Timeline Lag is horrendous

The timeline lag is painful on Premiere Pro 2014.( was equally horrible in the previous version)  Any time I bring a clip in or edit a clip the computer hangs until the timeline catches up.  Then maybe I can run through the timeline for a bit then it hangs up. The processing is extremely poor and almost unusable.  I am using:
Asus g74sx
8gb of ram
Nvidia 650m with 1.5 ram built in
2 hard drives one for the system and one for the files both are 7200 rpm
Any suggestions would be appreciated.  As another side note I purchased this computer video and photo editing only.  There is minimal programs on this machine.

l had a G73jw and edited successfully using PPro for years. Your trouble is probably a combination of hardware issues and trying to edit difficult, highly compressed codecs. If you cannot afford any upgrades, you can try using the now free Cineform codec available at GoPro to convert any difficult codec.
The easier to edit avi files will be huge, but, will run like butter through your cpu.
My laptop was destroyed by lightning and , like Bill Gehrke on this forum, I bought a refurbished Asus G750JW for $850....less than half normal price ! It blows away my old machine, esp. since I put two new Crucial SSDs in it.....upped the memory to 24 GB, and applied an overclock to the GPU memory using MSI Afterburner.....bringing it to 3000Mhz. Your machine needs to max out the reachable memory....there is one stick hidden under the keyboard you cant get to....I am assuming its 2GB..So, match the specs of the existing stick and put three new 4GB sticks to bring it to 14GB.
THEN,address your storage issues....C drive must be less than half full, be defragged, and only have OS,programs and page file on it. D must also be defragged and less than half full...indexing and compression turned off on both drives. All media and project files on D drive. Using your USB 3 port, you can attach a cheap USB 3 dock, and plug another drive in to it for previews, cache, and media cache files...no worry...premiere recreates these files,if needed. or, you can simply use the new Patriot hi speed USB3 thumb drive....reads at 190 MB/sec !!!
The newest 2014 CCloud PPro has massive improvements over previous versions in performance.....they fixed the problem with DSLR Canon mov file footage....no more 32 bit hampering....it runs like butter. Also,it contains better 4K performance.  Without Windows 8.1, I am not sure how well upgrading your machine would go...if you are serious about editing....this is the time to plan a new machine. This fall, the new Haswell E chip comes out...many huge improvements with that.....take THAT road, if you can !
......I almost forgot...make sure your timeline specs MATCH the footage you are putting on it....if you are unsure, drag a clip onto the " new item" icon, and it will create a matching sequence FOR you ! A mismatched sequence can make problems.
In general, the new PPro is so powerful that to fully use its capabilities, you need a machine with a minimum of 32GB system memory, fast SATA III SSDs,or, RAID array for storage and a beefy NVidia 7 xx series video card, ( 780ti is ideal ).

  • Timeline Lagging in Playback

So I have an issue with Adobe Audition CS6.  When I playback ANY audio file and watch it in the timeline the timeline lags.  Either the waveform or the spectral display, the video is always lagging behind the audio.  I can't find any answer to this anywhere.  And it isn't a consisten lag either.  It gets wors as time goes by.  It seems like for ever fifteen seconds of playback the timeline lags behind the audio an extra second.  So at a minute it is four seconds behind.  When I stop and start it catches up but the lagging builds again.
I'm at a total loss now.  Thank you for any help.

The first thing to ask is whether you've installed the 5.0.2 update? If you haven't, you can find it here (assuming you're a Windows user). This resolves a number of issues, and really is the first thing you should try.

  • Why does playback on the timeline lag on my premiere elements 9 project?

Whenever I playback my edit on the timeline, it starts off playing fine, but after a few seconds it starts to lag. I am using a macbook pro (2.4GHz intel core 2 duo processor, OS X V10.9.4), and was initially editing off a WD hard drive connected with a Firewire800 cable. I have shifted all my rushes and the premiere elements project file from the hard drive to my laptop, but that doesn't seem to work. Project settings and Clip settings seem to match, otherwise I wouldn't be able to open the project file anyway. I fiddled with some of the playback settings, but nothing seemed to work. I need to rush out a piece of work asap. Any ideas?

    AT Romano,
Please see my actions taken regarding your questions below:
One of my questions was attempting to determine if the total duration of clips on the Timeline has any effect on this random playback issue.
Am I correct in assuming that you are saying that this Timeline playback lag can be seen even with only one 1 minute clip on the Timeline? If not,
how many clips needed on that Timeline when the Timeline content playback starts to lag?
The lag can also be seen with only one 1 minute clip on the timeline.
If you start a new project with a different video source or just some jpg photos do you run into this Timeline content playback lag after rendering of that
    Timeline content?
NO, this lag does not occur with a new project with different video source.
Did you understand what I wrote early on about Premiere Elements 9.0/9.0.1 being a 32 bit application when run on 32 or 64 bit computer? Do you use the computer for programs other than Premiere Elements? I asked since you wrote
Upgraded the RAM. I'm now running on 2x 8GB of RAM.
A 32 bit system is typically characterized by maximum supported installed RAM = 4 GB and typically 3.2 to 3.0 or less of that being available. So, why the upgrade to 16 GB of installed RAM?
I guess I didn't quite understand the 32 bit system thing. But i kinda get the idea now. In any case, my computer seems to be running faster than usual even though it didn't solve the elements 9 lagging issue.
    Just recap time....
    1. Optimize the computer with free ccleaner for Mac run through
    CCleaner - Download
    Done.
    2. Make sure that there are no pile ups of preview files, conformed audio, and conformed video files. At this time, how much
free hard drive space at the location where the Scratch Disks are directed?
Done. About 870GB of free HD space. This is an external hard drive.
    3. Set Playback Quality to highest instead of automatic
Did this, but the lagging becomes worse. It freezes longer on certain frames.
    4. Make sure video card/graphics card driver is up to date according to web site of manufacturer of the card
According to Manufacturer, graphic cards installed on MacBook Pros are already optimised by Apple during the installation.
    5. If dual monitor system, disconnect one, use only one
I am monitoring only from my laptop screen. No external monitors.
    6. Delete the Adobe Premiere Elements Prefs file...
    Users/Libraries/Application Support/Adobe/Premiere Elements/9.0
I cannot seem to find this file.
    7. Export the lagging Timeline content to an appropriate file saved to the computer hard drive. Then determine if the playback of the export
    exhibits any lags.
After export, there are no lags.
    8. Do you run into the problem with and without the antivirus disabled?
I have no antivirus installed. But i did try turning on and off the firewall. With the firewall on, the lag seemed to get worse.
    9. For troubleshooting purposes only at this time, download and install the free 30 day tryout of Premiere Elements 12
from Adobe....If it works for you, then we can target version 9....If it does not work for you, then we can target your computer.
There is no Premiere elements 12 available for trial download. Only premiere elements 13. Have downloaded that and copied the project file into elements 13. The lag is still there, but not as bad. But, it is still there.

  • AE CC timeline lag & not realtime preview (Win7 GTX Titan)

As of a few days ago I'm suddenly experiencing lag when navigating around, scrubbing the timeline (as in cursor movement), using keyboard shortcuts, drag selecting keyframes etc.
Also RAM preview occasionally shows a red warning its not playing back in realtime.
This is a pretty new system that I'm only starting to use in anger and all has seemed fine until a few days ago, and I haven't updated anything to my knowledge.
I've an SSD for system disk, dedicated SSD for AE cache, 2 x HDD (1 for projects, 1 to render to).
I've deleted my preferences and purged all the cache several times and still have issues.
A new empty project seems fine, but if I make a new comp and add a new layer it starts to lag if I CTRL-D duplicate the layers (after about 20) and try to CTRL-A and expand a property (e.g position P)
As I say I've been working on a few proejct with lots of layers over the past month and not experienced the lag (though I have the red RAM preview warning)
I'm baffled as everything has seemed fine until very recently and I'm not aware of updating anything prior to noticing this issue.
    Any ideas anyone?

Update: as a test I installed AE CS6 (after I'd finally managed to locate the download link!) and initial tests don't result in the same problems as CC. (This is both with and without the CS6 raytracer file modified to accept the Titan).
I can easily replicated the problem in CC:
    1) New comp (1920x1080)
    2) New solid layer - scrub timeline back and forth, fine no lag.
    3) Duplicate layer - scrub timeline back and forth, fine no lag.
    4) Duplicate layer a few more times - scrub timeline back and forth, start to notice lag
    5) Repeat duplicate layer and I'll start getting delay in the duping process.
    6) Get to about 30 layers and lag increases - scrub timeline back and forth, noticeable lag.
    7) CTRL-A (delay), P (delay), click for keyframe (delay) scrub timeline back and forth, noticeable lag.
This has now made CC pretty unusable, but it was fine (bar occasional slow RAM preview playback) a few days ago!
Please don't tell me I have to roll back to CS6....

  • Timeline lag when scrubbing

I just noticed after importing my mpeg2 into the timeline, whenever I scrub the timeline it lags a great deal. I have updated my graphics driver, and it still lags. I am using an HP Z400, 12 G of Ram, Intel Xeon, W7 64 Bit, with Nvidia Quadro FX 3800 ( driver just updated). Now we did update our Tricaster 855, we now record mpeg 2 4:2:2. Could that be the issue? All of the mpeg2 4:2:2 have a lag when imported into Premiere btw.

  • Premiere Pro CC v8.1 - Timeline Lag after update

So my system is pretty fast, and it's becoming a trend that with every CC update, the program seems to work slower and slower, to the point where now I'm getting lag for simple tasks such as dragging the edge of a clip for trimming, or positioning a clip in the program monitor (whether dragging manually or altering the number values. The lag is very large, sometimes waiting up to 15 seconds before the command can complete. I'm working on a feature film shot in 5K on the RED Epic. I've cleaned my cache, I have rendering set to Memory, not Performance (I've tried it both ways and it doesn't make a difference). Shared RAM memory is 63.9 for Premiere Pro among other shared applications. Sequence settings match the footage. I just don't know what else to do at this point.
    Here are my specs:
    Windows 8.1 Pro 64-Bit
    Premiere Pro CC 2014 v8.1
    Intel Core i7-3820 CPU @ 3.6Ghz (8 CPUs)
    64GB  Hyper Ram 1600MHz
    Sapphire Radeon Vapor-X R9 290 4GB GDDR5
Premiere runs off the Boot Drive, footage runs from external drives connected via USB 3.0.

    Hang reports are stored at:
    /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/ <application-name><hang-date>hang
For normal application crashes spindump will display a dialog to alert the console user to the crash and offer the choice to view more details about the crash and/or report the crash to Apple.

  • AfterFX CS6, Timeline Mouse-Lag! (with video description, vimeo)

I created a video of the problem and uploaded it to my vimeo account. Hope it helps to understand:
    http://vimeo.com/43892712
    Windows 7 Pro 64bit
    Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz
    8GB Ram
    Nvidia GTX 580 Phantom
    256 Samsung SSD
Supertalent SSD (Dedicated to Adobe Media Cache and Windows Temp file)
3 HDD(dedicated to Video and Project and exports)
This is a fresh and clean install on the new Samsung SSD (latest firmware), AHCI enabled.
Only system drivers and the whole Production Premium CS6 are installed.
    Problem:
There is a clear Mouse lag while clicking and selecting/marking things in the timeline window. The more layers I have and the more keyframes are shown, the bigger the mouse lag is. It is even bigger than in the video with other comps I have.
This happened to me in CS4 (but I guess that was due to an issue with the wacom tablet driver that supposedly was solved with CS5).
But the driver and Wacom tablet aren't even installed yet, and I experienced this lag with CS4, CS5, CS5.5 and now CS6. Even though it was stated that the GUI is accelerated a lot in this release (via an Nvidia GPU). So I bought a new Nvidia Card (GTX 580), and indeed working is more fun now, but the timeline lag still appears. Before I had an GTX 260.
Turning on or off the preference "Hardware accelerate panels" doesn't do any difference. Also "Use multi CPU rendering" doesn't help the lag.
Is this the old processor Core 2 Quad @ 2.4 and the old SATA2 Bus? I'm willing to invest into a new Ivy Bridge CPU and 32GB of RAM (and a new mainboard), but I already did invest into a new GPU , a new SSD, new CS6 (which is supposed to drew faster on the screen in AFX). And it didn't really help the lag issue. SO I just don't want to get disappointed again.
I also tried a different mouse (PS2 cable), but that didn't help either.
    Anybody having the same issues?
    Any advice or help, please?
    Thanx,
    Martin

    (Sorry to double post)
A couple of other aspects of my AE are a bit off. I have a feeling this may all be interconnected, as they are all GUI related. These other issues are of little consequence, but if it is indeed all connected, it may help troubleshoot the issue.
Firstly is the behavior of scriptUI panels. My AE struggles when drawing ScriptUI panels, sometimes takes 4+ seconds to load the panel, sometimes (rarely) the panel doesnt show at all, throwing an error (I cant remember the exact error). I also get a slight lag when clicking dropdowns and interacting with all ScriptUI panels.
Furthermore, after my inital install, the CTI updates very slowly while RAM Previewing (it's fine while scrubbing). I solved this issue with a bit of help from this thread. It turns out in my AE prefs I had "Time needle update frequency (seconds)" = "0.250000", changing the value to 0.05000 fixed the issue. In that thread it was suggested that perhaps AE automatically set this value on first launch- based off its understanding of the system capability (to save on resources)... If this is correct, AE obviously failed to make a correct evaluation of the system's capability... I wonder what else it "got wrong"?
I just had a look through the prefs file (C:\Users\UserName\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\After Effects\11.0\Adobe After Effects 11.0-x64 Prefs.txt)
There's a bunch of stuff in there, but not knowing "what-does-what" I dont want to mess around in there just yet.
Has anyone else suffering from our timeline issues experienced anything like the above?
    Update:
Okay, finally some feedback from After Effects.
Today when launching after effects it has crashed with the following error
This article from Adobe explains the use of GPU in AECS6
OpenGL, the GPU, and After Effects CS6
You'll notice toward the bottom of the article, Level 2 hardware requirment covers hardware acceleration of of composition, layer and footage panels.
Im thinking this really is a problem with AE + GPU. This might explain why swithcing hardware accelerated panels doesnt make any difference to our problem... perhaps its just not working at all. any thoughts?

  • Audio playback slows to around 80% in the timeline for no apparent reason

Using FCP Studio 2 and halfway through editing a project, the audio playback in the timeline lagged to around 80% and made editing impossible. It just happened for no apparent reason. I've tried deleting preferences and that doesn't help.
Strangely when I select the audio file from the bin it plays at normal speed in the canvas.
The same thing happened to a project on my MacBook Pro. It's making life very difficult!! PLEASE HELP!

Have you tried trashing your render files (Tools > Render Manager) and re-rendering?

  • Premiere Elements 12 will only render some of my footage?

Premiere Elements 12 will only allow me to render some of my footage while it won't render other footage at all. The footage it renders has a green line above it in the work space and no line is above the footage that won't render. I'm using a MacBook Pro and a LaCie external hard drive to import my footage and save my project. Any suggestions? Thank you!

    1. Premiere Elements 12 on Mac. Have you updated from 12 to 12.1 yet - Help Menu/Update within a opened project? If not, please do so.
    I updated to 12.1
    2. What are the properties of what you are putting on the Expert workspace Timeline?
Especially, if at all, how do the properties of the files displaying no Timeline lags and stops compare to the properties of the files that are presenting with Timeline lags and stops.
All of the content is in .mov format
    3. What are you or the project setting as the project preset? To confirm, please tell us what you find Edit Menu/Project Settings/General and the Editing mode, Timebase, Frame Size, Pixel Aspect Ratio readings, even if they look grayed out?
    Editing mode is "HDV 1080i"
    Timebase is "29.97 frames/second"
Frame size is "1440 horizontal 1080 vertical"
Pixel Aspect Ratio is "HD Anamorphic 1080 (1.33)"
    4. What is the duration of the Timeline when the lags and stops begin....are these lags and stops related to the time on the Timeline or to specific files....if these problem files were moved to another part of the Timeline, would they still be problem files?
The lags and stops begin at approximately 24 seconds of the timeline, but when I move this content to another part of the timeline the lags and stops begin where this first problem file begin. The lags and stops are most likely related to specific files, however that doesn't make sense since some .mov files don't lag/stop while other .mov files do lag/stop. The files are still problem files even when moved to another part of the timeline.
    5. Are there transitions applied to the Timeline content? What effects are you adding to clips?
There are no transitions applied to the timeline content. I've only added a fast-forward effect to one clip (a clip that rendered fine and doesn't lag/stop) in my project thus far.

  • Drop frames on external monitor

Hi, recently im having some troubles with cc 7.2.1, one of them is when i have cuda enabled i have droped frames on my external and program monitor, but the timeline is fast and i can edit, im editing a short documentary with 4 hours of footage in h264 from 5D an 7 D, on a usb 3 external. I have a macbook pro (late 2013) 16G ram , i 7, mavericks osx.
When i select software only i dont have drop frames on my external but i can't edit, because everything on the timeline lags. Image takes a long time to load on the program monitor and external monitor, impossible to do trim, takes ages for images with time code to apear.
When scrubing on the timeline, the CTI takes a lot of time to catch up. It seems like she is connected to a ruber band, it moves back before moving to my selected position!!
Do you guys think deleting cache and preferences will help? ( how can i delete them ?)
    Thanks

    Hi,
I was wondering if there had been any progress on this?  I'm experiencing a similar problem myself with my MacBook Pro (Late 2013, i7, Nvidia 750M) in that I'm getting dropped frames when using an external monitor.  My set up may be slightly different though but the results appear similar.
My timeline, program and source windows are all on the external monitor (Samsung SA850) connected via thunderbolt to mini display port.  The playback monitor window is set to full screen on the MacBook pro and that is where the dropped frames occur. If I unselect using a playback monitor and just use the external Samsung as described, things appear fine.
I'm editing a mixture of H264 and ProRes clips on an hour long timeline with nested sequences.
Any advice on possible solutions or things to try in order to troubleshoot would be much appreciated.
    Many Thanks.

  • PPro Performance Variance on Mac Pro 2013: CC Version 7.0 vs. Version 8.0

    Hi,
I've been editing on a late 2013 Mac Pro model with Yosemite (see system specs in the JPEG below). I have really mixed results editing with the most up to date version of Premiere Pro CC. Playback in a timeline lags significantly with 4K and standard HD 1080p media and the software crashes more often than I would like. I have tried a few things like checking the permissions status of varying media and project folders. I do not use GPU-based rendering as that has been problematic, creating pink lines etc. in the resulting previews and exports. Even after previews are rendered for a timeline, playback still lags regardless of media resolution.
In general, as a Premiere project becomes more complex, crashes become more frequent and playback lags even more. Dynamic Linking with AE causes so many crashes that is basically not functional. The only plug-ins I'm using are Magic Bullet and FilmConvert.
I'm not a huge fan of the shift in workflow/edit logic in FCP X, and want to avoid making that transition if I can. In an attempt to test the varied performance of Premiere, I have reverted to a previous version, CC 7.0. MY initial testing shows that this version renders previews more quickly (still without GPU assistance) and playback seems to lag less. Of course I imported an XML from a project originating in V. 8.0 and there are a few translation issues mostly related to warp stabilizing and color correction, which can be fixed if the overall performance boost is greater.
I have read a handful of forums of users experiencing similar or even more drastic difficulty running Premiere on a new MacPro platform. I have explored some of the troubleshoots suggested, but no major changes in performance. It seems to be hit or miss in terms of Premiere/MacPros playing well together. Strange that no one factor can seem to be pinpointed.
Has anyone else been fiddling with this option of using a previous version of Premiere on a Mac Pro? Any success? Other suggestions to improve performance in the latest version?
    Thanks!

I just had an interesting thought.
I use the method of dragging a clip to the "new item" button to create a matching sequence of my majority media type for a project. Have there been any bugs or issues reported with this technique on the latest version of Premiere Pro CC? This is a possibility I haven't yet explored in terms of the issues I am experiencing with playback. When this thought dawned on me today, I took a look at my sequence settings in a troublesome clip, and am not sure it quite matches up. In this example, details in screenshot below, my majority footage was shot on a Canon XA20. The resulting sequence is using at ARRI Cinema editing mode. That seems to be a mis-match, but maybe not? Thoughts? Suggestions? Helpful resources about "editing modes" and optimization for playback? Any help appreciated. Thanks!

  • PPro CS 5.5 and Kona LHi Card on Mac

    Hi all,
After a couple of years on FCP it looks like we're switching back to  PPro. I have a Kona LHi card on my MacPro 4.1, (2009) an NVidia GTX285  card and 16GB RAM. I have the latest 9.0.1 Drivers and am using the  latest AJA Adobe utilities.
I have major lagging issues within PPro 5.5 just moving clips around on  the timeline. My audio is very laggy and drops out on occasion, my video  is laggy and jittery when scrubbing the timeline and PPro's general  responsiveness is woeful and virtually unusable.
Am I missing something here? Is this a problem with the LHi card on the  Mac or is it something to do with the AJA Adobe utilities or the GTX285 card? I am at a  loss.
Any help or knowledge would be deeply appreciated.
    TIA,
    Alex Hawkins
    Canberra, Australia

    Hi Alex,
Good to see you post this.  I have the *exact same situation and hardware as you (same Kona board, graphics card, MacPro 4,1, etc...) - and I have been having many problems as well.  Was excited to switch over to PPro from FCP (and I'm sure this is going to happen much more frequently now that FCPx is a bust) and had heard of all the speed improvements.  But I have had trouble with sluggish timelines (dragging clips around in the timeline lags far behind the cursor) , sluggish editing, dropping audio from the Kona card during cuts.  I am about to have some more conversations with AJA about this and also keep searching out clues here on the forums.
My question to you:  what kind of footage are you editing that gives you issues?  For me, it is H.264 coming from my Canon 5D.  Is it happening with all different kinds of codecs and footage?  Can you be a little more specific about the issues? (ie when do you experience the sluggishness and the audio dropouts?  Does it happen if you disable the Kona player and just use the Adobe player instead?)
I can post more of my findings as I get more time.  Hopefully we can track this down.
    Thanks,
    Danny

  • DVD Freezing for over 24 hours

    Hello...
    I hope someone can help.
I am making a DVD that contains a bunch of movie clips with enhanced audio (enhanced meaning that I imported the clip through AmadeusII and aplified the audio portion, and then saved the audio in AIFF format and then imported the audio into iMovie). I've paired up the movie clip with audio, placed markers every three or four minutes apart, etc. where needed, and have tried to burn the DVD through iDVD. Each time I do this, it gets stuck on "encoding audio". I realize that the "encoding audio" takes a while, but it has always only taken not more than six hours. Twice I've left it to burn, and it has taken over 24 hours. This last time I started the burning process yesterday at 3:30....it is now the next day at 3:38, and it is still frozen in the "encoding audio" section of the program.
I think I should mention that before I burn to iDVD, I play the movie back through the timeline, and each time I do that, the audio begins to lag behind the actual movie by about 6 to 20 frames. I supposed that's the cause of the freezing to "encoding audio". What the heck happened and how do I rectify that? Why is it taking so long to burn my DVD and/or why is the audio portion of the iMovie when played back through the timeline lagging so far behind and not staying true to the movie frame?
Thanks. I hope I hear from someone.
    -Susan

Was your camcorder set to record 16-bit audio? 12-bit causes trouble like this.
Try extracting audio in iMovie. Read iMovie Help on how to do that.
You could Share (export) the movie as QuickTime Full Quality and drag that file into a new iDVD project. You will lose chapter markers, if you have them.
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save as Disc Image...

This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. If you hold your mouse cursor over the pop-up it says: "Select a slower speed to work around burn failures," so select 4x or slower for best results. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • Cc 7.2.1 lags on timeline and program monitor, and drop frames.

Hello guys i have cc 7.2.1, and every basic operation i do on the timeline , moving clips, trimiming, scrubing on the timeline everything lags, its not fluid. When i do a simple scrubring on the timeline, the CTI takes sometime to get to the position i selected to do the playback.
But the worst part is the trimming or moving clips, it takes ages before i get an image on the program monitor. If i move a clip into a middle of 2 clips it takes ages to see those two little privews images with timecode, to see where to put it. So is very hard to edit like this.
Another odd thing is when in redering mode i select to use sofware only i dont have drop frames, when i chose cuda i have drop frames!!
I´m editing h254 from a 5d and 7d on externa llaccie usb 3 , have the a macbookpro 16g i7, iris pro and nvidia 750m, and a external samsung, via DVI.
    Anny sugestions?
    thank you.

    Thanks for the Tips.
One thing that i discoverd was, when software only is enabled i can't edit. Everything as that lag i reported above, but i have no drop frames with external monitor.
Now comes the funny part, when i enable CUDA for my Nvidia gt 750m, i can edit !!! everything becomes almost normal, image on program monitor comes quick, and i can do trims. BUT i have drop frames on external monitor!!!!! so therefore i cant have a proper edit enviroment.
The only solution is to edit without an external monitor with cuda enabled, that way i dont have drop frames. I guess this is a syntom, that something is not working well on CC 7.2.1.
    Thank you all.
