Timeline slowing down playback / deleting tracks remedies problem

Here's a nasty bug I've been running into lately.
I've noticed (on the latest version of Premiere CC 2014) that sometimes a timeline/sequence in a project will start to slow down during playback. It slows down not only the advance of the playhead (in terms of how often it's refreshing) but more annoyingly, it slows down video playback in the program monitor. It happens even when footage has been rendered and should exhibit minimal stress on the system.
To illustrate that it's just the timeline, not the video itself, the problem can be "fixed" in three ways:
1. Zoom in on the timeline until playback smooths out again. If a small enough piece of the timeline is visible, it seems to smooth out playback again.
2. Maximize the program monitor window (so that it's the only visible window in Premiere) and then again, immediately playback snaps to full speed again. I can full-screen the video playback, etc, without issue. And un-rendered portions of footage with effects applied play better as well.
3. Reduce the number of video/audio tracks. This is what I think is actually slowing down Premiere. But the problem is, I don't have that many tracks to begin with. On the project I'm working on right now, I have 4 video tracks and 5 audio tracks. Simply deleting the bottom 3 audio tracks (which are sparse and only have a few incidental effects) fixes my video/GUI playback problem immediately.
So my question is... why is Premiere slowing to a crawl just because I added a few audio tracks to a project? Apparently my machine is fast enough to edit 4K material off the GH4 with effects applied and not drop a frame. But add a few tracks of stereo audio? Premiere slows to a crawl.
It wasn't like this in previous versions, guys. Please advise.

Try accessing your audio from a different drive location.

  • Crop + feather slows down playback!

Hi. I have a clip on video track 1 and another clip on video track 2. When I put a simple feather on a crop of the clip on V2, it slows down playback (i.e., I have an orange render line on my sequence). The funny thing is that when if I reverse their order, the playback is fine. Meaning, if the bottom clip has crop+feather and the top one doesn't, no problem. When the top has crop+feather: problem. What gives? Any advice?
    Many thanks.

Thanks. You're right about the bottom track, so forget about that part of my original post. But the rest is still problematic.
I've tried the clip with other filters also: chroma key, color correct, etc. I even tried putting on a garbage matte with feathered edges and that works fine. I mean, I can feel it slowing down a little with all those 3 filters, but I can still play it (with unlimited RT) without having to render. However if I have that same clip with NO filters but just a simple crop+feather, it's virtually unplayable: it will still play back without rendering, but it skips tons of frames, to the point where sound doesn't sync and it's just useless.
I don't understand why. Any ideas?

  • Can anyone tell me how to slow down a commerical track in Garage Band 10.00.  I was able to do it quite easily before I updated, but now find I am unable to do it.  Would be grateful for any help

Can anyone tell me how to slow down a commercial track in Garage band 10.00  I was able to do this in the earlier version of Garage Band quite easily and it is a good tool for being able to teach new dances, but I find I am unable to do it in the new version, which has just been updated.  I would be grateful for any help.

    Just found it.
Select your track with song imported from iTunes, open the Track Editor window, and in the head of the track editor  and press the "Flex" marker. Make sure "Enable Flex" is set,
Then change the tempo of your project.

  • To slow down playback

I'm trying to learn a foreign language (Italian) and I've put some instruction CDs on iTunes. The illustrative lessons are sometimes spoken too quickly for me to pick up some of the words, and I was wondering if there is a way to slowdown the playback: it wouldn't matter if the pitch dropped. I suppose I would need some extra software: but what would that be. It would seem extravagant to buy an expensive music synthesizing package for such a simple effect.

Drop the clip into the timeline and Modify>Retime>Slow 50%.
If you need to speed up/slow down to aid transcription, drag the
speed indicator and drag to prefered speed.
Add the notes to the INFO tab in the inspector
When done, delete clip from timeline and add the next....

  • Does Exporting 60fps on a 30fps timeline slows down export

I am editing a wedding videos with 2-3 cameras. The main videographer likes to shoot on 60fps while the other 2 shoots on 30fps.
I bring it to a 30fps timeline and set the 60fps clips to "scale to frame size"
after the edit, I export it out to 1080, 30 fps. And it takes about 9 hours to export a 40 mins video.
So I'm just curious if my 60fps clip on a 30fps timeline with 2 other 30fps angles is actually slowing down my export? What's the proper way that I should do it?
I just upgraded to a sad from a hdd and I thought it would actually make things faster but it seems like there is no changes.
I also have a 8gb ram. Does the problem lies on my timeline or my mac?

I have edited several 3 camera AVCHD weddings on this about significantly upgraded 1 year old PC notebook and while i really do the exporting on a desktop, but if you tell me your real export settings I will try to tell you what I see, now I do not have the complication of any 60p camera footage.
I cannot understand what you are doing with the "scale to frame size" process if both cameras are all the cameras are the same resolution???

  • Slowing down an audio track like a record

Is there any way to edit a music track to graqdually slow it down like a vinyl record slowing down to a stop?   Finding a sound effect like that is not as easy as I thought it would be.
    Thanks!

Eh.   Segmenting wouldn't be a very smooth sound.   I did think of that.  However, since this clip only needs to be something like 3 seconds, it's kinda impractical.
I was hping not have to get into a new program just for a brief effect, but I may have to.
I went over the freesound.org, where I thought, "Surely, there's an effect here", but srprisingly, there is not.  But they did have a couple of solutions on their forum, so I'll probalbyl give them a try.

  • Why does my ipod slow down playback?

I have a 3rd Gen iPod Classic which has worked flawlessly until just recently. It has started to play back my mp3 files at a slightly slower tempo but enough that it is really disconcerting. Does this mean that the unit is dying? Like maybe the hard drive is on its way out? I know newer versions have a speed control. Not mine. Has anyone out there had a similar experience? Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Good that "big gamer nerds" are starting to use the Mac.  Not long ago, there were hardly any good games around.  Going backwards, yes, it's going to make the MBP run hotter.  It's using the max amount of everything running.
To really help you, we would need the exact model of MBP.  For example, if you have 15 or 17", you need to make sure you're running with the discrete video card (nvidia or AMD) instead of the integrated Intel version (which is good enough for TV viewing and web browsing).  Also, you need to make sure you maximize memory.  When I play a game (I only play Starcraft), I shut down all other programs, especially anything that runs in the background (like a twitter feed, though that really doesn't use too many resources).  You can use Activity Monitor (it's in your Utility folder) to see what's sucking resources on your computer.
Remember, the game companies want to sell as many games as possible.  So they give computer spects that will just barely run the game if you tweak every setting.  You want to be way over the minimum settings in processor speed, memory, disk space etc.
Minecraft has known framerate issues on the Mac port of the game.  It has nothing to do with you, your Mac, or anything, but the quality of code from the developer.

  • Slowing down playback

I play guitar and at the moment I am trying to learn Classical Soul by Oscar Lopez.
A nice handy ability would be to slow the song down, either with iTunes or Garageband maybe, so I could follow it a little easier while I learn this song.
However I don't quite know how...
    Any Ideas?

    Hi Calum,
In audio terms, this is called Time Stretching (even when you make it smaller and therefore faster).
You can't do it in iTunes or Garageband (you need Logic Express or Logic Pro if you want an Apple program). However, there's a piece of freeware called Audacity which does the trick. SImply load in your file and stretch away. You need to realise that the further you go from 100%, the worse the quality gets but, unless the lick is blisteringly fast, 25% should be enough to help you pick out the notes.

    Good luck!

  • Slowing down a voice track

I've been importing *.Aiff voice files from an Olympus digital voice recorder into iTunes and then to GarageBand for editing. However sometimes when I import it, upon playback the voice is going so fast as to be unintelligible. I tried changing the tempo bar but to no effect. Is there another way to adjust it back to normal speed and pitch?
    Thanks much,
    Neil Gader

I've done all this. I've converted the file to 44.1 Aiff, even converted to MP3. Each time I drag and drop the converted file into Garage band it's speeding along at double time. Is there something in Garageband that I need to optimize prior to importation?
    thanks, Neil

  • My iMac 8.1 was slowing down and had permissions problems. I backed everything up, and then re-installed. Now all I get is a black screen. Power+D gives me a hardware error message: HDD-1336. Help!

My iMac 8.1 (10.6.8 ) was slowing down and had recurrent permissions problems, mostly with Java. I backed everything up, and then re-installed from time machine. Now all I get is a black screen which says I need to reboot. Power+D gives me a hardware error message: 4 MOT/1/40000003: HDD-1336 or HDD-1327. When I reboot from the OSX CD and start disc utilities everything checks out OK. When I reload 10.5.2 from the OSX CD everything seems to work OK and no more permissions problems. But then I loose all my email and safari stuff. Anyone have any ideas short of going back to my old PC?

    Cheers. Don
No unfortunatley it's too old, you are referring to Target Display Mode which became avialble in 2009, your 2008 needs to have the HD replaced. I'd still do that if everything else is OK or you can simply buy a new MM and display or even a new iMac  or an Apple refurbished iMac to save money.

  • Problems with Refresh / Deleting Tracks and Album ...

There are times when refreshing the Music Player library either won't complete (eg: after you've dropped the phone popping out the battery in the middle of a refresh .. or is that just me?) or deleted tracks and album art won't disappear from the Music library after a refresh.
These problems are often down to corruption of the library and  the only thing to do is to delete the library files and start over.  Even a hard reset of the phone won't fix this as the files are stored on the card / mass memory.
    To delete the library files:
    - Ensure you can see hidden files in Windows Explorer:
Windows Explorer .. Tools .. Folder Options .. View
Select "Show hidden files and folders"
    - Connect the phone to your PC using the USB cable in "Data transfer" mode
    - Find and rename (or delete if you're really brave) files with names like:
    E:\private\101FFC31\mpxv1.mpd
    E:\private\101FFC31\pcv5.mpd
    E:\private\101ffca9\harvesterdb.dat
(assuming the phone's mass memory / card has been connected as E
Note that the folder names may be different and the files may have prefixes - eg: mpxv1.mpd could be called abcmpxv1.mpd.  Basically, you need to search under the Private folder for any files that look similar.
If you rename files - eg: by adding a ".o" to the end of the name - instead of deleting them, you can always just change the name back if you find you need those files back.
    - Refresh the Music Player library
This will take longer than normal as it's a complete refresh, but it should now work.

    Hi,
What version of Workspace Manager are you using ? I tested this with 9.2.0.4 and everything worked as expected. I was unable to update the row from the WK2 workspace after refreshing it.
Please note that after removing WK1, all locks that had been held by the WK1 workspace are dropped. So, when you update the row for a second time, you are actually locking the row that had been merged(which is contained in the TOP workspace) and not the row from the LIVE workspace. So any workspace that references the row from the LIVE workspace, and not the one from the TOP workspace, would be able to update the row.
This is the case that exists before refreshing WK2. However, after refreshing WK2, it will then use the row from the TOP workspace. Since this row is locked it would be unable update the row.

  • How can I slow down the playback speed of selected parts of a captivate video?

    Hi everybody,
I'm pretty new to Captivate and although it offers some great tools, there is something that I just can't get to work:
I'm creating a video tutorial about how to use a website i'm working with so I've tried using "Automatic" ("Demo" mode chosen) recording option which is recommended for this type of video. However, the video recorded has a different playback speed than the amount of time I recorded. This means that some of the slides have a quicker playback speed than the way I recorded, thereby not leaving enough time to show the given feature.
The recording mode with the most "true" playback was "Full motion". However, I would still like to be able to slow down selected parts of the video, but can only find guides on how to slow down the entire presentation.
Can you please advise me on how to slow down only selected parts of the project? If this is not possible in Captivate, please advise me on which video editing software (where you can slow down the playback speed on selected parts of the video) is compatible with Captivate 5?
    Thanks!

Thank you. Andrew Kramer's Video Copilot video, which I somehow managed to miss, was very helpful.
I had a 79 second clip which I precomposed and enabled time remapping. But I have 12 places where I need to slow down the layer. After a while, I was runing out of room to add more keyframes using the method promoted in many videos and instruction sites (grab the last two keyframes, including the end frame, and drag).
In reality, you can add keyframes wherever you like and you can adjust them however works best within the existing timeline without messing with the duration, etc.
    Much appreciated.

I just figured out the print quality issue for my wife with her new iMac and new printer.
She replaced both at once and she couldn't understand why her Artisan 730 was lower quality then her Epson R280 when they had the same specs.
Turns out the newer printer had the option to connect via wifi which we used during setup.
The driver options are completely different depending on how you connect.
Once I connected via USB the correct options were available and the print quality was better.
Looking at the R2400 it dies not have wifi, but while researching the problem for my wife someone esle was having an issue updating to the latest printer driver.
If you go into the print utility from the Printer and Scanner system preference and under the general tab you should have driver 5.5.
One user had to delete the old printer driver before Software Update loaded the newer printer driver.

On my MacBook Pro (w Snow Leopard) I always had to reconnect my wifi at home when it woke up. I upgraded my router from an old Netgear to a newer N D-Link and stopped having to do that.
I would be surprised you would have that problem with an Airport Extreme, you might check to see if there is a firmware update for it.

  • Hi-pitched noise on slowed down audio track

I'd like to increase the levels on an audio track that I've slowed down to 50% but I am prohibited from doing so because of a resultant hi-pitched background noise that seems to occur due to the speed change. I tried using a couple of the FCP audio filters (the ones for 'hum remover' and 'high pass filter') - does anyone have any suggestions for this problem? Using FCP 5.0.4.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Jim,
Thanks for pointing out that filters could be applied prior to the speed change. I did just try out your possible solution, using both of the filters that I previously mentioned, but the problem remains.
Again - thanks for offering a solution though.
