Timeline Compression Question

Hello,
I am working with footage in a timeline that is HD (1440x1080)(16:9), compressor video setting is HDV 1080i60.
To get a higher level of quality, should I change the compressor setting to ProRes LT within the timeline before I export?
Text, photos, and graphics are part of the project and any help would be great.
Thanks

ProRes LT would make the graphics look better, but it won't improve the quality of the HDV footage. Video quality can't really be improved over the original.

  • File Compression Questions/Help Needed

Question, I have just completed an audio presentation project (audio book on CD) for a client (681 mgs) which I now need to have replicated 1500 times over. The problem is my outsourced replicator will only press cd's up to 650 mgs. Therefore, I need to figure out how to compress the presentation just slightly (as to not lose tone quality) to get in onto the disc. (The CD Rom will be played in the car or computer Cd players)
I used the Soundtrack 1.2 to complete the project and also have Quicktime pro, however, I'm not sure what to do and how to change the settings to get the compression correct.
    Thanks

Is it something you can simply save as an .aif file, then import it into iTunes and then compress it to mp3 at, say, 256 Kbps? That's pretty good... but if you're looking for better... perhaps an mp2? Not easy to find an mpeg1 layer 2 compression utility, but I use Sound Converter:

    It's a start...

  • Jpeg Compression Question

I would be grateful if someone could help me with this question
I have been working on a series of images taken in Raw , edited in PSE9 and then saved as Jpegs .
The Raw files were all roughly 10Mb each but the maximum size I can save in Jpeg seems to be 1Mb . Is this correct ?
Up to now this has never been an issue as I usually don't get anything printed larger than 5x7 , however I'm hoping to print off some larger poster sized prints and the Online site that I use only accepts Jpegs . Is 10/1 compression the least compression I can do in PSE 9 or am I missing something somewhere ?
    Edward

    Hi Edward
Normally for prints which are looked at closely you would select a resolution of 240ppi to 300ppi.
But for posters you can go very low, even much lower than 72ppi used for web images. This enables the print size to be vastly increased.
Because posters are viewed from a distance they will still look perfectly acceptable when a ppi of 10-19 is used.

  • Premiere / Media Encoder Compression Question

    Hey all -
Been banging my head on this one for awhile, thought I'd present my problem here - hope I can find a viable solution.
So, I have a 20 minute HD short film that I finished editing in Premiere last month. My sound engineer is working on the film, and requires the video it to be no larger than 100mb so he can work on it... and he needs it exported as a .MOV. My question is, I can't seem to get the file size down to less than 1gb.
What's the best way to compress a 20 minute HD video to a 100mb .mov? My options seem limited to size and 'quality' settings ( no VBR settings for .mov) ... but when I push the quality settings down super low, the video gets seriously degraded and the file size doesn't crunch down that small ...
Desperately need your advice here, friends! Can this be done, and how?
    thanks !!!
    -mark

The problem is that 100MB is hardly getting started with a 20 minute HD video.
There are a number of ways to cut down the file size. The first is to use an efficient codec. If you must use a Quicktime wrapper (.mov) then select H.264 as your codec.
The second is to cut down the bitrate (quality), which you have seen is rather destructive.
Once you have cut the bitrate, then there are ways to make the quality come back up. You could cut the frame rate to about 15. It would make it a bit jerky but since this is for sound and not color or other video related editing, you can cut the bitrate in half when you cut the frames in half and still get something decent.
You can cut the bitrate even more and get good quality if you export a standard definition video instead of HD. Does the audio guy really need HD?
In any case, 100MB is barely anything nowadays. Not for a 20 minute video.
Why does it have to be so small? Can't you post it where it can be downloaded> At around 1GB or so?

Does Premiere Pro 5.5 output TC on HD-SDI when using Kona 3. There have been reports by users that when recording the HD-SDI output (like to a Ki Pro Mini) that they are not seeing any Timeline Timcode coming out the spigot. Any Adobe folks or others know if this is true of false?

  • File compression question

Question about using the file compression feature within Finder. I understand that when I select multiple files and compress them, it creates a ZIP file with the default name 'archive.zip.' I created a working folder on my desktop and put in about 16 alias of photos that are down in my iPhoto 'originals' folder. When I created the archive.zip, file it was only 2.1 MB (the jpg's varied in size from <1 MB to 3 MB).
I did this with the presumption that by using aliases in my working folder, the compression utility actually compressed the jpg's in the various folders but not the alias pointers.
So, since the archive.zip is only 2.1 MB, what conclusion can I draw? Can the compression really squeeze them down that much?

that's wrong. the compression utility compressed the aliases as it should have. if you want to compress the original images that's what you need to put in that folder, not aliases. but keep in mind that jpegs are already compressed so you'll hardly gain any space by compressing them further.

  • Which Timeline compression codec

Hi I have recently edited a 1 hour presentation in HDV with two PIPs 1/ Large powerpoint slides 2/ Presenter speaking in smaller PIP. When I came to encode this to DVD it took 5 hours. I was advised that if I changed the sequence codec it might speed things up. My question is to what?
I have several more to do soon!
    Thanks
    Marc

Select the sequence in the browser or make it the active sequence in the timeline window, then type cmd+zero. In the video processing tab, select the sequence to render to ProRes.

  • Weird JPG compression question

    Hi,
I am using I am using Windows 7 x64. My camera (Nikon D700) automatically saves copyright data with my name and phone number. I am editing thoose JPEG files from Photoshop CS5 and save them on a HDD with compration ratio 12. For example:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26109102/TEST1.jpg
As you can see file size is about 4.67 MB
However, when I right click to file in windows 7 and choose properties and than remove my phone number, file size dramatically reduce at 1.45 MB. Here is a file:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/26109102/TEST1%20-%20just%20remove%20phone%20number.jpg
So what is the reason of that? Whan I compare both files I can not see the difference in compression. Could you also check it please. Is it a kind of bug?
    Thanks in advance.
    Koray

The original compression ratio is 66MB/4.5MB = 15 (mental arithmetic).
The final compression ratio is about 66MB/1,45MB = 45.
Such a high compression should be clearly visible, mainly at edges.
But the two images are almost identical. Use image calculation > subtract
and analyze the resulting alpha channel.
    a) by histogram
    b) by an extremely steep curve.
There are differences, but these are very small.
In my opinion the question is not yet answered. Or is the answer "Microsoft
has improved the standard JPEG compression by factor three"?
I'm using older software, therefore I can't reproduce the OP's tests.
    Best regards --Gernot Hoffmann
    Edit:
Compression by factor 45 for arbitrary images would deliver really bad results.
The situation here is slightly less critical, because large parts of the image are
    almost uniform.
But even if we assume an effective compression by factor 25 for the image parts
with details - the compression artifacts should be visible, in my opinion.
But the aren't. Here we need some clarification.

  • 2 questions - lost timeline + streamclip question

First off, everything was fine. New to this, but messing around with FCP 4.5. Suddenly, no matter how many times I close and re-open, I can't see the canvas or timeline. Double-clicked the sequence. Nothing. (What's the difference between a clip and a sequence, by the way?) I go to "Window" and "canvas" and "timeline" are grayed out. Crazy....
Also, I've got mpeg Streamclip Beta, but don't have the option to output to ProRes...?
    Thanks for the help!

You need to spend a little time learning the application.
A sequence is what you edit in and appears in the timeline window. A clip when opened from the browser appears in the viewer. The sequence icon has two horizontal yellows bars on it. Do you have one of those in the browser? If you double click on one the timeline window will open.
Also, when double-clicking on an empty sequence, it says "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card."
This does not appear when you open a sequence, but when you open a clip in a codec you don't have access to, like ProRes, which is not available with the version you're using. ProRes comes with FCP6 or later. If you install that application the ProRes codec will be available in MPEG Streamclip.

  • PAL to NTSC DVD compression questions

    Ok,
I have recently finished a dvd in PAL format with about 4.5GB total video once compressed. Now I need to get this into an NTSC version. Is it possible to use Compressor 2 to convert the DVD compressed clips/audio [the ones ready for PAL DVD] into NTSC format ready to build my project in DVDSP? Or do I need my original quicktime clips in PAL format and change them to NTSC in Compressor 2 then make them into NTSC DVD ready clips? Also what is the best setting for NTSC DVD in compressor that will be ok for the size of my final version [4.5GB]. Sorry about these questions but I made the PAl version with compressor 1 and there was far less settings to worry about.

I'm pretty sure you need to go back to your Final Cut source material and re-export via Compressor by selecting 'advanced standards conversion' to get your NTSC files. Then you can import these into DVDSP as NTSC assets.

  • Flip4 Mac compression question?

Hi everyone!- I have a flip4 mac question
I made a 4 minute video in Final Cut Pro I want to put on an iweb site.
it made a 57 Megabyte Quicktime file so I used "cleaner" to create from that a 6.8 MB WMV video (320X240) and it actually looks "ok"
I am wondering if anyone who has flip4 mac can answer the following questions as I am considering buying the pro version
    1) will flip4 mac make a WMV file
    2) will flip 4 mac compress it even smaller to say 3-4 MB (57 MB to 3-4 MB)?
    3) does flip4 mac make small flash files?
    4) Finally in researching the iweb discussions there seems to be allot of posts that says flip4mac crashes iweb has that been fixed?
PS any other program that any one knows of that will convert a QT movie to a small WMV?
    Thanks!
    Jim

    Klaatu,
I use Flip4Mac pro to embed .wmv movie files into my iWeb pages. Here is an example:
    http://austinloveministries.org/ALMMediaSite/ALMMediaJesusGodWithUs/DVD%20Lead-I n.html
I have never had a conflict with Flip4Mac Pro and iWeb. I spend hours every week maintaining a very large .wmv media site for my church using Flip Pro to create all of my .wmv movie files and iWeb as my editor. If there were conflict issues, I would have indeed experienced them.
I use iWeb Enhancer to embed the html code to call the Windows Media Player and .wmv files.
The code used to play the embeded .wmv movie in the example above is listed here:
    <!--BeginHTMLData--><object id="MediaPlayer" width=580 height=435 classid="CLSID:22D6f312-B0F6-11D0-94AB-0080C74C7E95" standby="Loading Windows Media Player components..." type="application/x-oleobject" codebase="http://activex.microsoft.com/activex/controls/mplayer/en/nsmp2inf.cab #Version=6,4,7,1112">
    <param name="filename" value=”http://71.18.250.184/ALMMediaSite/wmv/JesusGodWithUs/lead out.wmv">
<param name="Showcontrols" value="True">
<param name="autoStart" value="True">
    <embed type="application/x-mplayer2" src="http://71.18.250.184/ALMMediaSite/wmv/JesusGodWithUs/lead out.wmv" name="MediaPlayer" width=580 height=435></embed>
    </object>
Change the "http://......wmv" strings in the 2nd and 3rd paragraphs to match the server path to the .wmv file you want to play. Also, change height/width measurments to match the size of the iWeb Enhancer box that you create inside the iWeb page. If the sizing measurments are different in the code above from the size of your iWeb Enhancer box, the embedded movie box will not be positioned correctly in the iWeb page.

  • Compressor Compression Question

I have a huge QuickTime file that I output out of FCP 7, that is a 40 minute long presentation that mixes live video with Power Point slides. The video was shot using a Sony HXR-NX5U and the timeline used the ProRes422 codec. The final size of the movie out of FCP is 66.91 gigs, which I want to compress down to 2 gigs or less to post on YouTube.
What settings might I use in Compressor to achieve this? I'm looking to compress it as a QuickTime H.264 file.
    Thank you!

I'm running Final Cut Studio 3, with FCP 7. I know of the YouTube preset in Compressor, but will it automatically compress down to the size I need, or do I need to limit the data rate, or adjust any other settings?

  • Compression question for iDVD 6

Hi: I've got a avi file at 1.4 gig that I need to compress onto a single iDVD: can it be done, and if so, how do I do it?
    Many thanks

It may not be necessary to import the AVI file into iMovie, but that does often fix some problems.
AVIs, just like .MOV, are containers that can use many different codecs. iDVD likes some better than others, and hates any that have 12 bit audio. Going though iMovie (or QT pro) to convert to DV can fix this sometimes.
    So the real questions are:
    1) how long in minutes is that AVI file? If less than 2 hours, it should fit on on single layer DVD-R
2)what codecs are used inside that AVI file? If QT can read them, iDVD should be able to use them, unless they are muxed/or 12 bit audio.
If your AVI is less than 2 hours, try just dragging it into iDVD. USe "Save as Disk Image" to test it. If it works, then burn it! If not, then try converting first.
Realize that iDVD will re-compress anything it can read to MPEG2.

  • Timeline compressed

The timeline in one of my iMovies is all scrunched up to the left side. It's not really a problem when in the viewing mode but when I click on the L icon to work with the audio track it too is so compressed to the left I can not get into it. I have no Idea what caused this as it was fine a couple of months ago. I must have done something but can't remember what.
    Thanks

    Hello bigdukesix,
below the audio tracks, on the left hand side, there's a slider for setting the "compression" of the timeline. Simply drag it to the right until you have the desired "expansion".
    hope this helps

  • Timeline ripple question

Is there a way to apply a constant speed change to a clip and not have that clips duration update to the new length, rippling everything down the timeline?
There are times when I need to insert a clip into a pre-produced doughnut with set clip lengths. The footage I'm inserting needs to run at 50% - 70% speed starting at my IN point. The workaround at this point is to lock all the tracks and do the speed change on another unlocked track, and then unlock everything and drag the effected clip into the space.
Does my question make sense? Is there a way to do what I'm wanting to do?
    Thanks
    Van

If you are happy using 50% or don't want to do any extra math, figure out the duration of the space between the two clips it will be between. Let's say your gap has a duration of 1 sec. Load up the clip you want to change the speed on into the viewer. Set your inpoint, and set your duration to 15 frames. Now change the speed in the viewer (cmd j) to 50%. Your clip is now 1 sec long at 50%, a perfect fit for that gap you have. Easy for speeds of 50%, anything else you actually have to think about the math.
