TimeCapsule suddenly got very slow.

Strangest thing recently started happening. I have had a 500gb TimeCapsule since december, and it has worked perfectly until this week. Normally I could read/write to the internal drive or externally attached drives at about 6-10MB/s and the internet was very fast. This last week or so I can only Read or write at about 800k/s - 1MB/s. I have tried connecting it via ethernet and wireless with the same results. I also reset it to factory settings and re-set it up with the same results. I am albe to connect to the internet at decent speeds, the same as it has always been. 25mbit down and 7mbit out, so that seems fine. The only other variable is that I upgraded to Snow Leopard last week. Is there some issue with the networking perhaps? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Ryan

The same thing happened to me! (I have two 500GB Time Capsules) One is set up as the main one and one as an extender. Suddenly the transfer rate died on the second one and the first one refused to grab the dhcp information from my router. I reset both of them several times and it would not even find the main timecapsule until I MANUALLY entered the address to connect to it. Additionally, prior to resetting it the green light showing that it was connected to the router didnt even come on. Snow Leopard 10.6.1 DEFINITELY did something. The transfer rate on the second one is still pretty much unusable and I just have not had the time to mess around with it... Prior to Snow Leopard everything worked fine. I need to test this on my mac mini Leopard. I'll let ya know if that does anything...

  • My Macbook pro suddenly running very slow

I have a 13" mid 2012 Macbook pro running OS X Mavericks v 10.9.4. About two weeks ago it suddenly became very slow and unresponsive. Startup and shut down takes much longer than usual, file transfers are slow and apps are taking forever to launch. The rainbow wheel would show up almost anytime and trivial tasks like opening a new tab in browser or opening finder. More recently, a new problem has also cropped up: my mac is not going to sleep on closing the lid.
Over last two weeks I have tried the following:
    - Repair disk and disk permissions.
    - Reset SMC
    - Reset PRAM
    - Start in safe mode.
    - Clean install of OS X (after erasing the hard drive).
but none of this has helped. I also ran Apple Hardware Test but got nothing. I fear my hard drive may be failing. Is there anything else I can try before I have to take it to the apple store. Any help would be sppreciated. Thanks.
Here is some information on my macbook:
    MacBook Pro 13-inch Mid 2012
Processor  2.5 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 4000
    Software  OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Aperture suddenly becomes very slow opening library

    Hi.
I've got only 100 or so photos, and Aperture suddenly becomes very slow, it take a couple of minutes now to open the library.
Just before this started to happen, I got a very short massage, saying something like, "It's repairing some files."
I wonder if there are some corrupt files there, causing very slow opening the program.
Is there any way to check this and fix this problem?
    I'm using 3.4.3, and OS 10.8.3.
    I appreciate your help.
    Hiro

I'm surprised nobody has responded to this yet. Hopefully you have already figured it out, but if you double click on the aperture library while holding down the option and command keys, Aperture will bring up a dialog that gives you three options for dealing with potential library issues: repair permissions, repair the library or rebuild the library. You should try them in that order, and it is a good idea to back up your library first (especially before rebuilding the library).
    Hope this helps.

  • IPad 1 got very slow after installing ios5

After I have installed ios5 my iPad 1 got very slow. I press the settings button and wait for 5 seconds to appear.
    Any ideas?

First, we need to accept that the iPad will be slower under iOS5 than iOS4.  This is a standard situation, caused by each iOS upgrade being optimized for the newest iDevices – which have much faster processors.  (You should see how slow an iPhone 3G is under iOS4!)
Mine isn't dreadfully slow, but it is slower than under iOS4.  Apple's ideal solution would be to upgrade to the iPad 2; assuming that (like me) you don't want to do this, the best way to speed up the iPad is to do a soft reset.  (This has helped me in almost every situation where the iPad--or my iPhone--got very slow, or had too many crashes.)  Hold down the Home button and the Sleep button until the screen first goes black, then shows a white apple symbol.  It takes a while to finish resetting, but it clears most of the data that cause the slowdown.
To my surprise, by the way, it appears that shutting the device off (hold down the power button until the "slide to power off" bar appear, then slide) does not do as complete a job resetting the iPad as the soft reset.

  • Hi, internet on my Mac (OS10.9.1) suddenly became very slow.  Could anyone help me to figure it out the problem?  Thanks.

Hi internet on my Mac(OS10.9.1) suddenly became very slow.  Could somebody help me?  Thanks.

    Try resetting everything:
power down everything: modem, router, and computer
power up each item in turn in the same order: modem, router, and computer. Let each power up completely before moving on to the next.

My Macbook Pro purchased Dec 2011 has suddenly become very slow after not using for 2 weeks (close to frozen). What is the problem and how to solve it?

    Need Help Ye,
boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Is it still very slow?

  • My MacBook Pro suddenly became very slow, cursor responding slowely

My MacBook Pro suddenly became very slow, cursor responding slowely

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the request of a stranger on a public message board. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed: Copy a line of text from this web page into the window of another application. Wait for the script to run. It usually takes a few minutes. Then paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. Details follow.
    4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

and press return. Then paste the script again.
    9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. It is hardly Apple's fault that Epson can't/won't update their driver, but at least Epson suggest that you use the Gutenprint driver, which in any case is far better that what Epson offer.
    You can get it here:
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/
You can download the latest version from here:

Have you downloaded the recent Apple update to Epson drivers?

  • IPad one nearly 3 years old has got very slow - ideas?

My iPad will be three years old in June. In the last few weeks it has got very slow - sometimes apps take ages to respond and have to be touched several times - the same with scrolling and in fact any touch control. Even then it is slow to load things.
It is a 64 gb which is only just over half full so I don't think it is because there isn't much memory.
    Any ideas?

Try a reboot by holding both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, ignoring the red slider if it appears.
Memory overloads can cause slow down and reboot clears those.

  • System Suddenly Running Very Slow

    Hi All,
For some reason recently my iMac has started running extremely slow. Had an issue with Photoshop (my fault) and so reset Photoshop. I noticed after that working with a fairly large file in Photoshop in adding an effect when the effects window was open above the Photoshop file I was working on the text/graphics would disappear or appear to be wiped away if I moved the effects window over the open Photoshop file. Put it down to the fact that the file was large and my Mac was having difficulty with it. However since then I am now sure it's something worse. Playing a high def quicktime video with another open app causes the beach ball. Also opening Final Cut now takes ages and today a warning kept popping up saying out of memory when I was only playing an audio track in the time line with no video. Final cut windows also seem to have elements missing as what happened in Photoshop. I am running Onyx at the moment to see if it helps but I'm concerned. Permissions have been repaired a number times since then. I have also reset the Pram and SMC after this problem started. This was for another issue which is my iSight which stopped working a few months after getting my Mac. Was hoping things might change but oh well. Checked sys profiler and everything seems to be ok RAM/Hard drive etc. Even ran Tech tool to check the drive and all ok. Please help! Really worried as this is my work comp. Just a note, I'm running iStat and the CPU's don't seem to be overstrained in any way nor the temp overly high however the dual cores seem to run 1 at a time rather than sharing the load. Can't remember if that was the norm.

You may have to increase the amount of chip RAM installed in the Mac.
That is faster than VM swap temp files to/from the hard disk drive and
would be used by higher functions, in addition to the virtual memory.
Depending on the model of computer, the RAM may be upgraded to
a higher total than 4GB. There also may be a need to check/test the
computer to see what other underlying issues could cause the problem.
A 'suddenly running very slow' outside of the demands of photoshop,
could point to some other kind of problem; troubleshooting may help
locate the source. Console logs from the time interval these issues
appeared to gain predominance should be looked into.
There also may be some larger temporary files not appearing to take
up free-space; but they may be holding back memory, in caches. In
some instances, a restart into SafeBoot, and repair disk permissions
could help, then restart normally. Or just the suggested re-start...
    Good luck & happy computing!

Hi, I have updated numbers for the new version (Dec, 4th release) and the same worksheet I used to work got very slow, almost impossible to work with. I was wondering if someone else got the same issue.

Follow-up: Over the last several days, both the Apple engineers and the Microsoft have taken a detailed look. To their credit, both companies were seriously concerned and escalated this up to the engineers quickly. The problem is at least clear as in all cases both Apple and Microsoft engineers were unable to get a test spreadsheet with 12,000 rows x 40 columns, plus one row of calculations to draw a chart or do another set of calculations in a timely manner. In all cases, (10.4 vs 10.5, Excel 2004 vs 2008) pre-Intel Macs were 10-20x faster than Intel-based Macs. Of course, Apple blames Microsoft and Microsoft blames Apple. Nonetheless, both companies did ultimately conclude that neither Excel 2004 or 2008 can handle large spreadsheets on currently available Intel-based Macs. The issue is strange in that even turning off the automatic calculations (so there should be minimal use of system resources) does not speed it up. As these spreadsheets run fine in Excel 2007 on even our old 867MHz notebook PC, we'll try Parallels and or VMFusion running Excel 2007 next. If that fails, I guess we'll have to grab up used G5's.
