TimeMachine doesn't recognize network volume

I have a linux server where I want to backup my MacBook Pro. I have set up an AFP share using netatalk. The shares work well in Finder and from the command line. The volume seems to be mounted correctly, but when I try to assign TimeMachine to use that volume (or any of the volumes that are shared using netatalk) the volumes are not listed.
To be honest, I'm not even sure where to begin trouble shooting this, as I am not that familiar with TimeMachine. Several support articles talk about TM seeing the drive but not backing up to it properly. But this seems to be a different issue, since I can't even see the drive in TM.
Thanks for any assistance or direction.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Time Machine does not back up to network drives, except Time Capsules or USB drives connected to an Airport Extreme, or a drive on a Leopard server.
Here's the official word: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1733
You may find some "hacks" that might make it work, in some cases, to a degree. But use them at your own risk.
First, since this is *unsupported by Apple,* there's nowhere to go when there's trouble.
Second, you're risking a future update preventing it from working, and perhaps rendering your backups useless.
If you still think this is a good idea, do yourself a favor before you bet your backups on it: be sure it really works, at least for now:
1. Get a copy of CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! or the like, and make a full bootable clone of your internal HD, on an external disk. Test it by booting from it. Then reboot from your internal HD.
2. Let TM do it's first, full, initial backup.
3. Attempt a full system restore (like you'll need when, not if, your internal HD fails), via the instructions in item 14 of the +Frequently Asked Questions+ post at the top of this forum.
Again, even if it works today, tomorrow is another day . . .

  • 10.6 Installer Doesn't Recognize RAID0 Volume

I currently have 10.5 installed on a 4-disk RAID0 volume on our Mac Pro. I am attempting to upgrade to 10.6 to the same volume, but the installer does not recognize it. The only installable volumes are the externals I have attached for Time Machine and some storage. I found the KB on the fsck is running so the volume isn't being displayed until it finishes, but I let the install sit overnight, and ran the terminal command to see if it was still running, and it was not. Still no RAID0 volume in the installable list. What else might cause this?

I had a similar problem with the 10.6 Installer not recognizing my RAID as updateable - didn't even "see" it. After consulting with the local MAC genius at the store I confirmed an upgrade path which was successful and listed below.
I was running Leopard 10.5.8 on a mirrored RAID containing two 500 GB drives with a third drive installed running Tiger.
    My steps:
    1. After erasing the third drive, cloned the RAID (10.5.8) to the third drive (Disaster Relief) using Drive Genius 3.
    2. Upgraded the drive to 10.6.4 (computer automatically restarts from the 10.6 drive)
    3. Used the Disk Utility in 10.6 to delete the old 10.5 RAID
    4. Erased each of the 500 GB drives. (I used the "write zeros" security option)
    5. Scanned each drive for bad blocks using Drive Genius 3 (just precautionary not necessary - hey I'm a bit paranoid with hard drives)
    6. Recreated the mirrored RAID in 10.6
    7. Cloned the 10.6 drive, Disaster Relief, to the new RAID
    8. Restarted on the new RAID as my normal startup disk.
    Notes:
    a. Recommend you disable Time Machine during the process.
    b. If you have Filemaker, be sure to deactivate BEFORE you upgrade the system or your activation key will not work after upgrade and you will have to call Filemaker for a new key.
    Hope this helps someone.

  • Acrobat X doesn't recognize network printer

Trying to get Acrobat 10 Pro to recognize my new printer that I've connected to on my home network. Works just fine on my desktop, but it won't recognize the printer in Acrobat on my laptop.
Laptop prints to new printer fine from other programs.
Acrobat is still showing a printer that has been completely uninstalled from the laptop, but of course, not the one that has recently been installed.
    Details...

Acrobat 10 Pro (newest upate... completely uninstalled, reinstalled and updated)
Brand new Brother MFC-9970cdw printer with drivers installed properly from CD (uninstalled properly and reinstalled... three times)
I've read tons of posts all over the internet and nothing answers this issue.
    PLEASE HELP!!
    Thanks.

There seems  to be a problem related to installation/set up of printer device using Laptop. Kindly re-install the printer.

  • Firefox 5.0 doesn't recognize network file folder links

Version 3.6 worked with the following syntax:
    file://///networkserver/folder1/folder2/
Version 5.0 doesn't respond to this syntax.

hm, that is fascinating. Hold on, let me shut off Apache and see if that makes a difference.
Ok, so you have a link to a directory and you want to view the directory contents in firefox using the windows file path, and you are not running a web server application like Apache, correct? (you would know if you were.)
Now, you can view it fine when you type it in, but when you click a link to it, it doesn't work?
Is that link in an html page? A word document?
Are you getting a specific error?
I just went in and made a really basic HTML page and linked to a local directory and accessed it through it's windows file path using Firefox 5 and I'm not having any trouble viewing the file listing of the directory when clicking on the link to it; so for what it's worth, it ''is ''possible in firefox 5.
I was able to get it to work two ways. One, using the full file path including the drive.
    So, for a full path:
    * a href="file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/username/Desktop/test"
    and for a local path:
    * a href="test"
    * or
    * a href="./test"
To get a relative link to work, I had to drop any starting / or file:/// (which in this case is like http:// so you wouldn't use that for a relative link anyways; it's invalid syntax from a conceptual level)
    Does that help any?

  • Replaced internal hard drive, time machine doesn't recognize as same volume

    Howdy,
The hard drive (call it drive "X") on my iMac (one of the 2005 models) was dying so I had it replaced. I rebuilt the new drive (drive "Y") from my most recent time machine backup (from external drive "A"). I am now having problems with one of my backup devices, in that time machine doesn't recognize that the new disk is conceptually the same thing that had been backed up before (same volume name).
More details... I rotate my backups monthly through three external drives (I store the most recent offsite). After the disk replacement and restore process, I continued to use that backup drive (drive "A") without noticing any problem. Then it came time to rotate my external drives, and time machine doesn't find enough space on the next backup drive (drive "B"). Presumably this is because it doesn't realize that the drive I am backing up ("Y") is a copy of the drive that had previously been backed up on "B" ("X").
Is there any way to convince it they are the same? Or am I in the same boat as this poster:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2770362&tstart=0
Basically I just want to verify that I am in that same boat before I remove old backup files on "B". If I do decide I need to remove those, are the instructions linked in thread 2770362 correct, or are there better ones?
    Thanks for any help,
    Bob H

Actually, the backup I deleted above was the backup for the new internal drive. Apparently TM had created the (incomplete) backup during the failed attempt that ran out of space on the backup device. Since the new internal drive had the same name as the old internal drive, I didn't initially realize that's what I was deleting. Not that deleting it causes any harm, but it didn't address the original problem of freeing up space on the backup device.
Not to worry though. I've figured out how to get at the backups for the old internal drive, and am in the process of deleting those. I was about to follow the instructions in your troubleshooting items E3 and E2, but upon attempting to enter time machine I stumbled into the right place. Since I had previously told TM to do no backups (because there was still not enough disk space), and since I'd left the backup device connected, when I pulled up the TM menu from the menu bar, the usual "Enter Time Machine" menu was replaced by "Browse Other Time Machine Disks" (or perhaps "Disks" was "Backups"). This then gave me a list of the machines that I'd backed up on this backup device (in my case machine names and internal drive names are the same). Of course one of those was for the old internal drive, and after choosing it I roughly followed the same course of action as I did a few days ago, to initiate deletion.
I also saw how I could delete each of those old backups individually, but decided against that as I did not expect it would free up enough space. My expectation is that nearly all the space is shared among all the backups for the same source drive, since relatively very little changes between backups.

  • Airport doesn't recognize my network and/or shuts off.

When I use my Macbook 2008 with Snow Leopard, the Airport often shuts off  and/or doesn't recognize my network. What usually happens is first the network isn't recognized, then it shuts off completely. I have another Macbook 2008, same model, but with Leopard and no problems. They are both the same: 2.4 ghz core 2 duo.

Well, I found my own solution. Updated the Firefox server and problem solved.

  • Can't eject network volume after extensive browsing

    Hi!
I have a problem that seem to be related to Mac OS X itself.
After browsing an AFP network volume for an extended time theres a quite big chance that the volume won't eject properly.
What happens is that the volume icon vanishes from the desktop but it stays in the side bar of a Finder window.
Even if one waits for hours it still won't go away and upon clicking on the volume in the sidebar a dialog comes up saying it can't be found.
I've tried doing "sudo -f umount /Volumes/volumename" but it doesn't do anything.
If one tries to do a restart the system gets stuck because it can't properly unmount the volume.
If one force a relaunch of the Finder via the "Force Quit..." menu option in the Apple menu, what happens is that the AFP Client process stalls. It shows up red in Activity Monitor.
I can reproduce this behavior on several different computers and on G5's browsing the volume sometimes leads to a Kernel Panic involving "vnode_put".
All machines are running Mac OS X 10.4.8.
The AFP volume I'm browsing when this happens consists of several folders that contains several .eps images. The file-structure looks like in this screen shot: http://home.mac.se/star-affinity/filestructure.png
    Anyone else recognize this?
    G4 Quicksilver 867 MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

The volumes are mounted via the Finder.
Ok, I'll try remove all the "dot" files I can find, but I can guarantee you it has got nothing to do with the volume not unmounting properly. :P
No, but seriously, I have made a clean install of the system on both machines and upgraded it to 10.4.8. I then duplicate 4 different .eps files that I copy from a third machine and I duplicate them and make a file structure somewhat like in the screen shot I link to above.
I then start file sharing on the machine with all the files and use the other to browse this machine. I browse from within the open/save dial of TextEdit.
I must say I wonder how any hidden files would cause a problem in this case.
I also wouldn't say that there are many issues with Tiger. It is this thing with network browsing and perhaps some kind of video driver issue that I've posted about here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=3302238#3302238
Otherwise I think it runs great!
    Can't understand why you're still at 10.3.9.
Anyway, thanks for trying to help!

  • Migrated old back-up to new MacBook Pro, but now new machine doesn't recognize old back-up

So last night I migrated my old back-up to my new MacBook Pro, but this morning my new machine doesn't recognize my old back-up. I'd rather not erase and back-up from scratch for numerous reasons (losing the old data, time, etc).
Any suggestions? I'll bet this is a realatively common issue?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Looking back, at your original posts....it said it needed 774 GB?? is that at all reasonable for a full backup of your system??
Maybe there's something more than meets the eye?
Also maybe we can figure out what went wrong with the tmutil command. It is possible that you may have to use additional options.
But first le's see who owns the old backup....
From the terminal command line try this:
sudo xattr -l "path to your backup"
Where "path to your backup" is tha same path exactly as used in the tmutil command, that is:
    /Volumes/"Backups Device Name"/Backups.backupdb/"Backup Name"
You should get something like this for output:
    com.apple.backupd.BackupMachineAddress:
    00000000  30 30 3A 31 64 .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..  |00:1d:..:..:..:.|
    00000010  34 00                                            |4.|
    00000012
    com.apple.backupd.HostUUID:
    00000000  41 34 32 30 43 .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..  |A420Cxxxxxxxxxxx|
    00000010  .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..  |xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx|
    00000020  32 37 37 42 00                                   |277B.|
    00000025
    com.apple.backupd.ModelID: MacPro3,1
The "BackupMachineAddress" is the MAC address of the Ethernet port your mother board.
You can find the MAc address in About this Mac-> More Info. -> System report -> Network -> Ethernet 1
The "HostUUID" is the identifier of your mother board.
You can find it in About this Mac-> More Info. -> System report ->Hardware Overview  [that's the first thing that shows when you select System report]
These are the way the connection of the backup to a machine is made.
Now the tmutil inheritbackup comand should have set them to the correct values for your new machine.
But let's' see if any of them match the new machine and then see of we haveany more options.

    HELP HELP

To confirm, your existing mail client isn't communicating with your existing and remote mail services at Dreamhost? Which mail client are you using (Apple mail?), and how is mail on the client set up?
It would initially seem that your client is still referencing the server, either for its inbound or outbound mail. (And I'm not sure how unplugging the server helps here, unless there's some sort of a configuration issue, or a duplicate network address or such.) This would usually be something within the configuration of the mail client.
The Mac OS X Server is significantly easier than the many other servers and server operating systems I've dealt with over the years, but it requires reading the manuals and/or some knowledge of networking and of server environments.
Small shops and home folks without the time or inclination to "spin up" on these server areas can be well-served with some help initially configuring the server. Servers are different from clients. Stuff that you're implicitly used to using when you're running a client -- the DHCP server, for instance -- are what the servers provide you with.
As for Mac OS X Server and particularly if you head outside of the default settings and sequences and off into the customizations, which is what has happened here, you might want to engage some assistance. Not just for the direct and obvious initial set-up sequence, but also for getting you set-up and started with backups and other such tasks. Before you get too deep in here and get too much underway and too much saved on your disks, do seriously consider getting somebody in to help set this box up for you.
Mac OS X Server is not "no IT", but it is rather closer to "less IT" than most. Particularly once you get it configured and running.

  • Mini doesn't recognize airport

My mini doesn't recognize the airport card. I have restarted my rounter, modem and my mac but no luck. All software on my Mini is up to date and other computers are connected to the network. The network tab in System Preferences doesn't give me an option to connect to airport.

In this thread, your first post suggests you are running MacOS 10.4.8, but the second that you have 10.4.10. If you are running the latter, did the Airport work before and since stop? Perhaps around the time of the update?
Do you see any sign of Airport, such as the empty fan in the menu bar?
In the network preferences (and I apologize, I don't presently have a Mac running Tiger to test this on), when you click to add an interface and select Airport, does it then show the hardware to be present?
Some time ago I was tracking a series of posts on www.macfixit.com which related to Airport issues in 10.4.10. It was suggested that if the Airport card was not recognized, to try an SMC reset (Intel Systems) or PMU Reset (PPC minis) Other issues could occasionally be resolved by removal of AppleAirport.kext, AppleAirport2.kext and AppleAiport3.kext files from the >System>Library>Extensions folder, but you would need a source of rreplacements, either from your existing MacOS install disk or the latest Airport Updater downloaded from Apple. In either case you'd need a utility called Pacifist to extract just those files. Sadly I don't have a Tiger system on hand to test that out at present.
One troubleshooting step you might try is to create a new user account on the system and see if that account can 'see' the Airport card, thus indicating an issue at the user rather than systemwide level.
It is a good sign however that the Airport hardware is seen by the profiler. Basically that means it's failure in the system is software.
