Timeline - clicking on video or audio portion, why does it gray out?

Hi. I'm new to Premiere Pro CS5.5.
Question 1: On the left side of the timeline panel there are various tools to toggle track output, toggle sync lock, toggle track lock, etc.. When one clicks the empty space around the settings, the area greys in or out. Does this signify anything?
Question 2: On the left of those tools there is a blank space. Sometimes when I drag tracks to the time line the Video row will show 'V' and the audio will show 'A1'. What signifiance do these play?

Nope. We don't even know what you mean by "misplaced".
Is it not there?
Is the audio somewhere else in a different folder?
Is the audio there, but leads or follows the video by a certain amount?
Other things:
Have you activated the audio checkbox in the Output Module when you add the comp ro the Render Queue?
Is there audio present in your comp when you RAM Preview?

Every piece of software has a learning curve, and its own terminology. After Effects is a complex professional tool, used by home enthusiasts right through to feature film makers.
There's plenty of very user friendly video editing software that will do the tasks you've mentioned easily. Might I suggest Adobe Premiere Elements.
For the record, you can't apply an effect to anything in After Effects until you have selected a target layer in the timeline. This functionality is true of any video editing or compositing software I can think of,

If you are syncing music to the iPhone automatically, you won't be able to drag and drop tracks on to the iPhone and the music will be grayed out.
You'll have to Manually Manage the music.
Configure iPhone, iPad, or iPod for manual management
If you have iTunes 7 or later*, follow these instructions:
Connect the device to your computer.
Open iTunes.
Select iPhone, iPad, or iPod in the Devices list.
Click the Summary tab and select "Manually manage music and videos".
Click Apply.
Even when you have enabled manual management, you can still sync some content automatically. Select any content tab, such as Video, to enable automatic syncing for that type of content.

Why does ical print out staring the week on tuesday?
Maybe the week starts one day later for the Yosemite dev team, but certainly not in my neck of the woods.
The actual print out also looks nothing like the new matt and 'flat' graphic style of Yosemite.
I suggest you start on monday next week and sort these issues out.

Why does firefox time out so often. I can be in the middle of something and it just stops. did it as I am trying to write this note. very frustrating! It either times out or freezes. the former happens more often. I can be on the web or on yahoo mail.

The default of the pref network.http.max-connections has been increased from 30 to 256 in Firefox 6+ versions.
Try to decrease the value of the pref <b>network.http.max-connections</b> from 255 to a setting like 30 as used in Firefox 3 versions.

Chances are you are looking at the place holder of a large image. Go to the preferences and check that View Large Images is checked.

HT2500 I sometimes get e-mails where the sender sends me several PDF's attachments. These attachments appear already opened on the e-mail unlike most PDF's which I open by clicking on the PDF icon. Why does this happen?

I sometimes get e-mails with pdf attachments. However instead of opening a PDF icon the body of the e-mail message has the PDF's already opened. Why does this happen? Is there anything I can change on my mac book pro to make these PDF's come thru with their individual icons which can then be opened.

This is a long-standing design flaw in Apple Mail.
Prior to Mavericks, this command in Terminal would stop the annoying behavior:
defaults write com.apple.mail DisableInlineAttachmentViewing -bool yes
This Terminal command stopped working in Mail 7.1 under Mavericks. I have reported this to Apple as both a feature request and a bug. You should too.

Can't select videos for upload. All files are grayed out.

Ever since Safari 8, I am no longer able to upload videos to places like Amazon (for submitting video reviews.)
When I write a review on Amazon and choose Video Review as the review type, then click on the "Choose file" button, the files listied in the file selection window that opens are all grayed out. None can be selected. This only happens in Safari. I can use Chrome and Firefox with no problems.
Anyone else seen this?
Any ideas how to get this working?
I've reported it as a bug to Apple a month ago and was hoping the recent 10.10.2 Yosemite update would fix it but it didn't.

Might be a cookies, cache, extensions, or plug-ins issue.
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Privacy tab.
Click: Remove All Website Data
Then delete the cache.
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that didn't help, from the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect: Allow plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

Why is Compressor Grayed out!? I have the original disk!

Thanks Apple! I had to reinstall FCP 4.5 because an auto update killed my FCP application performance. OK, fine, so I reinstalled the software and what do you know, NO COMPRESSOR. When I go to install it's grayed out as even an option. I paid for it and own the original disks; why can't I reinstall it? What do I have to do to get it installed again? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Why OpenCL is grayed out in supported and updated graphics card?

Hi,
I have NVIDIA GeForce 520 which does support open CL and is officially tested by Adobe.
I have the most updated driver installed from Nvidia.
I have win 7 64bit
I use Photoshop CS6 64bit
and still in preferences->performance->advanced settings
I see "Use OpenCL" grayed out.
Can anyone explain this?

I don't think ATI users necessarily have a totally different driver issue: we've confirmed through your thread that the problem causing OpenCL to intermittently become unavailable is most likely to be the result of errors caused by the graphics card driver, and I'm hopeful that it will be resolved by future driver updates (in fact GraySki's experience is that it already has been fixed on the ATI side). What causes PS to identify that there's a driver error may vary considerably: might be rendering video as you've experienced, might be using say the new blur filters. But the basic underlying issue appears to be driver error, regardless of the card manufacturer.

This gray transparent border is showing up in video exports. Can someone explain to me why and how to make it stop?
