TIMECODE BLUES!

I posted this in the VideoLounge too, but maybe it belongs more (or will get more views) here. Plus posting the issue in he Video Lounge got me all worked up again about how annoying it is.
repost:
I've edited on EDIT and Avid, anyone else think adobes treatment of timecode is rediculous?
I can't make a 'windowdub' of a timeline for a producer to watch, unless (I've found a way to trick it...) I lay a blank title track and drag it across the whole job and apply the video 'timecode generate' effect to the blank title clip. Even then adobe (ON MY 12 GIG RAM MATROX AXIO LE SYSTEM) likes to render the timecode, it doesnt come off cleanly and can skip numbers and go slowly when your quickly shuttling the CTI around on the timeline. On all the edit and avid software, 'timeline timecode' or 'source timecode' even BOTH SIMULTANEOUSLY were applied with a checking of a checkbox in the preferences dialogue box for review veiwing/editing of a piece!
What the devil was adobe thinking! Timecode is the MOST important thing for an editor, not the fancy effect (which my system does ALL of in real time - even when pulling 10 'picture in picture' Matrox 3D DVE effected video streams together WITH titles each - but it wont easily handle time code!) Maybe to many 'home video editors' today don't have need of timeline timecode anymore...but for those of us who work with producers, how are we quickly and efficiently supposed to communicate positions of edits to be made on the job!
The other thing is...
I have in the past, needed to replace a piece of an audio track of a 'linked togther' clip. Or because of a J-cut, I have lost the 'link' between my video and audio tracks (you drag one out, the other doesnt link and follow intuitively).
This has lead to extreme problems on my end, because, I try to drag my video clip into my source viewer, mark down the timecoded ins and outs, and then I wil drag the audio from the bin (because in the cource viewer with a clip off the timeline, you can only shuttle between the ins and outs of the TIMELINE clip, not the margin of whats in teh bin) line up the time codes from what i had on my video, in-and-out mark it and drag the audio down to the timeline...THEY DONT MATCH UP!!!
^(this might be hard to understand, its the best I can describe it, if you have tried something similar OR worked in - especially old autodesk EDIT - you understand getting the time code from the source viewer and matching up audio from the the bins to the video, etc...Man I miss old Edit 6.0 alot!)
In EDIT and Avid, BOTH of the video and audio tracks CLEARLY were marked with their OWN timecodes, so you cuold play with them separately and make SURE they were still lined up. E.G. inserting B-Roll in the video track, and on the othr side of the B-Roll on the video and audio tracks, time code numbers appear next to timeline clip Picons, so you can make sure the numbers match!
Seriously, do editors design the software or just computer programmers!
I miss the days of Avid and Edit. Not that I'm complaining, my AXIO LE system performs absolutely flawlessly and exTREMELY fast with my adobe software!
Awaiting the new Matrox Axio LE drivers for the end of feruary to install ProdPrem CS4, exicted!
If anyone can let me know easy ways to cure my timecode blues - lets hear it!!!
I could probably stripe timecode onto a VHS (usually the clunky old format we use for internal review) with my old Panasonic 7510 and digi processor unit...but thats so much work for a windowdub!

Windowdubs are something I'm asked to create alot at my workplace, so the producer can go mull it over and give get back to me with a 'paper edit' using visible timecode (hour:min:sec:frame) that runs along the bottom of the whole pice. I cut trim insert etc...according to the generated running timecode on my VHS windowdub...Adobe doesnt easily place 'timeline timecode' over a while timeline (save for my work around), it can only place the effect on a clip to teh best of my knowledge.
It got really annoying before I found my work-around to place the timecode effect on everyclip and then WRITE IN the numbers corrsponding to the time on my timeline hashmarks, unless I'm completely attacking trying to turn on 'timeline timecode' the wrong way...
To clarify the second issue:
Imagine you place PART of a clip (the center few seconds of the total captured asset) on a timeline. Now after editing things, you come back to it and want to break out the stereo track to mono and fine tune the audio.
You go to the clip in the bin, break out to mono, and bring your tracks over to the video clip (delete the old stereo audio track laying there). The WHOLE clips audio come out of the bin in mono fashion. Good luck trying to trim down and line up the new whole-clip mono tracks with your video excerpt, because the timecodes of the video and audio tracks, when placed in your source viewer (which tells you time codes of clip ins and outs), will NOT line up. Try it. Maybe I have a defective software suite!
For instance if the video excerpt SOURCE time code is 01:02:30:00 to 01:02:45:00 (which you write down as reference on a sticky note in front of you!) and the whole captured clip in the bin is actually 01:02:00:00 to 01:03:00:00 it SHOULD be easy to replace the audio without replacing the video track.
So you go to break out the audio from the bin clip place the mono audio clips in the source viewer, and cycle through the "toggle take audio and video" button on the source viewer until you ONLY have the audio showing (signified by waveform in the viewer instead of black or video). Find 01:02:30:00 and mark an in on that audio track, now do the same for the outs 01:02:45:00, now bring the mono tracks down to the timeline and 'snap' inline with the corresponding video excerpt. Do your audio and video line up?
Better yet dont delete the old stereo track, and play the stereo and mono alongside, hear the ~5 second +/- vacinity delay?
On edit and Avid, in the corners of the clips on the timeline (both ends a.k.a. head/tail) little numbers for BOTH source and timeline timecode were written, so if you ever had to replace audio (or recapture audio only and replace audio - more likely if you captured with bad levels!) you could EASILY replace the audio!
Tell me for years on CS3 here I've been donig things wrong! Or is my software messed up?!?!
If you've never had the need to be concerned with timecode (home editing/weddings etc...) I can understand, but when making documentaries or working with a producer selecting clips its rediculous!

    Has anyone had any success pasting a value into the timecode window?  I can't seem to paste even itf I click it first and it turns blue.  I can type it in, but I need to copy and paste values. There's a lot of them.

  • Split Edits using Timecode (dashboard) on FCPX 10.0.7 - icons?

    Hi! My FCPX 10.0.7 does not show the "roll edit" or "ripple edit" icon in blue on the timecode dashboard, and just shows blue-ed playhead icon. Because of this when I manually enter on the dashboard frame counts to go forward or back at the time of attempting Split edits, the edit point in the time line does not move. Only the pleayhead moves. How so? Is there a way for the dashboard to not show playhead icon?? Please help!
    Thank you!

    Please post a screen shot. You select the edit point and type -15. You do NOT click in the dashboard. You simply start typing after the edit is selected and you will see this

  • No Chapter markers in share - DVD or blu ray?????

    Hi there,
    Latest version of Lion and FCX.
    I burned my 1st blu ray for a client last night (wuhoo!). It looks great.  Outstanding actually.  Used a Matrox CompressHD card to compress the H.264.
    But I noticed no chapter markers present.
    Thinking it was the matrox card, I did some investigation.
    Turns out that chapter markers are 'apparently', NOT transferred during the share feature??!??!  It doesn't matter what I use for compression - markers simply don't transfer from FCX to Compressor 4!?!?!
    Maybe I did something wrong - I'm just learning FCX after using FCP for years.
    I had to re-create the chapters in Compressor 4.
    Is that the way to have chapter markers carry across?
    If so, that is simply one of the most asinine decisions about this product.  Forget all the hassles about not importing previous projects etc.. as that is a different issue, but discontinuing one of the most basic features from the previous product is just ridiculous.
    Can anyone confirm the chapter marker workflow?  Again, it could be me doing something wrong, but I have a funny (and SAD!) feeling I'm not...
    Cheers,
    Keebler

    No, you're not doing something wrong, chapter markers are a glaring omission from FCP X but apparently, Apple sees no future in DVD or even Blu Ray, so we're stuck with using Compressor or some other application to add chapter markers.
    Fortunately, this is very simple if you list the timecode (each on separate lines in a text file) where you want the chapter markers to be - Compressor will import them and the markers appear automatically.
    I agree with you though - it's pretty lame.

  • Preview Blu-Ray Pop-Up Menus in Project Preview Window

    Hi-
    I'm trying to test how my blu-ray pop-up menu looks and functions in the project window, but I can't seem to find a way to get my pop-up menu to appear (other than in the project menu frame) . On most set-top blue-ray players, there's a button labeled "Pop-Up Menu" or "Title Menu", but I don't see one in the Project Preview Window when previewing. Is there a way to test this before actually burning a blu-ray? Maybe I'm missing something obvious. I hope so. I'm not sure if it's related, but I can't seem to get the "Title Button" on the disc Properties panel to change to anything other than "Stop", either. (Using Encore CS5)

    Currently, Encore does not support popup menu preview.
    But, as workaround you can see the popup menu over the video for a particular frame.
    Steps -
    1. Link a popup menu with a timeline
    2. Select the popup menu in project panel
    3. Go to Popup menu tab in property panel
    4. Select the timeline from background timeline drop down
    5. enter the timecode(frame) for the timeline.
    You can see the popu menu over a video for a particular frame.

  • Distracting blue timeline color in Premiere CC 8.1

    How do I change the distracting blue color of the timeline timecode, boundary of a selected panel, and other elements now found in Premiere CC 8.1?  It jumps right off the screen and is not what I want to be looking at when doing any kind of color correction.  There is no obvious Preference available to make a color change.  Who decided that we needed this "neon sign" on our timeline?

    Near the top of the "Overview" page for this forum is a feature-request/bug report link. Use that to complain.
    There is, unfortunately, no way to change the blue to anything else. This is a feature that I've never heard of ONE request for ... yet was put into place over all the Adobe suite by their overall graphic design team.
    And ... they also limited how 'bright' you can set the black-to-charcoal background. So you've less choice/control now than before.

  • Blu-ray Error: internal error, code 11. Subtitle set too close

    Hi,
    I have this error, when I'm building blu-ray disc with subtitles:
    Blu-ray Error: "internal error 11 (software internal error: ..\..\Private\GraphicsEncoders\PGProcessor.cpp, line 236)", Code: "11", Note: "subtitle set too close".
    I don't have any idea what to do, tried everything.
    If I delete most of subtitles and there's only several lines left it builds it without any problems.
    Today I have deadline with project.
    Please help if You have the solution.

    Yes, that was the problem. I've changed timecodes in txt with subtitles and now it works.

  • PAL versus NTSC will both play in a US blu-ray player/HDTV?

    I'm sure I could test this and find out, but I'm sure someone has a quick answer.  If my assets are 720 X 576 I have heard that Encore re-sizing will create some quality issues.  Would I be better off just editing this in Premiere Pro and Saving in the same 720 X 576 format, burning it to a 25 gb Blu-Ray disk in Encore and then playing it in my Blu-Ray player as is, or would this not work and the asset would have to be re-sized to 720 X 480?

    Hi.
    A few things.
    1 - PAL BluRay is frankly a mess. you cannot use 25p, only 50i and support is sporadic as it just is not in the BluRay specs.
    2 - For universal BluRay, you must use either 60i, 30p or 24p for it to work on US/Japanese players.
    3 - 720x576 is not BluRay spec - it is SD. Whilst you can use 720x576, it is not recommended as few players will cope with this.
    You definitely do not want to scale this (upres) in Encore. Or PPro. It will look like a dogs dinner.
    4 - Converting from PAL to NTSC involves more than scaling - the frame rate has to be altered from 25 to 29.97 (30 actually, but we're not talking about timecodes & drop/non drop frame counts now )
    It needs to be done properly - Jeff Bellune has a superb tutorial on acheiving this with open source software at http://bellunevideo.com/tutlist.php
    Hope this helps

    RAM 12GB, 1800Hz
    Core i7, 3,8GHz

    Do anybody know why this happens?
    It happens not only with PE 10, also happens with Cyberlink PowerProducer 5.5 .

    Thank You Steve,
    the videos added are:
    H.264/MP4 from Samsung
    and AVI from Canon PowerShot
    and MOV Videos from Canon Ixus
    Camcorder Model is Samsung HMX-H100
    The project settings were:
    method: HD 1080i
    timebase: 25.00frames/sec
    resolution: 1920x1080
    screenformat: 25-fps-Timecode
    Audio samplerrate 48000Hz
    scrennformat: Audio-Samples
    There are no red lines above the clips if I add them to my timeline.
    I store the media and project files on a partition of primary SSD-drive.( AHCI-mode )
    Do You need any further informations to identify the problem?
    Thanks looking forward your ideas

  • Exporting to blu ray and using episode problem

    I have a 60 min HDV time line of which I would like to export to Blu Ray ready for the future so I can then delete the master files and clear some space of the main hard drive.
    I bought a program by flip 4 mac called Episode Pro which plugs in to compressor and you can use it to export files apparently quicker and better.
    Episode has a drop down box with Blu Ray settings for Video and Audio which I choose. so far so good.
    When I tell it to export and then bring up the batch monitor it tells me that it take 3 or 4 days and the first try took 3 days and then a message failed came up.
    After that I had to reboot because it messed up FCP too
    Am I doing something wrong in episode and if I was to use normal compressor for Blu Ray exporting what settings should I use, I only see HD DVD?
    Thank you in advance,
    Regards
    Darren

    These are settings for compressor that I use.
    I use bootcamp, windows, and DVDitPro HD to burn blu ray disc.
    These settings are what DVDitPro likes ( no re-encoding)

  • Create blu-ray menu for concert from scratch

    Hi all,
    I downloaded the Premiere Elements 11 trial yesterday and am evaluating it for purchase.
    My first project is a blu-ray of a concert.  I am on Windows 7 64bit.
    Project settings are:
    AVCHD 720p square pixel
    1280x720
    29.97fps
    30fps drop-frame timecode
    I want to create a simple menu for blu-ray (ie an HD menu) that has a still background and simple text buttons.  The top menu would just have "play concert" and "track selection" text only buttons.  The "track selection" button would lead to a page with all the track names as buttons that link to the scene markers for each track.  That's it.
    I only see pre-installed templates and none of them have the "HD" designation in the top right hand corner.  How do I go about achieving the menu that I want?
    Thanks, Ben

    Along with Steve's suggestions, one can customize the existing PrE Menu Sets, just relying on the "background" Menu Set structure, and adding Still Images, plus doing limited customization to the Text, etc.
    To create PrE Menu Sets (like those on Muvipix), one needs two things:
    Photoshop (Photoshop Elements has one limitation - it cannot create Layer Sets, unless that has been added to PSE, as of version 11), and then knowledge of what goes into a PrE Menu Set. Because much of the authoring functions in PrE are semi-automatic, the Menu Sets are very involved. Though I create Menus for Adobe Encore, from scratch in Photoshop, I still need one of the Library PrE Menu Sets handy, to get all of those semi-automatic conventions in front of me - lot of stuff required there.
    If you cannot customize an existing PrE Menu Set, or find similar at Muvipix, then we can offer some links, that will be helpful, but I strongly recommend that one spend a day, doing a study of the Library Menu Sets, and still having one handy, for the specifics, required. It also helps, if one understands the naming and structural conventions of DVD Menus, and then especially PrE Menu Sets.
    Good luck, and let us know if you can find what you need, or something close, that you can customize.

  • COMMENTS & TIMECODE...HELP!

    Hi all,
    I am trying to create comments on an "inserted Video" and mark them as "Important" " Not so Important" "Good" Bad, etc..
    I also want them organized  by TIMECODE. But I'll be dammed if I can to it.
    ie; Basically, after I create 25 "comments", I want that the first comment is timecode 00,and the last comment is 2;00 and all others in between them.
    I tried the A/Z drop down but none of the choices stack the comments by Timecode.
    Does anyone now of a better software that allows you to review videos, comment on them and allow your comments to be stacked by timecode?
    Thanks,
    Lou

    Rich media commenting embeds the timecode into the text of the comment itself, and the Acrobat X Ui doesn't allow for native storting of comments by their content, only by their properties (author, type, etc).
    What you can do is run a JavaScript command to export the comments into a PDF report, and custom-sort them. Here's a very basic example - with your commented video file open, paste this code into the JS console (press CTRL+J to open the console window), select it all and press CTRL+ENTER:
    function compareTimes(a,b){  return (a.contents.substr(0,11) < b.contents.substr(0,11))? -1:1; }
    this.syncAnnotScan();
    var a = this.getAnnots();
    if (a) {
      var rep = new Report();
      rep.size = 1.8;
      rep.color = color.blue;
      rep.writeText("Summary of comments by timestamp for " + this.documentFileName);
      rep.color = color.black;
      rep.writeText(" ");
      rep.size = 1.2;
      rep.writeText("Total of " + a.length + " comments in this file");
      rep.writeText(" ");
      rep.writeText(" ");
      rep.indent(20);
      var msg = "\200 page %s by %s on %s";
      a.sort(compareTimes);
      for (var i = 0; i < a.length; i++) {
        rep.writeText(" ");
        rep.writeText(util.printf(msg,1 + a[i].page,a[i].author,a[i].creationDate));
        rep.writeText("================================");
        rep.indent(20);
        rep.writeText("Contents: " + a[i].contents);
        rep.outdent(20);
      var docReport = rep.open("CommentsByTimecode.pdf");
      docReport.info.Title = "Comments Summary by Timecode for " + this.documentFileName;
    I'm assuming here that there's only one video, and no non-video comments. To handle those more complex scenarios you would need to expand the logic in the compareTimes() function to work out the sorting rules.
    If you do this a lot, you can rework the above code into a menu item (you'd need to change references to "this" into a reference to the currently-open document, as there may be more than one). Ask if you need help with that.

  • Windows Blue Screen Error Message Appears As Soon As IPod Connected

    Everytime I connect my IPod to my computer, I get the Windows Blue Screen error message. Thought it was the cable, so plugged cable in by itself. No problem. Uninstalled IPod and ITunes software and then plugged in IPod, still got the Blue Screen. The Blue Screen says something about "recent plugged in device problem". It is not the cable, it must be the IPod. Did not have this problem when I bought it. Tried it on labtop and get the same error message. I can't do updater or anything that requires me to plug the IPod into a computer because the Blue Screen appears immediately. When I unplug, the Blue Screen remains and locks up the computer so I have to restart each time. I have tried everything I can think of. Please help.

    Hi Mike thank you for replying,
    I am not able to start the computer in safe mode, safe mode with networking, last good known configuration etc, Each time it quickly blue screens and restarts about two secs into the process.
    I was unable to try a clean OS install from the disk as it gave the blue screen error shown in the original post. The same thing happened when I tried to use the repair option on the XP home disc. So i can't get into the computer at all to start diagnosing the fault, the only clue I have is the error message, and after searching the internet I haven't found much enlightenment from that yet.
    If you can help me out or suggest where to search it would be much appreciated.
    Thx
