TimeMachine flush index error: 0

I'm using OS X 10.6.8
Time Machine is configured to use an external drive connected via fw800
It seems to be stuck in a cycle (from console logs):
Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/video-DRIVE Q/Backups.backupd
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
Node requires deep traversal:/ reason: must scan subdirs|new event db|
(long time passes, an hour or two)
Error: Flushing index to disk returned an error: 0
Backup canceled.
Before this began to happen, I was getting errors about back up disk being full.  I tried deleting old backups manually to correct this (this backup disk stores the backups for three computers).  I transferred the old backup folders out of Backups.backupd to the trash, but I couldn't successfully empty the trash.  I ended up sudo rm -rf the directories in the trash folder to free up the space.  Time Machine has not successfully completed a backup since (syndrome is always the series of messages above)
I've tried repairing the backup disk and the backed-up (main system) disk.  I've also tried "resetting time machine" by moving the TimeMachine.plist file to another location (out of /Library/Preferences)
A file "2011-07-11-072049.inProgress" remains stubbornly in the backups folder.
Any ideas/answers would be much appreciated!  Thanks!

That's required after a failed backup (see #6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting), but unless you have an enormous amount of data, shouldn't take that long.
Error: Flushing index to disk returned an error: 0
Backup canceled.
A problem writing the index to your TM drive.
Before this began to happen, I was getting errors about back up disk being full.  I tried deleting old backups manually to correct this (this backup disk stores the backups for three computers).
You connect the drive to each Mac to do backups?   If so, it's a bit late now, but it's usually better to partition the TM disk, so one Mac's backups won't "crowd out" those from a different one.  See #4 in  Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
Or, if you're backing the Mini up directly, and the others via your network, the backups made over the network will be in separate sparse bundles.  It's a good idea to have them in separate partitions, too, in case you have to delete the backups for one -- you can just erase the partition.
I transferred the old backup folders out of Backups.backupd to the trash, but I couldn't successfully empty the trash.
Unfortunately, Apple doesn't do a very good job of warning folks not to do that via the Finder or Terminal.  You can delete individual backups, or all backups of selected items, via Time Machine.  See #12 in the FAQ.
I ended up sudo rm -rf the directories in the trash folder to free up the space.
Did that get all of them?  If so, that, and repairing the backup disk, usually fix it.
A file "2011-07-11-072049.inProgress" remains stubbornly in the backups folder.
That's a partial backup (actually a "package"), left over from one that failed or was cancelled.  Is it in the folder for the Mac in question, or a different one?  Normally, Time Machine will recover that on the next backup (so the files there don't have to be copied again).  Since all else has failed, you might try deleting it via the Finder and emptying the trash (that will take a while, of course).
It may be that the backups are damaged in a way Disk Utility can't detect.  That's rare, but does happen.
It's also possible that there's a problem with the external disk or the connection to it.
I'd say, try deleting the .inProgress package.  If that doesn't help, tell us how the backups are done (all direct, some via network, etc., in the same or separate partitions), and we'll try to find a fix.

  • Timemachine index error messages

I have read @Pondinis website in regards to index error messages at http://pondini.org/TM/D2.html
This is for my understanding only.  What is the difference between:
Waiting for index to be ready (101)
    and
Waiting for index to be ready (100)
I know how to fix the two above.  I just want to know what each means.  Is one failure to contact the disk due to the disk and the other failure to contact the disk due to the connection (eg usb issue), if so which is which?

Thanks @Linc. Apart from taking a half working disk and trying a timemachine backup, then doing the same with a good disk and a dud cable.  Any ideas, tools that I could use to test my theory?

  • TM on Drobo returns Error "Flushing index to disk returned an error: 0"

Hi, I'm using a sparse bundle on a Drobo (Drobo with Drobo Share / Drobo Dashboard) to back-up my Mac via TM together with TimeMachineEditor V2.5.3(26) to modify the schedule to only once a day. Since 4 months this just worked fine.

Thank you, Pondini, for insisting to go back to the other thread and try everything there. In fact, what I got wrong at first try was that I tried to look into the Sparsebundle (inspect contents) where I couldn't find the .Spotlight-V100 folder. After that I opened the Backup Volume of my iMac with Finder (having switched on hidden files before via TinkerTool) and - voilá - found the .Spotlight folder and canceled it. After that a first backup ran OK in rather short time. Thereafter the next backup took almost 2 days constantly saying: "Indexing Backup", but at the end it terminated successfully. So, everything seems to be alright now. And my old back-ups are still there :-))
    Yay!
However, to be honest, I still do not understand this behaviour of TM. For me it looks like a bug. If the .Spotlight-V100 folder causes the problem, and you can correct that by simply canceling the folder, why can't TM simply "disregard" the folder, or cancel it automatically ??
This is quite unusual. Corrupted files can make computers do all sorts of odd things. Clearly there was something very wrong in that index; +*Repair Disk+* can find many things, but not all. It will find problems in the various directories and catalogs that keep track of where files are. It may not find things that are wrong inside a file.

  • Error: Flushing index to disk returned an error: 0

I just had a full backup of a newly installed drive fail very near the end with this following message:
9/22/10 9:40:30 AM com.apple.backupd[1069] Error: Flushing index to disk returned an error: 0
    What is error 0?
(FWIW, Disk Utility says the TM volume is OK.)

    Hi Pondini!
Thanks for the informative response. Unfortunately, by the time I got it I had already deleted the .inProgress file and started from scratch. Turned out to be the right thing to do. I'm still not 100% sure what happened, but this is the best I can figure:
    1. I bought a new computer and set it up by restoring from my most recent TM backup of my old computer.
    2. I set up a brand new TM volume on an external drive (connected via a Spyderhub, though I don't think that made any difference). TM did a full backup of ~90GB which took about 10 hours.
    3. I then cloned the original hard drive in the new computer using SuperDuper onto an SSD.
    4. I swapped the SSD for the original drive.
    5. In order to be able to plug in the old hard drive as a backup without the system getting confused by having two volumes with the same name, I changed the name of the SSD. In retrospect, I think this was my mistake.
    6. I ran TM and it stared doing a full backup, which ultimately failed. I wasn't tremendously surprised that it was doing a full backup, since I had changed the name of the volume.
Here's where it really starts to get interesting.
    7. I ran TM again as you suggested. As you predicted it was apparently very slow, taking many many hours to back up a few hundred MB. Before it was done I observed that the .inProgress file had doubled in size. It was now 160GB, but it was only backing up up 90GB. (The whole SSD drive was only 128GB.)
    8. I decided that TM was hopelessly confused and deleted the .inProgress file. It took over an hour to get rid of it. I also renamed the SSD back to the original volume name and started TM again, hoping that it would just do a regular incremental backup.
    9. TM appeared to be doing a full backup. So I stopped it, deleted the new .inProgress file, and renamed the SSD back to the new name. I figured that as long as I was going to have to do a full backup anyway I might as well have the drive named what I wanted it to be named.
    10. I started TM yet again, and again it appeared to be gearing up for a full backup. But it didn't do a full backup, it just did an incremental one. I'm guessing that just having the drive renamed back to its old name for even just the beginning of a backup cycle was enough for TM to figure out that the it was the same volume even after it was re-renamed.
So I now have a fully synced up time machine again and all is right with the world.

  • Reproducable TimeMachine indexing error. Help?

    *The Situation:*
    1) Everytime I logout or reboot my machine while Time Machine is running, the next time Time Machine runs it has an indexing error and I need to re-initialise the disk and then restart Time Machine on the new disk.

    3) This has occurred three times so far on the following disks:
    a) 2 different Western Digital 1TB MyBooks
    b) 1 Initio USB drive enclosure with a 500GB drive.
    Questions:
    1) I don't want to re-initialise this drive again. Is there anything I can do to the "Time Machine Backups" disk that will remove these errors and allow Time Machine to run without problems? Ideally, the solution would still allow me to use the backups that have been made previously on this disk.
    2) In the event that I need to re-initialise this disk, is there anything I can do to ensure that this doesn't occur again (other than not rebooting the machine or logging out while Time Machine is running)?

Between you, me, and the lamp post I would not trust my backups to Time Machine because of its reliability problems. Although there aren't any solid backup utilities that function quite like TM, there are plenty that can do archival backups. I prefer those that can do both clones and incremental backups. I really don't care about the incremental archival backups. But if you're interested in something other than Time Machine that can do all the TM does albeit not the same then check these out:
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    7. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
    10. MimMac (Shareware)
    11. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
My personal preference is Synchronize! Pro X. It's expensive as software goes but it's well supported, reliable, and extremely flexible. It supports scheduled, full, incremental, and archival backups. All backup programming is handled through configuration screens so you don't need to learn a scripting or programming language.
The all time king of Mac backup is Retrospect, but the current version is getting long in the tooth and Dantz/EMC has not updated it in some time. It's a PPC-only application currently, but works fine in Leopard. Supports spanning backups over multiple media and backs up to just about anything - disk drives, tape, optical discs, etc. Maintains a searchable index catalog making single file restoration as easy as finding the file in the catalog.

I know this is an old thread but I too am getting a column index error accessing an Oracle 10g database stored procedure using Crystal Reports XI, using the New Report wizard to select the stored procedure.  It prompts me for the sp parameters; I select "set to null" and click OK and get
Failed to retrieve data from the database. Details:  SQL Exception: [SQL State:] null [Error message:] Invalid Column Index [Database vendor code 17003]
I can run the procedure and get data just fine with no errors using PL/SQL.

    Hi,
Could you please make sure your binding style(Oracle Positional,Oracle named..etc) of the Seeded VO and Custom Vo are same.
This is the option you will get when you are extending your vo. So make sure that both are same.
You can refer the below link too

  • Getting index error on ActionListener in for loop

Hi, I am working on a little project where I want to create an array of buttons that each individually delete their record in an ArrayList, well everytime I press the delete button I get an index error, I have been toying around with it and just can't seem to find my error. • Oracle DB Query Generating Invalid Column Index error

    Dear All,
Apologies for a question on this rather basic error but I don't understand why i'm experiencing the behaviour described.
The piece of code below connects to a database, runs a query, then attempts to display the contents of the resultset. I understand from other posts on the topic that the query I am executing (INSERT INTO table VALUES (...)) as in the comments below needs to have autocommit disabled to allow me to access the resultset without the transaction closing.
      public void runQuery(String query) throws Exception {   Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver"); Connection con = DriverManager.getConnection(database, username, password); con.setAutoCommit(false); Statement st = con.createStatement();         ResultSet rs = st.executeQuery (query);         // "select * from user_tables"         // "INSERT INTO BH VALUES ('','2.25','Dark Red','Samsonite','4987638762')"         while (rs.next()) {         System.out.print (rs.getString(1)); // Exception thrown here     }         con.commit(); st.close();   con.close();   }
I have removed try {} catch {} error handling for clarity.
I am receiving the invalid column index error from the indicated line, which clearly suggest column 1 doesn't exist, however if i run the same query in another tool, something like the following is returned:
    Rows Affected
    1
The query is being received by the database as the row ends up in the table intact, so I am clearly missing something about how to access the resultset correctly.
I am guessing that I am either misusing/misunderstanding the autocommit option or that the resultset is different to what I am expecting...
Can someone please shed a little light?
    Many thanks!
    George

Ok, I've done a little more digging, and i've come to the conclusion that an INSERT query doesn't return a resultset (or returns an empty one)
Could someone with a little more knowledge confirm this as I've had little luck finding an explicit yes or no from the web!
    Many Thanks in advance...

  • Invalid Index Error

    Hi,
We are getting Invalid Index error pop up when we try to view the dimension member of certain dimensions.
Pease help us in sorting out the issue.
    Regards,
    Raman

    Hello,
Within Business Warehouse use transaction UJFS, select your application set, select the "adminapp" folder. Select the excel file of your dimension where you have the problem. Delete it.
Go to BPC Admin, re-open the dimension membersheet. This should work now. Reprocess the dimension (this replaces the excel file of your dimension in UJFS).
Had the same problem, the above action helped me out.
