Timecapsule - Timemachine - Sparsebundle problem

I wanted to new install the system on my son's Macbook. It's normally hooked up to a Timecapsule for Timemachine Bachups. I cleaned the HD and installed teh system. Then i wanted to use Migration assistent to get his files back. I only saw 3 other computer Backups but not my sons. When i go into the HD from the Time Capsule directly i can see the .Sparsebundle of his back up. At first i couldn't access it but by restarting all computers and TimeCapsule i can mount the .sparsebundle image. The last thing i see is a file with no icon named with a timestamp and then 'inProgress'. I think the last back up was interrupted and now the file is 'damaged'. When i right click is can look into the package and see the files. But when i try to copy them i get a system warning saying the volume has not the right .....??? something with the big or small letters in the name o the volume.... for a back up.?????
Can somebody help we. There a some files that are important, not all.
Thanks already

Hello Pondini
Thanks for your reply. Somehow Migration Assistant does not see the older backups and 'repairing' doesn't work. Disk utility somewhere stops in the process without giving any info.
In the Disk Utility menubar, select +Window > Show Log.+ The messages should be there, with each task it's done separated by a row of asterisks. Most likely, there'll be one or more error messages, then one saying Disk Utility can't repair it.
I can get into the 'inProgress' file by looking into the package, i see the files i need, but can't copy them over because it always says 'The volume in not in the good 'capital sensitivity for a backup' (i don't know if i translate that right).
Could the message be about the backups being case-sensitive but your internal HD not being case-sensitive?
If so, that's a difficult one. I think I recall seeing a post showing a way, using Terminal, but I don't have any luck searching for it.

  • Sparsebundle problem - not showing files

    Hi,
I seem to be having a problem where  I mount my sparsebundle but when I go to view inside none of my backup shows.
This is quite annoying as on the backup is a lot of photos
Macbook pro 15-inch mid 2012 running os x yosemite

Any help? I've even moved it to an external drive and it mounts but when I click the time machine backups disk it has backups.backupd and then a folder called 'my name' Macbook Pro but inside that folder nothing is showing

  • Timemachine/restore problems... Files "Gone"

Timemachine problems... After doing a clean install on my macbook with lion and the did a full system restore from my TM BC, I dont see my files (Doc, Pic, Music, Etc) But my main drive has only 22GB left of 160GB... So I guess the files must be there somewhere, plz help

Have you tried to go to the external drive directly?
You don't really need to use Time Machine to restore, you can just go into your external drive, find the date you want to restore, and copy the files over (some permission change might be needed...)
Time Machine just makes it "easier" to restore, but a lot of times it doesn't work.
One last thing, did you run Migration Assistance yet ? this helps you copy all the settings back.

  • TimeCapsule/TimeMachine crashing the whole OS10.6.3. when starting backup

I have an absolute nightmare with my SECOND TimeCapsule (first one completely died with all its contents just promptly after first year of life and guarantee).
But as a loyal Mac-user I ignored my partners opinions and bought another hugely expensive 2TB TimeCapsule few days ago.
I now need to back up two MacBookPro's (10.6.3.).
One laptop's contents are fairly small (50GB) and this seemed to have gone smoothly.
The second has double the contents - plus I was hoping to back up an external HD of 500GB.
The first back up of data was taking absolutely forever but I left the laptop on its own for a few days. I never saw the finish but now every time I login to my laptop and the backup starts again - I get a grey layer on my screen with the text saying I have to turn the computer off and on by force pressing the on button.
Oh my god. What on Earth is going on?
I have all latest updates on all software etc.
I am rapidly loosing all hope with Mac.
    Any help appreciated!

    That's a *kernel panic.*
They are usually caused by hardware problems, but can be software.
Since this happens during TM backups, start by turning TM Off, and repairing your backups, per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
If that doesn't help, disconnect all peripherals, except keyboard and mouse. Reconnect one at a time to see if you can find the culprit.
If that's no help, one of the discs that came with your Mac should have the +Apple Hardware Test+ on it, with instructions on how to run it printed (in very tiny type) on the disc. Start by running that.

How long are you waiting for the TM to pull up the info.. over wireless in Yosemite.. it takes ages and ages and even more ages.. geological ages.. be patient.. a few hours should suffice.
This is Apple's worst OS yet.. you cannot expect speedy.

  • Sparsebundle problem

I have a 1 TB drive attached to my Airport Extreme that I use for Time Machine backups. Today I had trouble mounting the drive. I tried plugging it directly into my Macbook Pro and not through the Airport Extreme and was able to see the drive. However, I can't access my older time machine backups. When I look at the contents of drive in Finder I see a single folder called "my name's macbook pro.sparsebundle." I went into System Preferences for Time Machine and made the drive the Time Machine drive. A short backup occurred and while this backup was going on I then saw a second folder called "Time Machine Backups" which had all my backups. However, when Time Machine finished backing up the "Time Machine Backups" folder dissappeared and I'm back to the sparsebundle folder that I can't access. When I try to open the sparsebundle folder I get a message saying: "You do not have permission to open the document my name's Macbook Pro.sparsebundle. Contact you computer or network administrator for assistance."
It seems like my Time Machine backups are there but are inaccessible.
    I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

That's "iffy" and not supported by Apple. See the Using Time Machine with a USB drive connected to an Airport Extreme *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

Yes, that's correct. When doing backups to a locally-connected disk, the backups are in a normal folder named Backups.backupdb at the top level of the drive. But when they're done over a network, that folder is placed in a sparse bundle. You cannot switch from one to the other.
You should be able to access the older backups while the disk is locally-attached by manually mounting the sparse bundle (double-click it in the Finder), then using the +*Browse . . .+* option (right-click the TM icon in your Dock, or hold the Option key while pressing your mouse on the TM icon in your menubar).
But since you couldn't mount them while connected to the Airport, it sounds like the sparse bundle is corrupted. Try a +*Repair Disk+* (not permissions) on them, per #A5 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum. If DU can't repair them, there's a possibility a 3rd-party disk repair app like +Disk Warrior+ can. But there's no guarantee.

  • Problem with Time Capsule backup

My Time Capsule is a first gen (500 GB), and I recently upgraded to Lion on my iMac. It seems like right around the time I upgraded that I started having problems with Time Machine backups. They will complete, but then the disk does not eject from my desktop. I am running the Time Capsule buddy widget, and here's the log file:
    Starting standard backup
Network destination already mounted at: /Volumes/TimeCapsule

No post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups exist
    Backup completed successfully.

Waiting for Spotlight to finish indexing /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb
Stopping backup to allow backup destination disk to be unmounted or ejected.
Backup failed because the destination disk was ejected or disconnected unexpectedly!
You can see at the end where I ejected the disk manually.

I finally resolved this.  However, I had to erase the entire backup on my 3tb and start with a new backup.  I connected via hardwire to make it go faster.  No problems now.

  • TimeCapsule Error -1. Backup image "...sparsbundle" could not be accessed

Hi All, I've tried searching for an answer but no luck. I have a MacBook running SnowLeopard and it has been backing up to my TimeCapsule with no problems until I installed SnowLeopard onto my old iMac (just upgraded the RAM). Now it may be coincidence but since my iMac is now running SL my MacBook now reports the following TimeCapsule 'Error -1' code...
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/mycomputer_002500ccbc10.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1).
I should be honest and say I was copying files back and forth to the TC before i installed SL to the iMac (just in case there were problems) so I'm worried I've deleted something or corrupted this 'sparsbundle' file in some way.
Any ideas (other than resetting my TC to its original settings and starting again)?

You might be able to repair the sparse bundle. See #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • OS X v10.7, iCal and iCloud - sync problems

BLUF: After installing OS X v.10.7, iCal will not accept my iCloud password and thus will not sync/update my calander events on the laptop to my other devices or to the cloud.  Sync-ing is fine between other devices and the cloud, so the Cloud isn't the problem.
Details: I recently allowed Lion to install it's most current update.  At the conclusion of the install, it rebooted and gave me the option to install a new version of Lion or to recover from TimeCapsule/TimeMachine.  I assume the update failed for some reason, and it was unable to reboot as planned, but it did not give me any indication of the problem nor did it provide any error messages.  I allowed it to install a new version of Lion.  Unfortunately, not a good start to an OS update.
The reinstall seemed to be ok except that it reset/changed some of my settings for mail accounts and now iCal will not log into iCloud.  I have entered the correct iCloud password and it keeps coming  back with the same dialog box saying the password is wrong and to re-enter.  I have verified both the account name and password by logging into iCloud directly which works fine.  New items place on the calendar are never synced to the cloud or to other devices, however, sincing from other devices to the cloud and back is not a problem.
Any help or suggestions appreciated.  Thanks.

Problem has been solved - for those who possibly have the same problem, I will note what I did.  The trouble-shooting guide mentioned disabling/re-enabling iCloud calendars in iCal through the System Preferences.  I noticed when I attempted to do this that iCloud wasn't there anymore.  Apparently the reinstall of Lion (after the failed upgrade from 10.7.2 to 10.7.4) required me to re-reinstall (install?) the 10.7.4 upgrade.  Once this was done, the iCal connected properly to iCloud and is syncing.
I have also now started the download on MountainLion - hopefully this is an enhancement instead of a source of new problems.

  • TimeCapsule won't let me type password for "delete all backups of..."

I've been using this TimeCapsule/TimeMachine for a couple years. I'm trying to open up some space. So I just excluded a couple folders from being backed up. Now I'd like to dump the old backups of those folders. So I go into TimeMachine, go to latest backup (not "Now/Today"), click on folder, hit "Delete all backups of..." from the action/gear menu, and it warns me that it can't be undone. Then it prompts me for admin name/password, but it won't let my type in the password!
It will let me hit the OK button (at which point it says it's a bad password), or hit the Cancel button to cancel, but it won't let me type anything. (Not into the Name field either, though that doesn't matter since it's prefilled with the correct name.)

See #E4 of Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Mixing Time Machine backups and other data on a TC's internal HD usually leads to problems, as you've seen. See #Q3 in  Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details and some possible workarounds.

  • Two users in the same Mac accessing one TimeCapsule

    Hi,
How can i make two user accounts in the same Mac access simultaneously the same TimeCapsule?
I've tried setting them to use accounts to connect to TimeCapsule as well as using a single password for TimeCapsule.
But i keep having the same problem. When one user accesses the time capsule the other gets ejected or the TimeCapsule folder appears with a forbidden sign.
What do i have to do?
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance

I think i understand what is happening.
Leopard mounts the TimeCapsule disk using mount_afp command and any disk mounted with mount_afp will automatically have as owner <user>:staff and read and write permissions only to the owner. All other users have access denied.
(If anyone knows how to change the default permissions of mount_afp please reply!)
If like me, you have two user accounts in the same Mac (lets say user1 and user2) and use fast user switching a lot like i do, since it is a family computer, you'll have serious problems since what happens is the following:
    1. Mount the Timecapsule in user1.
    2. Fast user switching to user2.
    3. The TimeCapsule will appear unmounted in user2
    4. Mount the TimeCapsule in user2.
    5. List the /Volumes folder and you'll see something like this
    drwx------ user1:staff /TimeCapsule
    drwx------ user2:staff /TimeCapsule-1
No problem... I can live with having two mounts for the same network disk.
    The problem is the following...
    6. Fast user switch to user1 again.
    7. Open a finder window
    8. On the left the TimeCapsule is listed as a network drive (as expected) and is shows as mounted!
However... The association has changed and once i click the TimeCapsule icon in the sidebar it now points to /Volumes/TimeCapsule-1 and therefore user1 has permission denied.
    9. I opened a terminal window with user1 and went to /Volumes/TimeCapsule and everything was ok!.
So the conclusion is... the finder window sidebar TimeCapsule is pointing to a Volume it shouldn't be...
How is it possible to correct this situation???
Please help! I just want a way to have two users on the same machine using the same time capsule at the same time.
    Thanks!

  • Fix for Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse Freeze problem.

After deleting the following file: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
And re-pairing my Apple Bluetooth keyboard and mouse all of my freezing problems have been resolved.

    For what it's worth...
I have read a bunch of different threads on this. So far I have:
    - downgraded my TimeCapsule (still had problems)
    - Upgraded to 10.5.7 (still had problems)
    - made both the bluetooth keyboard and might mouse "favorites" per http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1907901&tstart=30
    - disabled bluetooth in the network panel
...and left an old PC mouse connected to a USB port.
The add as favorites / disable in network panel I have done fairly recently and - so far - no problems.

  • Fix for bluetooth connection connectivity problems...

    Hi,
I have had problems connecting my bluetooth for both my nokia's 6300 & 6500 classic to each other, my car and any other device. After just sitting there and searching i found this is the best way:
    1. Turn on bluetooth
    2. Make sure your phone is visible to all
    3. Instead of clicking on search audio enhancements go to Paired Devices and either select New or if you have already got any paired devices click Options on one of them and click Pair new device and a search will begin. The device you want to connect to should now be found.
    Hope it works

  • Airport Utility doesn't detect my TimeCapsule

Airport Utility can't detect my TimeCapsule over wlan on my laptop. I have tried resetting the unit and have applied all updates (firmware and software). Strange thing (at least to me) is that the laptop connects to internet through TimeCapsule normally.
Not being able to connect to Airprt Utility is not a real problem for me, since my desktop PC detects the TimeCapsule without any problems over ethernet. The real problem is the fact that my laptop can't find the printer that's hooked up to TimeCapsule can't be detected by Bonjour. Desktop again has no probelms with the printer.
Does anybody have any clue wether the problem is with the laptop or TimeCapsule? Sometimes I have gotten the Airport Utility to find TimeCapule on the laptop and then the printer worked too, but most of the time it doesn't work.
    Thanks

On the Laptop, go into System Preferences, then into Network. Make sure Airport is selected on the left and click the "Advanced" button on the . . . Wait.
I just noticed you're on Vista. It might help if you provided a little more info on how you have the laptop configured to access your network. In Mac OS, sometimes the desired network is not actually the one that is taking priority. As a result you need to go in and move it to the top of the list of detected networks and delete any that you never intend to connect to (like a neighbors network). Your laptop might not know which network you're trying to connect to.
