TimeMachine & SnowLeopard back up issue

If I do not set the energy saver to never go to sleep and if I do not shut down all apps and just step away from the MacBookPro Time Machine DOES NOT RUN
Just now it was set to backup at 6:07 PM EDT, I decided at 6:06 to check for an email response it wasn't there so I shut down Mail. The Time Machine clock when I looked was not set to back up at 7:07 PM .. it had not run. This happens every time .. every single time ... WHY? It worked fine PRE SnowLeopard, you could leave it plugged in backing up all the time ... now its not working.
SnowLeopard is fondly ref'd here in my house as SoggyCat
OH and restoring a prior to SnowLeopard Time Machine back up in Mail IMPOSSIBLE so thanks for that

Daryl Edelstein wrote:
Exactly. It says it will back up at 7 and it doesn't IF anything is in use or its asleep
Pref pane says next back up at 8 (or whatever the hour is)
No failure message. Nothing happens. Given time passes and the it updates the time and read 'next updated at 9 (or whatever the upcoming hour is)
It doesn't say anything it just doesn't work until I do not use anything and its not asleep.
Very odd (but no, it's not going to back up while asleep). Have you ever edited any of TM's plist files, or used a 3rd-party scheduling app such as +Time Machine Editor?+
Note the time a scheduled backup should start, but doesn't, then use the Console app (in your Applications/Utilities folder) to see the log messages.
When it starts, click +Show Log List+ in the toolbar, then navigate in the sidebar that opens up to your system.log and select it. Navigate to the time you noted above, then see what follows that might indicate some sort of error (many of the messages there are info for developers, etc.). If in doubt post (a reasonable amount of) the log here.
Also post the details of your setup.

Hello i am using TimeMachine to back-up entire Mac image (data + system) on an usb-local drive. I would like (on top of it) add a specific plan to back up some files on a remote network drive. Does TimeMachine support multiple back-up plans ? How ?

Time Machine is capable of backing up to multiple locations, and can be used to back up to both a local hard drive and a networked drive (provided that that drive is in or connected to a Time Capsule or another Mac that is sharing it over the network). The catch, though, is that you can't specify different things to back up to different destinations. Whatever you exclude from Time Machine backups is excluded from ALL backups, and whatever is included is included on all.
So, get a large enough drive that you can back up everything you want in all locations, or use something else for maintaining the network backup.

  • Back up issue for MBP stuck on grey screen

Recently my MBP went down with the grey screen of death. I've tried all the steps recommended in Apple's support document up until archive and install and archive and erase. Before I try the final two steps I was hoping someone could advise me about a back-up issue, and how to restore if a new hard drive is needed.
I have been backing-up to an external hard-drive (western digital my book 1TB) quite regularly. My last back-up was only a couple of weeks before the grey screen problem and since then I'd uploaded some photos and messed around on a project in imovie. I can access the hard drive in target mode and have transferred the photos to an imac ( as well as a couple of other files that had been changed) and wondered what my options were from this point.
If I end up having to install and erase, will it be simple to restore all my files from the last time machine back-up or do I need to clone my HD with Carbon Copy Cloner? I've read that I would need to format my external hard-drive and partition it before cloning the MBP hard-drive, which would erase all my old time machine back-ups since it is not partitioned.
I'm quite confused as to how to proceed best and would really appreciate some input from more technical minded people than myself.
    Thanks in advance.

I've tried all the available options, including archive and install and then erase and install, however, when I tried to erase got the following message:
'volume erase failed: could not unmount disk'
I have tried unmounting in disk utility to no avail. Does anybody have any suggestions or should I visit the apple store ( I have no protection plan)?
Is the hard drive shot, even though I was able to access it in target mode to drag and drop my user folders on to an external hd?

  • How can I use my TimeMachine to back up the external hard drive

How can I use my TimeMachine to back up the external hard drive that is attached to my TimeMachine? I have the external drive attached to my TimeMachine via the USB port and want my TimeMachine to back up the files on the external drive, as it does for the files on my computer. How do I do that?

  • IPhone 5 (iOS 6.1.4) back up issue

This started of late; every time I try to back up I get the message "iTunes could not back up the iPhone "... iPhone" because the iPhone disconnected" while it's still connected via Lightning. It goes through suncing just fine, but does not back up.
    Your input is appreciated!
    Thanks.

I would say that the servers are busy, overloaded and it is effecting your information. This can happen time to time, especially with such a popular network. I really don't think it's an iPhone issue, I think it's something going on with Twitter, definitely since you also tried from Safari and it didn't work from there. Good luck!

  • How can I get back old issues from my TIME app?

Hi, I hope someone can help me.  I've been trying to get help for a month now.  I had purchased several issues from TIME app but when I just got my ipad 2, I couldn't get the issues back.  I used the same ID and password.  I decided to try buying a new issue and when I did, I had an email from itunes warning me that it was not my usual ID.  I am very confused.  I wrote to TIME and they say I should contact itunes.  I have spent hours trying to contact itunes for help.  They seem uncontactable.  Can someone please tell me if I can somehow get my old issues back?

If they were not backed up or part of photostream, then no, you cannot.

  • SSD/HDD Time Machine Back Up Issue

I am having an issue with my 2010 13" MacBook Pro.
A few months ago I removed the optical drive, replaced it with the existing HDD, and then replaced the HDD with an SSD.
The SSD runs my OS (Mountain Lion 10.8.4) and Applications, while the HDD is where I store my Home Folder.
I did a Time Machine Back Up in March using a SeaGate external hard drive, with no issues.
Last week I updated the Time Machine Back Up using the same external hard drive, but this time something has gone wrong.
I am unable to move files within my system without Finder prompting me for a password.
I am unable to write to any external USB as I do not have 'permission to perform some actions'.
I am unable to connect to external servers via VPNs.
Finder does not open a new window when slected, I am forced to press 'Comman+N' every time.
    Numerous other issues.
I have read that it's an issue to do with ACL's, but since my Home Folder is not on my Startup Disk, there is no way for me to do this.
I am the only account on the computer, and both drives have 'Read & Write' permissions.
Does anyone know how to fix this issue?
Please feel free to ask for more details.
    Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook 2> /dev/null; } | open -f -a TextEdit
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}' | open -f -a TextEdit
    Step 4
    ls -1A /e*/{la,mach}* {,/}L*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -f -a TextEdit
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of every login item' | open -f -a TextEdit
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Time Machine back up issue

    Heya Guys!
Not sure this is in the right place so please move it if needed.
Ok, so I have an external hard drive, and I am trying to back up my mac through Time Machine. My issue is that it gets to a certain point where it will say 'The backup was not performed because an error ocurred while copying files to the backup disc. The problem may be temporary. Try again later to back up. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk'.
I repair the disc, and I thought I'd figured it out it, but now every single time it tells me to repair the disc. I have bought a brand new hard drive to do this with and it had the same thing.
Also it will get to saying that it has only 148 mb to go, will do it really quick then will go on to back up more data that wasn't there before in the bar, and then will say as above about disc repair.
I have no idea if it is actually backing up, as when I look into my hard drive, the .(file format) is .inprogress and the time machine sign always ends up saying back up failed.
I haven't a clue how to resolve this, so any help would be wonderful. Even if someone could just reassure me that yes it has backed up properly, that would be brilliant.
The hard drive I am using for this is a Seagate GoFlex 500GB and I did buy a Seagate External 1TB that I partitioned so I could use it on a Mac to use it with originally, but reverted back to my GoFlex.
    Thanks,
    Simon

I've just run Carbon Copy Cloner to back it up too and that has revealed where the problems are. Most of these I already have on my External Hard Drive safe but not the others, and since it is my first ever back up I don't want to delete something off my Hard Drive that I can't get back on it somehow. The problem areas are below:
    ATIRadeonX2000GLDriver (located in system/library/extensions/atiradeonx2000gldriver.bundle/contents/macos)
Media Toolbox (located in system/library/privateframeworks/avfoundationcf.framework/support/mediatoolbox/ framework/versions/A/mediatoolbox)
    Core AUC (located in system/library/privateframeworks/coreauc.framework/versions/A/coreauc)
I was also told that one of my files needs to be repaired as it failed to open, but I have no idea how to do it. It is located here: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Install.framework/Versions/A/Resources/runner
I'm guessing these are what is causing my issues, but I'm not exactly computer savvy when it comes to these sorts of things, so I don't know whether deleting them is a good idea, especially when I'm not sure if they are on a disc somewhere or not.
Thanks for the help so far guys! :-)

  • Back order issue

    Dear All,
Pls help me to resolve an issue with Back Order Processing (TCode V_RA). I m getting an error when i click Backorder for a Sales Doc:  Check the settings for checking group 02 and checking rule
    Thank you!

    Hi,
Please go through this once.......and check according to this...
Backorder processing is a functionality in SAP where you can change the committments and over-ride the blockage of stocks
marked against sales documents/deliveries. For e.g. you receive an order from a very important customer for material "A" but
the entire quantity of A is committed to another customer "B" via earlier sales orders and this is where BACKORDER processing helps you to change the committment and shift stock due for B to A. This is the benefit of this funtionality.
OMIH - Checking rule for updating backorders
OPJL   - Define new checking rule
OPJJ   - Define scope of check
    V_RA - Backorder Processing
    Data selection:-
    Sold-to-party             Customer code            Mandatory
    Sales Organization                                         Mandatory
    Distribution Channel                                       Mandatory
    Division                                                         Mandatory
    Changed confirmed quantity :-
Tick the material you want to changed and click the Backorder button
Confirmed quantity that still can be changed are highlighted.
    V.15 - Backorder List
    Sales Organization                                         Mandatory
    Distribution Channel                                       Mandatory
    Division                                                         Mandatory
I Hope it mightbe solve your problem...
    Regards,
    Reddy.

  • Latest Leopard and LR 1.3.1 back-up issue. Thoughts please.

    Hi All,
Running the latest Leopard and LR 1.3.1.
Transition to 1.3.1 went smoothly (or so it seams) But backing-up seems to be an issue.
Upon opening LR and trying to back-up, I get a dialog box that states "Lightroom is unable to back-up catalog, do you wish to continue?". If I continue, it does open up fine and appears to be fully operational. I have tried the 'Optimizing Library', but still behaves the same.
FYI, this on a new MacBook Pro Intel machine, and the file was originally created on a Power PC G4 machine. If that should make a difference, not sure.
Thanks in advance, for any suggestions.
    Sol

Try the following with Lightroom off, select the folder enclosing your catalog file, hit apple-I, disclose the sharing/permissions tab, hit the little padlock right bottom, make sure the permissions for your account are set to read&write. Then click on the little popup on the bottom (might look grey but it is still active) that has a little gear and a triangle and do "apply to enclosed items". On Tiger it is just a click box I think but it works the same. Now run Lightroom and see if this solves the problem

yes. Time machine will back up all directly attached drives provided they are formatted Mac Os extended.

that's exactly what Time machine does.

  • TimeMachine stopped backing-up.

Hello I need to see if anyone here can help me.
I have an external 1T hard drive in a firewire case which is my TimeMachine. I've been using TimeMachine since it came out without a problems on any number of external drives including this one for the last few months.
Since I updated my MacBook Pro 17" 2008, to 10.6.4 update combo, TimeMachine seems to have stopped working. I DO NOT get an error message. It's just that when I start the back-up it runs for only about 5 seconds and stops. Nothing changes, no new files are backed up.
I have trouble shot it to this: I started in Safe Mode and then reboot and TimeMachine then seemed to work for a little longer, but when I checked new files where not written to the TimeMachine. I have repaired Permissions on my computer twice. and Checked it with the Disk utility for drive problems. Nothing seems to be wrong.
I also ran Disk utility on the TimeMachine. Everything checked out. I have no idea but I'm leary of depending on TimeMachine now.
I also clone my drive using SuperDuper so I have another backup.
However I want to have this working. I looked on the internet thinking I would find a solution but so far nothing.

Why? Do backups fail? If so, with what message(s)? See #C2 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it. If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup (especially the destination for the backups), what you've done, and the results.
I have data on the disk outside of the TimeMachine backup that I cannot erase; otherwise, I'd just reformat the thing.
Not a good idea. When/if you can, you'll be much better off partitioning the drive, so TM has it's own, exclusive space. See #3 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Whenever TimeMachine runs, my system becomes very unstable - programs stop working, etc. Stopping the TimeMachine via the menu does not work; inevitably I have to reboot.
    See #D6 in Troubleshooting.
My question is how can I successfully reset the TimeMachine without destroying the files outside of the backupdb? I read that the directory structure has an ACL on it, which would require me to use other commands to release them. I don't care about the old TimeMachine backup on there now, I am content to start that over.
Have you tried to repair the backups? See #A5 in Troubleshooting.
If the backups can't be repaired, you have two unfortunate choices:
Copy the "other" data somewhere temporarily, erase and reformat the drive (preferably into two partitions) per #5 in the FAQ, then copy the "other" data back.
Delete the Backups.backupdb folder and empty the trash. That will take a very long time, and you may have permissions/locked file problems.
If I follow the directions instruct to delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist and reboot - will that allow me to remove the old backup?
    No.

  • HT4946 Has anyone solved the locked back-up issue?

Like many other users, when I try to restore my iPhone back-up, I am getting the message "The password you entered to unlock your iPhone backup was incorrect. Please try again." even though I definitely did not choose for my back-up to be encrypted. I have tried pretty much every password I've used in my life. There is no caps issue. There is no Apple store in the city I am in, so I cannot go to the Genius Bar. All the discussion I'm finding here and on google seems to be ancient, but this just happened to me today.
    Can anyone help?

So why won't my password work?
    A quote from another thread:
