TimeMachine Back-up to DVD?

Is it possible? Can you use your built-in DVD burner on a Mac Book? How do you do it? I can't seem to get that option when I start-up TimeMachine.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Not from Time Machine, because that's an automated, incremental backup program. You can't write stuff once an hour to a DVD, only a hard drive.
You can, of course, make your own manual backups to DVD (by dragging from the Finder onto the blank disk that mounts to your desktop), or use another backup program such as Apple's Backup (if you have MobileMe).

I am migrating to a new iMac via TimeMachine back up.  My iPhoto libraries are on an external drive.  Both drives are backed up on Time Machine.  I'd like to migrate only the old internal hard drive data to the new internal Drive and then just plug in iPhoto library drive to the new iMac.  This would save having to transfer several hundred GBs of data.  Will this work using Set Up Assistant?

Your user account on the new Mac must have a different UID than on the old one.  See the pink box in Problems after using Migration Assistant for an explanation.
You'll need to change the permissions on the iPhoto library on the external HD.  Do a Get Info on it, click the padlock at the bottom of the Sharing & Permissions section of the Info window and enter your Admin password.
Then click the plus sign, select the user account you want on the next screen, and click Select.   Then change Read only to Read & Write for that user via the little arrows.  Finally, click the "gear" icon and select Apply to enclosed items.  That may take a few mintutes on a large library.

  • HT201250 I have mac 10.6.8 and wanted to back up to DVDs. How can I do it?

I have mac 10.6.8 and want to back up everything on DVDs. Is it possible, if it is how can I do it?

Backing up to DVDs is a time-wasting exercise and doesn't provide you with a bootable alternative. I suggest that you invest in an ext FWHD and use something like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper! to put a bootable backup/clone onto it. See https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4449562?start=0&tstart=0 for more on this.
BTW, don't let the recall notice scare you into getting it replaced immediately. If there's nothing wrong with the HD, prepare for getting it replaced, but only after you've followed all the steps outlined above. FWIW, if you're within 50 miles of an Apple repair station, they most likely will do an onsite repair since it's a desktop machine.

  • HELP!How to create HD disc that will play back in HD DVD or Blu-Ray player?

Footage comes from Panasonic HVX200 as DVCPRO HD 1080i60, all appropriate settings made in FCP5 to edit. Have already made SD DVD, whoopie.
Now client is interested in real HD version that they can play back on HD DVD or Blu-Ray set top unit. Of all my research, I've discovered little about how to make a "real" HD video disc. OSX doesn't support Blu-Ray burning, OK. What about HD DVD burning support? And what drive to purchase for this application?
I understand DVD Studio will allow me to author a disc with HD content...that I can burn onto DVD5. Useless to the client. Need to burn on either Blu-Ray or HD DVD media.
Aside from encoding in Compressor, what do I do when I need to make this HD disc happen? Compressor step seems easy enough to figure out. Just very unclear on how to burn out appropriate video disc.
    Thanks for your help.

    For Blu-Ray creation:
I'm curious if DVDit! works in parallels too, though it will certainly work in BootCamp. The question is what format should FCP/Compressor output to in order for DVDIt, etc. on BC or Parallels need in order to create the disc?
MPEG-2 and H.264 should work, but who knows?
In the meantime, I have HDV source footage that I edit. I print the final edit back to HDV for archiving, and burn a HD-DVD on a DL DVD+R red laser disc to show on my Toshiba HD-DVD player using DVDSP. It works, and I can get about 40 minutes of MPEG-2/HDV on there without transcoding at 1080i and it looks fantastic.
In the future, I hope to be able to dump the HDV final edit onto a Blu-Ray disc. I'm guessing Adobe Encore will be needed on the Mac for that.
The point here is there certainly are options that work. I do wish Apple added Blu-Ray burning capability.
There's still room for that, however... FCS 1 (and even now 2, with AVCHD support, albeit non-native) have histories of adding new support for codecs, etc. in free updates.

  • How to Use A Timemachine Back Up Drive for backup and storage?

I bought a 1TB external drive, and installed a 1TB SSD in my Macbook Pro 13in Early 2011 i-5, and have 426gb free, the other 200 or so is for bootcamp. I used the external as a timemachine back up, but there should be some extra space right??? I need someplace for storage for my videos and photos for work, and I don't want to go out and buy another 500gb external. Can I just use the one for timemachine for both timemachine and storage?

I plan on getting a second drive eventually but this is more of a last minute kind of transfer, i need to take a bunch of wedding videos and move them over to my laptop, and I don't have the money or time to get another external.
how would I use the current one I have for storage, because when I plugged it in it reads it only as a time machine back up and drive and opens differently, I don't have it on me now to test it again, but just drag and drop files into it?

Drag the folders to the external drive, and if prompted, click Authenticate. You'll probably be asked for an administrator password.

  • My second post!  Backing up to DVD?

How do you guys back up your songs/projects? I was told that backing up to DVD is a good way to do it, but I don't know how.
    Thanks again,

    One further thought.
If you use many third party components to create your songs with you might want to lock those tracks and create freeze files before you burn to a DVD.
In this way you will not be completely dependent on those third party AU's and AU synths should you come back at a later date to remaster your songs.
Last year out of stupid curiosity I played around with some of my OS X files and the outcome was that I ended up losing many of my third party AU's. It took me a long time before I could replace them and was unable to play or remaster many songs.
Often an update for an AU comes along and is a bit different than the previous version and this can cause a problem or two.
If you archive without freeze files you may wish you had later on in a year or two.

  • Archive back ups on DVDs in Lightroom

I'm in the process of importing (MOVING) all images into Lightroom as my ONLY image storage. It's possible to download files to DVD on IMPORT BUT WHY BACK UP images that may be culled once in Lightroom? I've set the schedule for back up to hard drive in Lightroom and also back up to an external drive. So, do I have to EXPORT the keepers, then re-IMPORT them in order to back up to DVDs? Seems like the long way around. Just forget about DVDs? Am I missing something here?
Also, which is the proper location for FOLDERS -- lr.cat or lr.data?

    Hi Joia.
I'm a bit late on this but wanted to ask if you are backing up your catalog. (the Ircat file)? And your pictures where ever they are.
I haven't used Lightroom since my trial ended. Am waiting for a couple of features before I buy it. But have learned from losing a lot of work that backups are a high priority. I "think" you can just copy the Ircat file to an external hard drive. You can probably find the answer to that by a search for "backup" or "backing up" in the forum.
By the way, it IS a good idea to also back your pictures up to DVDs periodically. It's often recommended by professionals and those who care about their pictures. Hard drives fail. Two hard drives can fail. When I lost a year of work, I had three backups and all three failed at the same time, though I imagine that is rare.
The best way is to back up your pictures (and catalog) to an external hard drive and then to DVDs once a week or month depending on how many new ones you take. How much work are you comfortable with losing?
It is much easier to store a DVDs backup set in another place. I have a safety deposit box for one set and store another at my daughter's house because it is more accessible there. If we have a fire or theft, at least my photos won't be lost.
Please don't be embarrassed about asking questions. We all had to start from the beginning. Sometimes questions are noticed and answered generously by helpful people on this forum. Other times I haven't had any answers. It's worth a try.
I think it's great that you are not letting age stop you from learning a new hobby. My husband is 76 and he won't go near a computer. I don't pick new things up easily like I did when I was younger and it can be frustrating. But you will gradually understand more as you continue.

  • Won't let me back up to dvds

I'm trying to back up itunes right now and it the keeps on opening my cd drive, which doesn't recognize dvds. So, I put the dvd in the drive that recognizes it and itunes doesn't do anything. I've tried it with several different disks.
I also can't use CDs because they don't have enough space. I tried using a CD, but it said there was stuff that was larger than the disk, so it wouldn't work.

Just to be clear--make sure your "burning" options match your DVD wants. To do this, click on (in iTunes) Edit>Advanced>Burning Tab> then make sure your DVD button is clicked.

  • DOWNLOADED THE LATES ITUNES BUT NOW I CAN NOT FIND THE BACKUP  OPTION IN THE LIBRARY. BACK UP TO DVD, SO HOW IS THE BEST WAY TO HANDLE THIS?

I DOWNLOADED THE LATEST UPDATE TO ITUNES AND NOW CAN NOT FIND HOW TO BACKUP MY LIBRARY

The backup to disk option was removed as of iTunes 10.4. If you want to back up your tracks to a CD, you can as a workaround put the tracks in a playlist and then use the Burn Playlist to Disk command and select a data disk as the format. If you want to back up your tracks to a DVD now, you'll need to use other software. Unless your library is pretty small, though, it's probably a lot more effective to just copy the entire iTunes folder to an external hard drive or USB flash drive.

  • Back up to dvd taking too long?

I am trying to back up my entire library to a data dvd disc. I am following the steps outlined: file, library, burn to disc, etc...however, when I finally click burn to disc, NOTHING happens...my entire library is 2.90 GB..I am using an external DVD burner and itunes does recognize it as it gives me an option...please help....

I would love to use an external drive to back up my itunes, but I can't see where it will let me do that. The burner is the only option offered. I would also only like to back up some of it. Can that be done? No, not just the most recent. I don't care about some of it, but some I want to keep somewhere else. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Just bought a bunch of new songs and went to back them up in iTunes 7.3 and I keep getting error code 261(0x00000105).
Any ideas? Did not have this problem in prior versions. Brner works fine with other programs.

Keep getting the same error as well. Run cd/dvd diagnostics and it should tell you... "The last failed data CD or DVD burn had error code 261(0x00000105)".

  • Backing up my DVD SP / Final Cut Pro project

I have an external HD of 250 Gb, but this is insufficient to store all the data of my various video/DVD projects. So, when I have finished a video project and burned the final DVD, after some time I delete the .MOV, .M2V, .AIF etc. files which were all part of it. After all, I now can copy my own DVD.
I also delete the .FCP and .DSPPROJ files, even though they don't occupy much space. For my Panasonic videocam I have to use Capture Now (in FCP), so little chance to restore the whole project as it was.
Still, I think this is hardly satisfying. Every now and then, I see an old DVD and I would like to add something, e.g. a subtitle stream or a audio stream. Or make another little edit.
Is not there a way to make a back up of a DVD SP or FCP project in its original state, which does not take more space than the DVD where the whole thing in the end is burned on? Or, let's say, a couple of DVD's? Buying another extra HD for this is no option, because of the cost.

If you have encoded your video and audio assets in Compressor then they should be separate .m2v and AC3/AIFF files along with your DVDSP project in the same folder. Because these files are already compressed, most of the time the folder with the DVDSP proj and assets would fit on a 4.7 GB DVD-R disk.
DVDSP has issues with pathnames to assets, so if you copy a proj and assets to another drive you'll have to go in and relink all the assets, but that doesn't take too much time if you know where everything is.
With FCP you're pretty much out of luck with a project of any size. The only way I can imagine you'd be able to re-edit a FCP project once you've trashed all the capture files, etc would be to have exported the project as a full quality Quicktime movie as a .dv file. It will be a big file, with an hour-long project ending up at about 10 GB QT movie.
I do this with all my FC projects, because I can't afford, like you, to tie up so much HD space with capture files, etc. but I want a self-contained movie that I can stick somewhere. You may also be able to print your project back out to videotape, and then if you want to mess with it you can recapture.
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I get sound back on my DVD player on my MacBookPro?

My MacBook is new but I am in a foreign country with no access to help. I exercise with DVDs and as of today none of the DVDs have sound. The computer speakers are fine, as iTunes will play. But no sound when I play a DVD... not through the computer, the TV I hook it to, or using little external speakers. Everything was working fine as of yesterday. I have checked all hook-ups and mute buttons. When I go to systems preferences while it's hooked up to the TV via HDMI (which always worked before) I get the message that there "are no output controls on the selected device." I am at a loss and would appreciate some help. Thank you.

    First try resetting the PRAM:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14222
If that doesn't do it, reset the SMC:

  • How can I take pictures back from a DVD created on my Mac and put them back in iPhoto?..

I made a DVD from iPhoto and iMovie but I accidentally deleted the photos from iPhoto. The only copy I hav is a DVD. Is there a way to get the pictures from the DVD back to iPhoto?

    Hi
As Old Toad writes. No You can not get 100% quality back.
    You can though.
    Play DVD with VLC-player
    PAUSE
cmd+Shift+4 - click and select photo area - or -
    cmd+Shift+3 - click and make a ScreenDump
Quality will be - size of the screen and 72dpi
    • So set screen in Max Size e.g. 1440x900 or more
    • BUT as DVD is interlaced SD-Video - no setting will be any better than this
And that will be the best You can do - still POOR - but usually better than Nothing !
NTSC (29.97fps) 520 lines - about 640x480 pixels (square) 720x480 rectangular (narrow) pixels
PAL  (25 fps)   625   lines - about 768x576 pixels (square) 720x576 rectangular (narrow) pixels
And if You creaded Your movie in iMovie'08 to 11 - only half of the line resolution is left - So I guess that
    320 x 480 or
    384 x 576
Will be the best possible resulting photos.
    Yours Bengt W
