Timed loop miss some items

Hi all,
I am using cRIO 9025 AND NI 9203 to sample from seven current channels at 1000 Hz. I wrote the data with timestamp into a file. However, it seems that the sampling is not continous.
As you can see from the text file attached, the time stamps for the fisrt sample and the second sample have a difference which is 3 ms. Then this would happen every 208 samples. If you open the file with Notepad++, you would see it clearly.
And I found that if I decrease the number of channels from 7 to 1, the problem would happen every 656 samples which is very wierd.
I try my best but still can't understand why this happens. Could you please help me have a look at the VI?
Thank you very much.

From looking into the VI, i can only guess why the "time jumps" occur so "deterministic".
But it is quite obvious to me that some things can be optimized which maybe can already remove the issue:
- Eliminate redundant code (taking timestamp).
- Remove unnecessary computations (select function, feedback for dt and false-constants).
- Stick to one datatype (change the offset and scale to double).
- Never ever compare doubles as equal/not equal!
- Split up logging from acquisition into different loops. Use RT FIFOs instead of normal queues.
I assume that the "time jumps" are generated by finished late iterations and the setting to maintain the phase and to discard missed iterations....
hope this helps,
Norbert

You are probably correct about the IOS version.  Yes, I use iTunes.  My phone gave me a choice of several networks, neighbors I assume, and asked me to create a new network.  I could not join neighbor's networks because I do not have a password and for other obvious reasons and do not have wifi in my home - so I was stuck at the "Other Network" screen.  I know I am not a heavy weight when it comes to software, etc, but it does not have to be this difficult.  Where is Steve when you need him?

  • Missed iterations of TTL triggered timed loop

    Hello everyone,
I have a camera control VI that waits for TTL information from the camera shutter and uses it as a timing source for a timed loop. In this timed loop the camera is readout and analyzed. The program should react as soon a possible to a new image and therefore I set the timed loop to 'Discard missed items'  so that it doesnt try to catch up (the events im trying to detect are quite rare and last several frames).
The problem is this: When I set the camera for a certain numebr of frames (for example 10.000 frames) sometimes due to the discarded frames the loop iteration number never reaches the expected last frame number and doesnt exit (it stays at 9.998 for instance). I noticed I can prevent this by deselecting 'maintain original phase' . However it is unclear to me what exactly happens with these settings in a TTL triggered situation like this.
Is it the case that the loop skips the new data but starts the next loop at the correct iteration number (+1)? Or is something else happening?
    Im thankfull for any help!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Dear j.win,
If you deselect "Maintain Original Phase", actually you will never discard any iteration, whatever the value of "Discard missed items". Instead, the loop will try to catch up with the late iterations.
Using an external timing source (your TTL for example) instead of an internal timing source does not change anything. You can use the "Period" (dt) input of the Timed Loop to specify when the loop is supposed to iterate (the unit is the "ticks" in the case of an external timing source). A value of "1" means that the Loop try to iterate at every ticks of the external timing source. If for some reason one iteration lasts longer than that, you will have a "late iteration". Also with a value of "1", it is not possible to modify the "phase", then the "Maintain Original Phase" parameter will just defined wether or not you skip the iteration. If "Maintain Original Phase" is false, the loop will execute immediatly after a late iteration to still execute it, but a bit latter. If the "Maintain Original Phase" is true, the loop will execute immediatly after a late iteraion if the "Discard missed item" is false otherwise the loop will skip the iteration.
    Is it clearer now?

  • Missing Camera Roll - iCloud "Some items could not be restored"

After having some problems with my previous ipad 3, I had it replaced and tried restoring everything from iCloud. Everything went seemingly well until a pop-up appeared saying "Some items could not be restored." Everything seems to be accounted for except for the camera roll which looks to be about ~50MB or less. The backup for my ipad is 260MB while only giving me ~210MB after iCloud is "finished" restoring.
I have tried troubleshooting it by restoring my ipad and then using different backup versions of the ipad on two different networks (school and home) with no results. Unfortunately I never started photostream or even thought of backing it up manually through my itunes. (I used my ipad straight out of the box when I got it ) The "explanation/resolution" that apple gives me is "Some data such as Camera Roll photos, videos, and app data was not successfully restored from the backup. Wait a few minutes and then attempt the restore again while connected to a reliable Wi-Fi network," which is clearly not working.
Has anyone else gotten this error before? Any troubleshooting ideas?
    Thank you in advance,

  • While loop inside a timed loop

    Hi everybody!
       I'm using:
           - LV 7.1 + RealTime;
           - compactFieldpoint;
I've noticed a strange behaviour, when I put a while loop inside a timed loop.  Let's fix timed loop with these settings:
           - 1 KHz clock
           - 1 ms period (yes, I know it's short....)
           - offset 0 ms
           - Phase 0
           - Discard missed period (ON) and MAintain original Phase (ON);
           - Timeout: -1.
If inside this loo, I put a traditional while loop, waiting (say) for an event to occur, and if this event does not arrive, my cFP-2020 hangs! I mean, it becomes unreachable for the debugger, and, more, if I run a ping to it's address, after some cycles it becomes unreachable also from ping!
Clearly, this code statement lock the fieldPoint, because if I remove the inner while loop all works.
I know that with 1 ms period, timed loop always finishes late, but I set to discard missed period and timeout to -1.
It seems to me that sometimes Timed Loop add heavi overhead to programs, I'm turning to all while loop based tasks, even if my application has to be real-time!
Advices welcomed! Have a nice day!

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I think the issue here is that putting your while loop inside a Timed Loop increases the priority for that task. Timed Loops can have dynamic priorities set over eachother, but they all run between Above Normal and Time Critical priority. My guess is that the debugger and built-in TCP functions run at Above Normal priority or less. This means your cFP isn't hanging, it's doing what it thinks is best. It's trying to finish this task before handling any lower-priority tasks.
The suggestion to put a Wait function in your loop is an OK one. Keep in mind that you can actually set your wait time to zero instead of one and get the same positive benefit of handling other tasks. I would also suggest that you might look into waiting for this event in a lower priority (non-Timed) loop, and then transmit the appropriate data to your Timed Loop using an RT-FIFO or something. That might give you better handling. Just a thought....

  • What determines Finished Late? flag in timed loop?

I've monitored the Global Start Time (and Iteration Start) from iteration to iteration in a real-time loop.  These delta time between iteration starts varies beyond my loop rate (e.g. 1680 usec between iteration starts with a 1666 usec period), yet the Finished Late? flag does not indicate true.  Maintain Phase is TRUE, Discard Missed Periods is FALSE, Deadline and Timeout are default (-1).  So why does Finished Late? not fire when all clocks tell me the loop was late?

A (very) rough example is below and some results (run on an RT controller).  I guess the loop didn't "finish late" but it appears that they can (and usually do) start (significantly) late or early so am I missing something?  This jitter is there even when the Chart and Stop button are removed from the timed loop (e.g. using RT FIFOs to send the data to a chart loop).  To some extent I answered my own question - my loops are not "finishing late" so the flag isn't set, but apparently the jitter here is significant.  In this simplistic example, I saw jitter of +/- 4 ticks (usec) when the CPU usage is at barely 1% per core (dual core) - so is the RT jitter just bad in general or is it the 1Mhz clock or ???

  • Minimise front panel of vi containing timed loop = problem

    Is this expected behaviour...
    Run the attached VI.
All it is supposed to do is beep every 10 cycles.
When you minimise it and try to restore the front panel though... it locks up for a random amount of time.
I don't think it is supposed to do that. (I'm running it on XP Pro.)
Originally I was chasing this problem in a data acquisition loop. The buffer would overflow and exit the app with an error when it was minimised.
It took all day to track it down to this.
Hmmm... I just tried to save it back to a version 8.0 vi and it doesn't seem to have the same error!

I'm using LabVIEW 8.5.1 on two PCs and it does it on both of them.
I just emailed the vi to a colleague and after a few minimise/maximises it locked up on him too.
I've just found that if I remove the left and right data nodes inside the timed loop the bug seems to go away.
    Steps to repeat bug:
    1. Minimise all windows (Windows+m)
    2. Restore vi front panel and run it. (It should start beeping twice a second)
    3. Minimise / Restore it rapidly by repeatedly clicking on the vi's Front Panel 'task bar button' (down the bottom).
After a while the beeping will stop when the front panel is minimised and it wont restore. Then after a while (with or without clicking on the task bar button) the front panel will restore and the missed periods will execute very quickly (as the timed loop does what it is configured to do).
I think because of the simplicity of the example vi the bug doesn't show up as often. When I ran it in the real application (too many vi's to post) it crashed every time. In the real application there isn't much going on in the timed loop, it is just used to queue items into a separate consumer loop. The problem is that when the bug occurs, ALL LABVIEW CODE stops executing, not just the code inside the timed loop. So another vi running in parallel (in a daemon) that retrieves messages from a device queue stops and the device buffer overflows.
Attached is a modified vi to demonstrate that code outside the timed loop stops executing too. The bug occurs here on three different PCs, the only common thing I can think of is LabVIEW 8.5.1.

  • Timed loop and CPU usage

Platform is WIN_XP Pro and machine is a P4 at 2.5Ghz with 512 Mb ram.
    LV7.1 + PCI 6229
I am using  50ms Timed loop for running a state machine inside it
and also a  whole lot of other things like reading / writing
DAQMx  functions;  file I/O functions and such. As the
project involves a  main and sub-panlel set up local variables
could not be elimnated fully and there should be something like 150 of
them. But not all are accessed always - maybe about 15 of them at any
given time depending on the SM staus.
    Problem :
Once started the "Finished late"  indication  is off and
the  actual timing  alternates between 49 to 52 ms. The CPU
    usage is around 25%.
But as time goes by,  the system gets unstable : After 15 minutes
or so, the Finished Late indication is always ON and the CPU usage is
gradually tending towards or exceeds 100%.
Obviously the machine control timing now gets affected and things slow
down badly. Closing the application ands restarting repeats the above
    cycle.
I am at a loss  to understand what is happening ?  WIll
breaking down the single Timed Loop to multiple ones help  ? WIll
that be an efficient way of parallel threading ?
I can post the code but its quite large and will do it as a last resort.

    Hello,
It sounds like an interesting problem.  It would be worth some experimentation to figure out what's going wrong - attempting to decouple major "pieces" of the code would be helpful.  For example, you could try breaking your code into multiple loops if that makes sense in your architecture, but perhaps you could even eliminate all but one of the loops to begin with, and see if you can correlate the problem to the code in just one of your loops.
Another concern is that you mention using many local variables.  Variable read operations cause new buffer allocations, so if you're passing arrays around that way, you could be hitting a problem of forcing your machine to perform many allocations and deallocations of memory.  As arrays grow, this can be a bigger and bigger problem.  You can use other techniques for passing data around your block diagram, such as dataflow if possible (just simple wires), or queues where dataflow can't dicatate program flow completely.
Hopefully looking into your code with the above considerations will lead you in the right direction.  In your case, removing code so that you can identify which elements are causing the problem should help significantly.

I had hacker problems so I reloaded Snow Leopard. Afterwards, Mac had to delete 798 items. Now it is looping on 4 items to delete for the past 2 weeks. I can't reboot, reload, or restart. I have to let the battery run down for it to turn off. I think a big part of the problem is that someon one the internet (the hacker) was mirroring my hard drive. It seems to have locked up my system. I could be wrong about this guess, though. All I do know is that it is now looping on the last 4 iems, and I can't do anything.
Well, I can get it to turn on, but all it does is continously try to delete the last 4 items. When I try to reload Snow Leopard, it tells me my hard drive is full and that I need to delete items.
Can anyone help? I am so lost without my Mac. I am back on the PC, and though it works, I'm sure many of you will understand when I say it's just not a Mac.
    Thanks.

I installed Snow Leopard using my Apple external Superdrive. I followed directions I found on the Apple site. Here is the article info:  Mac OS X v10.6 Snow Leopard: How to Erase and Install
                     Article HT3910
                     located at: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3910
Everything was going smoothly until I got to the reinstall part. I had to choose to reinstall on a hard drive or network drive. I've never used a network drive; just the hard drive. It seems that's where the troubles began. I selected the hard drive. It seemed to go well, and then I got the message that I needed to delete some files because I was out of space. I chose to get rid of my music files, but, there were only 636. I don't know what the rest of the files were. I was using the Secure Empty Trash command.
That was my first time doing an erase and install. I tried to do it again, but I now get a continuous error telling me that my hard drive is full and I must delete files. Only I can't delete files because 4 files are still being deleted and my computer won't let me stop the process.
I found out about the hackers mostly by the fact that whenever I used to watch something like Hulu or Netflix, I never had problems with internet connection or speed. Lately, I had internet connection problems. I went in to check my settings for my internet provider and found out the settings had been changed to public and all these extra computers were connected to my network.

  • LabVIEW RT, Timed loop, finished late, Call by reference

I have a timed loop triggered by the sample clock of a DAQ-Card. The sample Clock is 8 kHz and the loop will run with dt = 4. Normally the loop is running without finished late[i-1]. But from time to time it happens that the loop is running extremly longer which means instead of 0.5 millisec it needs 4 - 5 millisec. It seems this doesn't never occur while accessing DAQmx.
The application uses plugin technologies and some of the VIs in the timed loop are preloaded and called by Call by Reference.
Does those VIs inherit the priority, execution system and CPU of the timed loop?
The application is running on LV RT 2009 on a Dual core PXI-Controller. The timed loop is bound to CPU 1. There is no  difference runinng the application from the development environment or as a startup application.
For the measuring test  I modified the application in a way that I don't have:
disk access for storing the result file
    TCP/IP communication
Controls on the front panel of the top level VI

    To keep you informed:
I stripped the application and have left only the measurement storing module and the timed loop. The loop was using the microsecond timer running each 500 µsec. Additional all Non-Real-Time modules were loaded and only one module creates a XML string and sends it to the communication layer which will drop it because no TCP/IP port is open. The creation of the XML string is done each 300 ms.
In this case I don't have any finished late iterations
Next I added the DAQ Module. Now I get finished late again but with a lesser frequency as original.
I removed all unnesseccary tasks from the DAQ moulde leaving one task for a PXI-4204 for using as the clock source for the timed loop. No I get finished late seldom.
I removed the module which will send the XML string and I don't get finished late.
Next I was adding code to see memory allocation. I can when memory allocation is changing but it is not related to the finished late iterations.
Next time I have the chance to do more tests I will see which DAQ task triggers the finished late iterations. I have one AI task on a PXI-4204,  4 Counter tasks on a PXI-6602, 1 DI task on a PXI-6514, 1 DO task on a PXI-6514, 1 DI task on a PXI-6259, 1 DO task on a PXI-6259, 1 AO task on a PXI-6259 and 1 AO task on a PXI-6711.
The AI task on the PXI-4204 is running in Continous Sampling (Single Point HW Timed is not supported), all other tasks exept the DI and DO are Single Point HW Timed.

Thanks for the advice. Tried this and does not work. Exact same results. I really wonder if I am the only person with a MacBook Pro Retina with an 512GB SSD running Mountain Lion that has tried to install Acrobat 10.0.0. I think there is some conflict with Mac OS 10.8.2 that is hostile to the installation sequence Adobe created for Acrobat. I fear Adobe would rather I upgrade to Acrobat X1 than spend their time patching this.
