doesn't iCal associate unassigned appointments with its own time zone?
    2. Each of those appointments appeared in iCal at the correct local time, despite being associated with GMT. That is, with iCal's zone set to "America/Denver" I would have expected an item imported as, e.g., 10:00 GMT to show up at 17:00 in the iCal window. But none of them did--they all appeared as if they were MST, but with GMT stamps, and I don't understand why.
    3. I didn't actually find out these items were associated with GMT until after I synced with my Palm Tungsten E. All of the items imported as GMT were shifted 7 hours on the Palm. So I went back to iCal and for each and every one of the imported appointments I changed the time zone to "floating" and then "America/Denver". (If I went straight from GMT to MST the appointment jumped 7 hours back in time, and I got tired of this.)
After that process, every event in iCal was associated with MST. I then synced with the Palm and found that, to my surprise, the imported events still showed up on the Palm as if they were GMT, i.e., shifted forward 7 hours. I should add that I didn't merge, I told the sync conduit to erase the Palm's contents.
Back to iCal. I used "Back up Database..." and "Revert to Database backup...", then sync, telling conduit to erase Palm's contents. No change.
Back to iCal. I select one of the troublesome events, "cut" it to the clipboard, and then paste to bring it back. After a sync that one event shows up correctly on the Palm, i.e., as MST as intended.
The question at the end of a long #3 is, if an event is imported with the wrong time zone stamp, why does it retain that stamp despite being manually changed to a different time zone?
I know the knowledge base has an article on incorrect time zone stamps, and that a possible fix is to export the entire database and then import to a new calendar. I didn't find this out until recently, and it doesn't address iCal's behavior so much as provide a workaround.
    PowerMac G5 DP 2.0 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

After looking more closely at the .ics files exported by Oracle Calendar I see that events are exported as if they were GMT; iCal is, indeed, showing the appointments at the correct local time. This makes my first two questions irrelevant.
However, question #3 still remains: why or how does the original GMT stamp persist after manually setting an event's time zone to local time, "America/Denver"?

  • Time Zone issue with 7.0 and DB2

    Hi,
We are having a time zone issue with weblogic server 7.0 and DB2 database. I would really appreciate if somebody provides a solution for this issue.
Our db2 DB is located in PST time zone and weblogic server is located in EST time zone.
When we access current timestamp from db2, we are getting PST time converted to EST and EST time zone attached with timestamp value.
I tried to use resultset.getTimeStamp (1,<calendar>), unfortunately this method is not supported in the DB2 driver version I am using.
We want to get same value as returned by db2 with db2 time zone not weblogic server time zone.
And also when we add new record with timestamp column through web service, regardless the time zone value sent by web service client ".Net" ,
Weblogic server converts the java.util.Date value to weblogic time zone and stores in the db.
For example, client sent 17:00 hours CST, but when it gets stored in db through weblogic ws, weblogic converts 17:00 to 18:00 EST and stores in database as 18:00 hours without any time zone. When we read this value back, we are getting it 18:00 EST only not 17:00 CST.
This is fine as long as writing and reading by same weblogic server. If another weblogic server instance in PST time zone read this value, it takes as 18:00 PST.
Due to this our application always shows timestamp hours differently.
Could some body help me to fix this problem, we are getting this problem in production after we moved our DB2 location to different time zone.
    Thanks
    Balaji

  • Time-zone independent events and events that span timezones

    Hi.
I use Calendar rather heavily.  In fact, I have events in my calendar that date back from 1995 or so that have migrated forward from my Newton through Palms and Blackberries and now to iPhones - some migration or coexistence between the Mac and these devices was painful, to say the least.  But, I digress...
For the record, I have Time Zone Support off on my iPhone and iPad.  It's also off in Calendar on my Mac; the Mac is my 'authoritative' source of calendar (and address book) info.  When I move, it changes timezones.  For the most part, the iPhone and iPad do the right thing for events that have actual real times to them such as meetings.  If I'm supposed to be on a phone call at 7AM Seattle time, when I go to Boston, I need to be on at 10AM and it does all the devices do the right thing with those events.
But, I want to create a recurring (daily) calendar event that happens at the same local time every day, regardless of what timezone I'm in.  For example, I create such an event in Seattle for 9AM Seattle time (PT).  When I go to Boston, I want it to happen there at 9AM ET; and the same if I went to India - 9AM IST.
Any thoughts?  I live with this inconvenience for other things working quite well.
My other desire is when, for example, putting airplane trips into the calendar.  I'm in Seattle and putting in Alaska Airlines Flight 12 which departs Seattle at 9:05AM PT and arrives at 5:34PM in Boston (ET).  It would be wonderful, if for the the start and end times for event scheduling, there was a pull-down or scroll-wheel from which one could select the time zone.  Now, I have to do the calculation and do 9:05AM departure and 2:34PM arrival.  It's gets a little more difficult when one is going to places where daylight savings is not observed or if you are unfamiliar with the time differences (as when flying direct from the US to India).
    Any thoughts on this problem??

    Hey Armando Stettner,
Thanks for the question, and what a great question it is!
With time zone support on, you can edit an individual event and change the time zone for that event. This list will include options for your default time zones, UTC, and "floating" - the latter of which is what you are looking for. Floating changes the event to occur at the specified time, local time.
For information on changing an event's time zone, see the following resource:

I look forward to hearing how this works for you.
