TimeMachine stuck at 140kb of 80GB?

Hey,
my TimeMachine does not work anymore. This problem occurs on a late 2013 iMac, "fullyequipped", and my TimeMachine with 2TB of storage.
I've already verified the disk as mentioned in a couple of other threads around the internet, but this did not solve my problem.
The widget "TimeMachine Buddy" shows me the following log:
Property list invalid for format: 200 (property lists cannot contain NULL)

I've canceled the backup after ~12 hours.
What am I missing here?

Reboot and try again.

  • Timemachine stuck preparing in 10.5.2

I had been doing backups using Timemachine just fine before the update to 10.5.2. I had tried to repartition my external drive to limit the amount of space time machine would take up. Trying it on 10.5.1 didn't work, gave an error "no space left on device", even though there's 90 gig free. I then updated to 10.5.2. I get the same error. I tried splitting the free space, this time I got a kernel panic. Argh!
I had to use disk util to repair the external drive. It says everything is ok now.
I've never run Timemachine with 10.5.2. Now when I try, it gets stuck and says "Preparing". Forever. backupd stops doing anything.
    In the console I get
    2/12/08 12:23:05 PM /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[295] Waiting for index to be ready (915 > 0)
I check with spotlight, "mdutil -as". It says indexing it turned off for my external drive, but on for the time machine backup directory. I can't turn it on for the drive overall. When I try to turn it on, it comes back and says its off.
Any ideas whats wrong or how to get around it? I don't know if Timemachine just isn't working in 10.5.2 anymore or if the partition is somehow messed up.
    Ideas?

i used the /.metadataneverindex trick to disable spotlight on my time machine drive.
removed that file, reindexed the drive, time machine picked up and backupd started backing up.
can someone file a bug? i don’t have a rdar account.
(i added the time machine drive to my spotlight privacy preferences so it wouldn’t be indexed. probably not necessary for the fix to work.)

  • Migration assistant from TimeMachine stuck on "calculating"

    Hi
I Have just done a clean install of Mountain Lion on my 2011 iMac and am now trying to restore user info (I.e. files) from a TimeMachine back-up using migration assistant.
Migration Assistant has spent several hours, apparently stuck, on "calculating" for the size to migrate for the "Users" component.  If I click continue, nothing gets migrated. Have restarted the process, and yet again it has been more than 3 hours and still it appears to be "calculating".
    My questions:
    - is this normal?
    - if so, how long should I wait before giving up?
I have about 240Gb of music and photos on here that I'm hoping to restore.
    Thanks for any tips!

    Hi ndt,
That's what happened to me too. Time Machine keeps calculating file sizes when I tried to restore (using migration assistant), after a clean installation of Moutain Lion.
Yes I already did what Andy did to solve his problem, which is create a new admin and restore from that new account. This is required because Migration Assistant wont restore (overwrite) to an account with same username. Somehow, it gives me an infinite loop of calculating file sizes.
My solution was re-installing (clean) Mountain Lion. During the installation, use the Migration Assistant that comes with the installation set up program. Do not skip that process. For some reasons, it can calculate the file sizes and restore successfully.
    Hope that is clear.
    Thanks.

  • 80GB iPod Classic stuck in recovery mode, tried EVERYTHING

Hello, i'm Michael, and i need some help right now :c
i just got an iPod Classic with 80GB of HDD, just a gift, but it had some "issues" (the screen showed a dock connector and it reads "Use iTunes to Restore"), i had an iPod Touch 4G, and i had that restored several times, so i knew the trick.
Okay i came from my grandmother's house and plugged my new fancy iPod! (it came with no USB cable so i bought a cheap one) but when i plugged the iPod had not enough power to remain connected, so i though (maybe the usb cable is not powerfull enough to mantain the charge cicle, it's a 2$ one, so it's big deal) plugged my iPod to my speakers on the Dock station, and leave it there for the entire night
The next morning i plugged my super charged iPod to my Windows 7 PC, and it got detected YAAY!, iTunes asked me to download the software to restore, so i let it do just that, waited for the 56mb ipsw file to download, and after that the restore process begun. At 57 seconds of the process (i timed it) the PC turned OFF (not big deal, my processor is not the best processor ever, and my PC usually turns off after a small overdrive)
Well, the iPod restarted and it was at the "Use iTunes to Restore" screen again. So i tought (Well, let's try my sis laptop) connected my iPod to the Windows 8 Laptop from my sister, and the iTunes download (iTunes + iPod ipsw) took a lot of time to me.. But when it comes to the Restore Process, after the same amount of time, i got the "1439" error, and after looking foward throught a lot of web pages, i came out with the "Windows 8 is the one of the problem :L" so i plugged my iPod out and leave it charging in my speakers, at the next day, i was in my Grandmother's house again..
So i came out with my uncle and told him to lend me his Lap, a Windows 7 64X Core i5 Extreme with VT (super machine i loved it *¬*) and plugged my iPod in, i tried to Restore with his iTunes version (11 one) and guess what? 1439 error! it looked like the USB cable was the problem one, but i didn't gave up, and installed Virtual Box with Widnwos XP (i rode some guy had it working with a restaration with XP, and makes sense, since Windows 7/8 can't format large drives with FAT32, and XP sure can) so i plugged my iPod and installed Guest additions and the Expansion pack (for USB 2.0 support) installed the last iTunes version and tried to restore, and guess what? 1434!
So, i tried something different, i tried to format the iPod with Windows Explorer, and guess what? it worked! NTSF system was loaded ad working, i dragged some 134mb files to it, and they could be readen every time i wanted. But there's a problem, iPod software is not NTSF but FAT32, so i downloaded EaseUS partition manager and formated it to Fat32, 128kb cluster size, and unplugged it to plug the speakers again (YES, I TOOK THEM TO MY GRANDMOTHER'S) after the battery's top capacity was acomplished, i tried the restore form XP again, and after a few tries, i got a succefull restore!
The iTunes screen showed "your iPod is going to restart, please leave it connected, and it will be recognized after the reboot" (or something like that Cx) i was really happy i could get my iPod to work, but when the Apple logo appeared with the progress bar, it filled like 84%, and the screen became white, it showed the same "do not disconnect" regular screen, and iTunes told "iTunes has detect and iPod in Recovery Mode, please restore it to be used with iTunes"
So, i tried a LOT of methods from Apple Discussion, formating in Disk Mode, Restoring in Disk Mode, regular mode, DFU mode (only downloads a 1.4mb file and says "preparing the ipod" after 34 seconds and an uncomplete bar it closes ._.) restoring with XP, 7, 8, rebooting the iPod (select + menu, 6 secs) DFU mode (menu + select 12 secs) disk mode (play + select, 6 secs in apple icon) and a lot of hard work.. nothing worked.
So i tought.. (maybe the iPod's HDD is broken or something) opened Diagnostics and this are the results:
    Retracts :432
    Reallocs: 319
    Pending sectors: 0
    Poweron Hours: 560
    Start /Stop: 426
Temp status are not important right now, current 23, max 43c, min 15c
it's obviously an used iPod.  But the Reallocs count is not THAT big
Okay so i tried something different and asked my friend's iPad cable, this one connected pretty well with Windows 8 and it did restore with no problems at all. but there's one little small issue.. it didn't work either...
So, i'm here, out of ideas, i can imagine a restore with OS X will change my point of view in some way, but i can't do that right now...
i Must add that the HD is completely functional, i can add files to it right now, and use them in another PC, i can format it, partition it, and a lot of crazy things, so the HDD is not the problem one..
Please help me.. i have EVER SEEN a iPod's menu, other than my DSi iPod themed homebrew music player.. (wich looks fantastic)
Thank's in advance, i'm sorry for the lenght of my note, i have been thinking on it for a long time hehe c:

After hours of searching for a fix I may have found one on a Mac Forum. This worked for mine but I had to restore it from the last back up. I also gave me the option of restore to new condition (out of hte box) but Ichoose from the last backup that itunes made. It took about 4 hours to fully restore all my 24gb of material. BUT,Now it's working perfectly. For how long...who knows?
Here's the link to the page where I found the info. http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=447185
Below is the solution that worked for my 2nd gen 32 gig.

the ipod should power up, and if if is screwed up, will be in recovery mode... from there itunes will tell you that it finds your ipod in that mode, and needs to restore it.
just click restore, sit back and it should work again.
did you hack it at all?
if you did not hack it, and that doesnt work, call applecare and see what they say. maybe it is faulty?
still, from my experience with my friends ipod that i made 100% unusable, there is a way to restore even the most broken ipod as long as it has a battery charge.
i suspect a small portion of the memory is dedicated to keeping emergency boot files that allowe you to restore, no matter how bad things get."

  • TimeMachine is stuck at "preparing to backup"

Hello I am new to the communtiy
Anyway i have a lacie back up thing and when i try to backup (im running the newest osx. mavericks)  its stuck at preparing to backup.Last time i went to the apple store and they told me theres a problem with the lacie thing.I have avast installed but could that be the problem?
    pls help.

I recently installed Logic Studio & it took up 42GB of space on my HD. Obviously TC wanted to back this up when the next back up came round. But I worked out it would take something like 120 hours!! Before this i would have the 'Preparing back up' saga at least twice a week, taking 3 to 4 hours to complete each time. I thought this was an ideal moment to try something. So I unplugged TC from downstairs & took it upstairs, where my iMac is located & plugged it in via ethernet to do the back up. It was complete in 2 hours of so. Then i let it do 2 or 3 more via ethernet, then 2 of 3 wirelessly, still located next to the iMac, not in its normal position downstairs. When i connected it back up downstairs everything worked fine. In fact, its never worked better, back ups are quick & easy now & no connection dropouts.
I think TC defiantly needs lots of TLC, & mothering to work properly.
I hope you get chance to be able to try something like this, I know its not ideal with things being at work & you shouldn't have to babysit something to get it working, but it has worked well for me.
    Good luck.

  • 80gb Video iPod Stuck in Shuffle...

I have an issue where my iPod seems to be stuck in shuffle mode no matter what I do. I have set Shuffle to Off in the settings and whenever I go into an album or artist it still shuffles everything and if the album is less than a certain amount of songs it just goes back to album selection screen after scanning through.
Anyone else have any issues like this?
    Thanks.

Haven't tried to reset yet..as my main pc is at home and I am not...
But here is what I think is happening..if anyone knows this for a fact please let me know:
My iPod has the same settings for a playlist as in iTunes..so if in iTunes the playlist is set to shuffle...no matter what you set on the iPod it will shuffle that playlist.
Least that is what I can think of for my situation right now..as I have one playlist that is behaving properly...but others still shuffle...and just by selecting an album in Music causes shuffle too...so maybe they are related in some aspect with iTunes settings.

  • TS1382 5th Gen 80GB Classic is charged, but menu is stuck!

    5th Gen. Class 80GB Ipod.
My 5th Gen 80GB Classic ipod has not worked quite right in a while. I plugged into my JBL Soundstage, fully charged it, I toggle the top power/hold back and forth several times, all I see is the full menu, (music, photos, playlists, etc) but I can not scroll down using the wheel, or any other method!
I tried the toggle with HOLD thing, then pressing Center/Menu,and still nothing!
Since it shows the battery charge is full, then I'm thinking it's not the battery, but maybe the hard drive. I boght this new back in 2007, and once I took it to the geniuses at Apple store, ,they told me the HD was fried, like a computer crash, and for me to hand it over to them,. and for $185.00. they would give me a refurbish one. I was fuming!  After payoing almost $500.00 doallars for this and this happens?  I went home and called apple and talked to about five people until this nice supervisor actually helps me get this running again. Some genius!  And now after four years since this happened. now this.  I should just get a itouch with more bells and whistles, because this ipod might have numbered days.  How long should a 80GB Classic last?

Just wanted to give you guys an update: my iPod now works again fully, without having reformatted it, as Apple suggested.
I was reading some other posts around here, and decided to try something before going for the ultimate/decimating solution: redownloaded iTunes and reinstalled it. Install of checking for updates, I just went to Apple's site, and downloaded the whole thing. Plugged in my iPod, and now it all works! All the songs that wouldn't play before are now working just fine, as before.
Seems to me there's something funky on iTunes 7.5 for Windows or the upgrade process, which wasn't there in previous versions.
    Hope this helps!

Apple is very disappointing, they have no problem charging high prices but they dont give the support needed to the customers. the ipod is buggy and it had problems since i got it(yesterday)

You can ring them up but be aware that if you haven't got AppleCare and you've had your iPod for more than 90 days you'll be charged for technical support. You only receive one complimentary support incident, which must be used within the first 90 days of product ownership: Contact Apple Support

  • Ipod 80gb is stuck on apple screen and clicks. Continue to restart non stop

I have two ipods and both are having the same problem. One is a 2gb nano and the other is an 80gb 5th gen. Both will go to the apple load screen and sit there for a second or two and restart and never end this sequence for hours. The 80gb 5th gen will make clicking noises between restarts. Both batteries have been charged and I even replaced the battery in the 80 gb with a new one and still the same problem. I thought maybe the hard drive was to blame but the nano doesn't have one. I have no idea what it could me.
Here is a video I posted on you tube as well. Not the best quality but you get the idea.

  • Need help wit ipod 80gb classic stuck on red x icon

When i turn my IPOD on, the apple comes up, although it goes straight to an error screen wit a red X icon in a red circle. It says to go to www.apple.com/support/ipod. I did this and followed all directions it said trying to surf and find different ways to fix it. I have tried using the page that says to manually put it into disc mode, which is one part of directions to fixing the error red X, by toggling the hold button on and off. It says to keep it in hold mode and turn the IPOD back on, it will not come on though.I also tried turning the hold button off to try setting to dis mode that way, but no success. I tried setting on flat surface and using separate fingers, i was wondering if there is any other way to fix this. my warranty is in effect until December 23, 2008. I would rather have a quick way to fix it, if it is at all possible. Any help will be appreciated, thanks¿

  • 80GB stuck on Apple Logo

Hi my iPod is frozen on the Apple Logo.  I can reset by pushing the Menu and middle but immediately goes back to the Apple Logo.  When it is plugged in sync mode itunes does not detect it. I can't get it to reset or to sync.  After leaveing it for several days it tells me to charge battery.  I can plug it in and it shows charging then after period of time goes back to the Apple Logo and is frozen again.
    Shall wait for earliest reply...
    Regards,
    N.Chheda.

When you Reset (press menu and Center button for about 10 secs), and it does not go to Welcome screen, it could be a dying battery.
Can you try connecting it to a PC and pressing the Menu and Center button, if it cycle through the Welcome screen and open the Sync screen, then it is a dead battery.
If it gives you the fatal RED X, then your iPod harddisk maybe dead.
    Have a nice day.

  • 2007 80gb Ipod Classic stuck in 'reboot' loop, disk mode 'ok to disconnect'

Long story short. I'd love to revive my old Ipod classic as a way of storing all my music for my car, however the ipod won't go past the apple logo upon reboot and shows the message 'connect to your computer. Use iTunes to restore' then it goes blank again. If I enter disk mode the ipod shows 'ok to disconnect' and when connected to the computer the ipod isn't recognised at all. Today however after plugging into the computer a few times and wiggling it around a bit it just started to work. I then restored it and began to sync but when I went to play a song the ipod froze and I was forced to reboot... which put me back where I started.
    HELP!

Do the iPod Disk Diagnostic as posted earlier today by tt2, it wont fix your problem, but helps in troubleshooting.

  • 80GB Ipod Classic stuck in a reboot loop; restoring only delays the problem

    Hey there,
During the last week or two I have had to restore my iPod 3 times now, due to a condition where the ipod will boot up (showing the apple logo), reach the main menu screen, then after 5 or so seconds, it will reboot, repeating the process.
I restored the ipod by putting it into disk mode, then restoring it with itunes, but after a few days the problem occurs again.
The only causes I can think of would be upgrading to itunes 9, or ending the iTunesHelper process to allow me to use the device as a portable flash drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as it is beginning to become quite the annoyance.
