TimeMachine stopped backing-up.

Hello I need to see if anyone here can help me.
I have an external 1T hard drive in a firewire case which is my TimeMachine. I've been using TimeMachine since it came out without a problems on any number of external drives including this one for the last few months.
Since I updated my MacBook Pro 17" 2008, to 10.6.4 update combo, TimeMachine seems to have stopped working. I DO NOT get an error message. It's just that when I start the back-up it runs for only about 5 seconds and stops. Nothing changes, no new files are backed up.
I have trouble shot it to this: I started in Safe Mode and then reboot and TimeMachine then seemed to work for a little longer, but when I checked new files where not written to the TimeMachine. I have repaired Permissions on my computer twice. and Checked it with the Disk utility for drive problems. Nothing seems to be wrong.
I also ran Disk utility on the TimeMachine. Everything checked out. I have no idea but I'm leary of depending on TimeMachine now.
I also clone my drive using SuperDuper so I have another backup.
However I want to have this working. I looked on the internet thinking I would find a solution but so far nothing.

Why? Do backups fail? If so, with what message(s)? See #C2 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum). It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it. If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup (especially the destination for the backups), what you've done, and the results.
I have data on the disk outside of the TimeMachine backup that I cannot erase; otherwise, I'd just reformat the thing.
Not a good idea. When/if you can, you'll be much better off partitioning the drive, so TM has it's own, exclusive space. See #3 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
Whenever TimeMachine runs, my system becomes very unstable - programs stop working, etc. Stopping the TimeMachine via the menu does not work; inevitably I have to reboot.
See #D6 in Troubleshooting.
My question is how can I successfully reset the TimeMachine without destroying the files outside of the backupdb? I read that the directory structure has an ACL on it, which would require me to use other commands to release them. I don't care about the old TimeMachine backup on there now, I am content to start that over.
Have you tried to repair the backups? See #A5 in Troubleshooting.
If the backups can't be repaired, you have two unfortunate choices:
Copy the "other" data somewhere temporarily, erase and reformat the drive (preferably into two partitions) per #5 in the FAQ, then copy the "other" data back.
Delete the Backups.backupdb folder and empty the trash. That will take a very long time, and you may have permissions/locked file problems.
If I follow the directions instruct to delete the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist and reboot - will that allow me to remove the old backup?
No.

    I tried:
    - changing the name of Tc
    - deleting totally the Tc and changing its name

    - repair permissions on my mac....
All that I read didn't help.
    Anymore idea?

  • Time Machine stopped backing up iMac

My Time Machine has stopped backing up my iMac. It is a 2Tb TM with 693GB still available and has been working fine since I got it out of the box in August 2012.
Watching the process a few times it seemed to get stuck on calculating changes. Investigating this I then followed instructions to delete com.apple.TimeMachine.plist from the root library, restart the Time Machine and iMac, then reconnect the Time Machine to the iMac, at which point there is a 120 second countdown and the backup starts.
No luck. Still calculating changes. I let the process just run for days and days without altering anything on my iMac. No backups taken.
I followed instructions to verify disk and it said that there was descrepancy. So I then followed instructions to boot on MAC OS X installer disk a verify and repair hard disk. Result was that after repair it said everything looks OK.
Again retried the reboot and iMac/Time Machine again several times, gets through scanning and then preparing items but never actually backs up.
    Downloaded the widget and it says that UUIDs don't match and goes into an indexing routine;
Waiting for Index to be ready (101)
for quite some some the says
    Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:must scan subdirs|new event db|
I leave the process to run but never seems to actually backup. I get an error
Error: Flushing index to disk returned an error: 0
I then leave it to run on its own schedule for several days but still not backup complete.
Time Machine says last backup was 28th May 2014.
I should add that the same Time Machine is regularly backing up my Macbook Air as normal without the same issues. My iMac is OSX 10.6.8.
How can I get Time Machine to start backing up my iMac again?

    Deleting the sparsebundle worked. Eventually.
Much like other posts I had to connect to Time Capsule from a Windows machine to delete the sparsebundle. Didn't seem to want to from my iMac!!!
Took a day to delete the sparsebundle and another half day (over ethernet cable) to do the backup but since then backups performing properly.
    Thank you.

  • WD Passport for Mac stopped backing up Time Machine - can anyone help?

So I have a mid 2012 macbook pro without the new mavericks thing on it, and a wd passport for mac 2tb thats 6 months old.  The passport has worked fine until suddenly it has stopped backing up time machine.  Everytime i plug it in and start the back up it gets through 200mb max before stopping and showing this message - TimeMachine couldn't complete the backup to My Passport for Mac An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk.
The disk utility doesnt appear to find anything wrong with it at all.  Has anybody else had this problem? Or know how it can be fixed?

    I suggest you start with:
See User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.
See also, A whole lot about Time Machine
    Mac 101- Time Machine
And, select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine." There should be numerous help articles including how to restore files from a TM backup.

Hello i am using TimeMachine to back-up entire Mac image (data + system) on an usb-local drive. I would like (on top of it) add a specific plan to back up some files on a remote network drive. Does TimeMachine support multiple back-up plans ? How ?

Time Machine is capable of backing up to multiple locations, and can be used to back up to both a local hard drive and a networked drive (provided that that drive is in or connected to a Time Capsule or another Mac that is sharing it over the network). The catch, though, is that you can't specify different things to back up to different destinations. Whatever you exclude from Time Machine backups is excluded from ALL backups, and whatever is included is included on all.
So, get a large enough drive that you can back up everything you want in all locations, or use something else for maintaining the network backup.

My Time Capsule has stopped backing up.
I have an Apple Time Capsule which backs up by wireless. For the last 3 days it has not backed up. I get this message:
"The backup was not performed because an error occurred while copying files to the backup disk."
I have gone into Mac Help and followed this down to stage 4:
under shared it lists my time capsule and my husband's iMac - both use the time machine but we have switched his off temporarily.  Clicking on my Time capsule I get "Connected" and "Sharepoint" - I didn't have to enter connect or password
I don't understand stage 5: how and where do I select the disk or volume that contains Time Machine backups ?  How do I know which it is? My disk utility lists 160.04 TOSHIBA MK... with sub-heading Macintosh HD.  It also lists (with a "CD" icon) HL-DT-ST DVDRW GS22N
Under stage 6, how and where do I Locate your backup ? I try dragging my Time capsule from Finder to the Disk Utility side panel but it won't go.  What is my computer's name?
Please someone help!  I'm completely stumped.
    Thanks,
    Maggie
    Mac Help says:
If you back up to a Time Capsule or network disk:
Open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences, and slide the switch to Off.
    Open Time Machine preferences
Open Disk Utility, which is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.
    Open Disk Utility
Make sure the Time Capsule or network disk is turned on and available.
Open a Finder window, select your Time Capsule or network disk in the Shared section of the sidebar, and click Connect. If necessary, enter your user name and password.
On the Time Capsule or network disk, select the disk or volume that contains Time Machine backups. Depending on how your Time Capsule is set up, there may be one or more disks or volumes.
Locate your backup, and drag it to the Disk Utility sidebar. You can identify your backup by looking for your computer’s name in the backup’s filename.

  • Time machine has stopped backing up to my Western Digital Network Drive

I have a WD 1TB World Edition drive which pretty much worked plug 'n' play when I bought it in early Jan backing up with with Time Machine instead of the bundled software. I've had a few troubles backing up, but largely due to router problems. Time machine has worked great with the drive, as promised.
Until a few days ago, when it stopped backing up altogether. The usual backup icon stopped appearing on the desktop and it came up with error message saying the backup file cannot mount or something like that. Strangely, the shared folders on the drive still show up and I can access all the mp3 files, etc I have loaded up. So, I checked the router, cabling to the drive, rebooted the drive, resetted the drive and checked the settings using MyBookWorld. This stopped the error message showing when I tried to backup and the backup icon now shows on the desktop again. But it won't backup !!! It just stalls and in Time Machine says its configuring without doing anything. I have tried hooking up to the drive directly, still no joy.
I'm now at the end of my tether. Does anyone have any ideas? I have asked WD support and they were next to useless. Thanks !

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Time Machine does not back up reliably, if at all, to most network drives, except Time Capsules or a shared drive on another Mac running Leopard or Snow Leopard on the same local network.
Here's the criteria they must meet: Disks that can be used with Time Machine. And be careful here: just because some 3rd-party hardware claims to support Time Machine doesn't necessarily mean that Apple supports it, or that it will work in all circumstances.
We've seen a number of problems reported with that drive. Have you downloaded the firmware update that's supposed to make it work?
with error message saying the backup file cannot mount or something like that.
    The exact message might help.
    Time Machine says its configuring
Is the word "configuring" or is it "Calculating changes"? "Configuring" sounds more like a message from WD, or perhaps your router, than one coming from Time Machine.
Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages for that run here.
You might also try to Repair the backups. I don't know exactly how you'd get to them on a NAS, but try the procedure for a Time Capsule in #A5 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • Time machine has stopped backing up to time capsule. message is that sparse bundle is in use

Time machine suddenly stopped backing up to time capsule returning this message:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/xxnymacbooknamexx MacBook.sparsebundle” is already in use.

Complex procedure that will almost always solve this bug:
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
    Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try a backup again.

  • HT4847 I need to free up space in my iCloud - most of it is used by photos - if I stop backing up my camera roll will it send the photos to my photo stream?? I already backup all photos on photo stream on my macbook??

so if I stop backing up my camera roll and delete the ones stored on icloud - will it still send all new photos taken to my photostream?? I already save the photos on my macbook.
    thanks sheri

Yes, Photo Streams work independent of the iOS Backup.
But a better way to manage your photos would be best. Use Camera Roll for new photos only like we used to do with the old film cameras. Once your Photos are organized into iPhoto on your Mac sync them back to the iPhone through iTunes. The photos in the Photo Library on the iPhone are not included with the iOS Backup since they should be already backed up in the computer's backups.

  • The time machine stopped backing up, the green light is on but it says it can't find the disc

The time machine was working perfectly but all of a sudden it stopped backing up.  The green light on the time machine is on and it seems to be functioning correctly (I can access past backups).  It is connected using wi fi.  The message says that the back up disc is not available.  My printer and the internet are also connected wirelessly and they are working OK.

I had the same problem a couple of days ago.
You'll have to Repair disk from Disk Utility on your T/M. But do this over Ethernet not Wifi. Then you 'll have to repair permissions. Once these steps are completed you should restart your Mac.

  • HT201250 my time machine has stopped backing up on time capsule. It is plugged into my network

My time machine is set to back up my mac using time capsule.. It has stopped backing up. When I check the icon, says "skip this back up". Before that it said it could not back up. Not sure what changed.
Said it has not backed up in a month. I cannot access anything to tell me what is going on. Please advise.

says last back up was Dec 5. Ugh.

  • My Time machine has stopped backing up saying there are some read only files.

My Time machine has stopped backing up and says that ther are some read only files preventing this. What steps do I need to take to fix it?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Post the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

Time Capsule error 22 - My time capsule was working fine and didn't notice anything wrong with it until it stopped backing up about two weeks ago. I never changed anything like computer names or the Airport settings. All I get is the following:
The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Linda's Computer 1.sparsebundle" could not be created (error 22).

If the light will not turn on the TC is dead. No matter that the hard disk is running.. it should only run at start up or when it is accessed not constantly.. that means the board in the TC has failed. Apple do not repair them.. They will replace it under warranty or applecare.
If you have gone over the 12month warranty it will still be covered if you have applecare on any computer or an Apple TV. In fact the cost of the apple TV plus apple care is still cheaper than buying a new TC.. so it is a route some people are taking.. certainly depends.. in some places like Europe or Australia now, there is a recognition that statutory warranty must be longer on a product that is premium to the market. 12months is not good enough. Apple will sometimes listen.
They might be fixable but I do not know how.

It don't workie!! is rather hard to troubleshoot from.
Try rebooting the networking.. restart in correct order.. modem.. router/TC.. clients. 2min gap.
That now fixes 90% of issues with Mountain Lion and TC connectivity.
