TimeCapsule WiFi

I have verizon fios wireless modem and a time capsule airport. My iphone will sync to the verizon wifi, but not to the timecapsule, which is preferred. My iMac connects beautifully to the timecapsule airport wireless. Any thoughts?

You are brilliant. I had it on N only. Switched to n w/bg compatibility and connected just fine. Thank you.

  • TimeCapsule Wifi unstable (when on a non-Mac devices)

I have a TimeCapsule and I connect many devices to Wifi: --> iMac,Windows Vista PC, Samsung Galaxy Tab with Android, Iphones, etc..
I am having wifi crashes mainly when connected on a Vista PC or Android Tablet. Suddenly the internet crashes and I need to reconnect manually. When streaming online content (video from Youtube or audio from interent radios) fron non-MAc the crash will happen at some point (sometimes earlier, sometimes later)....but this is not limited to content streaming as it also happens when surfing the web.
I noticed that the wifi network disappears from the list for a while, as if AirPort restarts. I need then to reconnect manually.
Whern on a Mac device, this seems not to be a problem and I do not experience crashes....
I upgraded firmware to the latest version, but nothing changed.
Does anyone know this issue and the reason why and how to solve it?
Unfortunately my experience with Mac products is that if you remain within the "Mac world" using Mac products, your are good to go, however compatibility with other brands is an issue, and this is a great inconvenience when we talk about an Air Port!...
Thanks a lot for any advvice as I tried everything to solve this and this forum is my last hope.

Different products use different wireless chipsets.. even apple have used different wireless cards in each Generation of the TC and each update of the computers they build. But at least Apple only works with a small range of hardware and can sort out the drivers. Drivers can and usually are the problem, although some wireless chipsets really just don't work well together.. you will notice this on any brand.. to brand difference. Wireless is voodoo still .. it is about 50% science and 80% black arts. (in voodoo you don't need to add up to 100%).
Vista .. shudder.. was built with known issues in the wireless management that were never fixed. Upgrade that computer to XP.. or win7. Vista is just a dog. it will be faster and more stable. Replace the wireless card to match the TC.
Some of the earlier Andoid also are known to have issues.. check if there is firmware update or anything available to help. Android had a really nasty bug. Cannot remember much about it now.. so google.
I would suggest you at least make the wireless have some hope of working.
You will need to do the following.
    1. Use SMB names not Apple type naming. SMB is short, no spaces, pure alphanumeric. Apple uses spaces and particularly apostrophe.. don't. That applies to all names in the TC, so change the TC name and wireless name.. give a different name to 5ghz.
    2. Use WPA2 Personal (AES) security. Use a passkey of 8-12 characters same rules as above.
    3. Lock the radio channels. TC is set to auto by default and will wander channels to find most clear.. the wandering is a problem.
    4. You might need to either lock IP via dhcp reservation or manually set IP on the device.. Often issues involve address failing and constant reconnections. It will eventually fill the table.
    5. You must use 5.6 utility on the Mac so you can check the log of the TC and actually see the wireless clients.
    6. Do not expect vista to get any better.. but at least download the latest driver for the exact wireless card used from the wireless manufacturer.
If none of this works.. use the lateral thinking approach..
Get a cheap TP-Link, edimax etc wireless router. Use it in AP mode.. and plug it into the TC. Use a different name and wireless channel to the TC. Use that for your non-apple products.. it costs $30 or so for N-lite which is all you need. Simple easy effective. That doesn't mean that vista will ever work of course.. vista is fundamentally flawed. Nor can I guarantee early android.. but at least it will be right kind of product.

  • TimeCapsule - Wifi Iphone4, IPad2 and HP Printer 7510 problems

    Time Capsule Issues
    -------- Symptom :
    - HP Printer 7510 or IPhone4 cannot connect on the WIfi,
    - iPad2 experiments network connection breakouts requiring sometimes a network reinitialization.
At the same time, on the same network, an iMac, 2x MacBookPro, an IPad3 and a Sony Bravia TV do not experiment any kind of Wifi network connection problem.
All network connection problems disappear as soon as I replace my TimeCapsule by my old D-Link Dir-635 router, and do directly reappear as soon as I put my TimeCapsule back.
-------- What has been already tried out ?
    - IPhone4
A complete reinstallation from scratch does not change the problem. I cannot connect on my Wifi network through my TimeCapsule.
Important Note : Replacing my TimeCapsule by my old D-Link Dir-635 router does solve the problem as my IPhone4 can connect without any problem.
    - HP Printer 7510
A complete factory reinitialization through hidden user menu did not change the problem.
A network without security setting did not change the problem.
Changing settings from WPA/WPA 2 to WPA2 Personal did not change the problem.
Note: The HP printer has been taken back by AppleStore and I will be reimbursed as it didn't worked
Important Note: Replacing my TimeCapsule by my old D-Link Dir-635 router does solve the problem as my HP Printer can connect without any problem.
    - IPad2 vs IPad3
The IPad2 could not connect on TimeCapsule without going first through a network reinitialization.
From now on, I see connection interruptions from my IPad2 while not on my IPad3
I noticed this by listening to the same Internet radio on both IPad at the same time.
The stream on the IPad3 does not suffer from any network connection breakouts, while at the same time my IPad2 does.
Sometimes it comes back on the IPad2 without doing anything. Sometimes I need to go through a network reinitialization through the General - Reinitialization menu to connect back to my TimeCapsule.
Important Note : Replacing my TimeCapsule by my old D-Link Dir-635 router does solve the problem as my IPad2 can connect without any problem and without any connection breakouts.
    -------- Configuration information :

    Marc

After reading other people discussions in here, it seems the latest TimeCapsule software 7.6.1 could be the problem. Many people suggest to downgrade to 7.5.2
I would like to give a try but not being an expert in Apple at all (I'm a simple dummy user), it would be kind to receive a help on how to do so.
    - Where to find the software ? (I dont have any CD, not used of the terms Lion, ...)
    - How to install it on my new TimeCapsule ?
    - Will the old software version run with the latest TimeCapsule hardware ?
I'm willing to give a try and post the results in here to see if my current problems dissappear. If so, I will then purchase back the HP printer and give another try and keep this community informed.
    Thanks in advance
    Marc

  • Share the Timecapsule WIFI

I have a MAC book pro with USB internet connection, can this be shared with my Timecapsule & create a WIFI connection ?

You can try sharing the connection to the ethernet port.. use that as wan to the TC.. and then use the TC for wifi to other clients.. that could work ok.. but 3G routers are not that expensive and much easier to handle. you can just plug the TC into it in bridge.

  • TimeCapsule WiFi is toooooooo slow...

    Hi there,
I have a problem and have no idea to solve it...
I have an optical cable connection, the TimeCapsule connected to the hag and have an iMac connected to the TimeCapsule by cable and there the net works good!
Then I have my MacBook connected by wifi to the base.
Everythings orks good until one week ago.
Now i have the timecapsule that doesn't work as wifi... The wifi is to slow that I need 2 or 3 minutes to charge a page...
Somewhere i read that i can set “Interference Robustness”, but if i set it TimeCapsule disappears from my net and from Utility AirPort.
I have try to explane me in my english =P and hope you can help me

Consider these factors regarding slow network speed:
    *Transmit Power & Wide Channels*
If you are using the 802.11n only (5 GHz) radio mode, you can also select to use wide channels, which provide higher data throughput in your network.
    Launch Airport Utility
Select your Time Capsule on the left.
    Click “Manual Setup”.
    Select “Airport” in the toolbar.
    Click the “Wireless” tab.
Click “Wireless Options...” at the bottom of the window.
Adjust the “Transmit Power” to 100%.
Put a check mark in the box labeled “Use Wide Channels”.
    Click “Done”.
Click “Update” in the lower right hand corner.
Wait for the Time Capsule to restart and then see if your network speeds improve.
    *Anti-Virus Software*
Are you running anti-virus software. Disable it and see if network speeds improve. The discussion boards are filled with users who are experiencing degraded network speeds due to their anti-virus software.
One poster observed: “I had the exact same problem 5mins ago, it had taken 2 hours to back up 2GB, I realized I installed Sophos anti virus a couple of days ago. When I turned that off my back up is speeding through.”
Another contributor stated, “I am doing the first backup to my time capsule, about 71 Gb, It seems to be going about 1 Gb per hour. is this seem OK? I tried the ethernet connection and the speed was about the same. It has been going all night and after 12 hours it is at only 12 Gb of 71….I found the problem, I uninstalled Norton and the problem went away. It backed up in about 3 or 4 hours”
    *Wireless Security Issue*
Some who have experienced degraded network speeds have isolated the problem to their wireless security setup. Try this:
    Launch Airport Utility
Select your Time Capsule on the left.
    Click “Manual Setup”.
    Select “Airport” in the toolbar.
    Click the “Wireless” tab.
    Change “Wireless Security” to “None”.
Click “Update” in the lower right hand corner.
Wait for the Time Capsule to restart and then see if your network speeds improve.
Granted, this is far from desirable. But it does help to isolate the problem in you instance.
Let us know if any of these procedures helped.
    Cheers!

  • MacBookPro doesn't see TimeCapsule WiFi network after un-hibernating

    Hi everyone,
I'm seeing a strange issue in that, after resuming from 'deep sleep' (hibernate), my MacBook Pro 2,2 can't see my preferred wireless network. I get the dialog saying 'none of your preferred networks are available', which sometimes lists my preferred network (huh?), but the AirPort menu item always lists my preferred network.
Does anyone else get this? It's driving me nuts.
Additional Info: Wifi is WPA2 provided by TimeCapsule. MacBooks and iPhones work fine.

    If not:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    Then
Does the iOS device connect to other networks?
Does the iOS device see the network?
    Any error messages?
    Do other devices now connect?
Did the iOS device connect before?
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on your router
.- Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

  • Ipad2 to timecapsule wifi toggles continuously

    Hi -
    I have the following setup:
Belkin router (set according to IOS recommendation (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4199))
connected by ethernet cable to timecapsule.
Belkin wireless router (called Router1) in one side of my house, timecapsule in the outer (Router2)
I can connect all my devices (Ipad2, Iphone, IMac, Airbook) to Router1 flawlessly (the Belkin, when i am in reach of the signal).
My Airbook connects without a problem to the Router2 (Timecapsule) when in reach.
The Ipad2 and Iphone "see" Router2 when in reach, and they connect - but only for a very short time, then disconnect, then reconnect etc.
So they toggle continuously but don't "hold" the connection.
Does anyone have a clue what to do?
    Thanks!

BTW - If I switch off Router1's wireless mode, than no issue.. So it looks like a conflict somewhere... Help much appreciated !!

  • Flaky imac to timecapsule wifi but printer OK

We have a new (purchased Sept 22) iMac and time capsule. The wifi connection
between the iMac and the TC (which is our router as well connected to a cable
modem) is flaky. A Linux machine connected to the TC by ethernet always connects
to the internet just fine, and can print to a wifi printer via the TC just fine,
but often the iMac seems to "connect" to the TC, but nothing really happens --
mail times out, browsers time out or run extremely slowly. Sometimes this can be
fixed by turning airport off on the iMac and then back on. Today it was really
bad, and Airport Utility couldn't even find any wireless devices, even with
reboots of the iMac and the TC. So I connected an ethernet cable for the iMac,
even though I prefer the wifi, and suddenly both connections are up (ethernet
and wifi). This is extremely frustrating. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I did find something funny in the Time Capsule log of this mornings weirdness:

*_Time Capsule Weak Signal Strength / Dropped Connections_*
Forgive the size of the post, but the suggestions below have helped others with similar issues. Try each topic individually and see if things improve, If not move on to the next one.
    *Keep the Time Capsule Cool*
Some posters have observed that when they positioned the Time Capsule for better ventilation and cooling, their network connectivity issues resolved themselves. Also avoid locating the devise within poorly ventilated cabinets or piling items around or on top of it.
    *Time Capsule Orientation*
While the location you chose to setup your Time Capsule may be acceptable, but the direction it is oriented can have an effect on signal strength. It appears that the signal of the Time Capsule does not radiate equally from all sides of the devise.
The antennas within the devise are positioned along the 3 smooth sides. That is, there is no antenna on the side bearing the ports and cables. As a result, position the devise with the ports and cables AWAY from the direction of most of the clients that will be connecting to it.
    *Cordless Phones*
Some users have discovered that the cordless phones they have in the home occupy or are near the same bandwidth as their wireless network (2.4Ghz or 5Ghz). Try temporarily disabling the handsets and their bases and see if network connectivity improves. If so you may need to change the channel that the phone uses or purchase phones that occupy a different bandwidth.
    *Proximity To Other Devices*
One poster observed: “Finally have full access, full speed, and full functionality. Initially I installed the Time Capsule at the location of my cable, cable modem... which of course was next to my HDTV, DVD, Apple TV, Amplifier, etc. Get the picture? After about 4 weeks of starts and stops, resets and repeated initial backups, I moved the unit to another location, closer to my Mac, and in an area where there are no other electronics. Now, it runs perfect.” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1734818&tstart=0]
    *Change Firewall Settings* #
Go to System Preferences --> Security.
    Click the Firewall tab.
Change setting to “Set access for specific services and applications”.
The System will now ask you when each process wants to penetrate the firewall. Once you click “Allow” each time you are asked, it will be saved in the pane at the bottom of this window and it should never ask you again.
One poster observed, “Since I made this change, my wireless has been strong and Time Machine works like a champ and the impact on my network performance is minimal. I speculate that the change in performance is due to security protocols or services that run in the 'allow all incoming connections' and 'allow only essential services' modes. Whatever the reason this fix has worked for me for over 2 months without resetting my airport connection or time capsule.” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8348496#8348496]
    *Change Time Capsules’ Channel*
    Launch Airport Utility.
Select the device on the left.
    Click "Manual Setup."
    Select “Airport” in the toolbar.
    Click the "Wireless" tab.
If “Channel” is set to “Automatic” try changing to a different one. Holding the Option key down and clicking the drop-down menu should provide more channels to choose from. If you have another wireless router operating, ensure that each devices’ channels are as far apart as possible.
    Click “Update”.
    Close Airport Utility.
    *Preferred Networks & Airport Services*
You may be experiencing interference from other networks in your neighborhood. When you click the Airport menu are there other networks listed other than your own?
If so, is your network at the top of the list? It should be.
Go to System Preferences --> Network --> Select Airport on the left.
Click "Advanced". In the “Airport” tab note the various local wireless networks that Airport detects. Is the network you prefer to connect to at the top of the list? If not drag it to the top. Are there other networks you never intend to connect to (an old work network, or a neighbors network)? Then highlight them and click the "-" button.
Make sure “Remember any network this computer has joined” is checked.
    Click "OK".
For "Network Name" be sure your network is selected and then click "Apply".
Is Airport (wireless) your primary means of connecting to your network? If so, is Airport at the top of the list of services on the left? It should be.
Click the small “Gear” button at the bottom of the window and select “Set Service Order”.
Now drag Airport to the top of the list.
    Click “OK”. Click “Apply”.
Now see if network connectivity has improved.
    *Transmit Power & Wide Channels*
If you are using the 802.11n only (5GHz) radio mode, you can also select to use wide channels, which provide higher data throughput in your network.
(If you are using a 802.11a/b/g (2.4GHz) radio mode then select “Interference Robustness”)
    Click “Done”.
Click “Update” in the lower right hand corner.
Wait for the Time Capsule to restart and then see if your network speeds improve.
Let us know if any of the above helped improve your situation.
    Cheers!

  • TimeCapsule WiFi crashed?

    Hi,
I've a problem with TC... first 10 days it worked perfectly and the first backup was executed correctly via wifi (90 Gbyte).
Since 3 day, all my Macs (MacBook & iMac) not recognize it in first istance. Then I turn off / on TC and at this point I can recognize TC without problems, however, when one of 2 Mac connect to TC for TM backup, at 90% of cases (if backup is big) the backup does not finish because TC back to not recognize mode.
    Anyone have idea?
Some problem I've with one AirportExpress in network extended mode. Without any reason becomes not recognizable up when I rebooted it.
Details: TC 7.3.1 in extended mode, AirportExpress 7.3.1 in extended mode, AirportExpress 6.3 (old model) connected to router.
    Thanks,
    Max

    MasterMoo,
Some have found that simply renewing the DHCP lease on the device affected restores connectivity. Try this:
On the Mac in question, open System Prefs.
    Go to Network.
Airport should be at the top of the list on the left.
Highlight it and click “Advanced...” in the lower right hand corner.
    Click “TCP/IP”.
    Click “Renew DHCP Lease.
    Click “OK”.
Now see if connectivity is restored.
    *Reduce the DHCP Lease Time*
If it is restored, but continues to drop periodically, some have found that reducing the DHCP lease time improves their network connectivity.
    Launch Airport Utility
Select your Time Capsule on the left.
    Click “Manual Setup”.
Click “Internet” from the toolbar at the top of the window.
Set "Connection Sharing:" to "Share a pubic IP address".
    Select the “DHCP” tab.
Ensure that the DHCP address range is wide enough to cover all of your devices.
Set "DHCP Beginning Address:" to 10.0.1.2
Set "DHCP Ending Address:" to 10.0.1.200
Change “DHCP Lease” to a shorter time. (This determines the amount of time a device will have a valid IP address from the Time Capsule. If this does not refresh soon enough, devices may appear to lose network connectivity.)
Next, if the device that is experiencing connectivity issues appears in the "DHCP Reservations:" field, then remove it.
Click “Update” in the lower right hand corner.
Wait for the Time Capsule to restart
Now go to the device that has been affected
and then see if your network connectivity improves.
Let us know if the suggestions above helped resolve the issue.

  • Wifi performance issues on macbook pro

Hello, I have an older MacBook Pro running OS X 10.7.5 that is having serious wifi issues (really slow browsing and accessing sites) and even regularly appears to drop the wifi connection.  It also has trouble printing to our HP wireless printer.  I am confident the issue is with the Macbook as we have 2 other windows laptops that work fine (and can print reliably), as well as iPads and iphones that all seem to be working OK.
We are using a Timecapsule wifi router that is located close-by, and all the other devices seem to be reliably connecting.
If anyone has any suggestion or diagnostics I can run on the Macbook to help diagnose the problem it would be really appreciated.
    Thankyou

Hold down the option key and select the Wi-Fi menu in the menu bar. What values are shown for the following?
              PHY Mode
              Channel
              Security
              Signal/Noise or RSSI
              Transmit Rate
Please do not post the BSSID, as that information is private.
Now hold down the option key again and select

  • Why is my 3GS a 5th of the wifi network speed in my house?

    I have a strange problem.
I have a MacPro, an Air and an iMac all hooked up via Timecapsule wifi + 2 Airport Express for better signal in our house.
When only the iPhone is turned on, the speedtest shows me that is has full 10 mbit access to wifi.
When I turn on any of my computers, they also show 10 mbit access.........
But then the iPhone speed/access drops to a 5th (around 1-2 mbit).
Why???? This is really annoying, as I do a lot of streaming to my iPhone and 1-2 mbit is too slow.
Why do I need to turn off all my other computers to get max speed on 3GS?

    some questions...
what speedtest are you using to get these results on the computer... is it one located on the internet?
what speedtest are you using on the iphone... does it connect via mobile safari or is it a testing app?
    do i understand correctly:
iphone only (all computers off) the internet speedtest shows 10M down and something up
computer only (iphone other computers off) the internet speedest shows 10M down and something up
but when you have a computer and the iphone on the speed on the iphone according to the internet speedtest shows 2M down and something up
    is that correct?

  • Problems with getting WDS network to work - TimeCapsule + AirportExtreme

Hi There, Apologies if this has been answered somewhere else but I have searched and still havent managed to solve my problem.
I have a TC plugged into our cable modem which is broadcasting wirelessly fine. What I am trying to do is extend the network by using a Airport Extreme BaseStation in another room which has a PC computer plugged into the Airport Extreme via ethernet cable that (the PC doesn't have wireless capability).
so this is what I am trying to do:
    Internet - (ethernet) - TimeCapsule - (wifi) - Airport Extreme - (ethernet) - PC
The Time Capsule is running version 7.4.2 software
The Airport Extreme is running version 5.7
What I have tried so far is to set the TC to "Participate in a WDS network" on channel 1 using WPA/WPA2 Personal passwords. In the WDS settings it is set to WDS main and I have allowed the Airport ID of the AE.
In the settings on the AEI have the wireless network name set to the same as the TC, I have the radio mode on 802.11g only (i have tried the others too but didn't seem to work). The wireless mode is set to Participate in WDS network, channel set to 1 and under WDS settings I have it set as WDS relay and the ID of the TC in WDS main settings.
The TC when i look at its set up occasionaly flashes up WDS error, all it says is The device is set up as WDS network but no other Apple Wireless devices were found.
Im really scratching my head on this one, Im not an expert on networks at all but normally configuring apple stuff has caused a lot less headaches that this.
Can anyone tell me if I am doing anything obviously wrong or any suggestions as to what I can do to get this working. (I personally blame the PC for not having wireless!!!)
    Cheers
    D

    Welcome to the discussion area!
WDS can be tricky. Instead of setting up the second device as a relay, you might try setting it up as a remote. Normally, a relay is used between a base and a remote. Take a look at the excellent instructions previously posted by expert Tesserax as follows:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2355832&tstart=0
And you could also refer to Apple's instructions on pages 42-44 in the Designing AirPort Networks Guide

  • Can selected drives hang up timecapsule?

I have a White Macbook (Early 2008) running OSX 10.7.5 that has been having crashing and shutdown problems lately. I am wondering if it has to do with source drives being backed up and/or destination drives. Let me explain:
Source drives: I have one Maxtor 320GB extrenal drive attached to the Macbook via USB through a hub. This is selected to be backed up along with the main internal hard drive.
Desintation drives: I am running TimeMachine for backup through an Apple 1TB TimeCapsule/Wifi Router using a WiFi network connection (FYI: this Time Capsule and one USB-connected 1TB drive are at capacity backing up two other Macs on this network). Connected to that TimeCapsule/Router via ethernet hardwire is an iMac which has an external dual drive bay attached to it via USB. One 2TB drive is used for work on that iMac, the other 2TB is partitioned into 1TB "drives" and one of these is being used as an auxillary backup drive. It is this latter drive that the White Macbook is backing up to.
The problem I am having is a shutdown problem, occuring most often along with program crashes (which has also been happening with increasing frequency - mainy Picasa but also Firefox, iTunes and others). Whether a program on the machine crashes or not upon Shutdown, the OS will sometimes hang up on the desktop with the rainbow wheel spinning interminably. This often happens when the the Macbook is shutdown while a Backup is running. In this case, the Macbook simply never reaches a shutdown point. It can run all night and all day in this state. What also often happens is that the Macbook will go through the whole shutdown process right up to the point where it reaches a white screen. It will stop at this point and not progress any further - this white screen will also stay on interminably.
The only way to finish shutdown or in fact to interrupt these processes in any way is a forced power-off by holding down the Macbook's power button.
I took it to the Genius bar and they just wiped the hard drive and did a fresh OS install. It went OK like this for a few days, but eventually these crashing and non-shutdown problems recurred.
Does anyone have any idea if it might be the backup confuguration causing this, or somethign else?

You know, when I had a car (I don't drive anymore, just walk and bike now), I would occasionally not drive it for a day or two (not very often, though). It would take a moment longer to start up after that. Ever left a car out in the ice cold for a week? Be careful starting that baby up.
It's not a very good analogy, and most of the mechanics don't apply, but shutting down and starting up an HDD puts some "wear and tear" on the device as well. In fact, since an HDD is designed to spin rapidly and run for indefinite periods of time, by leaving it on all the time, you are doing what the HDD is designed to do. They are clearly not optimized for spin-down / spin-up cycles, because this significantly slows down the system, and has been known to cause temporary "freezes" in the OS.
Seriously, turning your HDD off as often as possible won't necessarily extend its life, and may even shorten it, depending on how you use it. As has been mentioned, many systems run for months at a time without shutting down, especially servers. No server can afford to spin-down it's HDDs during periods of inactivity (if there were such a thing for a server), because it then cannot perform its job.
Take it easy, and let your HDD do its thing. Let it spin-down at the most natural time for an HDD: when you shut your computer off. Other than that, I recommend letting it go all the time. Though there is something to be said for that little bit of electricity that is saved, and therefore prevents another polar bear from having to float away on a chunk of ice.
Seriously, though, energy conversation is awesome, and if that is your reasoning, I totally support that. But the argument from the life of the HDD is mostly moot.

  • Having problem with wake on demand want to downgrade AP Utility

Having a problem with wake on demand. Some people have had results downgrading firmware to 7.6 from 7.6.1.However in order to do this I need Airport Utility 5.6. I am running Mountain lion and and it won't let me install APU 5.6 Any suggestions??  I am trying to wake my imac with a macbook-black via timecapsule wifi. Thanks in advance for any help!

However iphoto on the macbook does not remember where the shared library is (on firewire 800 external drive attached to imac). Is this normal behavior or is something still wrong?
Suggest that you check with the iPhoto experts on that question, which may involve
"re-pointing" the iPhoto application at the iPhoto library, or some other tips.
Be sure to mention that you have downgraded firmware, as that might be a clue of some sort to the iPhoto guys.

  • Will a new router increase my broadband speed in this configuration

How much (if at all) can I increase my broadband speed by getting a faster router. Here's my config:
DSL line --> DSL modem --> Lynksys BEFSR41 Router --> Ethernet cat-5 wiring in house --> TimeCapsule WiFi
The computers using this network are an Intel iMac (10.6), a PowerPC iMac (10.4), and two Intel MacBooks (10.6).
The modem/router are located in an in-wall distribution box in a utility room. I want to keep the hardwired ethernet available in case the WiFi quits temporarily. The TimeCapsule is in a good location (top shelf bookcase on first floor) for coverage of my 2-story house. In principle could eliminate the Lynksys modem, and use the TC as the primary router, but it would be difficult to physical locate the TC where it could both distribute to the house ethernet and have good radio reception.
Testing via the hardwire ethernet (using Speakeasy and speedtest.net) shows download and upload speed 1.27Mbps and 0.32Mb/s. My ISP is pacbell.net. I get the same result via my W-Fi. Speedtest.net tells me my result is about 40% of the average for pacbell.net to my zip code 94301.
I've heard there are much faster routers than the BEFSR41, but I don't know if my internet speed is limited by my current router or by pacbell's DSL service.
    Any insights would be appreciated.

Will a new router increase my broadband speed
No...your speed is only going to be as fast as your weekest link, which in your case is the DSL modem and the connection speed package you subsribe to.
