Timeline scrolling  when playing

Does anyone know how to make the play head scroll while playing so while palying a long time line clip it does not go off the screen never to be seen again unless I press stop?
thanks in advance and its driving me mad.
Daz

This feature is unfortunately not available in Final Cut. I generally use the horizontal scroll wheel to do this manually.
If you desperately want it, try requesting it as a feature and maybe they'll add it if there is enough demand:

My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1.  I have imported .mov clips created on a older mac os x (lion) and when I wanted to import them into fce, a quicktime conversion window opened up and converted them (I haven't experienced this in the past). I then imported the converted quicktime clips into my fce project.  After doing this I took selected clips and put those edited clips on the fce timeline.  When playing the video back in the fce timeline,I noticed
    1) the video wasn't playing back smoothly like the original content
    2) when looking at the timecode reading of the timeline, the timecode was sputtering as well as the video and audio.  I exported to quicktime just to see if that was consistent, it was.
When I play the converted quicktime content independently of fce,  it plays normally (no sputtering of timecode, video and audio.  Need help to resolve the sputtering playback of converted video content in the fce timeline.  I've never experienced this before.  Any suggestions?

When you say you converted the clips before importing them into FCE, did you convert to AIC or DV and do the converted clips match your FCE Sequence settings exactly?  If not, go back and convert the original files again, using the intended Sequence settings as a guide.

  • Audio Clicking and broken up when playing back from timeline

Can anyone please give me some advice about a possible solution to a continuing audio problem I am having when using the Tascam Fireone with Final Cut Pro 5.1.4. (Fireone working well with Logic 7 on the same machine)
    The Symptoms are as follow:
When playing back edited clips or music from the timeline there are constant ugly pops and clicks.
Any audio or video and audio even with differing sample rates when played in the source monitor are unaffected and play perfectly.
I have tried everything I know and am now at a total loss as to what to try next.
Tascam's so called support ignore any communication from me about it, as do most people on this forum.
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Thank you

I think it is a driver issue between Tascam and Apple Firewire connections
It's all very frustrating as Tascam just do not respond to support questions well.
Thanks for your comments, it's back to the drawing board with the Fireone and Final Cut Pro, a great shame because it's cheap and very good with Logic.

  • Audio Glitches on Timeline, but not when played in QT?

I had a client send me his project on a harddrive.
They exported a .mov file from FCP and it has no audio glitches when played with Quicktime.
But if i drag that file to a timeline and watch it through my DSR-25 to a NTSC monitor, it has audio glitches in certain spots.
Always at that spot though and if i watch the file in Quicktime, it plays fine.
All audio was exported originally out of FCP using Quicktime Movie with 48khz, 16 bit stereo so nothing needed to be rendered.
Seems like it has something to do with it going over via firewire through my DSR-25.
Has anyone else had this problem.
I can't make a Master DVCam tape for this master because of these audio glitches.
    Thanks for any help,
    Brian

I read a post about a user having this same sort of issue.
He said when he turns off his video layer, in my case just V1, the audio played fine.
    Same with mine.
So it seems to be an issue with the video track playing with the audio track.
If i export it and bring it back in, will it just create that same audio glitch?
Guess i will have to try.
Anyone have this issue or similiar?
    Thanks,
    Brian

  • Premiere hesitates to play anything on my timeline, and when it finally does it's all choppy. How do I fix this?

I am used to using older versions of premiere, and I've never run into this problem. I worked on my video just yesterday and everything was working fine, and today it waits for like a minute or two before playing anything on my timeline. When it does play, the video is choppy, and the controls are unresponsive. I have checked to see if it's a renderer problem but i can only use the mercury playback software, and it has no problem playing any of the media when i view it in the source monitor. I've tried closing the program and opening it again, and I've tried turning my computer off and then back on as well and it still gives me the same problems. I have even go so far as to try one of the back up saved files and it still has the same issue. Can anyone help?

Hy ... Check your Videocodec for the Preview and Programmonitor... Sometimes it gets hard with h264 so i'm using ProRes 422 ... u find it in the settings of your sequenze, if not u should check how much cache you let premiere use!

Thank you for the help. Below is my Source footage and sequence settings.
The other footage I have on the timeline is an mp3 file made in Garage Band and some footage I sent to Motion to edit. I do have some offline media on there since I switched computers but FCP had been working fine for a few months with it on there. I have not tried trashing my FCP Preferences. If I did would I have to back up my project?

  • How get multiclips to stay in viewer when playing/editing in timeline?

I just started editing in multiclip. I can get my 3 multiclip clips to show in the Viewer on a 4-up display, but when I play the Timeline, the Viewer jumps to full frame active view. I've set the RT at Multiclip Playback, set the Open option on the Playhead Sync menu, and set Multi-clip 4-up Display. What am I doing wrong or missing?
How can I get the multiclips 4-up display to stay in the Viewer when I play the Timeline?
    Thanks,
    Duncan
    Mac Pro Mac OS X (10.4.10) 2 750 HDs, 1 500 HD, 1 1T HD

There are 2 things to check.
    1. Has your timeline been rendered? I ask this because I was given a 3 camera multiclip project from another editor here, and with all of my settings checked, I still couldn't get the multiclips to show on my external when playing back. Once playback was stopped or the playhead scrubbed, then the 4-up display would return. Just for kicks, I cleared his render cache and bingo, 4-up returned on playback.
    2. In the View menu, is "Show Multiclip Angles" checked? (It's at the very bottom of the menu).

  • Spinning ball when playing from timeline

I keep getting the spinning beachball when I try to play clips from the timeline. They play fine in the viewer. My clips were captured to LaCie HD (which still has 19 GB free) and nothing has changed from other projects that have worked in the past.
Any suggestions? If I can't resolve this, can I use FCE 1.0.1? Will it open my HD project?

I have checked the FAQ at this location:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42978
but do not see how to trash my preferences. Is there another place where I can find this info?
Any thoughts on why this happens? I opened a new project in FCE 1.0 and was able to import the same clips and play them from the timeline with no problems. Sounds like a FCE HD problem to me.

  • Pictures look fuzzy when playing in timeline and even after export.

This is a major headache for me.
I have brought high resolution photos into FCP 7 and they look great when scaled down when I pause or scrub the video in my timeline. When I play my video in the timeline or after an export, it looks fuzzy or pixelated.
I was given the suggestion to mess with interlacing, change the photos to 72dpi before importing to FCP, and other suggestions. Changing the dpi didn't seem to make any difference. Is this a render issue? I've been checking the render setting but haven't had any luck.
    Any suggestions?
I'm not great at determining what my settings should be at for FCP on my MacBook Pro. I have been messing with the settings so much in the past few days trying to fix my fuzzy/pixelated photos problem, and I now am having a difficult time trying to remember what everything was originally set at.
    Help!

I am using QT 7.6.4 as I'm still hanging back on Leopard - not Snow Leopard.
If you look in your "Utilities" folder you might a copy of QT (non-X) in that folder. If not there already, it's an "additional install" on the OS DVD I think.
from here: (Oddly, the corresponding Apple Support page was down. This is Apple's info really...somone else has copied/pasted)
    1. Insert your Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Install DVD.
    2. Open the "Optional Installs folder" and double-click "Optional Installs.mpkg".
    3. Select the QuickTime 7 option and click Continue.
    4. QuickTime Player 7 will be installed in your Utilities folder.
If you have QuickTime 7 installed, Snow Leopard handles the division of labor for you, using QuickTime X when it can and QuickTime 7 when it needs to.
If you don't already have QuickTime 7 installed, then the first time you try to do something that requires it -- such as play a video that needs a non-standard codec, for example -- Snow Leopard will ask if you want to install it.

  • Premiere Elements 11 + Windows 8 pro = slow timeline scrolling!

    Hi!
I experience slow redraw of the timeline clips when I scroll,
which makes it very difficult, slow and unpleasant to edit!
This in nothing new to you all, as I have read in many posts about this problem!
And everyone is asking (below these posts) questions like:
"do you have the latest QuickTime codecs?" or "do you have the latest graphics drivers?"
or that our pc are slow or that we work with strange video formats or to change to no thumbnail in the clips or that its
    the antivirus fault or whatever.
    It is not all these!
    As I have read:
-It can happen in many versions of Premiere Elements(maybe in all of them, I don't know)
-It can happen in both ATI/AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards
-It can happen in all hardware configurations CPU/motherboards
-It can happen in all windows versions and both 32/64 bit
So I am guessing it is not our fault.
Can Adobe finally fix this problem with an update? It's been so many versions until now!
    please... Is it so difficult?
Can't the programmers see what are we talking about? Can't they fix the programme?
Before I bought Premiere Elements 11 I had the 9 version in windows 7(64bit)
The same problem, slow/laggy timeline redraw when moving back and forth.
The solution I found was to disable the Aero feature in windows 7!
And oh my god... the timeline then was so fast and smooth, I was so happy to edit!
So I compromised with that(disabling aero).
Recently I have upgrad the same PC to windows 8 pro(64 bit) AND bought Premiere Elements 11. (hoping for speed in every possible way!)
The slow timeline scrolling still happens in both PRE9 and in PRE11.
And guess what? in windows 8 pro you can't disable the "aero feature"!!!
You can only change some visual settings, and even if I disable all of them, nothing changes!
So are we really stuck with the laggy timeline scrolling in windows 8???
Premiere Elements 11 is so much faster in all other things (exept the timeline scrolling)
In the preview window for example. It can play really smooth, in real time WITHOUT render preview
some pretty difficult compositions I make! multiple layers, with greenbox and many other filter effects!
Which in Premiere Elements 9 (in the same PC) the preview play was very laggy!
(don't forget that with aero disabled in PE9(win7), same PC, same complicated compositions, timeline scrolling superfast!)
I think they made some pretty good graphic card use in the preview play in PRE11!
I present and edit a youtube show with Premiere Elements with demanding compositing and everyone thinks I use Premiere Pro CS
version or After Effects CS. But I don't, I want to be legal and I can't aford the prices of these applications
so I buy and use the Elements series which are very powerful as well, if you know what to do and HOW to do it!
See for youselves my show I posted today(in Greek, I am from Greece), which I edited in PRE11.(pefrect greenbox, perfect!)
http://youtu.be/HdKAKI6P8tU?hd=1&t=1m28s (open in a new window)
or move time to 1:28 from the below youtube video window.
But unfortunattely the timeline scrolling made my editing unpleasant and slow!
My question is: Will I, (now that I have upgraded to windows 8 pro 64bit) have to edit ALL my next shows/videos
with the slow/laggy timeline scrolling??? please tell me something to hope for...

I have an ATI/AMD FirePro  v4800 1GB GDDR5 with the latest drivers for this card (8.982.8.3)
Is my video card not compatible?
this slow redraw of the timeline happened way before
and everytime a new driver version came up I had installed it but that didn't change anything.
Only with aero disabled I would enjoy a fast timeline scrolling in windows 7. (now, not possible in windows 8 pro)
Bill how can you explain this? Same video card and everytime with the SAME NEW drivers, aero on=slow timeline, aero off=fast timeline!
Is there some kind of a fix that we can always wait from our graphics card companies to include to new drivers??? (for how long???)
or maybe is it all up to Adobe and its own programme?
Are we all supposed to have old video display drivers?
Can someone make some kind of a poll for people who have this problem to vote to see where this problem apears, in which configurations, in which graphics cards? (assuming they have latest drivers)
so we all finally know what/where is the problem.
I love the premiere elements series and thats why I want this to be solved.

  • Timeline scrolling, can it be slowed?

    Hope the following makes sense.
Is there a way to stop or slow down the scrolling when scrubbing the timeline and touching the edge of the screen? I work on theatre shows and my timelines are often 1 hour long, so when scrubbing and accidently hit the edge of the screen, I end up a few minutes down the timeline in less than a second! I know that the speed depends on how hard you hit the edge of the screen, but it's too easy to scroll at uncontrollable speed and of course it slows my editing down while I try and find where I was again. If the scroll speed was more manageable it would be much more useful than scrolling at warp speed to a place in the timeline that is not wanted.
If I wanted to get down the timeline at speed of course I would just use the drag the cursor bar under the timeline. Anyway, if there is a way to stop the fast scrolling just by scrubbing to the edge of the screen, or at least slow it down please let me know.
