Timeline playing back very choppy over multiformat video.

Hi Guys,
I am editing some behind the scenes footage for a movie our studio is making. A lot of the media has come from different sources. Some red, some mpeg4 etc. The Mac i am using is a Quad Core Mac Pro... technically it should be powerful enough to play over all these fine. But even when everything is rendered, it is very choppy. So much so, that to check my audio is in synch for some of the action shots, i have to export it as a Quicktime and play it back and check it that way.
Now i have tried RT in unlimited and safe... but it still happens. Does anyone have any possible solutions at all?
Any help would be much appreciated,
thanks in advance.

Please give your full system specifications, what computer, what drives, what camera or deck, how everything's connected, what settings are on the media, what settings you're using in Final Cut, and finally what version of the software, of the OS, and of QuickTime you are using.

  • My iTunes is very choppy when watching videos

My iTunes is very choppy when watching videos.  I just dowloaded a couple shows and it stops then goes really fast when it play's.  Anyway to fix this?

Yes! I have the exact same issue. So I tried some things.
I am on Uvese (via wifi) and was trying to update the apps on my PC via itunes. Taking FOREVER. So i tired it directly from my iPhone 6 via wifi - same issue. Then I turned off wifi on the iPhone and updated over (ATT) LTE. That worked great. I am thinking it is a Uverse/ATT issue at this point.

  • How do I get audio to play back while I'm capturing video?

I'm looking to add an audio file to my project and have it play back while I'm capturing video from my MacBook's camera. That way I won't have to worry about lining up the audio and video, everything will be in sync because I recorded the video that way. In the video I will be playing guitar to the audio file, so the audio and video need to be lined up perfectly.
Is this possible? Should I go about doing it another way?
    Thanks

    Hi there
Look in the Timeline. Specifically the area where the names appear on the left side. Now look at the bottom. There you should see a small speaker icon. My guess is that you have clicked it to mute it. Jumps right out and literally SCREAMS it's muted, no?
Please report that as an issue to Adobe. Ask for a clearer indication!
    Cheers... Rick

  • When I play back newly burned disk the video is cut off on each side of the screen. It shows the entire display area in the pic window before i burn it.How can i fix this?

    Idvd
when i play back the newly burned disc, the image on the tv set is cut off on each side.( there is still room on each side of the tv set for the image to show but it is as if the movie was cut about 2-3 inches off on each side)  but not when i play it back on my computer?? Why is this and what can I do to fix it?

Also the tv set has wide and normal modes this does not change the loss of size. (I guess you can say it is cropped.)

  • CS6 - Why is my rendered timeline playing back as black/white and flipped vertically?

This doesn't make any sense. It only happens inside of the preview monitor in Premiere Pro CS6. When my footage isn't rendered yet, it plays back just fine, but when I go to render everything in the time line, it makes everything flipped vertically and black/white. When I export a render to a file, it's completely fine. This only happens in Premiere and not AE or Prelude.
I'm using a PC, Windows 7 64-bit. My computer has quad-core i7 running at 3.8ghz, 16GB of RAM, and a 1GB GPU. I just upgraded from CS4, where I never had any of these issues in Premiere. Thanks!

There have been other messages (not exactly like yours) indicating that CS6 is enough different that you will need to update your graphics card driver
Do NOT let Windows update do this... go directly to the nVidia or ATI site and find the most recent driver for your (un-named) 1Gig GPU

  • CS3: Exported .mov file plays back very slowly and choppy

    I'm exporting a 1020x574 stage to Quicktime, H.264 High
quality, no sound. The resulting video, no matter what size I make
it, always plays choppy at parts. It plays fine in Flash and as a
.swf, but the .mov lags badly.
    Any ideas what's going on?

Yes, that's the exact same problem I'm having. And I see the
same thing, where areas with more objects tweening and effects and
such have the lag. The thing is, when I play the .swf in the Flash
Player it runs without *any* lag, so it doesn't make sense to me
why lag is picked up when it records it for QT.
I have noticed that if I shrink my entire stage and export at
a smaller size, it runs without lag. That is not an option,
however, I need the larger size.
Well, that's disappointing. Next step is to try and find a
good screen video recorder and manually record the playback.

  • TS2509 play back very slow

Im using motion 4 and it's playing very slow

There are many reasons (too many to list) why Motion will run slow since it is not and never has been about *playing* video. It is about creating effects and titles FOR video. I've created projects where Motion will only get < 1 frame per second on playback (that usually means I have to *simplify* the project considerably...) The only way you can guarantee a smooth up-to-speed playback is to Export your project to video and play the video in a player like Quicktime Player. However, IF you have the RAM for it, Motion 4 will render as much of the timeline it can fit in the available RAM it has to playback with RAM Preview (command - R), usually, at full speed for as much as it can render. Motion 5 does not do as good a job at that.
Lights are notorious for slowing Motion down, especially if you have shadows turned on (Spot and Point lights.) If you have reflections turned on; if you have emitters with high birth rates; if you have a lot of layers in 3D space; if Motion Blur is enabled; and the list goes on and on...  You can temporarily turn off Lighting, Reflections, Shadows, and Depth of Field from the Render menu, which should help speed things up a little bit. You can turn off extra layers (isolate the view to a few specific objects at a time) to speed things up a little bit. But mostly, you're just going to have to get used to Motion slowing down as you progress through a project.

  • Rental play back very slow

I am having major delay on on my apple TV,  netflix works perfect and the speed on my wireless router is up to speed.  Movie rental are taking over an hour to play.   Any advise

The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

  • Screen rotation during music play back -- very annoying!

I hate that the screen rotates when playing music. I have an arm band holster (Griffin), and when I lift my arm to use the touch screen for commands, it rotates into album shuffle mode. Very annoying!
I'm trying to do something with the device and it goes into some kind of album choosing mode -- when I'm already more than happy with the play list I've created!
Would be very nice to be able to cancel that feature.
Why only album shuffle too? Why not play list shuffle? That's how I listen.

It doesn't appear if you tap the screen/artwork while the audiobook is playing?

  • Preview very choppy over wireless

I just had to force shutdown my macbook for the first time earlier today after trying to open a large tif over the wireless network. Fair enough that file was painfully large. I squashed it to a 5 meg jpeg and at least was able to load it after a longer delay than i'd hope for such a small file (versus copying it to a local hdd).
I tried actually moving around the image, zooming in and am dissapointed to see that at 100% view it pauses as i try to scroll around the image. The CPUs aren't even breaking a sweat, i can only assume bizarely that its not cached the file locally and is trying to get it over the network all the time.
Anyone comment on this? By forum title i assumed that this was the forum to use.
Otherwise i love preview, can't it be a bit smarter when working with files that aren't local? I think i'll resort to viewing the files on my browser, which works fine.. initial delay and then no problem at all. But i do think preview should cope with this too.

  • FCP 7, maverick, animation million+, iMac play back issue

I have 3 years old iMac, 8Mg RAM duo. poorly handled transparent overlay HD 1920by 1080. It would play and pause in the viewer preview window, slow rendering time. So I got my self the new iMac 27" with 16 MG of ram, quatro. The playback and rendering looks even worse.  Is it bad memory, computer itself, or Maverick is not compatible with FCP7?
    Thanks,

well yeah.  animation codec with alpha (or even without) is NOT a playback format.  It's an uncompressed format for working with full quality video with transparency.
HOWEVER, Apple ProRes 4444 can have an alpha channel and plays back on my system just fine.  As a matter of fact, it will actually play back while keying over background video in fcp7.

  • Canvas window - video plays back at different speeds from the timeline. Why

I've scanned 25 pages of topics but found nothing that mentioned this as a problem. When I play a sequence in the timeline, the video in the Canvas window slows down (and sometimes suddenly speeds up to catch up with the audio) About the audio, it sounds find regardless of how the video is playing back. if I hit the space bar to stop play back, the video snaps to the correct position.
    Any ideas why?
Sometthings I've noticed : If I restart my computer, the video tends to play back fine. But if I leave the program open and use it alot, the play back problem happens over time. If I make the canvas window tiny (25% size), the video plays fine but at 50% - I get video speed changes. (audio, always good)
Here is what Im using : The project is about 20 mins long. I have over 50 gigs of HD space (the Macs main drive) Im using FCP version 4.5 on a Dual G5. 2.5 GB of Ram.
Well thanks to any one who respones.

Does this happen in any other sequences within this FCP project? Or, for that matter, with any other projects on your FCP system?
And, to confirm, your media is running off your system drive? That is, your machine has only one hard drive on it, correct? (Partitioned or not)

  • Quicktime playback sometimes does not play back Video

Recently upgraded to Snow leopard. Problem appeared after upgrade.
On some, not all, quicktime videos, the play back only has audio, no video. Quicktime ver. 7.6.3.
I have tried to upgrade to 7.6.4, but the installer won't let me, says I already have QT 10 installed. Even after I delete QT10, I still can't install it. I have reinstalled snow Leopard, and quicktime twice. Visited the genius bar, all with no luck.
    Also have 3ivx MPEG-4 installed.
Any ideas? This is a problem because the videos of a tutorial DVD that I purchased only plays back some of the QT videos. The DVD works fine on an old PB G4.
    Thanks

Open one of the non working files using QuickTime Player (Utilities folder) and then open the Movie Inspector window.
My guess is the files use Flash (.swf) tracks. QuickTime Player higher than 7.3.1 no longer plays Flash tracks.
You can't install 7.6.4 on Snow Leopard.

  • Exported movie plays back fast

Hi all, new poster on the apple discusions forum but wondered if anybody out there could help me.
I created my first movie from iMovie last night, the footage is HD from A Sanyo Xacti 1000 camera (had problems getting the footage in the night before but thanks to these boards found a solution)
Anyway cut a quick movie exported to AppleTV, created my m4v file, played back on ATV and the video footage appears to be running fast, almost like it's dropping frames but smooth. Audio was fine too... Anyone got any bright ideas?
    Thanks tim

    Hi.
Best thing to do is to set Imovie'08's movie format to NTSC, even though the TV standard in the UK is PAL.
But since you work ith non intelaced footaged, this will just change the frame rate iMovie works with to 30fps (29.97 exactly) instead of 25.
Since all Xactis shoot at 29.97 or 59.94, this setting is much better for them.
And it totally eliminated any choppiness effect for me.
Beware though: changing the PAL/NTSC setting of iMovie from PAL to NTSC made very strange results in edited movies (offset edits) when iMovie came out. I do not know if this has been corrected in the latest 7.1.1 version.
But you can always go back to your previous PAL setting and this eliminates all side effects, so there is no real downside trying.
I also have an HD1000 now and have had no problem with 60fps footage- and I now know how to output from iMovie at 60fps
Not sure if this has to do with it, but I do not use iMovie's import feature:
I create a folder for the new event in the ~/Movies/iMovie Events/, copy the .mp4s from the HD1000 to it, and then launch iMovie. IMovie then creates thumbnails and everything.
    Hope this helps.
I miss the good old times of miniDV, when everything just worked!

  • Dynamics audio effect glitchy. Audio plays back too softly.

    PP 7.1.0
    Mac OS X 10.8.4
Basic timeline. Three tracks of audio. One of the tracks is playing back VERY quietly. This track has a dynamics effect applied, with only the "limiter" function checked on (at -3db). Audio on this channel plays back too softly. A restart of premiere fixes the problem for a few moments, but then its back to soft again. Playing the clip in the source monitor plays it back at the correct volume. Turning the effect off altogether also plays the audio at the original (louder) volume - albeit minus the limiter. The waveform itself is plenty loud. But when the effect is engaged, the clip suddenly plays back about 15db quieter than it should.
    Any ideas?

    Hi T-MACK,
This may not be much help but I had the same problem. Inspection showed that I'd inadvertantly set the camera on long play when shooting the footage. It seemed fine when importing into imovie but playback appeared to be double speed. I posted a question on this forum but couldn't get a satisfactory solution. Re-setting the camera and reimporting didn't help. However, I borrowed a friends camcorder and reimported the same video from that. It worked. I can't see why but it did.
Perhaps sommeone will come up with a better answer.
    Regards
    Rob
