Timecode and Canon DSLR

Do the Canon DSLR cameras shoot timecode? If so, can Premiere recognize it? I've had 2 projects with source footage from Canon 7D cameras and all of the clips start at 00:00:00:00. This latest project has over 6 hours of source footage, I could really, really use some timecode...

Hi Colin,
Thanks for the reply on this. I don't care how they do it, a sidecar file would be fine, but it's soooo useful.  I don't even mind if it's something we had to trigger in Bridge, since Bridge seems to be where I start out with hundreds of clips.  I use Bridge to add the metadata to multiple clips at once (e.g. the tape/card name/number and scene).  Bridge can see the camera model, lens, ISO, etc for photos, but doesn't seem to bother for video.  Please, pretty please Adobe?
Getting the camera, lens, iso, aperture and shutter speed has been useful in tracking down a couple of issues in the past, like why is this shot so noisy, oh someone stuck it at ISO6400!  That sort of thing.
Yes, you are correct that the timecode is not frame perfect, but since we sync the times on all cameras at the start of the day it's close enough to be able to pin point clips fairly accurately when looking for them.  We can then run them through PluralEyes to sync them perfectly (oh, that's another story!).
In FCP we use a chequer board system to lay all clips on the sequence according to the timecode, using multiple tracks, one for each camera.  If we had 3 or 4 cameras rolling then we simply reduce the video size to 50% in the sequence and move them to the 4 quarters of the monitor so we can see them all at once - similar to multicam. The difference is we can still see every single clip taken by every camera throughout an entire day of shooting, on a single sequence timeline, in chronological order, more or less synchronised.  We can scrub through seeing all cameras simultaneously, and instantly see what each camera did that day.
Why would we want to do this? It's just a really quick way of reviewing the day's action! If the cameras were split during the day covering different things happening then this allows the editor to quickly scrub through all the clips, see what was happening at the "same time" in different locations (how do you even begin to do this without timecode or slate?).  It also familiarises them with all the clips and scenes in a single sequence for the entire day.
Now, as Colin pointed out, the timecode is not accurate enough to sync with, but it's close enough that knowing roughly what time of day something was shot we can quickly scrub through and find a shot very quickly.  This effectively becomes our reference sequence.
I can't find any way of doing this in Premiere Pro CS5, but it was literally 2 or 3 mouse clips in FCP to take all the clips from the logging bin and create a sequence like this. There seems no way of doing this in CS5.
How long would this take without time code, and with CS5 as it stands today?    The THREE things I really miss from FCP are the timecode, multiclip sequence and the join through edit.   Oh well......
Naturally, I've submitted a feature request

  • Transfer HD video from canon dslr to iPad 2 via cam kit Question!

    Hey all.
    I have a Canon DSLR that records 1080p HD video at 24, 25 & 30 fps and 720p HD video at 50 & 60 fps.
I have an iPad first generation with a ipad cam kit for transferring video and photos. It transfers photos just fine, but with video, it can't transfer full 1080p clips at all directly from the camera using the USB cam kit connector or via SD card using that adaptor. Nor will it transfer 720p clips using the cam kit unless the clips are not more than 30 fps. Since the canon t3i dslr shoots 720p video at 60 fps, the video is not viewable unless I first transfer it thru my iMac at home and THEN load it on the iPad.
Since I travel a lot, this is not convenient for me.
I want to be able to transfer my HD movies directly onto my iPad while on the road and edit them and then upload them to my travel blog or YouTube.
The first gen iPad cannot run the new iMovie app. Only the new iPad 2 can. So I was thinking of upgrading to the iPad 2.....
HOWEVER...I want to know if I will have the same problem trying to transfer my HD video directly from my canon t3i DSLR via the cam kit while on the road so that I can view and edit the clips on my iPad 2?
I know getting the MacBook air is an option, but I prefer traveling with the iPad. I just want to know if any video/photographers who have the new iPad 2 and canon dslr can answer my questions.
    Thanks so much.
    Cheers.

Yes, they will transfer as long as they are in 720p. However, you might want to check this if you are willing to try. Might save you from having to buy a new iPad?

  • Lightroom 5 with Canon in Pack and Nikon DSLR

Good day. I would like to ask you whether Lightroom 5 supplied with Canon DSLR is fully functional without restrictions and whether that supports Nikon cameras. Or it is blocked only for Canon DSLR and Nikon DSLR not supported. I have the opportunity to purchase this version, but own Nikon D300. Sorry for my English :-) Thank you very much Rosta A.

Do you mean someone is offering to sell you a disc that was bundled with their camera?
I doubt LR, itself, is crippled, but there could be some restriction for licensing or some hoops to jump through to get the serial number, which might only work if you have the camera’s sales receipt or know other details about the purchase.
There may also be fine print that says only the person who purchased the camera can use the LR serial number.  I don’t know how Adobe would enforce that restriction, but maybe they have some way, especially if this LR version is for a camera purchase in a different country.

  • I use an iMac 10.6.8 with iPhoto '09 to download digital images from Canon DSLRs. Until the last two weeks there has been no trouble whatever importing images by  a USB connection from either camera to the Mac. Now the process will not kick in. Any ideas?

I use an Mac OSX 10.6.8 with iPhoto 09 to download digital images from two Canon DSLRs. Until the last week, there has been no problem whatever in launching the import procedure once the USB connection has been connected and the camera switched on. Now the process will not kick in at all for either camera.  I can't find a solution through iPhoto help or from other sources.
Any ideas to fix?  (I admit I have not tested the USB cable at this time).

    What does "kick in" mean?
    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?
    Post back with the result.

  • Live capture with FCE 4 and Canon HV20 - End of Tape when capture in HD

I have a Canon HV20 HiDef video camera that was given to me to record an event. I want to try and avoid using the tapes if possible and capture the video directly into my MacBook Pro using FCE 4.
If I try and capture video when the camera is set to HD output, the capture screen comes up, I can see the image from the camera on the FCE4 screen for a split second, then I get a message indicating the end of tape has been encountered. (The tape isn't even being used and is no where near the end anyway).
If I change the camera to DV output, I can change the FCE4 Easy Setup to simple DV control and it works fine to capture live, except that it is no longer in HD. I get no error message about the tape end being hit.
I am unable to find any Easy Setup configuration that will allow me to record live. Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Play your tape forward to a position where there is continuous Timecode and try again.
As Ian suggests the correct _AIC Easy Setup_ is the only way to get HDV in to your Mac via FCE.
Note: Your camera must be set to output HDV assuming it recorded HDV.

  • Premiere Pro CS5 playback stops with Canon DSLR footage

I am using Canon DSLR footage (5D and 1D). When I import the footage for the first time everything works OK. If I save, close and reopen the project without doing anyother activity on my PC everything continues to work OK.
My problem is that after I close the project and start doing other activity on the PC e.g. using Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Flash etc and not necessarily all of them, and then reopen Premiere Pro I then start to get a problem with playback stopping on the timeline after about 5-10 seconds.
What I have found is that if I import a fresh Canon DSLR file from the camera then everything starts working fine again until I start using other programs.
There must be something on my PC that is causing a conflict but I can't work out what it is.
Are there any known issues that might help me solve this problem.
My PC is running Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit. I have two x 2.66Ghz quad core processors (NOT hyperthreading), 12 GB RAM, Nvidia FX 4800 graphics card.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I have finally resolved this problem and it is several weeks since the "fix" with no repeat of the problem.
I uninstalled Nero from my system and straight away the problem resolved.
I noticed that prior to removing Nero that it was taking priority over Quicktime which, I think, was causing the conflict with codec for the Canon DSLR files in Premier.
It has now been 4 weeks since I removed Nero and there has been no sign of the problem of the video footage stopping in playback on the timeline.

  • How do I choose my first Canon DSLR camera?

I've had a Sony for 4 years, but owning a Canon is my dream. I've grown as a photographer, winning some contests and doing small family/group shoots. I still need to learn about manual shooting. It's seems like there are so many variations. Then I hear it's not best to buy the kit. I've been looking at the EOS T3i. Can anyone advise me on this?

    Hi,
The standard Canon-assembled "kits" are fine....
Those are the ones where Canon themself has pre-packaged camera and lens(es) together.
With the T3i you'll most commonly find it bundled with the EF-S 18-55mm IS (or IS/STM) lens. You also likely willl find it with both the 18-55mm and the EF-S 55-250 IS (now also sometimes in STM version). An alternative you will somtimes find is the camera with the EF-S 18-135mm IS (also somtimes in STM version), though this "kit" lens is more often bundled with the 60D or 70D, than the Rebel series.
You have to watch out for retailer bundles, where they substitute lower quality items and add a bunch of inexpensive stuff such as a flimsy tripod, an off-brand memory card, some poor quality filters, etc. You will see these online occasionally, from some less than reputible "dealers". Often the prices sound too good to be true, because they are. Sometimes they use bait n switch tactics, telling you things such as the kit doesn't include a battery charger, but they have one available at a steeply inflated price, or that the camera is a special version that has the menu only in some obscure language and that's why it's so much cheaper.
So long as you stick with the more reputible online dealers such as B&H Photo, Adorama, etc. you will generally be fine. Amazon is generally good, too. Many people find good deals at Best Buy, as well. There are many good dealers to choose among... no need to go to some of the shadier ones. A basic rule of thumb... if you find prices that are significantly less than B&H or Adorama, be suspicious. Those are two of the highest volume stores in the U.S., so other dealers are unlikely to be able to beat their prices by very much. If the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
Really all the current Canon DSLRs are quite capable of taking great photographs. There are differences in some of the features, model to model. One of the "factory" kits may be a convenient starting point and can be good, or if you have a bit more to spend you might want to choose a camera model that leaves enough in your budget to be able to upgrade lenses or add other accessories you feel you need.... In most cases, lenses will ultimately make more difference in your photos than the camera they are used upon.
For example, instead of the EF-S 18-55mm "kit" lens, you might want to consider the wider and longer EF-S 15-85mm IS USM lens as a very versatile choice. Or, if you like to shoot in lower light situations, you may prefer the EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM lens. Instead of the EF-S 55-250mm "kit" lens, you might prefer the EF 70-200mm f4L IS USM or EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM.... These are professional grade, workhorse lenses that cost a lot more than the kit lenses, but provide a number of benefits: faster and more accurate autofocus, more effecive image stabilization, higher build quality and better sealing against dust and moisture, and more. Image quality will be better, too.... though the "kit" lenses, used right, are pretty darned capable.
You also might already have some more specialized lenses in mind.... Such as a fast, short telephoto like the EF 50/1.4 or EF 85/1.8 if you plan to shoot a lot of portraits. Or perhaps a macro lens such as the EF-S 60/2.8 USM or EF 100/2.8 USM or 100/2.8L USM IS, if macro photography is something you want to do a lot. Or you might enjoy photographing scenery and want a wide angle lens such as the EF-S 10-22mm USM.
I wish people would spend more time choosing their lenses than their cameras, since the lenses will actually make a bigger difference. And senses chosen well might actually outlast your camera.... I switched to the Canon system in 2001, buying two film cameras and four lenses at the time (I had a really good idea what I needed because I'd already been shooting with a variety of other systems for 20+ years). I still have and use three of those four lenses, and have added a number of others as needs and opportunity arose in the years since.
Meanwhile I've switched from film to digital cameras, and used four different generations of DSLRs extensively (more generations than that if I count short duration use of loaners or rental cameras). Now the development of digital technology has slowed a bit, so there might be less need to upgrade as frequently... But still I expect cameras will come and go... While lenses - bought right - are more of a long term investment.
Think of what you are buying as a "system".... camera, lens(es), and accessories. In addition to the camera and lens(es), you'll need memory cards, possibly spare batteries, lens hoods, maybe some useful filters, an accessory flash, perhaps a tripod, a convenient bag to carry it all around in... Well, you get the idea. You also might need software, a computer that's up to the task or image editing, extra hard drive storage and backup space, etc.
You don't have to get everything right away, but may want to lay out a plan, prioritize what you have to get now and what you'd like to add later based upon your needs.  Don't worry if your plans might change over time (they will!)... just lay out a plan now as a starting point.

  • CC 2014 and Canon RAW

So, I have been searching the forums for the last hour and can't find if Canon DSLR RAW (via Magic Lantern) is supported in CC 2014. It does state that 'Canon RAW' is supported. I'm Shooting RAW video from my 5D MK3 in 1920x1080 and if this format is supported, I would definitely look into including this as I haven't seen the need to upgrade from CS6. Does anyone know if this is the case? If it is, how will it work? Will it integrate with ACR? Not sure how they will address the 14bit format??  Thanks in advance

  • I keep reading that i need converter software to import Canon DSLR (Mark II or D6) H.264 MOV file to iMovie? True? I'm confused.

I keep reading that i need converter software to import Canon DSLR (Mark II or D6) H.264 MOV file to iMovie? True? I'm confused.

iMovie 9.0.9 is the latest version you can run unless you upgrade to the Mavericks operating system (OS 10.9).
Your profile (at the bottom of your post) mentions OS 10.4.11 (Tiger) which is why I mentioned that.
The list of supported cameras is not comprehensive  but articles such as:
    https://getsatisfaction.com/apple/topics/make_canon_eos_6d_h_264_1080p_footage_e ditable_in_fcp_imovie
do indicate that conversion is needed before import, at least for iMovie 9.  Although it's a recent article it doesn't specifically mention  iMovie 10.
iMovie 10 has a very much changed interface and a different folder structure so upgrading is not trivial so I would not advise rushing into upgrading.
Maybe someone with knowledge of this camera can help.

  • Adobe Photoshop Elements 7   - Comparison with Picasa and Canon Zoom Browser

I have recently bought a new computer and connected it to a USB hard drive which contained all my photos and a copy of an Adobe Photoshop Elements (APE) 4 catalog which permitted me to run APE 4 directly from the USB drive. The new computer runs on Windows 7 with Adobe Photoshop Elements 7. When I attempted to open the old catalog, created in APE 4 APE 4, APE 7 needed to convert it. The converted catalog then needed to reconnect with files and this took hours because APE seems to be incapable of sorting this out automatically. On the other hand Picasa 3 dealt with the matter in minutes and Canon Zoom Browser dealt with it in seconds. Why is this? What are the advantages of using APE 7 over Picasa 3 or Canon Zoom Browser?

    John McQuade wrote:
I avoid keeping photos on the C Drive of my computer because of adverse past experiences of losing data when problems arose and it was necessary to reinstall Windows. I prefer to use two separate hard disc drives connected to my computer using  USB ports so that I have all photos and catalogs on each drive. PSE catalogs appear to be drive letter specific so that a catalog created on one drive will not function if simply copied to the other. In PSE-4 I overcame this problem by opening the copied catalog and changing all references to drive letters. In PSE-7 I am unable to open the database and my goal is to find a quick and efficient way of modifying a copied catalog so that it functions on a drive different to the one on which the catalog was created.
Finally, and at long last, a kindred spirit that won't keep photos on the OS drive. I was told as recently as >> yesterday << that my post about saving photos anyplace else but  "C:/" was "non-sequitur".
Second, I'm sort of accustomed to "USB drive", as a synonym for "flash drive", and "Ext HDD" referring to an external HDD, (this makes sense, at least in my twisted individual perception), so accordingly, I apologize for my knee-jerk lecture about it.  (In hindsight, perhaps the only child in me is expecting too much also).
I never use external HDDs, but rather install additional HDDs internally to accomplish the same net result. My sensibilities here are, they are quite a bit less expensive, they do the same job, and you don't have addional s*** laying all over the place.
IMO, you are overthinking the database issue. I get to say that since I have no such ability to do so, and additionally, I have never been unable to reconnect a catalog other than within the normal Windows environment.
Therefore, I suggest changing the drive letter(s) to that of the old drive(s), and remain in blisslful ignorance as to whether PSE-7 is using the SN# or Drive letter to do its "dirty work".
As Mr. Ellis has pointed out, you're trying to do too many things at once. I'm going to suggest an "experimental" fix which is sort of backwards from Mr. Ellis', but retains the same spirit.
Install PSE-4 on the NEW machine! Insert its catalog file into its (PSE-4) correct folder. This location can be found by "Help" > "System Info".
Upon installation, PSE-4 will generate a new catalog, "My Catalog", therefore you must change the old catalog's name, (say "My Catalog 2"), to avoid a conflict.
You might have to change the "compatibility" mode for PSE-4 several times, before PSE-7 will be able to follow the file path.
As an additional note, since PSE-7 is technically, (according to Adobe), "incompatible", you can match its compatibility mode with PSE-4's, at the onset. After you have stabilized the system, change PSE-7's mode back to whatever works best.
If you need any more info on these operations, please feel free to post back.
I would like to add, that my PSE-7 in Windows 7 runs poorly in comparision with the same program in the XP environment. This seems not to be "typical", but IMO, worth mentioning.
Please also bear in mind that you can paste the entire catalog file into the "Open Catalog" dialog box, and PSE will place in its folder for you...!
Then, assuming the HDD letters are the same, it will reconnect "instantly", or in the case of a PSE-4 ".psa" cat file, PSE-7 will convert it, then open it instantly.
As an afterthought, by changing the drive letters, then pasting the .psa file into the "Catalog Open" dialog box, you do not have to make any additional installations of PSE, nor muck about in any database.

  • Epson and Canon printers not working with 10.7.5

Anyone know if there is a fix for Epson and Canon printers for 10.7.5? Did Apple intentionally switch off printer drivers to force us to upgrade to Mountain Lion? My Canon printer stopped working for months already and there is still no fix.

  • Timecode and logging troubles

    Hi,
I have recently been having a lot of trouble capturing logged media from my Panasonic AG-DVC30 camera. I thought at first it was the tape so I went out and bought a new one, but sadly that seems not to be the issue. It seems as if the problem is occurring because there are two timecodes, one when the tape is stopped and another for the actual footage. This makes it so that when Final Cut tries to capture it seems to become confused as it tries to rewind or fast forward, and instead goes into a rut in which the display on my camera shows the timecode being switched back and forth between the two timecodes. Finally Final Cut gives up and says that it is unable to find the timecode break or something like that. I am really desperate to figure this out so please post if you have any suggestions. I probably just did not set something up right, but I'm definitely stumped.
    Thanks,

Never seen such a problem. If that is what's actually happening, send your camcorder in for service NOW.
But more likely is that when you started and stopped during recording, the camera lost track of the timecode and started over again. This often happens if you review footage after a shot then don't cue the tape back to the right position. Hence the timecode break message from FCP.
