Timecapsule uses a lot of space

Hello, hope someone can help.
I use timecapsule1T to backup my system. The problem is it's using a lot of space. All 1T is used. Why is it using so much?

How large a drive are you backing up? TM is an archiving utility which means every backup uses more hard drive space. Given enough time and data the drive will eventually fill up.
About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive.

Check for 'others' in iTunes against your iPhone.
Restore from a previous backup to reclaim some of it.
Still want more, Restore in iTunes, setup as New.

  • Time Machine is using a lot of space

My TM says there is only 255 Gb available on my 465 GB (500 GB) external USB HDD (210 GB used). My Finder says my internal HDD has 464 GB available out of 596 GB (132 GB used). I only started using it a few days ago and the used space seems to be growing fast. Why is TM using so much more space and what happens when it runs out?

    I'm having the same problem.
I have a 320GB internal hard drive and a 320GB external. Until recently, the "free" space on my external was very similar to the free space on my main drive (about 50% full). But then in the last few weeks, suddenly my external is almost full.
All I've done in the last few weeks is add a bunch of music to my iTunes, but that was only 5-10GB of space. I find it strange that Time Machine is using so much more space, even though it does have all the incremental backups.
    2 questions:
    1) Anyone know why it might be using so much more space?
    2) Is the 'rule of thumb' that an external drive should be bigger than the internal one, because of all the incremental backups?

  • CLOB uses a lot of space in the segment

    Hello,
I try the LOB features, specially the SecureFile option in my database 11gR1.
In a PL/SQL procedure, I use one CLOB variable and put a lot of information in it (with loops). After treatment, I insert the CLOB variable in a table TEST with CLOB column.
There is only 1 row in my table !
    All is fine.
The table TEST is created with securefile option. Here is the DDL:
    create table sh1.test(id number,text clob)
    LOB(text) STORE AS SECUREFILE(CACHE LOGGING);
Later, I check the space used by the LOB segment of my table and I'm very surprised.
I check also the length of my CLOB and I compare with the space used.... It seems to me that the space used is TO BIG for the length of the CLOB...
Commands I used for the space used and the length ! I
    select bytes/1024/1024 from dba_segments where segment_name='SYS_LOB0000077271C00002$$';
    select dbms_lob.getlength(text) from sch1.test;
Here are my measures results with length of the clob in comparison with the space it uses:
    Length of the clob : 84306     748884     2234809     5291295     15211012
    Space used [Mb] : 1.3125     74.3125     320.4375     1074.375     6924.4375 !!!!!!
What do you think of these results ?
Is it normal ? I hope not...
I tried to create the table in basicfile mode... The space used is not so different as securefile...
In my PL/SQL code, I tried different ways to append data to my CLOB.
    - Concatenation ||
    - dbms_lob.append
    - dbms_lob.writeappend
    There is no difference.
    Any idea ?
    Thanks a lot in advance,
    Regards,
    Yann

    Sybrand,
Thank you for your response and I apologize if my post wasn't clear enough.
You're guru, I'm not. If you need more information to help me, I provide them, no problem.
Indeed, you cannot verify the segment name, here is the request I executed to get it...
    select table_name, column_name, segment_name, tablespace_name from dba_lobs where owner='SH1' and table_name='TEST'
    TABLE_NAME COLUMN_NAME SEGMENT_NAME TABLESPACE_NAME
    TEST TEXT SYS_LOB0000077271C00002$$ TS_DATA_TEST
I generate the DDL of my table:
CREATE TABLE "SH1"."TEST" ( "ID" NUMBER, "TEXT" CLOB)
    TABLESPACE "TS_DATA_TEST" PCTFREE 10 INITRANS 1 MAXTRANS 255 STORAGE ( INITIAL 64K BUFFER_POOL DEFAULT)
LOGGING NOCOMPRESS LOB ("TEXT") STORE AS SECUREFILE (
    TABLESPACE "TS_DATA_TEST" RETENTION AUTO KEEP_DUPLICATES
    NOCOMPRESS STORAGE ( INITIAL 104K BUFFER_POOL DEFAULT) );
    Do you need other information?
I don't specify anything for outline or inline storage.
I read that the lob is stored outline if the lob is greater than approximatively 4000 bytes.
Do you advice that I specify DISABLE STORAGE IN ROW in my table creation ?
LOB is stored in the same tablespace as the table segment. I know that it's not the best practice, but it was just a test.
    Here is the DDL:
    CREATE SMALLFILE TABLESPACE "TS_DATA_TEST"
    DATAFILE 'dbfilename1' SIZE 4096M REUSE , 'dbfilename2' SIZE 1842048K REUSE
AUTOEXTEND ON NEXT 10240K MAXSIZE 16384M LOGGING
    EXTENT MANAGEMENT LOCAL
    SEGMENT SPACE MANAGEMENT AUTO DEFAULT NOCOMPRESS;
What do you mean by "amount of redundant tags" ? It seems to me I specified what my post is talking about...
    Thank you for your help.
    Regards,
    Yann

  • App is using a lot of space on my computer

I installed the app on my macbook air and set the app to not save to the computer.  My pictures are stored on an external hard drive.  The Adobe Revel Library folder in my pictures folder is taking up a lot of storage. How much storage should the folder use if I'm asking it to not save to the computer? What happens if I delete that foldera?

    Hello Elizabeth
When you use Revel on iOS and MAC and open a library for the first time we cache the thumbnails for the image thumbnails you are viewing. We download loupe previews and originals for editing on demand and only cache them as you view them. On MAC we take an additional step and cache the originals for the library. (This original downloading is not done on iOS) . If you upload 100 mb of images you will need the equal amount of 100mb of free space on the mac. If you delete the folder then you are deleting cached thumbnails and originals.

  • Pictures using a lot of space

    Guys, I need some help!
I was checking the space at my Macbook Air and then I saw that I am using 13 GB of pictures.
I am pretty sure that I don't use all this space for pictures but I can't find where this space come from!
I cleaned already the trash from iPhoto 9.6 but I still use this space.
    Thanks for the help

When you empty trash from iPhoto, you must still empty Trash in order to free up space on the SSD.
What is the source of the information?  Is it from 'About This Mac'?  If so, reindex Spotlight:
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201716
That might correct the various category sizes.
    Ciao.

  • --Ext3 using a lot more space than XFS?

    Hi,
although this question is related to my fileserver I put it in this forum as it's not related to networking in any way, I hope it fits.
So, I have a fileserver mostly acting as NAS. The main volume consits of 250GB+500GB as one LVM group. I have a second group of the same size for backup. I use rsync for backups, and both volumes contain exactly the same data, only difference is: main volume is formatted with XFS, backup volume is using Ext3 with journal=data.
    df -h:
Dateisystem Größe Benut Verf Ben% Eingehängt auf
    /dev/mapper/data-fileserver
    699G 605G 94G 87% /mnt/fileserver
    /dev/mapper/data--backup-fileserver
    679G 606G 39G 95% /mnt/backup
I double checked both filesystems contain the same data, still there is a difference of 55 gigabytes in free space. How come?

Well mostly. I set it to 1% the numbers looked good and I thought it'd be okay, however after setting the reserved space to 0% I still missed 19GB. On a closer look we can see that the Ext3 filesystem is around 20GB smaller than the XFS one, and I can't really understand that:
    [root@dude ~]# tune2fs -m 0 /dev/data-backup/fileserver
    tune2fs 1.40.3 (05-Dec-2007)
Setze Verhältnis der reservierten Blöcke auf 0% (0 blocks)
    [root@dude ~]# df -h
Dateisystem Größe Benut Verf Ben% Eingehängt auf
    /dev/mapper/data-fileserver
    699G 607G 93G 87% /mnt/fileserver
    /dev/mapper/data--backup-fileserver
    679G 606G 74G 90% /mnt/backup
Both LVM groups have the same size:
    [root@dude ~]# lvm lvscan
    ACTIVE '/dev/data-backup/fileserver' [689,64 GB] inherit
    ACTIVE '/dev/data/fileserver' [698,64 GB] inherit
    And
    [root@dude ~]# tune2fs -l /dev/data-backup/fileserver
    tune2fs 1.40.3 (05-Dec-2007)
    Block count: 180785152
Since I haven't changed the standard block size of 4K this means we have 723140608 K of data, or 706192 MB or 689,64 GB which is exactly the size of the volumes. So still I wonder what happended to 19GB of space

  • System Update Repository - Using a lot of disk space

    Hi
Looking at the Repository - it seems to be using a lot of space with multiple iterations of similar files
It also appears to be keeping large Setup files as well as the Applications.
    Are all these necessary?
Is there anyway to remove them?  CAN I delete old files/setup files?  (do you need the old version if a new application is present and functioning)
    Many thanks

What version of System Update are you running? The bloating of the repositiory was corrected with SU v5, which also redesigned the internals of SU. A side affect is that when V5 is installed, all installation history is lost (from old SU v4). Uninstall your current SU, Reply when YES you see the screen below during uninstall .  Install latest SU 5.006.16.

  • Lot of space in pdf when generate using iText

I am generating PDF from html content. for this i have used HTMLWorker. The code is like this
    ArrayList list=HTMLWorker.parseToList(new StringReader(sb.toString()),style);
    for(int i=0;i<list.size();i++)
    document.add((Element)list.get(i));
where document is object of Document.
My generated PDF is fine, the only problem is if the content is too much, lot of space comes in PDF. It is like 1 page with content, next page with only header and then all space, then again the next with content, in random order.
    please help.

Why don't you look for a mailing list and/or forum of the iText folks? They can probably help you a lot more than we can.

  • Will "more space" option on the 15in rMBP use a lot of system resources?

    Hey guys,
Looking to find out if having the most space option selected will use a lot of my avail ram(8GB) and/or dain my battery quickly as opposed to the best for retina option. I'm also wondering if would be dramatic or just slight difference. I won't be doing any heavy lifting at this option either.
    Thanks for any help!

I also noticed that when closing itunes that the itunes.exe process doesn't always close down and has to be shut down manually.
    hi CoJeff!
hmmmm. let's try an experiment. next time, prior to closing down itunes, try disabling your antivirus and antispyware first. do you get a better shutdown by your itunes.exe?
i've been seeing a few weird problems lately associated with antivirus and other security applications (apparently) interfering with reading and writing the itunes library files. in some cases it's caused slow shutdowns. in other cases, people have been getting weird "unknown error" codes. in one case it was a (-223):
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=305996&messageID=825155
i've seen a (-1450) a few times (one time apparently associated with over-enthusiastic script blocking, one time with a loose cable).
in one case, a really atypical (39):
    http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=306070&messageID=801277
i've suspected that something like this might be causing some of the anomalous (-50)s (not the Music Store or contacts-synching varieties) that show up in contexts where the library is being read/written too.
i haven't really got a handle yet on pecise causes and treatments, but it's something i'm starting to check for on a more-and-more regular basis ...
    love, b

  • I can't install Snow leopard on my hard disk which has 10.4.11 on and lots of space.

I can't install Snow leopard on my hard disk which has 10.4.11 on it and lots of space, I run the snow Leopard install disk and it says it cant be installed on my hard disk, which has 160 GB of space.

Which iMac? If it's a G5, the highest OS you can run is Leopard. Are you using the full retail copy of Snow, or a grey, machine specific disc from another computer? If it's the latter, that's the reason.

  • What is using my hard drive space on my macbook pro

Something is using all my hard drive space and I cannot figure out what.  Yesterday I had 120GB and now I have 120MB free and got a disk warning.  I have noticed this past week that my space has been eaten up.  My Mac Book Pro is 2 months old and I have not put any big or fancy programmes on it as I am still getting used to this being my first Mac.  One of the selling points for getting a Mac is I heard its programmes took a lot less space.  My previous PC that I had for 2 years had a 130GB hard drive and I had 20GB free when I gave it away.  I cannot believe I have used all my 500GB hard drive space when I have only installed a few programmes on this one such as Notebook, Pages, and some accounting software.  I cannot seem to find details of where the space is being used.  Please help.

  • How do I find what's using my hard drive space

My wife has a 14" iBook. How do I find what's using all the hard-drive space? It only has a 40GB hard-drive (it's one of the older G3 models) but there isn't a lot loaded onto the HD. There is only 3GB space left. I've gone through every application and utility and document and every folder (document, movie, etc.) and the largest space-hogging folder is iTunes which uses 15GB because of the music. I can't find any singular folder that uses any sizeable HD space. I recently loaded Tiger so I don't know if Tiger uses the rest of the space or if it's just a combo of all the other applications.

You could download and use WhatSize to see what may be eating up the space.
With a 40 GB hard drive, you need to keep at least 6 GB free in order to avoid problems.

why is my ipod so slow and laggy? i have lots of space on it, my history is deleted, i dont have multiple apps running! I have an iPod 4th Gen for about 2 years now and I don't know what to do.... Please help

Periodically double click the home button and close all the apps in the recently used dock. Then power off and then back on the iPod. This frees up memory. The 4G only has 256 MB of memory.
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Installation Directory BO/InstallData/InstallCache/ needs a lot of space

    HI together,
maybe someone of you know a solution?
We have installed a BO4.0 Enterprise Server, and we installed a lot of patches since now.
The installation directory (BO/InstallData/InstallCache/) needs now a lot of space.
Is it possible to reorganise this directory or is it possible to delete some files?
    Thanks in advance
    David

    Hi David Bartuli,
Run Disk Cleanup you will get some space.
Right click the drive Select Properties. Click Disk Cleanup....
If you want to reduce the number of unnecessary files on your hard disk to free up disk space and help your computer run faster, use Disk Cleanup. It removes temporary files, empties the Recycle Bin, and removes a variety of system files and other items that you no longer need.
