Timeline Poster Frame Missing

Hello
I inadvertently opened an FCP project with one of my Xserve RAIDS offline. When the project opened, media was reported missing. I quit FCP without saving the project, restarted the Xserve, and restarted FCP.
Now, the Poster Frame on the Timeline shows Media Offline, even though it is not. The "missing" media plays back perfectly.
So, my question is how to get the Poster Frame back on the timeline?
Thanks

Click on the timeline. press shift+Q to bring up system settings, see where your Thumbnail Cache is located, navigate to this folder, and trash it.
Or, just trash preferences.

  • Red Box: Poster Frames missing - Help please

    Directing/Editing a feature documentary.
I have come home from my trip to NYC to find about 5% of my poster frames in my assorted timelines are now red boxes...Is there a global way to reset this so that all my poster frames come back?...I have tried by Safe and Unlimited under the RT button in the assorted timelines, but that does not seem to make a difference.
I'd be grateful for your immediate advice.
    Thanks.

    Welcome to the family.
Open the manual or the online help system, look in the index for reconnect media.
That should do it but you haven't supplied much information.

  • I set a poster frame in the timeline, but the thmbnail in the menu does not update. Why?

I have used poster frames correctly in other projects before, also in encore cs6.
In this project, it's not working.
haveing had it working before, i'm sure its nothing to do with the OS, or media type, since that was the same in my previous projects. Any other ideas as to common causes?

I've seen weirdness on this one myself.  Usually changing the poster frame by a frame or two clears it up.
I've actually gotten into the habit of setting my poster frames before I make the chapter links.  That way it always works.

  • Missing Art and "Set Poster Frame" Images

Has anyone come across this yet? I have a very large library and since upgrading to iTunes8, well over 75% of the artwork or 'Set Poster Frame' images either have been found or I have created over the years does not show up in any of the iTunes view in the main window. All of the art is located in the correct "Album Artwork" folder. To make matters more confusing, it seems to be random as far as what files are effected. So it does not matter if it has been media that I have loaded in or something I have purchased from the iTunes Store. And to make matters more annoying, ALL the art work shows up in the "Now Playing" window. I have run the "Get Album Artwork" a couple of times to see if that would help but it has not. I have also randomly played various songs or movies to see it that would help iTunes find the art. That doesn't work either. Any Ideas?

I'm working on Twilight Zone right now. I'd like to have a different image for each episode: the broken glasses from "Time Enough at Last", or the gigantic alien from "To Serve Man"; i.e., an image that will reflect the content of THAT episode. Then, for the grid view, where you simply see the show names of all the shows you have (TZ Season 1, Season 2, etc.), I'd like the generalized 'box cover' image to display. I've tried right-clicking on the SHOW in the grid view, and then pasting an image into the "Artwork" box on the Info tab. I've then used the "Set Poster Frame" function (as outlined in the help section you cited in your reply) to choose a specific image from a specific episode. But iTunes won't retain my choices - it either shows the box cover image for all the episodes, or show the 'Poster Frame' from whichever episode I happened to first perform that function on. Thank you for your help.

  • Can Poster Frames flow in from Premiere 2.0?

If I am creating a timeline in Premiere 2.0 and then exporting as an AVI for import into Encore 2.0, I can mark chapters in Premiere and they will be included in the AVI file in Encore. However, Premiere does not seem to let me indicate poster frames for these chapters that will flow into Encore. Thus I have to create the poster frames in Encore. If I have to remake the file in Premiere, then I have to re-create the poster frames again when re-importing to Encore. Any ideas on how to solve this issue? Am I doing something I should not be doing? Thanks.

There is no way to indicate poster frames in PPro 2.
However, one workflow item you may be missing is to embed a project link before exporting from PPro 2. Then if you want to change anything in the video file after creating your chapter points and poster frames in Encore, select the asset, then choose Edit > Edit Original. The clip will be opened in PPro 2, and you can change it as desired, then re-export it.
Return to Encore after re-export has concluded and your asset will be updated.
Note you may still have to update your poster frames in Encore if the duration of the asset used changed.

  • Video captured in iMovie is split with frames missing

I have a client who sends me video to edit for him in FCP that he captures in iMovie.
Always around the 15 minutes mark there is a break in the footage. Looking in the 'iMovie Events' folder I see two files clip-2165-02-15 22;26;25.mov & clip.mov.
clip.mov is the first part and clip-2165-02-15 22;26;25.mov is the second part.
This would not if when I joined them in the FCP timeline they matched up, but there seems to be a few frames missing.
Does anyone one know what is going on?

FCP's 20 year old, nomenclature and file management are clumsy and capturing is unstable.
FCP isn't even 10 years old. Not even the app that Apple bought and made into FCP is 10 years old yet. And I beg to differ on the capturing being unstable. If it was so unstable, why would over 1 million people be using it? Why would over half of the production companies in Los Angeles be using it if it was so awful and unstable? No. The application is very stable, and very easy to use. If it isn't working right, then something is wrong... Bad tape, bad deck, bad cable, bad install of the app, machine issues, user error.
I've often captured footage in iMove that was causing too much grief in FCP Or when I actually wanted separate clips on TC breaks.
iMovie captures without timecode, nor reel numbers. That is a hugely important thing for professional editors. That is the basis for good file management, and since iMovie lacks that, it's worse at file management then FCP. A professional wouldn't work without TC and reel numbers. It also captures in a codec that mixes audio and video in ways that make the format uneditable in FCP without rendering.
And, BTW, FCP will make separate clips. It has a SCENE DETECTOR that will break up a big clip into subclips (or does it just add markers)...if you want that "easy button."
Attempting to capture this footage in FCP would probably just cause even more headaches.
    What footage?
And there are at least as many threads about capturing problems in FCP as there are "iMovie footage" threads. The two are directly correlated.
No...iMovie is consumer, FCP is professional. And capturing problems can be caused by one of a dozen reasons. I listed them above.
If Apple isn't going to fix FCP the least they can do is allow iMovie to share the codecs that are installed with FCP and encourage cross compatibility rather than hobbling it.
Allow FCP to use consumer codecs? Lacking timecode and reel numbers? Ugh...I hope not. And what is broken about FCP? Is EVERYONE having the SAME capture issue? You see a few dozen posts about how capturing footage doesn't work and you think EVERYONE has the issue? With over 1 million FCP copies out there, unless you saw nearly that many posts about the issue, it isn't something that is broken in the application. It is an isolated event happening to a few people.
Looking at posts on FCP is much like sitting in a hospital waiting room. You only see the problems that occur. If you see a dozen people coming in with broken arms, you now assume that EVERYONE has a broken arm? Or that with all these sick people wandering about, that the whole town is sick? No, only a small percentage is sick.

  • Should poster frame be rendering as the file icon?

I am self-taught in AE and must have missed something basic here.
I am simply trying to set which image (frame) will appear as the icon for a renedered comp.  I understand how to set the poster frame for a comp, and I get the desired result in the project window when the comp is selected. I "set poster time" while the timeline window is selected as well, but when my comp is renedered the icon is always the frame at 10 seconds on the timeline.
I've done quite a bit of research, but must be missing something obvious.
    Thanks!

I don't think these features ever worked right in any version of AE. It's definitely broken for Quicktime output and this may be the same for AE's own internal thumbnail rendering. Though, admittedly, I never much cared for that and couldn't tell you what's right and what's wrong. I'd have to check this specifically.

  • Greyed out Set Poster Frame

I am trying to set poster frames for my videos in my timelines. Unfortunately when I select menu and then Set Poster Frame it is greyed out.
I have tried going to the video in the timeline and makinga marker and then setting that as a Poster Frame but doesnt work?
    Thanks
    Brightface.

You should have a Marker at the beginning of the Timeline. Click it to activate it, and then you should get Set Poster Frame. Just activate that Marker, and set the CTI (Current Time Indicator) to the desired new location - I do this with first a Left-click, then a Rt-click.
Hope that helps, and good luck,

  • Poster Frame and Trim Mode not working properly with post-synced clips

    Hi Everyone-
Final Cut Pro seems to be doing something really odd and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced it and if so what is the fix:
We are shooting a movie on Red with sound coming in on multitrack wav files. We downconvert the R3D files to Prores and then manually sync the tracks in the timeline.
We link the pix and sound and drag them to the bin to make our dailies. They all play, in sync. When we try to set a poster frame the issues begin. If I load the clip into the browser park the playhead on a frame and choose poster frame, the actual frame in the bin is very noticably offset (often by a few seconds).
Also, when I use the trim mode, the frames jump to a different part of the shot during trim. It's like the shot is jumping ahead or back while I hit the frame advance or recede buttons. Once I let go of the button the image jumps to the correct number of frames. But, it's very distracting if I am trying to trim, for example, to just before an actor blinks. I can't trim 1 frame at a time. I have to keep hitting the button, watching the picture jump to a different part of the shot, release the trim button and watch the picture jump back to the now correctly trimmed frame...
As a test I took some of the Prores clips with scratch track sound and brought them into the bin directly from the finder, bypassing the syncing. Using those clips, the trim and poster frames work as expected. Obviously something is going on during syncing.
I assumed maybe because the audio and pix we different lengths the clip was getting "confused", and didn't know where to "start". So, in the timeline with the synced clips, I razor bladed a few shots, linked them, and dragged them to the bin so the audio and video were the exact same length... Same issue.
I have noticed the same behavior on 2 separate Macs so I don't think its a preference or corrupted install issue.
Anyone seen this and have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    David

Yes, David, I'm having the same problem under the same circumstances. we're using merged clips made from Prores QTs and multitrk BWF files. In the trim window, the display frame jumps ahead considerably in a frame-by-frame trim, but trims accurately in the timeline. My only work-around has been to use the left/right scrub arrows in the trim window when necessary, which displays the correct frame. Sorry not to have an answer, but I saw a post on another forum from 2007 that speculated it was an FCP 6 bug. Resetting prefs doesn't help.

  • Poster Frame QT Movie linked to standard QT Movie loads in Firefox not I.E.

Ok, this may be a rare question here. Here's what I've done following a small blurb of directions in iMovie6/iDVD the Missing Manual by David Pogue. (awesome book)
I've created a "poster frame movie" in QT. This is a one -frame movie I use as the picture on the page.
This poster frame movie, when clicked, is linked to a full version of the same movie that opens in the same place. The reason for this poster frame movie is to start the QT plug-in download as soon as someone reaches my page so there is no wait time when they click to watch the movie, it should be instantaneous.
I tested this last night on my Mac with Firefox, and after clicking the poster frame movie (i.e.) the picture; the linked movie loaded right away. This worked on PC with Firefox as well.
However, when this is page is loaded in Internet Explorer, on Mac or PC, the poster frame movie is there, but when clicked, the full movies do not load.
Can anyone think of why or what setting I.E. may have that doesn't allow my QT movies to load when other browsers allow it?

    Yup, that's your problem.
Before the <embed> you should add:
    <param name="href" value="http://blip.tv/file/get/Awarner20-AnniversarySecondTry745.mov">
    <param name="target" value="myself">
As predicted, your problem is that while the QuickTime plug-in has the HREF and TARGET parameters, they are missing from your OBJECT code, meaning that the QuickTime ActiveX Control will never see them. You need to include all parameters in both places (unless you want different behavior in IE).
Also, TECHNICALLY, you should also add a </embed> just before the </object>. The <embed> tag, like, for instance, the <p> tag is self-closing, but the most recent XML standard (HTML is a subset of XML) says, "Thou shalt close all of thy tags". So it won't make a bit of difference in function, but it is good practice. And yes, you should also close your <p> tags and use <br /> or <br></br>, too.
(although technically we're not supposed to use EMBED at all anymore, as it isn't in the HTML spec, but it works with all browsers except IE while OBJECT doesn't always...)

  • CS2:  "Set Poster Frame" grayed out?

I have the CS2 version of Encore. I want to set a poster frame in a timeline. I have the desired timeline open in the timeline viewer, and displayed in the timeline monitor window. Regardless of whether I have the monitor window highlighted/active or the timeline viewer window highlighted/active, when I go to the Timeline menu at the top of the screen the choice to "Set Poster Frame" is grayed out, so I can't choose it.
Why would it be grayed out? What do I need to do in order to be able to choose it?

Is the chapter marker for which you want to set the poster frame selected?

  • Flip Video - green poster frame?

I am trying to edit 78 short clips shot on a Flip HD cam. The sequence is set up with the Sony XDCAM-EX 720p 30P sequence preset, which is supposedly the Flip's native format. If I load 20 clips on the time line I am able to edit fine but if I try editing with all 78 clips on the timeline the poster frames turn green, and the clip will not preview, although the audio still plays. Nothing I do will get PP to then reread the clips so they can be edited normally.
I am wondering if my system is not robust enough to handle that much compressed data (mp4) on the time line? Or is it a problem with the mp4 format. I have tried converting to AVI but this seem to slightly degrade the quality and create huge files. A 50 mg clip turns into 3.2 gb when converting to AVI.
I would like to edit all 78 clips on one time line but not sure if that is going to work in the native format.
Wondering how to work around this issue. I have since quit using the  FLIP and have a cam more suitable for editing. But I need to get these  78 clips edited and on to a Blu Ray. If I edited 20 clips at a time and  exported what format should I export in,  for then re-editing in PP.
There are 2 Flip converters available but I'm not sure if these are really needed.
    Flip converters:
    http://www.iorgsoft.com/

Flip & PP info I have checked.

    http://blogs.adobe.com/VideoRoad/2009/12/using_a_flip_minohd_camera_wit.html

You say you are on Windows but i see converters for the Mac.
Get yourself the trialversion of NeoScene from Cineform, you will have 7 days to convert. After that you will only need the Cineform player installed.
Easy to edit in Premiere, but yes huge files.
Your graphics card does it have the latest driver installed?

  • Set Poster Frame not working

I can't set poster frames in bin icon view using command-P, nothing sticks...  anyone else experiencing this?  PPro CC 7.2.1 & OS X 10.9.1

I'm not clear on how Poster Frames are supposed to work here.  The image you see for the clip in icon mode is the frame the clip's playhead is on.  It's the first frame by default, but when you play through a clip in the bin, which you'd need to do to choose a Poster Frame, it stays on that frame anyway until you move the clips playhead.  So...you end up with the same result.
But even if a Poster Frame could be set, does that mean you can no longer play through the clip in the bin because it's always showing that Poster Frame?  I don't understand the purpose of that.  And if you can still play the clip in the bin, then what use a Poster Frame if it doesn't always show that?
    I'm missing something.

  • Poster Frame Issue

    Hello,
I love the "poster frame" feature in PrPro, wherein you can change the image that appears on the thumbnail for the project clip by scrolling through your clip within the project panel and then clicking the little poster frame icon in the small viewer on the appropriate frame that you want to represent the clip.
It is rare indeed that the first frame truly represents how you want to remember that clip for later sorting and editing.
As far as I know, I have performed this process correctly on a few items within a preexisting bin.  In the project bin my new, representative poster frame now appears for that clip.
Yet in the timeline the first frame of the clip appears on the thumbnail, rather than my poster frame.
    Hmmmm.
    Any thoughts?
It's a wonderful feature that can really speed up editing among clips that start with a similar first frame.  I'd love to take advantage of it.
    Thanks,

Yet in the timeline the first frame of the clip appears on the thumbnail, rather than my poster frame.
    Matt,
Yes, that's the expected behavior of this; the poster frame is only for a heads-up reference in the bin or project panel. In the sequence, you'd *usually* want to see what the actual incoming frame is; I think it would be unintentionally deceiving if that thumbnail in the clip instance didn't match the first frame of the clip instance.
You might be able to work around this a little bit; you can change what is drawn on the clip instance with the following button:
The "Show Frames" option might help you a bit.

  • Where's the timeline key frames button in Elements 10?

I've just installed Premiere Elements 10 on my new iMac.  I've noticed that the add/remove key frames button on the left of the video tracks in the timeline appears only in track one and yet, in illustrations on the help pages (and in earlier versions of PE) the button appears alongside each track.
So how do I make that button appear?
    Many thanks.

My thanks for your interest.  I have thanked Robert for his contribution.
Best wishes for the forum.  It's a great asset.

I would say that it's a programming Bug in the GUI display, as the Keyframe operations buttons SHOULD appear for all Tracks. However, Robert had the workaround. Bug Report. Note: PrE shows up in the Photoshop Family. Good luck, and thank you Robert, Hunt
