Timecode display

I'm planning to take FCExpress. I'm a musician, and I have to mount some musical clips but without any particular demands..
Now, among differences between FCPro and FCExpress, I read, on a web article, that
*Video Capture and Timecode*
*Final Cut Express HD will not display your timecode, ....*
So, I wonder what it exactly means.. Isn't there timecode display in clip and/or canvas display?
How can you make editing without viewing timecode?

  • Audio Timecode Display Options in Bins.

In the project panel, the media start and end for audio clips displays in audio units or milliseconds.
Is there a way to show the embedded timecode?
When you load an audio clip into the source viewer you can see the timecode displayed.
I'm finding it difficult to locate the appropriate wild audio clips to sync with footage.

    Hi,
Thanks for the help! This option displays 00:00 on all files I import. Maybe there is some metadata missing on my audio files... But when I load an audio clip into the source viewer I am able to see embedded timecode that matches corresponding clips.
For example, a file in the project window displays Media start as 01:00:01.598. When I load it into the source viewer the source widow displays it as 00:59:58:00.
I'd just like to save the time and see video timecode in the bins. Thanks again for the help.

  • IMovie HD 6, Imported Camcorder DV with Timecode, Displaying in iMovie

After importing a clip from my camcorder into iMovie HD 6.0.1 via FireWire, "Clip Info" does show the time and date the clip was recorded (the time according to the camcorder, not the time it was imported into iMovie).
(Previous posts suggested that the time/date info would not be sent along FW, but in my case it is.)
    Camcorder is Sony DCR-HC42.
Displaying relative date/time information, like is offered in many plugins, is not an option; I want to see the date/time the clip was recorded on the camcorder.
So now I want that information to be super-imposed on my clips for the first few seconds of each clip. What setting or plugin do I need to make this happen?

Timecodes can be added as an effect.

  • No Timecode display on dvd burned

    Hi,
with some of my project (most of all in fact), the timecode is not shown in the player. It depends of the player because sometimes, it's present. If I try a check disc or a simple project (1 menu and 1 track) in that player, the timecode is displayed.
What, in DVD Studio Pro, can affect that? Is it the media that I use (Taiyoyuden)? Or the compression technique (I compress with an hardware Optibase card or with Compressor)?
    Thanks,
    Matt

try looking at the DVD player settings, it can switch between chapter and track display

  • Caption inconsistencies and timecode display is non-drop only?

In QT 7 Pro, the time display has an option for "Timecode: Non-Drop-Frame". I'm pretty sure that I have tried multiple videos that are drop frame, but the only option in the display is non-drop.
Also, a lot of caption files that I add seem to drift, and are late by about 2 seconds after 45 minutes of video. These same video/caption files line up perfectly in other systems.
Just wondering if anyone can help me understand what might be happening.

I am using the easy setup. FCP does differentiate between DF and NDF with the semi-colon and colon respectively. I have tried manually putting in a semi-colon, but it still makes it NDF. I currently log all of the clips. Then I control click on the media end time of each clip and it gives you an option to make it DF or NDF. But when I do this it changes the media out times due to the conversion. Also, if I go to batch capture my clips and I don't have a tape in my deck yet, I will receive a warning saying something like "You are about to capture drop frame media from a device currently detecting a non-drop frame media source." I don't get this warning if I already have the tape in because once the tape is in it sees it as DF.

  • Timecode display during RAM preview playback?

I can't seem to find any timecode that reports back the CT while doing a RAM preview.   Am I correct in assuming this does not exist?
As a workaround I added a solid layer and added the timecode effect to it.  Seems weird there is no playback timecode reported in any windows during a RAM preview so I must be missing something.
    Thanks,
    Cliff

To get a display of timecode in the comp window that's what you need to do. The time indicator in the timeline does not advance in a ram preview. The info palette only shows the fps if enabled.
The timecode effect applied to another layer or an expression from the expression library for timecode applied to an empty text layer will do the trick.

  • Timecode display in QT 7.4.5 not showing

I have a Macbook Pro running 10.5.2 and I wanted to take a look at the timecode feature that was introduced in QT 7.1.6.
I have plenty of DV clips I have imported in iMovie and Foottrack (cataloging app) over the years but all I see is the Standard and Frames options in the lower left corner of Quicktime player. I have checked the box in Preferences to show timecode when available but no luck.
    I have QT 7.4.5 installed.
Can anyone help me? Do I have to stripe the whole tape before hand to get it to show or would multiple DV start and stops on a tape be read as well?
A link to an appropriate file would work.
    Thanks

QT Player 6 allowed you to see the DV timecode of the very first frame of a DV file (iMovie 1-6 do the same).
But for some strange reason this feature was removed from QT 7.
Ideally, I'd like to see the timecode of DV clips frame-by-frame. And sometimes it would be nice to see all the related embedded info (white balance, gain, shutterspeed etc) in the timecode:

  • Premiere CS5 *only* displays Frames timecode.

I'm using Premiere CS5 to edit some screen capture footage from Camtasia. As such, it has no embedded time code. Once in Premiere, all the displays only show 'Frames'. Normally I can Ctrl+click on the timecode displays to change their format, but in CS5 it simply doesnt work and I'm stuck. Is there a way to force Premeiere to show regular timecode? I need to know what time I'm at, not what frame I'm on. Been using Premeiere since 2.0, so I am adept at the program, this issue is just driving me nuts. Thansk--

And just so you know I'm not crazy--

  • Capturing HDV footage with incorrect timecode

Rookie mistake. I started shooting a new project on my brand new canon xh-a1s, and in the excitement I forgot to stripe my first few tapes. And it being a film project I've been constantly using the playback to look at the takes I just did. So what's happened is I don't have a nice clean 0;00;00 to 1;04;00 timecode on all the tapes, rather there are frequent spots on the tapes when it's started a new timecode at 0;00;00. So when I capture my footage into premiere pro cs3, it gets confused and either drastically unsyncs the audio or repeats the same 4 seconds of sound through the whole clip.
Oddly enough when you play the captured footage outside of premiere, in windows media player say, it looks and sounds fine. But premiere chokes on it everytime I import it or capture it.
Right now I've managed to capture successfuly going clip at a time with the capture now function, and staring at the timecode waiting to hit stop just when it gets to a new timecode. Sometimes I hit stop on time and it captures cleanly, sometimes I don't and it doesn't sync or skips the audio. But obviously trying to go through 8 hours of footage this way is an arguous, unreliable, and incredibly time consuming process. Logging clips doesn't work either because it never seems to stop the capture on time to save the clip.
Does anyone have any suggestions as how I can get the audio into premiere properly without doing what I'm doing now?

...or, always look at the timecode display in the viewfinder or the LCD before you press REC.  The nice display will ALWAYS indicate when you've reset the timecode. If the display is 00:00:00.00 or similar and you are NOT the very beginning of the tape, pressing record will start a new time code sequence everytime.
If you have END SEARCH, use it.  this will usually work as long as you haven't removed the tape.  Either way, rewinding the tape until a non-zero timecode appears and then pressing REC works.  The camera will increment the timecode from that value..
I'm not at my editting station, but I seem to remember that PPPro has a capture setting that will cause it to ignore timecode breaks--you then edit out the rough section at each break when editing.  Unless you're going to do something clever like recapturing HDV after capturing SD, you're not going to use the timecode anyway.
Then in the future, always look at the timecode display before you press REC.  There is really no reason to stripe if you always remember this.

  • Fx TimeCode In Premiere CS5.5 - Non Linear Evolution (Jumps Every 24 Frames) ?

Hi, Can anyone please provide some feedback on an issue I am having with an fx TimeCode that I have placed in a video clip of a sporting event? I have set the TimeCode to SMPTE format with the source set as either "Cip" or "Generate" and the TimeCode display is set to 25. The timer starts at a specific point in the event and runs through just past the end of the event. If I advance the video one frame at a time the timer follows this in a linear manner with increments of 0.01 seconds per frame for 24 frames then the timer jumps by 0.76 seconds when advancing to the 25th frame. It seems as though the timer is compensating every 25th frame to keep in synchrony with real time in the video. My thought were that the timer should advance by 0.04 seconds per frame for a 25fps video in true linear manner without these large incremental jumps? Is there any setting I can use to get the time to advance in linear manner by 0.04 secs per frame instead of 0.01 secs per frame for the 1st 24 frames followed by this large jump of 0.76 secs on the 25th frame? I am trying to extract timings at the granularity of hundredths of a second so any help in resolving this would be most appreciated. Rgds

I think that I might not be interpreting the SMPTE timecode format correctly, my original understanding was that it was in the format of:
    hh:mm:ss:hundredths of seconds
however, I am now thinking it is in the format of:
    hh:mm:ss:frames
So, the timecode is counting time in the granularity of seconds and the figures to the right of the seconds after the colon is the framce count in that second. On the assumption that this is correct then an SMPTE timecode is not what I need. I need a timer that can count in one hundredths of a second.
Any suggestions for inserting a timer to count in one hundredths of a second most appreciated.
    Rgds

  • Don't get timecode via firewire from FCP to Panasonic HVX200A for DV.

When I try to 'print to video' or just play the timeline for a NTSC DV sequence, I get video and audio on my Panasonic HVX200A camera, but no timecode. The timecode display on the camera doesn't move and when I 'Log and Capture' the video that I just recorded, the 'Log and Capture' just sits there displaying 'Waiting for timecode' while the tape is actually playing in the camera.
The camera setting for '1394 TC REGEN' is set to 'on' which means that the camera will get the timecode from the firewire instead of creating the timecode itself.
The 'no timecode' problem is the same for output to tape or P2 cards.
I am using the DV-NTSC Easy Setup for device control, etc.
But.... When I output an HD (720P/60P) sequence from the timeline to the P2 cards, the timecode is immediately visible on the camera's timecode counter. I can even send the DV sequence above to the HD P2 setup and the DV timecode will show up.
How can I get FCP 7 to send the timecode via firewire to my HVX200A using a DV recording setup options on the camera?

But I can send the time code from both a 720P/24P sequence and a NTSC DV sequence using the 720P/60P FCP video playback setup to the Panasonic HVX200A using the camera recording setup 720P/60P.
If I change the starting timecode for my active sequence from 01:00:00:00 to 03:00:00:00 and press play, the timecode sent to the camera displays the correct hh:mm:ss:ff starting with 03.
So you can output timecode using HD settings. And you can send a DV sequence to the same HD settings and see that DV timecode. Although, the DV frame is surrounded by black on all sides.
But why can't you output a DV timecode to a DV setup HVX200A?
Also, if you wanted to create a DV tape using the filters that burn a visual timecode to the tape, don't you need to be sure that you can send the timecode with video so that they are in sync when recorded? You wouldn't want the camcorder to provide timecode that doesn't exactly match the burned to image timecode?

  • Timecode error in batch capture

I've searched this problem but still haven't found an answer. When I batch capture, I get a "Timecode error" and on about half the clips I logged I have to cancel out of the capture. some work, some don't. It's not a problem with the pre-roll at the beginning of the tape; I left plenty of room when I set the in/out, and the first clip is now captured anyway so it can't be the start of the tape. But every time I try to capture the rest of the clips, I get this error with some if not most of them. I've changed the setting to NDF and it doesn't seem to make a difference. I'm only capturing in the middle of the tape now, so the beginning and end have lots of space. Please someone tell me how to stop this! I just upgraded to Pro and it's my first attempt at batch capture, so I'm pretty disappointed that it's such a waste of time.
    Thanks, smart people!

Great, now you made Studio go and have some fun on the weekend.
X is right eliminate things one at a time.
You didn't let us know what drive you are capturing to.
If capturing from the camera doesn't work, it may be that you are experiencing the "multiple FW devices on one FW bus issue" in which case you might try looping the camera or deck through the drive, works for some, but more likely you will need to install another FW bus via the card slot on the laptop.
By the way, this really doesn't sound like a drop/non drop issue, but look at the timecode display of the footage on tape. If the last 2 numbers are preceded by a semicolon,,, it's drop frame.
Now, I believe someone mentioned the US Open!

  • How do I create a movie with the timecode visually embedded in it?

I have to create a quick demo movie for a client to review. I would like to embed the timecode visually in the corner so the client can review the movie on a DVD and then make comments relative to the displayed timecode. Is there a way to do this?

You can try this free filter FCE Timecode Display. It has a few more options than the standard Video/Timecode Reader.
Make sure to set Type = Absolute Timecode (default); probably you don't need IN/OUT values (uncheck it), but only Current Timecode (default).
If you logged the reel name you can also display that (check the Reel Name option).
You can position it anywhere on the screen and define font type, size, and color, and a (semi)transparent band beneath the text.

  • What's the deal with Drop-Frame / Non-Drop-Frame Timecode?

    I'm having trouble with 30fps Drop-Frame and 30fps Non-Drop-Frame timecode formats! I thought 29.97fps means 30fps Drop-Frame, but now I'm all confused.
I'm working with DSLR footage filmed with a frame rate of 29.97. For example, this one clip is listed as (in Project panel)
    Media Start: 11:16:11:23
    Media End: 11:22:42:22
    Duration: 00:06:31:00
    Frame Rate: 29.97fps
If I open this clip directly in Source Monitor, the timecode display (yellow, on lower left corner) says 11:16:11:23 at the beginning and 11:22:42:23 at the end. OK. But if I right-click on the timecode display, the pop-up indicates "Non-Drop-Frame"(!!). If I manually change that to "Drop-Frame", the start and end timecode would become 11:16:52:11 and 11:23:23:23, and the duration display (white, on lower right corner) becomes 6:31:12.
Now I create a new sequence of 1080p30, which has a 29.97fps time base. I right-click the yellow timecode display on the upper left corner of the Timeline, it says "30fps Drop-Frame". I drag the said clip onto the sequence. It occupies a length of 6:31:12. If I double-click the clip to open it in Source Monitor, now the Source Monitor timecode display indicates "Drop-Frame", and the start/end timecodes are 11:16:52:11 and 11:23:23:23. Huh??
Now I apply the "Timecode" effect on the clip. The timecode burn-in says 11:16:51:11 at the first frame and 11:23:23:22 at the last frame. I then go to the Effect Controls tab and look at the Timecode effect. It says
    Format: SMPTE
    Timecode Source: Media
    Time Display: 30 Drop Frame
Just playing around, I switch "Timecode Source" to "Clip" - now the timecode burn-in goes from 00:00:00:00 to 00:06:31:11 - and then I switch it back to "Media". Now the Effect Controls tab says:
    Format: SMPTE
    Timecode Source: Media
    Time Display: 30 Non-Drop Frame
And the timecode burn-in says 11:16:11:23 at the first frame and 11:22:42:22 at the last frame!
    HUH??
Just for kickers, I switch "Timecode Source" to "Clip" again... Now "Time Display" stays on "30 Non-Drop Frame", and the timecode burn-in goes from 00:00:00:00 to 00:06:30:29.
What's the REAL length of this clip? Is it drop-frame or non-drop-frame? What are the REAL timecodes for it?
Also in a general sense, since I can change the "Time Display" field in the Timecode effect at any time, and change the Timecode display format of the Timeline at any time... How do I avoid creating mismatching timecodes??
Thanks in advance for any clarification!!

So obviously, only one of them could be "correct" in terms of reflecting what actually happened. The other one is slightly sped-up or slowed-down. You might say "oh that's a tiny difference, it doesn't matter".
Zooropa75, just for matter of clarification I want to make sure you understand that no matter which you use, it won't actually speed up or slow down your video. TC, wether it is non-drop or drop, is only a counting system. For that reason, it doesn't even matter which you use to reference edits, so long as everyone editing uses the same TC basis.
If you want actual time accurate TC, as was already mentioned, use drop-frame.
I'm going to kill two birds here. The "drag clip to new sequence button" action I was referring to in my earlier post is dragging your clip to the icon seen below. It should create a timeline using your videos format.
Also, remember I recommended looking in the manuel for "actual" time used? You can see below a snapshot I took from your cameras manuel. You're not shooting in whole numbers for anything unless you're using the 50hz system and shooting at 50p. That is the ONLY exception. ...and this is good for everyone to remember. Very few US digital cameras shoot frames per second in whole numbers. If it says you're shooting in 24p, 30p, 60p, etc. ad nauseum, you can bet your biscuits it's actually the multi-decimal NTCS counterparts like you see below And that should be your final answer. *chuckle*
