Timecode w/ FCE

if i edit together a piece in final cut express & hand it over to an editor using final cut pro will they be able to read my in & out timecode marks based on the source material timecode? ie the original tapes they'll be working off of.
thanks,
kjr55

So my editor would see my ins & outs of my rough edit on his tc display?
Does FCE allow me to print out an edit list, ie. ins & outs?

  • Canon HV20 and Timecode for FCE

    Hi,
I noticed in the FCE manual it states: Important: Some HDV camcorders do not record timecode, so you won’t be able to precisely recapture any clips if you delete the corresponding media files."
Does the HV20 record a FCE compatible timecode in both HDV and DV modes? (I searched the forum and didn't find this issue).
    Thanks,
    Mace

You might want to google that. Or ask on the production forum. Or a DV/HDV forum. Or look in the camera's manual. This forum probably has a small base of HV20 users.
The manual is somewhat misleading. FCE converts HDV to the Apple Intermediate Codec when it captures and the timecode is lost in the conversion process.

  • FCE Timecode

Is it possible to bring in SPBeta w/ timecode using FCE and have the SPBeta timecode tagged to the import through FCE?
Mahalo for any clarity on this.

No. You need RS422 control to get the TC from a Beta deck I believe. FCE doesn't support that.

  • Do i lose quality from iMovie to FCE HD

Sorry to clarify that last post i am asking if i connect my camcorder to my laptop and then import the footage to iMovie and then import the clips into FCE HD if i would lose any quality from the video
    thanks alot,
    Hunter

    Hunter,
There is no loss of picture quality but there are some limitations:
    - you must render all media to convert it to FCE compatible format
    - you can't "recapture" any media that originated in iMovie
    - don't throw away the iMovie media files, you may need them again
    - iMovie sound effects, titles, transitions, effects or iDVD chapter markers won't import.
I believe if you have a timecode jump FCE will create a new file, but not sure. I recall reading something about this and can't quickly find it.

  • Log and Capturing without Timecode?

I want to play video from my television, to my camera, to my computer. I see the video on the computer screen but when i try to log andcapture it is looking for timecode and there is none. how can one capture this footage?
    thanks!!!

Since the video feed contains no timecode, in FCE's capture settings, you must select "DV Convert" and then use Capture Now.

  • Capturing Video w/timecode while shooting

If I hook up my Mini DV camera to my Powermac G5 via firewire 400, is there anyway I can record video to tape and record it to my computer with timecode at the same time in Final Cut Pro? If not, then is there a program out there for Mac that will let me do this?

Timecode is always recorded by FCP during capture from your camera.
By default it is not displayed within the video frame, unless you choose to do so by adding the bundled Timecode Reader or my free filter FCE Timecode Display to the captured clips.
Both filters allow to display and burn the source timecode; the FCE Timecode Display provides a degree of additional flexibility in terms of formatting and displayed information.

  • Audo-Video out of snyc when downloaded

I'm having a problem after downloading video footage from my camera, the audio is in snyc on the DV tape & its come in snyc when I download into imovie but not in Final Cut? I just started having this problem within the last few weeks & have never experience it before. I don't remember doing anything differently than I have in the past, would appreciate any help.

Further to Ian's comments, iMovie captures material differently than FCE does. miniDV cams record DV Stream to the tape and iMovie captures the DV Stream directly from the camera. FCE on the other hand does not capture DV Stream, it captures DV. They are not identical. In addition, iMovie ignores the timecode but FCE requires it. As a consequence of all this, whether the actual tape was recorded at 12 bit or 16 bit audio won't make any difference to iMovie, but it will to FCE. Check your camera settings - what is the audio setting? Do you know what it was when you recorded the tape?
Second, how are you getting the material from iMovie to FCE? Are you just importing the iMovie project into FCE? What was the Easy Setup you had in FCE at the time you imported your iMovie project & created a sequence to put it in? Did you render the audio after you imported the iMovie project?
What versions of iMovie, FCE and QT are you using?

  • Final Cut Express problem w/ Daisy-chained Firewire

I have recently encountered an issue with attempting to capture video from a DV camera daisy-chained through drive on a 24" iMac.
I have two drives attached to my 24" iMac - a La Cie d2 Extreme by FW800 and a generic FW400 drive. I would like to run my camera daisy-chained from either drive (so the drives themselves are plugged directly into the iMac). However, when I do this it tells me there is no video (all the VTR functions work though). If I unplug the FW400 disk from the iMac, daisy chain it off the FW800 drive, and attach the camera directly to the FW400 port, it captures nicely.
Funny thing is that iMovie will capture daisy-chained without a problem.
Any fix for this? If this is expected behavior (it shouldn't be -- even my old Linux box didn't have this issue), will I experience similar problems if I get a FW hub? If this is not expected behavior, is there a fix?
I have another problem in that sometimes FCE stops tracking the timecode. What happens is that at some point, FCE stops capture and jogs the video saying it can't find the time code -- then it gives up and tells me it can't capture because there's no video. I can't even rewind and capture the chunk of tape I captured earlier. I have to quite FCE and try again.
Again, iMovie doesn't have this problem (though, if I understand correctly, it doesn't deal with the timecodes like FCE does). Any fix for this one?

I was just a bit confused with the capture bug. The same camera has been used dasiy-chained off the same physical drives under Windows and Linux without a problem -- not even a single dropped frame. iMovie can capture in the daisy-chained configuration, only FCE (3.5.1) has a problem (finds camera, VTR works, says there's no video).
The TC issue has nothing to do with the timecode on the tape -- that's fine and without any gaps at all. If you try to capture the same tape, the error will occur at a different spot each time. Further, if you rewind the tape a little and restart FCE and start the capture again, it will capture right through the part where it had a problem and go for a random amount of time before it hits another error. It's absolutely necessasry to restart FCE, because after it encounter's the timecode error once, FCE cannot capture any mode video (even from where it's captured before), though the VTR functions still work.
I've been playing around a bit, and it appears that FCE only has timecode errors when capturing to external hard disks. If you shutdown the external disks and set the capture scratch to the internal HD it works fine.
If you use any application other than FCE to capture from DV, the daisy-chain configuration works. Only FCE has an issue with this configuration.
I don't think it has anything to do with the camera, either. It's not only an approved camera, but I've borrowed a couple of others of different brands and noted the same problems.

  • Pluggin for Multi-Cam?

I know that one of the features FCP boasts is multi-cam editing which FCHD doesn't support, But are they any companies out there who can provide a pluggin to add this feature to FCHD?
    Any help welcomed
    Andy T

When glibly saying that most people would never notice the difference - YOU are one of the few who probably will!
You might need to use the original camera timecode which FCE will not do.
However, Simon and Piero developed a filter which can be applied to a clip to reveal the original TC.
It costs the princely sum of NOTHING and can be downloaded here:-

  • Any timecode window plug-ins for older versions of FCE?

Hey - thanks in advance for any help on this.
I use FCE version 1 on a G4 running OSX 2.9. The most commonly recommended Free timecode plugin doesn't seem to work in my version. I install it, but it's not visible in the bins where it's supposed to show up. I tried saving it as a unix and/or unicode and all that other gobbly gook that you're supposed to try if it doesn't install properly. Anyhow, none of that helped. I can only assume it's because of my earlier version of FCE or my OSX.
I need a timecode window visible on my finished project because I'm sending to a closed captioning place. Thanks again.

  • In FCE can I use timecode to be displayed on the movie frame?

    Hi,
I would like to know if FCE has the capability of displaying a timecode such as 00:00:00 om the frame or another words on the movie say in the right lower section of the picture? Also can it be set to zero at any point I choose to show a certain event ie...space shuttle blasting off into space? Is that function built into FCE or do I need a plug-in? If so where do I get it from? Any help would be appreciated as this is frustrating for me trying to find a program that will do what I want it to without going to the FCP version. I want to keep my costs down. Thanks
    WizardHunt

Which version of FCE are you using ? I could test it only with FCE 3.0, 3.5. I learned that some older versions have different filter support, that is not compatible with the current one. But I cannot test them since I don't have them...
Otherwise, if your version is compatible, it's possible that the downloaded text file (the filter is a text file) does not have the correct "settings", has described in my Plugin Installation page. Basically you must make sure that Line Breaks are "Unix" and Encoding is "Unicode (UTF-8, no BOM)", otherwise FCE doesn't recognize it as a filter. To check/fix them unfortunately TextEdit doesn't help, but you may use the free TextWrangler.
If you downloaded the .zip file these settings are already correct, while if you download the pure text file they might have been modified during download.

  • FCE - LOCATING TIMECODE BREAK - Why? Help please

    Hello!
I'm trying to capture a video from camera miniDV.
I select "CAPTURE NOW" but after few seconds (when a scene changes), appears this error :
    LOCATING TIMECODE BREAK

    My settings are these :
    http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/3125/schermata20100426a11502.png
    Please help me...
    Thanks bye

Timecode breaks could be caused by:
    1. Actual timecode breaks on the tape.
    2. Dirty heads in the playback system.
    3. Bad Firewire cable.
    4. Capturing to a USB hard drive
    5. Capturing to an improperly formatted hard drive
    6. Capturing while an anti-virus program is running
If you're using Capture Now, try setting FCP's Device Control to Non-Controllable Device.

  • Capturing live footage and FCE is trying to locate timecode breaks

    Hey,
I am using my FCE to capture live footage from each event that I have. I recently started to have a problem with FCE trying to locate time code breaks in the capture, which pauses the capture each time which is footage that I can't get back.
Is there some way to turn that off? I have been forced to use iMovie recently because of this problem but I really need to figure out why this problem would all of the sudden start to appear. Like I said it has worked fine for over a year and now all of the sudden it no longer works.
Please let me know your suggestions.
    Thanks

There are only two DV Converter presets in the list. I don't where thelaw3 is so I don't know how your converter box is set up so I can't tell which you should select. It's either PAL or NTSC. You need to read the manual for your converter box and look through the FCE manual.

  • Can't Export from FCE to QuickTime Movie w/o recompression

I have problems with choosing the correct settings for export of a FCE video clip to QuickTime Movie. I want the best possible quality (without recompression).
    In the manual it says:
"Exporting a Self-Contained Movie Without Recompressing the Media
If you choose to export a self-contained movie, you have the option to not recompress the media in your clip or sequence. If you deselect the Recompress All Frames option and choose Current Settings from the Setting pop-up menu, Final Cut Express simply copies frames from existing media files into the new file with no recompression."
I can't find that option in FCE 4.01 - is it a mistake in the manual? My source media was captured from miniDV tape and the captured media file has the following formate:
Codec: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, Linear PCM, Timecode
    Color profile: SD (6-1-6)
    Total bit rate: 29,794
My exported file has this format:
    Dimensions: 720 x 480
    Codec: Linear PCM, H.264
    Color Profile: SD (6-1-6)
    Audio Channels: 2
    Total bit rate: 2,151
I have seen this question in the FCE archive and people simply say there is no recompression in FCE Export to QT Movie, but clearly there is since I see the H.264 codec listed in my output file and the bit-rate is a about 1/14th the rate of the original source material. The output file size is also much smaller. What gives. How can I get an unrecompressed file out of FCE so I can send it to a coworker for futher editing with his FCE.

Does anyone else have anything to add to this thread. I'm, sure I'm using Export to QuickTime Movie and not using QuickTime Conversion and from the file specifications I've given above, it is clear that a 14:1 compression took place.

    Double check:
There are only three options in the QuickTime Movie export window.
    1. Include: The Audio and Video, Audio Only or Video Only.
    2. Markers: Select whateve you want or don't want.
    3. The Make Movie Self-Contained selection check box.
    Is this what  you see?
The export will mirror the Sequence or selected part of the Sequence.
