Timemachine and mounted .dmg images?

Hi,
I wonder if I can backup with timemachine the contentes of a mounted dmg image?
My idea is to have a truecrypt volume and backup its contents. Using filevault with timemachine is not as
easy and simple as I was thinking.
So, if I can modify timemachine to backup any mounted image in /Volumes/, that would solve my problems.
Many thanks
Oliver

Hi guys, I have kind of similiar problem, only in my configuration there is no TC volume, whole partition was encrypted using TrueCrypt. Does anyone know the way to back up data stored on this drive with TM? BTW I understand the security issues and it's kind of cool that TM recognize encrypted volume and does not copy it's contents when its in the clear but ... shouldn't it also recognize whether my TimeCapsule is encrypted? In my case it is so it should work just fine.
Off topic - I only use TrueCrypt because once I enter password to encrypted HFS+ non system partition in Mac OS X Lion it's always avalaible to everyone, even if I unmount it, it's still unlocked, no password required to mount it again. Only way I found to lock the drive again was to shut down the system. Is there any other solution?
Thanks,
Peter

  • Cant restore my macbook with Disk utility and my .dmg image

My macbook would not boot anymore. Stuck on gray screen with apple logo, spinning wheel and a loading bar for a while after shutting off.
I was able to get to Disk Utility in the recovery mode and, after a while, was able to make an image of my filesin an attempt to back them up.
The .dmg was put on an external and i checked it on my imac, i could open the .dmg file and browse all my files from my macbook, so those are safe!
After that i tried to wipe the SSD of my macbook and put the image back but that didn't work, also some resource is busy errors.
After trying this a few times without succes i figured i'd try to do a clean install. This worked.
My macbook air is working again but if Iuse Disk Utility in the recovery now and try and restore my image (.dmg file) it gives me Restore Failure; An error (-16) occured (resource busy) as well. I also tried to copy the dmg onto my macbook and run disc utility when booted into OSX. I open up the back up .dmg with Disk utility, then i go to my macbooks partition (Macontiosh HD) and use that as a destination and drag the mounted image as the source as shown on the image below. Am I doing something wrong here?
Doing this i get an error as well: (-119,930,878) Resource busy as you can see.
What can i do to get my image back on my macbook? Any 3rd party software?
I considered just transferring the files after opening the .dmg file but this works only for documents and not for programs and settings of the default apps.
I've looked all over the Internet and it seems more people have had this error but then with making the image, they also suggest unmounting the destination disk before trying to restore but my destination is Macintosh HD, i cant really unmount that can i?
    Thanks in advance!

To make a clone, in the future you need to use a program like superduper or carbon copy cloner.
Either program makes an identical clone while preserving certain system files and marking/indicating to OS X that the clone is bootable.
Using Disk Utility to make a DMG was a good idea, but this will not yield a bootable image.
If Disk Utility could do a 1:1 copy of everything, then people would be using it to rip/duplicate DVDs.
But Disk Utility does not (it leaves out certain invisible/system files), hence it cannot duplicate/clone a hard drive or DVD.

    Here's what MacFixit says :
Disk images not mounting [Updated] Several users report an inability mount disk images after applying the Mac OS X 10.4.9 update.
If you are having a problem where disk images won't mount, try booting in Safe Mode (by holding down the Shift key while starting up), then re-attempting mounting of the disk image.
This solution is particularly useful for the following scenario: You want to try re-application of the Mac OS X combo updater (a common workaround for issues that occur after an incremental Mac OS X update), but are unable to mount the combo updater disk image.
Prior to booting in safe mode, however, you can delete the following files:
    * /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    * /System/Library/com.apple.kernelcaches
and re-attempting the mount. These, and other cache files, are automatically deleted when you boot in safe mode, but you can potentially save some time by trying deletion of these files (then logging out and back in) first.
Another option is to use an alternative tool that can mount disk images, like Mount.app, FlashMount, or Toast Titanium.
MacFixIt reader Joy Denton is one user who had success with our posted workaround:
"Just wanted to let you know that I had the issue of Disk Images not mounting. This occurred after installing Mac OS X 10.4.9 from Software Update. Fortunately, I read your post regarding a possible fix by using the Combo Update and used Toast to mount the disk image. Ran the Combo Update and ran AppleJack once again. I am now able to mount disk images. This was an annoying problem to be sure."
But imho the best advice that can be given about software updates is to always have a clone of your system on another partition or external HD so you can boot on it if anything goes wrong. From an external system you can repair your internal disk, install the Combo update if the incremental one failed, etc.

  • Problems mounting dmg images "no mountable file systems"

I have noticed with many DMG images I cannot open them. I constantly get an error "no mountable file systems".I sent the same DMG image to my friend on his Mac and he can open it, so it is on my side. I also have noticed my pen drive is not showing up on the desktop, but shows in disk utility. I have noticed these problems since I cloned and replaced my HD. I have also added a 50 GB partition to Boot Camp, if this should matter. Any idea??

    repaired permissions and rebooted.
    all ok now

  • Thermometer and mounted disk image???

I've set Time Machine to back up to a disk across my network.
Everytime it runs, I'm seeing the disk image mounted on my desktop and a thermometer showing me the progress. Both disappear when it's done.
This only started happening recently. I don't know why, and it's kind of annoying.
Is that how it's supposed to work? Again, it only started doing it recently.

When the image is mounted, click here and follow the instructions after modifying them to make the drive invisible.

  • Missing dmg image after convert in utility

    Situtation is like that
i have a external harddisk, and one day i back up the harddisk by using the Utility, and a dmg image generated.
i try to retreive the file, by disk utility, i cannot verify nor repair it and keep popping no mountable system found.
and downloaded disk warrior, and i saw in some forum saying that i have to conver the dmg file in read and write before using the disk warrior to retrieve.
    AND....
when i just click the convert to read/write, the back up file saved in the desktop disappeared
Can some one teach me how to get it back ???
years of memories are there .........

Try using Disk Warrior to repair the dmg.

  • Mounting a .dmg image (bootable DVD)... please help

what do these instructions mean exactly??:
""Mount the dmg image and drag out the boot DVD and serial text. then burn yourself a disk. once you drag out the 2 items inside the initial joined dmg never mount that bootable DVD""
I'm trying to make a bootable DVD. how is this done?? i have the .dmg file...now what? thanks

Double click on the dmg file. A Finder window will open presenting you (in this case at least) two files. Drag the DVD file from the window to your Desktop. I assume from your description that it's an iso file or something like that. Now open your favorite burning app (or Disc Utility) and burn the image file you stored on your Desktop to a DVD.
Hope that helps you getting started.

  • Log and Transfer .dmg is on hard drive but wont mount

    Hi All,
I have search the forums for a resolution to this but I couldn't find one. I am a home user for video so I will try to explain what happened as best I can.
I have a Canon Vixia HF20 and I created a disk image from disk utility and placed the image on a separate hard drive that I store all of the images on. I have done this numerous time with this camera in the past.
today I created an image as normal and opened up Final Cut Pro (7.0.3), opened up the log and transfer window, opened up the custom path window and double clicked on the image I created today. the first time I did this, the image opened and I was able to view the video in the log and transfer window. I just viewed the video, did not transfer or add anything to a queue. I then closed FCP.
This evening I tried the exact same thing, but the disk image will not load into FCP. I can see the .dmg on my hard drive, but when I try to open in in FCP to view the video, it will not load now.
Any suggestions? I have repaired permissions on my main hard drive thinking that might help. No go.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
    Kyle P

Thanks for your help goldfish. I have tried all of that to no avail. I think I found out that when I created the .dmg I somehow used the wrong path. Now when I open up the new .dmg it mounts and image of the entire hard drive with all of the slips except for the new one.
I have done some test video and imported them correctly, but I am now sure I used the wrong path. However, this still does not explain why I was able to see the video the first time I created it.
Anyway, I have no learned (NEVER) delete the video from the camera until you are sure you have the correct disk image. Thankfully the video was not important.
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Time Machine and mounted sparse bundle disk image - file by file backup?

I think I had this system working in Leopard, but upon upgrade to Snow Leopard it seems to have broken. Does anyone have any idea how I can get Time Machine to back up the contents of a mounted sparse bundle disk image in real time - file by file within the disk image? For example, I have a 2GB sparse bundle disk image that i keep all of my bank statements/files/records in. It auto-mounts on boot and stays mounted. I use the disk image to keep it password-protected, so if I unmount it it is fairly safe. In Leopard, I would exclude the .sparseimage file from backup, but it would still backup the mounted image itself on a file-by-file basis, so I could enter Time Machine and explore the image folder by folder, file by file (say I deleted an old bank statement by mistake, I could go into time machine and recover as if it were a normal file/folder).
In Snow Leopard, after a clean install, and creating a new sparse bundle disk image and excluding the .sparsebundle file, I can't seem to get this to work even though the image is mounted. Is there any way to trick Time Machine into backing up the mounted image as it would any other folder? I know I can back up the .sparsebundle file incrementally but in order to recover a lost document I'd have to remount the old bundle and that seems rather roundabout.
    Thanks,

I think you're trying to bypass the finder to mount the disk. Try this (I'll bold the key steps):
    - *Turn off Time Machine* in the System Preferences.
    - Option A: If you directly use a hard disk (not wireless) that has the sparsebundle you want to open, *connect the disk* but don't double click on the sparsebundle.
    - Option B: If you are using wireless, this means use shift-command-k (or shift-apple-k), and if it says "Connect As..." in the upper right instead of disconnect, then use that button to *connect to that wireless drive*.
    - Confirm the sparsebundle shows in that folder before proceeding...
    - *Open Terminal* (Applications>Utilities>Terminal.app)
    - Type: *hdiutil attach -noverify* (<-- notice a *space " "* must be included after typing this here but *DON'T hit return* yet.)
    - *Drag the sparsebundle to the cursor in terminal*, and it should fill in something like /Volumes/HardDrive/COMPUTERNAME.sparsebundle for you. Now you can hit return, and the disk will mount.
    - After you are done browsing sparsebundle's mounted image, *eject the mounted disk* like you would any other disk (not the sparsebundle image itself, just the disk icon that appeared if you successfully mounted it).
    - Turn *Time Machine back on* in the System Preferences.
    Hope this helps.

  • Downloading  dmg  file and  Mounting Failed ??

    hi,
i might have messed up with the files on my ibook.
i somehow deleted previous users account and created mine As Admin. ..... however deleted user account is in deleted user folder as dmg file.
now when i log in my account as admin and download something > then Disk copier helper opens > then installation >> and finally Message comes .. Mounting Failed ( error 95 ).
this happened when i tried to download and install dmg file from internt
it also says that there is no file folder to handle this file
How can i fix mounting problem on my User Account as Admin.
    thanks

I'm on the same boat. I called Apple Support. They made me clean cache, create a new user, yada yada yada. Nothing helped. Last resort was to re-install OSX Snow 10.6.2
I did so, doing an ERASE then moving files/programs back from Time Machine. Right after OS was just installed, I was able to download anything. After I did an upgrade to the latest combo patch to 10.6.2 I was back in "no download land"
I have Google Chrome (no dice), FireFox (no dice)....
Help! I don't want to have to re-install everything again!

  • DISM "you do not have permissions to mount and modify this image"

I have tired to mount a vista and 7 WIM to add a service pack, but I keep getting the error "you do not have permissions to mount and modify this image"
I'm running as administrator I'm running from the waik, I was able to mount with readonly permissions but that not what I need.

Thanks Juboori, this solved the issue for me too.
The odd thing though is that the "Read Only" attribute was NOT ticked in the Right-Click Properties windows but it WAS enabled when checking via a DOS command prompt.
    How to check in DOS:
"Attrib Install.wim" (you'll see the 'R' attribute is enabled)
    How to disable in DOS
"Attrib Install.wim -R" (Removes the 'Read Only' attribute)

  • Dmg images won't automatically mount anymore

Yesterday when I downloaded the new Flash 10 dmg file I noticed a strange thing. When I double-click on it it opens Disk Utility instead of mounting with disk utility. Disk Utility just opens and sits there on the screen. You can then choose the dmg and mount it manually from within Disk Utility and manually close it when done. Any ideas? Thanks,
    Matt

Try repairing the DMG file in Disk Utility. Drag it into Disk Utility's list of devices, select it and run the repair process.
Try opening the DMG from a new user account and see if it works from there.
    And [here's a thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8058265&#8058265] that seems relevant.

  • Copy file from mounted DMG to the Applications folder?

I'm wanting to copy file (application) from a mounted DMG to the Applications folder. Something like:
    tell application "Finder"
    try
    copy "Volumes:Dropbox Installer:Dropbox.app" to folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications"
    end try
    end tell
    (But that doesn't work).
Preferably overwriting the existing application in that folder. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    tell application "Finder"
duplicate file "Volumes:S001TEST:S001-S001c-TEST.zip" to folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications" with replacing
    end tell
I tried this principle in Applescript (Mavericks) and received error...
Finder got an error: Can’t set folder "Volumes:Macintosh HD:Applications" to file "Volumes:S001TEST:S001-S001c-TEST.zip".
"001TEST" is a disk image with filename of "S001TEST.dmg"
Any ideas why this won't work?

  • Files disappearing from mounted .DMG files

Hi, I've had this issue occur a few times in Tiger and I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this and if there's a known workaround. Sometimes, when browsing a disk image, or, less commonly, a physical disc like a CD, files in the Finder will seem to disappear from the image/disk when clicked on. First the filenames will go, then the files themselves, and evidently those files then become unreadable in general as applications can't access them. I don't get any error messages; it's just like the filesystem on that disk eats itself away and vanishes. I can unmount the disk without any issue.
I'm having this problem right now with any disk image I mount on my XServe -- it goes through the "Verify" step just fine, shows up on my desktop, I can browse and even open files, but inevitably within a very short period of time the above occurs, and it becomes useless. I KNOW it can't be the .dmg file that's the problem, because if I share the .dmg over Personal File Sharing and mount it from another Mac, this problem does NOT occur. It's just on the one Mac hosting the files. Any idea what this could mean, and what could solve it?
Also, I know a lot of times a restart will cure this weird little glitches, but I would really like a solution, if you know what I mean... particularly on a server, I cannot afford to restart whenever I have a problem.

Sounds like you have run into a very strange, and unfortunately no uncommon, bug involving file systems from either servers or FAT 32 mounted external drives. See this discussion:

Read on down away to see some replies from people who did some pretty thorough investigations of the problem.

  • HELP: Cannot restore DMG image stored on NTFS disk!

Hello. My MacBook Pro has OSX Lion on it.
I have created a DMG image of my starting volume using Disk Utility. The image was saved on an NTFS formatted external USB disk. I used Paragon NTFS for Mac to activate writing on NTFS partitions. The image was created, tested and it mounted fine. It's size is 105GB.
I have restarted the system and am accessing Disk Utility from the recovery partition that OSX Lion creates. Disk Utility can see the NTFS disk and I can choose the DMG image as source and the partition on the internal hard disk as a target without problems but when I press the restore button and the Image scan process is going to start I just get an error that says "Unabke to scan Mac-OSX HD. Resource busy". When I try the SCAN BEFORE RESTORE command on Disk Utility on the image I am getting "Unable to scan MAC IMAGE.DMG (Not such file or directory)".
I have already erased my startup disk and really need to get this image back in place. It is the only backup I have of my data.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the fast answer. Excuse my question but are you certain of this? This would be a big job because I would have to:
    1. Find another external hard disk. Most probably it will be NTFS formatted because this and FAT32 are the most common formats out there.
    2. Find another apple computer to transfer the image to the other hard disk
    3. Format my external hard disk as a HFS disk
    4. Transfer the DMG image back to the HFS hard disk.
    5. After this reformat my external hard disk as NTFS because I live in an hybrid world where PCs and Macs coexist and NTFS is a good bet for compatibility.
If you indeed are certain that that is the correct answer to this situation then I will move into it immediately.
    Thanks.
