Timecodes Missing on Captured Clips?

After capturing DV clips, FCE refuses to show the timecode information. The FCE Browser window won't show the Media Start or End timecodes. Cntrl-click on the browser headings refuses to allow switching to logging vs standard view. The camcorder (Sony TRV9) is in the Apple approved list, and controls fine from the FCE capture window: even allowing specifying timecode start and end for the clip: then doing the clip capture at the correct times. captured video and audio are fine. But Edit-Item Properties on a captured clip in the Browser shows only format information: no tab for timecode data. Yet when I installed the i5m video filter to overlay timecode data on top of a video clip: it shows up correctly in the Viewer window: the timecode data is clearly in the clip file, but FCE refuses access to it! Tried trashing prefs, reinstalling FCE, using a different user account, rebooting and restarting camera, changing from NTSC firewire to firewire basic etc. OS 10.4.3 and FCE 3.0.1 are latest version of everything as of 12/19/05. Anyone else run into this?

Tom: thanks: my confusion came from the Final Cut Express Help pdf file, but evidently its in error, and must be confusing FCP with FCE. I had even called Apple User Support and they thought the timecodes should show, but indicated that sometimes the FCE documenation confuses features that are only in FCP.
thanks for the quick response!

  • Batch List: How to capture clips inc info, from disk instead of tape

We have a client's edit log on Excel, including reel no, in/out, scene, description, log note etc. Usually we import this batch list to FCP, then batch capture from DVCAM tapes, so all clips have all their info - great.
In this case, the material is already digitised and the client has logged from DVDs burned with timecode from the digitised material being placed in FCP sequencecs with timecode generator filter.
Is there a way to 'batch capture' clips from the digitised material, so that we keep all the client logging info, as we would if we were capturing from tape?

Shane has got it right - we want to automatically build a sequence using that batch list. Or somehow have FCP make new clips or subclips from already captured footage... so if your verdict is right Shane, looks like we may have to go the manual route...
although - just occurred to me - for each clip, I could go to the digitised source sequence, duplicate it, open copy in timeline, enter clip's in and out tc in the viewer - and that will give me a copy of each clip as a sequence - rename that sequence as per the clip, and we're done.
But it's still of course more laborious than batch capture from tape; this is a concern going forward as we are switching to XDCAM EX, so of course the route to enable this client-edit-logging ( http://www.creationvideo.co.uk/info/timecode/ ) that we've always offered clients is no longer valid as the material is already online....
    Any suggestions still welcome!

  • Batch capture clips from existing file?

    Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out if there's an easy way to capture a bunch of clips from an existing video file on my computer (.mov, .avi, etc).  Or to put it another way, I want to automatically extract specific short clips out of a larger video file using a list of timecodes.  Is this something I can do with FCE HD, or a free program?
    Thanks so much!!!
    Claire

Quicktime Pro lets you trim and save the trimmed clip by time, but not by timecode.  Just move the in and out sliders on the timeline to the place you want to start and stop, then Save as ...
You can achieve the end result easier & quicker by importing the source clip into FCE and using the VIewer to set IN and OUT points for the various segments you want to use.  It's quicker than using QT Pro because you can do all the work in FCE and avoid having to name & save each and every little clip you would create in QT Pro, and then have to import them all into FCE.  Doing it in FCE also saves the disk space that the QT Pro clips would take up.
Also, FCE supports timecode directly, with one little gotcha.  In FCE, the starting timecode of source media clips is defaulted to 00:00:00;00 and this may not be the actual starting timecode that was recorded by the camera.  (It's a limitation in FCE.)   If the starting timecode in the camera was something other than 00:00:00;00 you could use a timecode calculator to recalculate the timecode positions your friend supplied.  (Google "timecode calculator" and you will find various free & paid calculators.  I'd look for one based on Excel so you could copy/paste all the original timecodes and recalculate all at once.) The Timecode Log Spreadsheet from Ken Stone's website would probably do the trick.

  • Scene Detection On Previously Captured Clip?

Is it possible to split an already captured clip into scenes (much how scene detection works during capture) on a sequence timeline?

For DV, check out DVdate; you can split a DV file both by time-of-day timecode and optically. It will bust the scenes out into individual AVI files--I'm assuming you're using a Windows machine, here.
For HDV, check out HDVSplit. I haven't split an HDV stream after-the-fact, but that capability is supposedly available in HDVSplit.
    Both programs are free.

  • Capturing Clips Unsplit

When I capture clips, FCP is automatically splitting up my b-roll based on when I started and stopped shooting. How do I change my settings so that it will capture as one clip from my in point to my out point?

  • Audio tracks suddenly missing from capture... need help!

Hi! I have been capturing video (with audio) successfully and routinely for months now. Suddenly, though, when I capture video... from the same device, with the same preset... the clips have only 1 Video track, and no Audio tracks. My camera is still recording audio (and I still hear it during the capture), but the audio tracks just aren't there in the resultant clip. It seems to me like FCE has just decided not to capture audio, as if to say "pffft... we don't need that." But why this happened is beyond me!
Even within this same project, I have other clips captured with audio just fine. I didn't even realize it was an option NOT to capture audio. There aren't any settings to that effect in the Capture window... i.e. there's nothing to turn OFF, so I don't know how to turn it back ON! HELP! How do I get audio back on my captured clips? Is there a way to toggle this? How can I possibly be getting video without audio when the preset has already been working for this device?
Things seemed to change once I started using the Voice Over tool. After that, none of my captured clips have audio. Something I did on or around that time changed FCE internally. I combed through the manual but didn't see any leads. They assume if you have the right preset, it'll just work. No mention of disabling audio.
Please help, because I'm just about ready to throw my Mac throw the wall. I even tried reinstalling FCE, just to get it back to the previous state, but it didn't help.
P.S. I also haven't changed anything on my camera that would affect audio. I feel this is just a setting somewhere in FCE that I can't find and don't even know where to look for it...
    Thanks in advance!!

Hi. Where should I look for them? I haven't had much success finding things on my own, so please spell it out for me.
I just find this so odd... it would be one thing for the tracks to be silent or garbled, then I would think this was a cable issue or the camera. But I can't even imagine why the audio tracks would just not be there. If I saw a preference for "Video Only Capture" somewhere, it would make sense.
Anyway, thanks. Please tell me where there's a prefs file, and I'll roast it.

  • Blue screen of death, surprise restarts, and some captured clips distorted, with blocky artifacts!

    Hello,
I've been using my set-up (Premiere Pro 2.0* with Cineform AspectHD) successfully for years, to capture and edit footage. But just recently, my computer has given me the blue screen of death after capturing for about 5-10 minutes or caused my computer to restart in the middle of capturing. I've also noticed that the resulting captured clips are, in some places, distorted and contain blocky artifacts. It isn't a problem with the tape because the footage plays just fine on the camera's preview monitor. I tried re-installing Premiere Pro 2.0 and Cineform AspectHD, but the problem persisted after a successful, but brief capture session (the resulting clips were still distorted and contained blocky artifacts). I have no idea what the problem is! One solution I attempted was to capture on another computer in my house, using the same software. Although I didn't get the blue screen of death or a surprise restart, the captured clips were still distorted and contained blocky artifacts in some spots. Another option I tried, with the second computer, was deselecting the Scene Detect option in the capture dialogue box. As a result, the captured clips are free of distortion and blocky artifacts, but the problem is that the captured clips are too big and very difficult to manage (I shoot a lot because I'm a filmmaker and I'm in the middle of a big project). Why is this happening?!
Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated!
*I'd use a later version of Premiere, but I spent a lot of money on Cineform AspectHD and the version of Cineform I have only works with Premiere Pro 2.0.

I agree with John T. BSOD's are most often caused hardware issues, such as overheating of a component, or a failing, or undersized PSU.
Also, general system drivers can cause failure. Often, those are outlined (though maybe not in really adequate detail) in the Event Viewer's log. In that article, that John T. linked to, there is another link to "Finding Clues." It goes into more detail on using Event Viewer to explore warning, or error messages. If your testing of your system's components and heat, do not yield a weak link, see that one (no pun intended). It is in Reply # 3.
    Good luck,

  • Is it possible to delete the audio of a captured clip permanently?

I know you can drag clips to the timeline without audio, or delete the audio from the timeline.
What I'm asking is: say you captured a bunch of clips with audio tracks that you didn't want, because you forgot to uncheck the audio box.
Is there some way you can delete the audio from the captured clips, without re-capturing everything? I'd like to have them sitting in my browser, without any associated audio.
I know you can change whether audio is present in a logged (but uncaptured clip) using clip settings, but that only works before the clip is captured.

Just think about this for a minute before you launch
yourself off into this realm. The audio doesn't
really take that much space. DV video runs at 3.6
MB/sec 48khz audio runs at 192kB/s. The audio takes
    up nothing.
You're right - it's not worth the effort. It's just a minor annoyance. It would be easier to just recapture all the clips.

  • TS3391 iMovie 11 is not working. I try to open it and it says it is generating thumbnails for one of my previous projects. All the commands are gray. I have to force it to quit. I just want to capture clips to start a new project.

iMovie 11 is not working. I try to open it and it says it is generating thumbnails for one of my previous projects. All the commands are gray. I have to force it to quit. I just want to capture clips to start a new project. I googled the problem and there were discussions about deleting files in various folders and renaming clip extensions. I don't like the solutions I saw there and I am not sure they will work.

Nobody replied so I called Apple. They seemed to think they could fix the problem but I had to agree to pay about $20 first. I told them to put it down as a complaint. I only want to use the software I bought. I can't see that it is my fault it is malfunctioning. I guess I will have to pay. It doesn't seem right.

  • Captured clips are playing back at least TWICE as fast

Hey all- I am capturing HD footage from a JVC Pro HD camera - footage shot at 24P. Everything seems fine with the capture (except for the fact that there is no device control - only capture now), but when I play back the captured clips I hear the audio playing at normal speed but the video is playing back at leat at twice the speed - all actors are in FAST motion. I hear the crew and director speaking, getting ready to shoot as I watch the scene start and speed through and end right as the clip ends.
Any ideas? Is it a setting on the OUTPUT for the camera?
    Thanks for any help.
    Cayce

Neither Final Cut Express nor Final Cut Pro support
720p24 material. You need a product like HDVxDV to
    bring it in.
    Tom-
Thanks for getting back to me last night. You seem to be a master in these parts. I am new here. I am really a director and writer but through my production company I have done a number of things in FCP over the years, always without any problems. That is until the introduction of HD and 24p at which time I sort of started saying to our amazing editor "whatver you say" and clouding over with confusion. After I got your message I went and got FCP 5 from the Apple store in an attempt to keep my friend, whose short we were trying to edit, from crying. Once installed and running we had the same issue as we had in FCE HD - the video - in terms of quality - was captured perfectly, but the clips would play back at almost twice the speed that they should have. I tried virtually every easy set-up that pertained to HD and nothing worked. On a few of them I could get an actual Log and Capture window to come up but when I went to play the material via device control there was no image, althoug I could see TC running. A friend suggested that you have to take the captured HD 24p clip and bring it into the timeline and render it for it to work. Is that true? I tried it to no avail. So, he shot on JVC GY-HD 100 at 24p. I now have FCP 5 HD and am considering buying LUMIERE software that purports to streamline this very issue. Any thoughts or suggestions you may have for me would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much,

  • Captured Clips Not in Browser

Am having a problem capturing video. The clips exist in the Capture Scratch folder but they have never made it to the project browser window.
Running 10.4.9 in an iBook G4. Using FCE HD 3.5. Scratch Disk set to an external hd (Maxtor 120) and Easy Setup to DV-NTSC 32 kHz Firewire Basic because my video camera is a Canon ZR 45. Using DV tape---no HD. What else? Initially had a problem with camera recognition, but did the QT thing which solved that.
Capturing is a problem, yet when I played the QT clips in the Capture Scratch folder they seem OK.
Anyone have an idea about what is (isn’t) going on? Maybe these clips were never captured at all. So why are they in the folder?

    G'Day Lee.
If they are on the Scratch Disc and play correctly then the capture side of things is OK.
The only thing I can think of is that you may have had more than one Sequence open at the time and the captured clips in question have been associted with the Browser Folder that was the active capture bin.
Always look for a little clapper board icon at the top left of the Browser. It's into this Folder/Bin all captures appear. If so:
Open your Seqeunce, use File>Import Files, then navigate to your Scratch Disc where the files are you wish to have in Browser, select them and hopefully it's all good.

  • Issues with capturing clips.

when i capture clips witht he hidef 1080i60 apple codec it cuts each clip at the scene. instead of one 62 minute clip. how can i change this.

That's the way FCE captures & treats HDV material. It's a change from the way FCE works with DV material.
One can only guess why Apple made that change w/r/t HDV video but I suspect that they not only got a lot of feedback from users who wanted it that way but also considered how very large a 62-minute 1080i60 HDV file could be (49GB ... Bueller .... Bueller .... anyone ... anyone?) and decided that it would be better disk (and risk) management to create smaller files representing individual shots.

  • Showing the real timecode on keyword collection clips

When I create clips in a Keyword collection is there any way to have them show the correct timecode when in a list view? Under the media start column the timecode appears to be the starting timecode of the main clip the keyworded clips are from.
In fact once I have made a keyword collection with a lot of clips (in this case it is long interviews with keyword clips for different parts) I can't figure out any way to sort those clips in the keyword collection. They seem to be there randomly. Like sorting by timecode would put them in order but since the start column is all the same it won't sort them.
Seems a simple thing so I must be overlooking something.

Say I have a hour long clip that has start timecode of 02:10:10:10
I make lots of keyword selctions called Good Bite. When I got to that keyword collection and go to a list view and look at the Media Start column every one of those clips in that keyword collection show a start time of 02:10:10:10
Though they clearly aren't really that start time as many of them all come later out of that same clip. I can see the REAL timecode in the timecode viewer at the bottom. Since the media start doesn't show the right timecode there is not way to sort by that timecode or even use that as a refrence.
This seems like a HUGE oversight as seeing timecode is important. The timecode is there the column just doesn't show it, it shows the timecode of the first frame of the clip the keyword subclip came from. These seems very wrong.
Does that make sense? This seems like such a simple thing.

  • Should I export captured clips as Quicktime movies?

Do I need to export my captured clips as Quicktime movies if I want to import them as source clips in other projects?
I had been importing directly from the capture scratch folder, but this resulted in mono audio tracks, rather than stereo. Everything else looked fine...
This problem has been driving me nuts...perhaps this is the explanation.

    I figured it out elsewhere.

  • Problems capturing clips

I using the latest version of FCP with a Blackmagic card. Everything has been working fine until today. I'm having problems capturing clips. I'll start Log & Capture, grab a clip, the window displays it is capturing it, and then when I look at the logging bin, my clip is not there. But if I look in the capture scratch folder, the clip is there.
Now, if I try to import that or any other clip, FCP gives me an error message. Does anyone know what could be wrong? I would appreciate your help.

Probably a Black Magic issue so be prepared to talk to them.
To debug this, you have to take the Black Magic stuff out of the equation to determine if FCP is at fault. If you have any DV device, try to capture from it.
