Timecode break while capturing footage

I am having a timecode problem. I have FCP 6, and running it on OS 10.4.11; I have it set so that all of the media is backed up on an
external drive, a GLYPH GT050Q. My camera is a sony dsr-pdx 10. I had no trouble capturing footage on my new laptop, a mac book pro
in my studio, that is running on Leopard. This is the second time I have had a problem transfering from this computer since I upgraded
to FCP, but it only seems to be particular tapes that are having problems. This is a new phenomena, I have never had problems like these
before, and I am spending alot of time trying to fix the problem. I am certain that it isn't the tape, but some kind of match up issue. But I just went over my settings with a friend who edits both on
avid and on fcp, and she didn't find out the problem.
help.
EA

Well, I just did a test with my laptop, a power book g4 that runs on tiger, just as my tower does. I fear that if I upgrade my tower and power book g 4 to leopard, they will run more slowly. The new laptop I have is at another location, and it runs leopard.
Also, I learned that there is something about my external Glyph drive (the one that is larger, with more space, hooked to the tower that keeps reading time code breaks, where there are none. Meanwhile, this is not happening on the power book g4, that has another glyph drive hooked up to it.
Now this, I don't understand. Maybe its the way the drive is written.

  • 'Locating Timecode Break' while capturing

I got the software update that claimed it would fix the time code break error while capturing using Final Cut Pro. I'm using an AV Converter to do this. These are the setting I have it on, as recommended by the directions on the box the converter came in.
    Device Control: Firewire NTSC
    Capture.input: DV NTSC 48 kHz
Time code break usually occurs at around one minute, sometimes much later, other times almost instantly. I've got a legit copy of Final Cut Studio 2, and my converter always worked fine when I used it with Final Cut Express. Tried cleaning tape heads, but that didn't seem to have any effect. I'm open to any suggestions at this point, and I'm hoping it's just something simple that I might be overlooking.

    check the following:
you are capturing to an external drive and not the sytem drive
    capture settings for non-controllable device
correct version of Quick Time for your combination of FC Pro and Mac OS
the analogue to Firewire box settings (if any) are set to NTSC, for Firewire output and analogue input and set to composite or Y/C as appropriate

  • How do I stop Final Cut from seperating video on timecode breaks?

Working on a dive video which has many start/stops breaking time code and final cut wants to create a new video for each one, how do I stop it from doing that?  I want just one long video, timecode breaks and all.

You can control whether start/stop indicators create individual media files by selecting or deselecting the “Create new clip on Start/Stop” checkbox in the Clip Settings tab of the Log and Capture window.
In the General tab of the User Preferences window, the option you choose from the “On timecode break” pop-up menu determines how timecode breaks affect capture, but the Warn After Capture option is disregarded to avoid capturing media files that contain breaks in the middle of an MPEG-2 GOP.
To choose how Final Cut Pro handles start/stop detection when capturing HDV footage
If you have not already done so, choose Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup, choose HDV from the Format pop-up menu, and then choose an Easy Setup from the Use pop-up menu.
Choose File > Log and Capture (or press Command-8), then click Clip Settings.
Select or deselect the “Create new clip on Start/Stop” checkbox to turn start/stop detection on or off:
Start/Stop detection on: When the checkbox is selected, a new media file and corresponding clip are created each time Final Cut Pro detects start/stop indicators in the incoming HDV stream.
Start/Stop detection off: When the checkbox is deselected, one continuous media file and corresponding clip are created, and start/stop indicators are ignored.
Note: The option to turn off start/stop detection is not available when capturing footage shot on a JVC HDV camcorder because the nature of the MPEG-2 stream requires creation of a new media file at each start/stop indicator.

  • How do I follow a tutorial while capturing?

I know its a stupid question, and there are far more serious problems, but im trying to follow a web tutorial and capture at the same time on final cut pro, and I just can't seem to do both at the same time.
My buddie swears thats just the way it is, he says its like that on adobe premiere as well; that while you capture you cant do anything else, you cant even click on the desktop , or the capturing will stop.
but, in my experience using IMOVIE i can even browse the internet while capturing footage from a DV tape. I've followed and read the news while capturing an entire DV tape with imovie.
i find it difficult to read the tutorial on capturing while, lol, I'm capturing!
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Trying to do anything else on your computer while
you're capturing is not a good idea. Amoung other
things you risk dropping frames or even crashing so
I'd say the same things others are saying here which
is use one computer to capture and if you must surf
the net while capturing use another computer.
It's not a good idea now. For years I've done all kinds of work while capturing, such as photoshop, emailing, surfing, etc. No problems at all. I repeat. No problems at all. No dropped frames. No crashes. Then I installed FCP 5. Now my multitasking is gone and the cost to my business of me sitting here editing has been increased because the machine can only do one thing at a time. I know I must be missing something here.

  • Problem capturing footage

While capturing footage, I have received an error message called a "debug event" that includes a path to a particular file and the code cpp-94.
The program freezes and then I lose everything.  I cannot capture any footage- so basically I am unable to use CS5.  I used the trial version for a few weeks- but now that I have installed the "real version" I have been stuck ever since.  Can anyone tell me what is going wrong?

  • Capturing some DV footage from camera, timecode break

When I'm capturing video from my DV tape on my camera it always back steps for a long while because of some timecode break. is there a way to just capture it ignoring the timecode break? Time code isn't so important. It's just some video from my parents vacation that I want to slap on to a dvd.

is there a way to just capture it ignoring the timecode break?<<</div>
In FCP's preferences, set to create a new clip on Timecode break. Also set FCP's Device Control to "Non-Controllable Device" and use 'Capture Now.' Sometimes timecode breaks can be due to dirty heads in the playback device; try cleaning or having it serviced.
It's just some video from my parents vacation that I want to slap on to a dvd<<</div>
The quickest way to do that is to record directly from the source tape to a DVD recorder.

  • Capturing footage without timecodes

I love editing with Final Cut Express, but capturing footage is a nightmare. The program keeps trying to locate timecode breaks on my Hi8 tape during capture, which results in me losing three to four seconds of footage from the beginning of each scene.
Is there a way to tell FCE to disregard timecodes? When I capture family movies, I'd like the importing to be as seamless as possible -- much like when capturing in iMovie. (I do know that I can capture in iMovie and edit in FCE, but if it's possible, I'd like to do all my work in FCE without relying on iMovie.)
Thanks to anyone who can help!

Thank you both very much for your quick replies! I tried switching my Easy Setup as suggested, and now my capturing seems to be working smoothly. Awesome!
Thanks so much again -- I really appreciate it!

  • Capturing issues looking for timecode break

I am using FCP 4.5 and capturing onto a G raid Sata drive. But the capture process is very fragmented it keeps taking in about 20 seperate clips per 40 min role of DV. The message that comes up in the capture window says it is searching for timecode break but there is not one on the tape.
    Any tips?

Strange maybe, but as a shooter, I've seen material show 'timecode' breaks on footage I've shot, knowing there was no break in tape....occasionally within a rolling shot. (JVC GY-DV500 camera)
Could be the camera not laying a strong timecode signal...I've read that Canon's are notorious for this, though I've not experienced it myself...yet.
Turning the camera off/on is very likely a culprit here. Not to be condescending, but here are my camera procedures to eliminate timecode breaks...not that you don't know this already...
    - Get in the habit of always rolling 5 sec. of tape before action starts and 5 seconds of tape after action ends.
    - Try not to turn the camera off.
    - Try not to do 'searches' on tapes that are being recorded on.
    - If the camera is turned off, or you need to search back into the tape, make sure you do NOT roll past the end of the last recorded frame...preferable stop a couple of seconds prior to the last recorded frame, and begin recording there.
    - If your camera is capable of generating Bars, try to record 10 seconds of bars in between scene or location changes.
-if you have to pop the tape out of the camera at any point, follow the above listed practice of cueing up to a couple of seconds prior to the last recorded frame, and start recording there to pick up continous timecode.
-Really, really try not to... (IOW - DON'T) use 'free-run' timecode. It will make editing an absolute nightmare...particularly for NLE's.
not sure what mac os extended means
This is how the drive is initially formatted. Often drives are designed to work with PCs and MACs. If you drive is not formatted Mac OS Extended, you could see abbreviated captures as well...among other problems...
    start/stop detect
This will take a long capture and place markers at the points the camera stopped/started rolling, allowing you to create subclips from the original long clip...Main Menu/Mark/DV Start/Stop Detect...the camera must have an internal clock running, and not all cameras support this feature.
    Hope that helps,
    Kevan

  • Timecode break warnings upon capture

Hello - I keep getting this msg. "WARNING: A timecode break was encountered while capturing 'name of clip'..." I had tried changing the setting to 'make new clip', instead of 'abort', and that didn't work, as I had a bunch of extremely short (1 frame) clips. The tape is rather old and 'worn looking' when playing - is it possible that could be problem? I am using Capture Now, and importing through the 'DateVideo' 'dazzle'. Thank you!

Hey, thanks - this did work, even though I still get the msg. after Capturing, but it does capture all of the content that I want/need - thanks!

  • Bizarre FCPro Capturing Problem w/ Timecode Breaks

OK I've never seen this happen before - I am using a G5 with OSX 10.4.2 and FCPro 5.0. I am trying to capture from a DV tape with loads of timecode breaks, currently it is set to Warn After Capture on timecode breaks. For some reason when I capture I am having a problem - the entire tape will capture, but Final Cut will only be able to access a small part of it, stopping when a timecode break occurs. Like, I will capture one hour, and the whole hour will capture, but when I play it back it will only be two minutes. However, the whole clip will be on the hard drive - when I access the media file, it will be an hour long, and I can play the whole hour in quicktime. But when I play it in FC, it will be two minutes, or four or whatever. I've tried everything - importing the file back into Final Cut, changing the settings like nuts, I still cannot get Final Cut to access the rest of the footage. Yes, I've tried "Make New Clip" on timecode break, and that works, but I need to find a solution to this problem.
It doesn't happen all the time, either. Sometimes when I capture it will stop after the first timecode break, other times it will stop after several. Sometimes I get four seconds, sometimes it's fifteen minutes, sometimes the whole tape will capture without any error. I don't understand this problem - I've captured from this camera before to Final Cut Pro 4 and Final Cut Express on G4s and G5s and never seen anything like this. I hope I've explained the problem well enough. I would really appreciate any help anyone could offer.
    G4/G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The camera is a JVC GY-DV500 MiniDV camera. I've captured to both internal and external drives - actually just yesterday this same problem cropped up on a different computer running OSX 10.3.9 with the same version of FC, leading me to believe it's a problem in Final Cut.
As for the timecode breaks, I'm not really sure to be honest with you. I don't shoot the video, I only edit it. With the type of stuff being recorded they have to pause recording frequently, sometimes they only record for a couple of seconds. Perhaps it is a camera setting, I don't know. But I still don't understand how this could create such a problem in Final Cut.
    Thank you.

  • Capturing continuous HDV over timecode breaks

Hello! I hope someone out there can assist me - I've been searching google and doing some trial and error, but cannot find a solution.
I have HDV video that I'm trying to capture into FCP 7. The footage has timecode breaks in it, some longer than others. I'd love to FCP to just gloss over them, ala capturing DV footage, but it seems it cannot.
Re-recording is not an option as the client doesn't want to pay for the additional work. The capture itself is a byproduct of the videographer not remembering to compress live on site.
Thanks for any help you might have!
Additional info - capturing to a FW800 drive, Macbook Pro 2.2 i7 with 16GB ram - HDV coming from Sony HVR 1500
    Thank you!

Can you get your hands on the same make and model camcorder that the footage was shot on?  I know this was suggested in a prior post and you said that you can't get the camera.  But, if you can rent a Sony HVR 1500 (I'm assuming it's a rental), can't you rent the same camera that it was shot in?  It's not uncommon to sometimes have to capture from the same device that was used to shoot the video in the first place.
The drop frame error that you linked does not result from non-continuous time code.
Also, the free run time code setting on the deck affects where it looks for tc source when recording (it doesn't affect tc during playback of a recorded tape).
Based on everything in this forum so far, I'd suggest you go with Michael's suggestion and get a Blackmagic Decklink card (assuming that your computer can accomodate one).  Patching the SD-HDI out of the deck to the SD-HDI input of the Blackmagic Decklink should do the trick.  If you have something with HDMI out on it that can play the tape, you can go with Blackmagic's more affordable Intensity product that has HDMI in.
Plan C would be to rent or buy a HD field recorder and patch the video out of the deck to the video in of the field recorder.  As long as the tape plays, you should be able to get it across.
    Good luck!

  • Capturing with Timecode Breaks Plase Help!!

I am trying to capture different clips in the footage i have on my camcorder but there are timecode breaks. I am not sure how to get the clips i need because everytime i enter the in and out points and then press capture clip it doesnt work just rewinds my camcorder and wont capture. If anyone could tell me how to fix this it would be much appreciated.
    thanks,
    Hunter

    Jennifer
Are the breaks on the tape or is FCE reporting the breaks?
Which capture style are you using, NOW or CLIP?
Have you tried different places on the tape other than the start?
You need at least 3 seconds pre-roll from the start.

  • FCE HD Freezes while capturing HD Footage

i have a mac book pro with an external hard drive that holds 120 Gigs. i have roughly 18 gigs left. i'm currently capturing HD footage for a movie and FCE HD freezes while capturing fairly often. What should i do? Do i need a bigger external hard drive?

Exactly what it says. Because of the nature of the way USB drives work they are not suitable for video applications, particularly as the drive fills up or becomes fragmented. What kind of camera or deck are you using? What works for many situations is to daisy-chain the camera through the drive to the FireWire port. This usually does not work with Canon cameras however.

  • Capturing issues-audio sample rate & locating timecode break

I am a first time FCP user.
I am working on an educational video with hours of DV source tapes.
The source tapes are from a 2R50MC Cannon mini DV camcorder also used as the deck I am capturing from via firewire. My scratch disk is Maxtor III 500GB external drive hooked up via a firewire (I'm realizing the firewire is years old could that be a problem?)
In my first capture test I captured 1 minute of tape by setting in and out points and after completeing the capture I received an error message—"The audio sample rate of one or more of your captured media files does not match the sample rate on your source tape. This may cause the video and audio of these media files to be out of sync. Make sure the audio sample rate of your capture preset matches the sample rate of your tape."
For the past day I have been scouring the user manual, this discussion group and training tapes from Lynda.com and can not resolve this issue. I have determined that the source tape is 12 bit or 32 kHz and yet can not find a way to set up capture preferences to 32 kHz. Is this the problem/resolution? Page 320 of the user manual shows the QuickTime Audio Settings dialog box but I can't find it in FCP or Quicktime. Is this where I make the change to 32kHz?
After doing the first test, I tried again and ran into a new problem—it stopped capturing with the message: Locating timecode break [press esc to abort]. It never seemed to resume capturing and I pressed escape to abort. If I'm reading FCP time code window correctly I received this time code break message within a section I had already captured previously (with the audio sync warning).
I have done several capture tests at different points in the tape and on different tapes all with the same results. I've used the capture clip and capture now buttons. I've tested with drop frame turned on and off. Confirmed my setting of: At timecode break "Make New Clip." Confirmed my Easy Setup as DV-NTSC. My capture preset is DV NTSC 48 kHz. I've turned off and on FCP. Restarted my computer. Restarted my computer with the shift key down and ran permissions.
Any ideas are GREATLY appreciated, T.

I am concerned about available memory when capturing to my hard drive and the babysitting and extra steps involved considering the amount of tape I want to capture...but it does work that's GREAT!
This is always a concern, but in your case I think having the camera and external on the same bus was causing your problem. You may have to capture a little and then transfer, rinse and repeat. Just don't try to do too much at once and let your System Drive get too full, you'll run into other problems there. Slow and steady is the pace!
I shouldn't have stacked my questions since you answered one and Chris answered the other. Don't know how to apply the answered question and who gets the points.
No problem, just mark it answered and divide up the solved and helpful points as you wish. All in all we really don't care too much about the points, but they do make us feel good! Thanks for your desire to use the forums properly.
