Timeline behavior when inserting a clip

I've got a timeline built, but it's sort of a draft. I'll replace some clips with others, delete some, insert some. Problem is, when I'm inserting a new clip, it would make my life so much easier if the rest of the clips in the timeline would move out of the way to allow the insert, but I can't seem to get it to behave this way.
In other words, let's say I've got a timeline 3 minutes long, full of 5-second clips. So, if I insert a 10-second clip at 2:30 in the timeline, I want every clip at 2:30 and beyond to move to the right 10 seconds to make room for my new clip.
Surely there is a way to do this, huh?

Yes, there is.
First, place your playhead at the point in the timeline where you want the new clip inserted. Presumably you have the new clip in your Viewer. Click & drag it onto the Canvas and the edit overlay will appear on top of the canvas - drop your clip onto the Insert box in the edit overlay window. Your clip will be inserted where your playhead is and all the clips to the right in the timeline will be pushed to the right.
Note: make sure you have the playhead positioned exactly where you want the new material to go; if it's in the middle of an existing clip, or even 1 single frame before the end of an existing clip, that clip will get cut at the playhead and the new clip will be inserted there. If that's what you want, fine, but just be aware of the behavior.

  • API default behavior when inserting new members

Hi,it seems that by default the Java-API verifies the outline after each IEssMember.createChildMember(...) call. Is there a way to turn this off? What I would like to do, is to insert an element and mark it as "Dynamic Calc". This doesn't work properly as long as this member is Level-0. But if I create an outline like this...A|---B (Dynamic Calc) |---C...then B is Level-0 when I insert it. However, it becomes Level-1 as soon as I create member "C".Thanks for your help, Christian

Hi Christian,I don't think the 'other' APIs let you set a non-level 0 member to be dynamic calc either. If I remember right (and it has been since the version 5 beta when I last tried this), you have to add children before you set 'Dynamic Calc'.Tim TowApplied OLAP, Inc.

  • Question on sort behavior when inserting ACL lines into existing ACL

    Hello,
I have a request / need to insert lines into existing ACLs (some standard, some extended) and I need to control where they are added (we want some to go to the top, some in the middle, some second from bottom).
I'm trying to understand / follow how ACL lines are added / sorted.  I have three examples of different configs (standard ACL) where someone inserts lines into the existing ACL.
The problem is, it does not follow the guidelines I've found on cisco.com - i.e. using Sequence #s if specified, they don't all get added to the bottom, etc.
How can I determine how a line added to an existing ACL will behave?
I've added new ACLs, and as far as I can tell, for those examples, it will follow the sequence #s for both standard and extended acls, but not at all for these examples.
    thanks!

There's a tutorial on creating client-side XSLT pages here: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/dreamweaver/articles/display_xml_data.html.
I'm not sure if it will work with a template. Unfortunately, XSLT is a mind-bender that tends to do serious damage to the average brain. That's why most people use server-side technology to deal with XML.
You mention that XSL isn't supported on your PHP server. What about SimpleXML? That's standard in all PHP 5 installations. Don't say your server is still running PHP 4. Support for PHP 4 was dropped nearly two years ago.

I've tried to mark your response as "Solved," but get a error page ("An error in the system has occurred. Please contact the system administrator if the problem persists."). I will keep trying.

I am in the process of preparing to test a sample from your brand and model camera in my Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1 on Windows 7 64 bit. I will have the results probably tomorrow morning.
For now I just want to put you through the drill that I do for anyone who says he/she is using Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1.
    1. Are you working from the 8.0/8.0.1 Update of the program?
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4653
    2. Do you have the automatic Background Rendering and AutoAnalyzer features turned OFF.
For Background Rendering option. See Edit Menu/Preferences/General.
For AutoAnalyzer option. Click on Organizer in the row below the blue active Organize header in order to open the Elements Organizer. In the Elements Organizer workspace, go to Edit Menu/Preferences/AutoAnalyzer Options and disable all the AutoAnalzyer options. To return to the Premiere Elements workspace from the Elements Organizer workspace, in the Elements Organizer workspace, go to File Menu/Exit.
Is your computer optimized in spite of the fact that  you have a high end laptop? I presumed so but always go to verify, no pile ups of preview files, conformed video and audio files et al.
Looking at the properties of your source media, I see:
    video compression = MPEG1
    audio compression = MPEG-Layer1 (.mp2)
    Frame Size = 640 x 480 (4:3)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio = 1.0
Frame Rate = 30 progressive frames per second
With properties like those you are sure to get a red line over that content since there is no project preset with that description.
But, your choice of the default NTSC DV Standard would have been mine also.
I am heading to try to get a quick look at the behavior of the sample video here in my Premiere Elements 8.0/8.0.1.
    To be continued.

  • Multi-track duration issue when inserting clips

I apologize if I missed this anywhere.  Tried to search first.
I'm using Audition cs6 and I have a clip in my waveform viewer.  I have already created a new multi-track session that matches the specs of the source files.
HOWEVER, when I make a selection on the source file and select "Insert into multitrack" and then select the session, it inserts it 14-hours and 22-minutes into the blank 30-second session.  This throws off the whole viewing slider and it becomes very difficult to manipulate the timeline.  If I simply drag the file from the browser and then re-trim it, it's fine, but not using the insert command.
Why is this and is there a way to correct this?
    Any help would be wonderful

It sounds like the file has BWF Time Reference metadata embedded.  You can verify this by opening Window > Metadata and under the BWF tab, check the Time Reference field.  To disable this behavior, uncheck Preferences > Multitrack > Use embedded timecode when inserting clips into Multitrack.

  • AVCHD clip's always needs to get rendered when inserting. Media info about .mts file attached

    Hi
I have previously discussed this problem in another thread. I have .mts files that I insert in a project (project preset set to PAL-AVCHD Full-HD)....when inserting i always need to render the clips and as many peole have mentioned, this should not be needed, instead PrEl should take care of this by itself..and it really sunds weird if it doesnt...
So, why is this happen...i get so frustrated when I have to re-render the clips all the time, since also - it takes a looong time for jsut tiny tiny clips ? I posted the hardware specs I have two days ago in this same forum, and it looks from the answers I got that this hardware should be enough for not having to wait several minutes to jsut add a 6 second AVCHD clip ?
Please look at below image that is a screenshot from MediaInfo about the details for my .mts file I'm trying to add - resulting in new rendering needed, plus the fact that it takes about 5 minutes to render it ??
Please, suggestion or solutions ? I'm lost...I got feedback yesterday that this is a known problem with both PrEl 8 and PrEl 9 ..that AVCHD clips needs to get rendered manually when they are added....i.e a known bug in these versions ?? Any experience ? How can I move forward, I have problems to understand that such bug should exist without anysolution and/or workaround since I see this as a feature that MUST work for people not getting crazy :-)

    Hi Neale
many thanks for your time trying to help me out.....
Please see my answers below in bold, hope you and/or someone else can help me with some further answers
Are you opening a project created in PRE8 with PRE9? If yes, that is the most likely cause of the problem. Create a new PRE9 project and see if the same problems after you import the clip and save the project. No, I'm only working in Pr 8.0 - I have this problem as soon as I add a clip..not that into the different formats, just know that the best possible output from my camera (Canon HF10) should be AVCHD..thats why I added teh detailed info from "MediaInfo". can you tell from that info I'm correct, i.e that the .mts file is really AVCHD as expected ? Just to help me confirm that. So, I havent been using PrEl 9.0...another person two days ago told me that PrEl 9 also got similar problems as I reported for my PrEl 8.0 ?
When you first added the clip to your project did you receive any messages that the file was not suitable for the format? If so did you accept the offered preset? If you didn't start a new PRE9 project and this time accept the offer. No, I did not get any messages as all about the format. Occasionally I get something like "Do you want to fix the quality in the clip" ..cant recall exactelly what the message is, but its for sure nothing about the format
When you put it into the project, did you have a red line running the length of the timeline? If you do then your preset is not correct (this is purely PRE9. PRE8 always required rendering AVCHD footage).Yes, always when I add a clip I get this red line. If I understand everything correctly this means I have to hit ENTER key to create a preview file....thats my second problem - as soon as I do that, it renders the clip very very slowly although I should have prety good hardware (According to spec posted two days ago).
So, as a summary. Do you think that buying Premiere Elements 9.0 should get rid of this problem when adding AVCHD ? If that is the case, I feel I just want to be sure about this and that I will not experience the problem again. Can it not just be some setting that is, by default, not correct in Premiere El 8.0 that is causing this or is this really a known bug without fixes available from Adobe?
    Best Regards
    Helmut

  • Losing the audio track when moving a clip from the browser to the timeline

Today we were trying to add two clips from the browser in Final Cut Express HD to the timeline that was created yesterday. The problem is, the clips we were adding today are not moving with the audio tracks. All other clips from when we created the movie are fine but the two we added today have no sound. The audio works when viewing the clip in "viewer" but not once it is moved to the timeline. Any thoughts?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Look at the left side of the time line, there is a device (the patch panel) to set the current video and audio target tracks. (little V1 and a1 a2 icons). Swith them to desired tracks to select the target audio tracks (that's where the video and audio-or just one of them-will be inserted in timeline upon editing). There is also a contextual menu (control click) with reset panel command.

  • When I nudge clips in Premiere CC they will "run over" other clips, how do I change this behavior so the clip will stop when it hits another clip?

When I nudge clips in Premiere CC they will "run over" other clips, how do I change this behavior so the clip will stop when it hits another clip?

Not sure what behavior you are exactly looking for, to move the clip and have it stop and the next clip in the direction of travel, drag the clip with the mouse with Snapping turned on in the timeline.

  • Why is the image on screen smaller when I insert a clip from a friend, into my short movie?

    Hi,
I'm editing a short piece in CS6 using some footage I filmed, and I'd like to insert a clip that someone has sent me. When I do this, it shows up in the playback screen at half the size of the footage I've filmed. I'm new to this so not sure what the problem is. I can see that it's 25fps, whereas mine is 50fps. Is that the reason? And how do I resolve it? Thanks in advance.

but the clip must be too low res as it's pixelating now
That is the problem, when one has to apply too much Scaling (whether from the Effects>Motion>Scale, or Scale to Frame Size. It's the nature of the beast, when trying to use lower-rez footage in a higher-rez Project/Sequence.
There are some 3rd party up-rezzing programs, but how well they work, will likely depend on how critical the user is, and also the degree of up-rezzing (Scale) is applied. If the difference is great, they will probably not be adequately helpful. Any hope of re-shooting at a resolution that matches your Sequence, and other footage?
    Good luck,
    Hunt

Using Flach CS4 and action script 2.0 how do I advance to a specific frame of the main timeline when a movie clip instance come to the end of its timeline?

code on the last frame of your movieclip instance:
_root.gotoAndStop('whatever_frame');  // will work unless this swf is loaded into another swf.  in that situation, you should use a relative path to the main timeline (eg,  _parent or _parent._parent etc).

  • Adobe Premiere CC Crashes When Selecting Multiple Clips

This project was already derailed by multicam, now that I've got my assembly edit ready to go, I've discovered a new show-stopper:  Premiere Pro CC crashes when I select multiple clips on the timeline.  I can't select more than 3 clips at a time, or the entire program comes crashing to it's knees.  Anyone else experiencing something like this?  Can anyone else reproduce this behavior?
Here's a video of the experience:
    http://youtu.be/DPOUinOSzDE
    Any word on an update?
    ASUS G75VX
    Windows 7 Pro, 64-bit
    GTX 670MX, 3GB GDDR5
    16GB RAM

Progress.  I've been able to isolate the problem.  On my timeline I have some "regular" clips and some "merged" clips.  Regular clips are from either source: a Canon 7D (MP4 / MOV) or a Canon VIXIA HF G20 (AVCHD).  The Merged clips are only from the Canon 7D only (for video) and an audio recorder (MP3 at 320kbps).  The 7D footage is 1080/24p.  The VIXIA also shoots in 24p.
Since "Merge Clips" sync on audio is not working for me, I've employed my former CS6 workflow:
    1. Sync all of the video and audio clips through PluralEyes 3 resulting in a preliminary sequence, "Clips_to_be_merged_sequence".
    2. I work my way through each of the clips, adjusting the audio track(s) for variances in drift between the on camera sound and the audio recorder.  I do this enabling "Audio Time Units", rather than video frames, so I can get extremely acurate.
    3. When I have a timeline full of nicely syncronized audio/video pairs, I merge clips, one painstaking clip at a time (of course I set up a keyboard shortcut for this).  For the merge, I "sync on In points".
    4. The merged clip is added to my project panel.
    5. Now, when it comes time to choose my sound bite selects, I load the merged clip into the Source panel and mark my Ins and Outs.
    6. Time to create a subclip, of course with the new SOFT handles. (I'VE BEEN WANTING SOFT HANDLES FOR A LONG TIME!!!)
    7. The subclip appears to be properly created and placed into the Project panel.  It even shows the correct duration (i.e. 14 seconds)
    8.  When I drag that subclip onto the timeline it drags the entire length of the parent clip, without in or out points (not just the 14 second subclip).
    9.  I undo and decide to go back through the original clips again; mark ins and outs and simply drop to the timeline (either Insert or Overwrite).
So in the end, I'm using sections of the Merged clip, but I'm not using Subclips of the Merged clips (because that doesn't work).
Now, what's happening, though I didn't know it when I recorded the video above, is that Premiere is crashing any time I select both "regular" footage and "merged" footage.
    So, two bugs here:
    1. Can't use Subclips that are derived from Merged clips in ANY timeline.  Once dragged to the timeline it expands to the full duration of the original clip.
    2. Can't select both "regular" and "merged" clips at the same time on the timeline.
JStrawn (staff) was kind enough to offer to take a look at some small sample files.  But my interview clips are very long, and I'm concerned that if I export them, to make them shorter, they may not actually exibit the problems I'm having on the original clips.
Anyone else using this type of "Merge Clip" workflow that could reproduce either the subclip-from-merged-clip bug or the mixed-selection crash given the steps above?

  • Inserting a clip at the beginning of a edited string of clips?

I have five clips edited together. I need to put one more clip at the beginning of the string. Is there a way to move an entire string of clips forward all at once so that I can slip the clip in? Hope this makes sense?

What CC and Ann recommended is right on the money for your immediate goal of inserting a clip before clips that are already in the timeline. But there will be other occasions when you want to select multiple track items. There are several ways to do so:
To select all track items before or after a given point, select the Track Select Backward or Track Select Forward tool and click the timeline. Those tools select clips on all tracks; if you want to isolate a single track, hold SHIFT while clicking.
With the Selection tool active [V]: click a blank spot in the timeline and drag across the desired clips. This is called "marquee selection." By the way, if you do this with the Ripple Edit or Rolling Edit tool active, the edit points between clips will be selected rather than the clips themselves.
Also with the Selection tool, shift-click the track items. This is the best method when the clips you want select are intermixed with others that you want to leave unselected.
