Sometimes the timeline moves, sometimes the playhead moves.  How can I control which moves?

  • Timeline playhead indicator bar freezes

after editing in several speed changes to clips in timeline, playhead
indicator bar freezes, video continues to play out normaly in canvas.
only after rebooting FCP does playhead bar start moving normally again.
    cant figure it out.

Are those speed changes rendered yet? FCP does a LOT of things with active ram-- it's keeping track of every clip, subclip, sequence, nest; creates virtual media out of imported still images. That frozen bar is a pretty good indicator that you've maxed out the ram available to FCP. Restart the app or a complete reboot usually fixes this. render early and often!

  • FinalCutPro Timeline playhead jumps to begining at end of last clip?

I want the playhead to stop playing when it reaches the end of the last clip instead of jumping back to Timeline 00:00 and continuing to play from there??

Disable "Loop Playback". Keyboard shortcut is Control L.

  • Timeline playhead goes back to beginning when it hits end

Is there a preference or something somewhere I need to
turn off to prevent the playhead in the timeline from
going back to the beginning of the timeline and start
playing again from the beginning, after it plays through
the entire timeline once and it's the end?
    Thanks.

Why not mark it as 'Answered' (which you should do anyway) then post what you did to fix it. That would help others who encounter the same problem.
    Ctrl+L toggles timeline looping.

  • Duplicating layer timeline playhead bug

    Hi,
I'm using Photoshop CC animation feature with the timeline (terrific feature btw), and I have a bug report... didn't find anywhere to resolve it, so I'm reporting it here :
While working on the timeline, if my play head is not on the right time (active layer is not visible in the timeline (cf. screen capture)),
and if I try to duplicate the active layer from the layer palette, Photoshop gives me a program error modal window, and doesn't give me any choice by clicking ok again and again in a loop, the error stays there, the only solution is to force quit Photoshop.... no saving possible !!

Adobe please, do repair this, I keep on stress-saving my file all the time, since I often do this action...
    Thanks

I see what the problem is. The project start time is one hour. In legacy versions if you typed 100 it always went to one second, you didn't have to type in the one hour no minutes one second to move the playhead.

  • Laggy timeline, playhead line not lined up with playhead after 8.1 update!

Is anyone else experiencing this??? See attached screen shot. The white line is sticking all over the time indicator resulting in what you see below, also, the playhead line is not actually lined with the playhead itself, making frame edits completely impossible! It is driving me crazy. Have cleared all caches and deleted all preview files though this is clearly not causing this. It would seem to be a graphics card/driver issue with PP 8.1 as everything was working just fine before I applied the update this morning......silly me :-/ I am running a Windows 7 Pro 64bit, 24 core workstation with 64GB of RAM and a Quadro 5000 GPU with 2GB RAM. Help!

I'm having the exact same issue - again only since updating to the latest version. So I too am interested in a solution!
In my case I have Quadro K1000M graphics - no warp stabiliser , and it's already switched to software-only.

I'm colour correcting and want to move the playhead quickly to each video clip.
I wondered if there's any way to get the playhead to ignore audio clips and simply jump to the next video clip?

  • Sync up clips in the timeline.

    Hi
Is their a way to import clip in the timeline to their specific timecode, I have a whole lot of clip and I want to send them to the timecode they already have in the timeline. Is it possible? I haven't found any answers in the rest of the forum.
    Thanks

    select the timeline window
    enter the timecode you need (eg01252210 for 1hr 25m 22s 10fr)
    press enter
the timeline playhead will now be positioned at the timecode you entered
perfom the edit type you want; overwrite insert or replace and the clip will be placed where the playhead is parked

  • Retaining IN or OUT points in timeline after the edit?

Is there a way of making either an insert or overwrite edit into
the timeline, and after having completed the edit, RETAINING
either the IN or OUT points in the timeline that you used for that previous edit, or BOTH, so you don't have to set them again, for subsequent edits that might need either the IN or OUT point? Lets assume you made that first edit by setting
IN and OUT points in the timeline, rather than just leaving the timeline playhead
in a spot on the timeline and set the outpoint on the source footage of the viewer.
Lets assume you actually placed IN and OUT points in the timeline to acheive that
    last edit.
I know you can just set the playhead somewhere on that clip
you just inserted and hit X To get the in and out points of the
clip you just inserted, but can you accomplish the same thing
without having to "restore" the in and points in this manner?
    Thanks.

Can't think of any way. You're way ahead of most people if you know about typing X to select the clip under the Playhead. That's the best way. There's also Mark to Markers (Control-A), but that's even more steps. In some cases that might be of help. You have to watch out for selecting the first frame of the NEXT clip when setting the end marker, though. If you use Down Arrow to get to the end of a clip, you're actually one frame into the next clip. Use Left Arrow to back up one.

  • Without Mouse: Toggle between selected timeline video clips- Keyboard Only Method

Simple Question, but can't able to find the answer on  internet.
How do I select the timeline video clip without clicking on it with mouse help?
All I  want to do is, select the video with keyboard only. And switch the cam layer on cut. In other words toggle the selected clip on cut points, with keyboard only.
    Thank you all
    Max

I'm not sure exactly what you mean when you say "the timeline video clip" but here are a few keyboard shortcuts that may help: the q key toggles between the Timeline and the Viewer windows; if the Timeline window is active, the up arrow key moves the Timeline playhead to the previous edit; the down arrow key moves the Timeline playhead to the next edit.
You can find more here: http://documentation.apple.com/search/#q=keyboard%20shortcuts and here: https://www.google.com/search?client=opera&q=fcp+7+keyboard+shortcuts&sourceid=o pera&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&channel=suggest

  • Please advise: create chapters and create navigation menu

    Hi,
relatively new to FCP I'm trying to create three chapters in a 1.5 hr. movie. Can someone tell me how to create 3 separate chapters, each preceded by it's owner chapter page.
I want to create a navigation menu from these chapters, that will be included on the DVD so that viewers can navigate immediately to either of these chapters.
I find the FCP manual rather confusing. Any help will be greatly appreciated !!!!
    THNX
    Wim
    [email protected]

In FCP, you create chapter markers by first making sure that none of the clips are selected, then place the Timeline playhead where you want the chapter marker to be located, then hit the m key twice. A marker dialog window will open; give the chapter a name if you like (optional), then click the Chapter button in the dialog window.
Once you're finished with that (all editing should be completed before chapter markers are added), go to File-Export->QuickTime Movie. Include DVD Studio Pro markers in the drop-down menu.
Once in DVD Studio Pro, create the menu(s) you want to use, or import them if you created the menus in another application like Motion or Photoshop. Link to menu buttons to the chapters.
You should be able to find any number of tutorials online regarding this subject, as well as plenty of information in the DVD-SP user's manual/help files.

  • Multiclip Editing.....AHHHHHHH!!!

    Hey everyone!
I just got done doing a 3 camera shoot. All the footage was shot to MiniDV Format, but due to the equipment, we don't have the luxury of having one master timecode across all three tapes. There are six tapes in all (3 cameras x 60 minutes @, 80 minute shoot). I put all six tapes in one multiclip.
When working with multiclips, the FCP user manual lists a way to sync clips together by using CtrlShiftClick and dragging. This is great if the clip is only out of sync by a few frames or seconds...... what if it is out of sync by 30 or 40 minutes? Is there a faster way? Again, I don't have the luxury of having master timecode. To make matters worse, for some reason, this clip's source TC reset to zero when it should be approx 00:40:00;00. Anyone have any tricks? Thanks! :-D

If this is all correct, then do this.
-Create a new sequence - name it 'multiclip test' or something similar.
-drop your uninterrupted audio clip on A1/A2 (then deselect the audio buttons so you don't overwrite it)
-In the browser, scroll to the 'Angle' column and type in 'A' for Cam1/Tape1, then 'B' for Cam2/Tape1 and 'C' for Cam3/Tape1.
-scroll back to the clip and dbl-click Cam1/Tape1
-set an inpoint where it will sync with your first frame of audio in the timeline (make a marker and name it 'Cam1Tape1 SyncIn'
-Do the same for Cam2/Tape1 and Cam3/Tape1
-Now, select all 3 of these clips
-Hit and hold the 'Control' button...while holding it down, click on any of the 3 selected clips and choose 'Make Multiclip' (Make sure 'Synchronizing using In Points' is selected.
-Make sure your timeline playhead is at the first frame (or where you know the 3 selected cam clips will sync with audio)
-Dbl-click the newly created multi-clip and hit F10 (overright)
Now do exactly the same with your Cam1-3/Take2 clips. (the only difference being that you will place an inpoint on your timeline/sequence, where you know all 3 of these take2 clips will sync with audio)
You might also drop the second multiclip on V2...this way you could overlap both multiclips before/after your second sync point on the timeline to find cover shots while your cameras were changing tapes.
    Make sense?

  • Disabling the Open button in the JFileChooser dialog

    Hi,
I would like to enable/disable the Open button in the JFileChooser dialog, after the dialog is shown.
I looked at the Java APIs but I could not find a method that gives me the access to this button.
Could anyone let me know how to either retrieve the Open button from the JFileChooser or enable/disable it through Java APIs?
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul Rodziewicz

As I'm editing with multiclips in my sequence, if I select "open" from the middle pulldown menu in the canvas or viewer, it will open the multiclip in the viewer and play it in sync with my timeline playhead (like the gang feature). I.E. so I can hit play in my timeline, watch the multiclip in the viewer real time, and make edits (to the clip in the timeline) as I watch. My issue is that the syncing of the viewer playhead and the timeline playhead often break when deleting clips and I constantly have to reselect the "open" button, and it would be way nicer if there was a shortcut key instead of having to mouse it. It only takes a second to use your mouse and select "open" but when you have to do it constantly, it makes you wish for a quick key.

  • Some Questions on Advanced Actions window

    HI
I have a couple of questions on Advanced Actions (using the CP7 trail version)
    1. What's the function of the "Continue" action?   Exit's the advanced action and advances the Playhead?
    2. What does this comment mean "Nested calls of advanced action is a nice enhancement."? Is the decision tabs at the top of an advanced action page?
    3. What's the function of the "custom" option in the IF statement - "preform action if - custom", it doesn't seem to do anything for me?
    4. Where can i get information about timeline / playhead interaction with advanced actions i.e. where the playhead goes to the start of the slide again. e.g. custom question slide - displaying button, checking answers, feedback - when all/most objects are at the start of the timeline. I'm looking more for playhead functionality infromation rather than how to set up this type of question.
    Thanks
    Donal.

    Hi Lilybiri,
Thanks for your reply and the link to your blog.
Continue: Can you just explain yor statement "Continue can also be a choice in a conditional action, when one of the branching commands has nothing to do special but to advance.". When you say "branching command" i'm assuming you mean "IF ELSE statements" and "to advance" is that to the next decision if there is one? and if you didn't include "Continue" would it still advance?
Custom: I see what you mean the first is an AND statement and the rest are OR statements.
Nested advanced actions: I picked the term up from the Adobe web site comment by "Hari" on Shared Actions, who i took to be an Adobe person. Maybe i didn't understand the context.
    http://blogs.adobe.com/captivate/2013/07/shared-actions.html
On Demand: Is there an up to date link. I found this one but the latest recordings are May (advanced action - part 8), and there isn't much training after May so it may be while before your Shared Actions are uploaded.

  • Video Filters

I have some DV footage which is "over exposed".
To adjust the exposure I have followed the following directions:
    1. Drag a clip from the Browser to a video track on the Timeline.
    2. Position the Timeline playhead anywhere on the clip so that you can see the clip in the Canvas window.
    3. Select the cl;ip on the Timeline, and apply the Brightness and Contrast filter and the Proc Amp filter to it.
    4. Double-click the clip on the Timeline to open it in the Viewer.
    5. In the Viewer window, click the Filters tab.
    6. On the Filters tab, adjust each of the filters you just applied.
    7. To see how the newly color corrected clip plays, select it on the Timeline, choose Sequence -Render - Both. Then after Final Cut Pro completes the rendering process, position the playhead just before the clip on the Timeline and press the spacebar to play and view the clip.
Nothing happened when I adjusted each of the filters, nor when I Rendered or Played it back.
    What am I missing?
I ran Onyx to "maintain and organize things" but that didn't change anything.

    This is really really mysterious.
In FCP HD/4.5 There's a little button on the top-left of the timeline that says "RT"...the setting is under there, but to be honest, I find it unlikely that this is the source of your problem. You should be able to see changes to your clips instantly reflected in the Canvas window. Is it only filters that don't seem to be working? What happens if you double-click a clip in the timeline to open it in the Viewer, and then adjust the size or crop settings under the Motion tab? Are those changes instantly reflected in the Canvas window? Do the bars at the top of these 2 windows in which you are working say "Viewer" and "Canvas"?
