Timemachine backs up all iTunes music every hour

Hi,
My Timemachine disk is running full. After read the FAQ I used the TimeTracker app to figure out what was backed up. It turns out that every backup contains a full copy of my Music/iTunes/ folder. Why does it keep making a complete backup of that folder?
It used to work perfectly. But I lost my harddrive and had to restore from the timemachine disk, shortly after the restore the backup disk was full so my problem could be related to the restore.
Any ideas?

TimeTracker shows that the size of every backup is around 39GB. When I drill down inside TimeTracker it says the itunes folder is around 39GB.
If this is limited to your user account, and only affects iTunes, something may be corrupted on your internal HD.
Verify your internal HD, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). As noted there, if that finds problems, see the yellow box to fix them.
If it's ok, try an experiment. If your iTunes folder is in your Music folder, put a small test file in the Music folder, but not in the iTunes folder. (If it's somewhere else, put a test folder in the same folder that contains your iTunes folder).
Then exclude the iTunes folder from backups temporarily, per #10 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Run a backup, then another. See if the test file gets backed-up both times.
Post back with the results; then we can figure out how to fix it.

  • Time Machine does not back up all iTunes music files

Hello, I'm trying to view the music files, on my Time Machine backup disc, from a CD that I recently imported into iTunes. My iTunes library resides on my hard drive. The backup disc shows files for some of the other music that is in my iTunes library, but not from the new CD. I did several backups after importing the new music, but the song files still do not show up in Time Machine. Any ideas for why the files don't show up?
My ultimate aim is to copy those music files onto another computer, but my research on the support pages suggests that I should not do it this way. Instead, I will copy the music files onto another disc (not using Time Machine) and then import them onto the other computer. Please confirm that this is the best way to proceed.
But in the meantime, I'm wondering why Time Machine does not show my newly imported music.
Thanks very much for any help you can provide.

    New formulation of my question:
A file dated at 10:00 may not appear in the back-up dated 11:00.

If Other (the yellow bar) is too big something is corrupted.  The only solution (that I know of) is to restore from your most recent backup using iTunes (see http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1766).

    Hello, Gazzlaa84.
You can import your media a couple different ways.  If you plan on keeping the media on the external drive, I would just direct iTunes to read the media folder on the external.  Here are the steps on how to make that change.

  • Why does itunes randomly put my music in my trash and how can I get them back into my itunes music list? How can I prevent it from occurring again?

Itunes has randomly placed some of my songs (it has done this a few times now. Not all of them but at times hundreds/thousands) in my trash and I don't know why this happens. How can I replace them back into my itunes music library? Is there a reason this is happening? What can I do so it doesn't happen again?

iCloud is not a backup system for Macs or PC's. Backup your music some other way (iTunes Match?)

  • Airport Extreme with a USB Hard Drive to a store all iTunes music

Can you plug in a USB external Hard Drive to a Airport Extreme to store all iTunes music (or other files) and then access this from all wireless devices?

Yeah the backup is where I'm getting stuck. Seems just keeping the files on my local hard drive is the easiest but that would essentially require a new computer as I'm running a 2008 Macbook Pro and don't want to upgrade it.

  • Itunes wont back up all the music on my iphone4 only purchased

I have purchased music on my phone4. I also have music that was on my old CD collection which I ripped and imported into my itunes library on my computer. So my iphone now has purchased music from itunes store as well as my old music collection ripped and converted to itunes format.
I got a new computer and authorized it on itunes. I also have icloud service set up. When I attempt to back up my iphone it only backs up my purchased from itunes music but not all my other owned music not purchased on itunes. The songs are there on my iphone and play fine, just wont back up.
I found a downloadable software for $29 that claims it will asssit me in transferring my iphone content but seems like I should not have to purhcase software just to back up my iphone.
    any suggestions?

    Hello Chascott2012
Your best bet is to have access to the old computer to transfer the music to your new computer, the article below will assist with that.

  • No computer with iTunes. Anyway to back up all my music on phone?

Including songs not purchased on iTunes? Somebody bought me an Android tablet and would like to get all my music, both iTunes bought and songs not bought there from my uPhone to new tablet. Is this possible?
    Thanks!

Open up your start menu and go to Music. Then go to iTunes > iTunes Media > Music > [Artist Name] > [Album Name]. Then copy your song and get it on your Android Device.

  • All iTunes music lost after hard drive crashed

After upgrading to Snowleopard, I noticed my computer acting odd and constantly freezing. I took it to get checked and to back up all my data. I was told they could back up my data, wipe the hard drive and upload my data again...but then I was told that my data was encrypted, therefore it could not be restored. As a result, I lost ALL my files including all of my iTunes music. Is there a way to request a redownload from iTunes? I've been told by friends that only one request will ever be granted per customer. I really hope there's a way to restore my music. It's not like I chose to download my music illegaly. I chose to do it legally throuh iTunes and pay for my music. Please help me, my iTunes library was fairly large and I can't bare the thought of all of it being lost.
Any help and guidance would be extremely helpful. Thank you!

just a remark : of course each & every one should be responsible for one's music & as you say, if one looses all our cd's, the record store doesn't have to replace them - granted !
having said that & considering how much it costs Apple a download replacement service for such instances & how few people would actually use it , it seems to me it's a brilliant
''extra'' to add to the iTunes Store roster of features - one that makes it even more appealing ? : ''..don't worry , if anything goes wrong you can always get it back..''
i'd call this offering peace of mind ( VERY attractive.. ) others would call it good marketing policy - you pick !

  • Backing up my iTunes music to an external hard drive

    Hi,
Rather than continue to backup my music to CD's, I'm going to purchase an external hard drive soon. What I'd like to do is use the external HD as an archive for restore purposes. My goal is to have two copies of my music, one copy on my iBook and one copy on the external HD. This is possible correct? All I would have to do is drag my "iTunes" folder on to my external HD correct? If there is more I'd have to do please explain.
    Thanks for your assistance,
    Marvin Jackson

An external hard drive is a good choice. Backing iTunes up by copying the iTunes folder is a good idea. Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?

  • When backing up your iTunes music, how are the files saved?

I am planning to upgrade from 10.3 to 10.4 and don't want to lose all of my music. From what I can tell I have 2 options I can either use a CD (my ibook does not have a DVD-RW, but a DVD) or an external drive. My library size including the podcasts total 6.4GB. Should I just use the external drive or just back them up on CD's?

    Hi Anthony.
Just to confirm and elaborate a bit on what Diane has already said...
I just backed up my iTunes Library on disk recently (I don't have an external drive yet) and it took quite some time. I had about half of what you've got and I used 15 disks. Not to mention, I guess they will do in a pinch but I've been told that the quality just doesn't make the transition very well.
