Timeout problems trying to update to iOS 8.1

iPhone 6 was updated to iOS 8.1 on the first day of release.  It took more than ten hours (!!) but it completed.
However I can't complete an update on iPad 3.  Five or six attempts in several days have all gone the same way:  the update starts, asks me to accept the legal stuff, and download begins.  An estimate of time required appears - I've seen estimates from 3 hours to 16 hours - but after 1-3 hours the update aborts, says the server has timed out.
I have reset and hard-reset (I think*) the device.  I've also tried a Restore through iTunes, same timeout error.  There is more than 15Gb of free space on the device.  Nothing wrong with internet service here... everything else including an experiment with downloading an 11Gb file across the internet has worked fine and as fast as expected.
Can I do anything to make this process complete?  Mine is a 64Gb WiFi + Cellular, Model A1430 / MD368C/A, already running iOS 8.02.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
* Instructions found online for hard-resetting the iPad with the Home and On/Off buttons have appeared to go through the steps but the device still contains all of my apps and data.  Is there a way to factory-reset the device and wipe it clean before trying to update it to 8.1?

Two more attempts since posting this.  One failed with a 9006 error, so Microsoft Security Essentials was turned off on the PC (never been a problem before).  The next one failed with another server timeout error.
All 7-8 failed attempts have been with the iPad wired to the iTunes on PC.  About 8-9 Apple devices have been updated this way for years.  Desperate to try anything, I unplugged the iPad and told it to use its wireless connection to update itself.  THE 8.1 UPDATE COMPLETED IN ABOUT 20 MINUTES!
I've spent HOURS on this!  iPad connected wirelessly to the exact same router and network that it has been plugged into during all previous attempts!  NOTHING on the PC was changed since previous successful updates (including iPhone 6 to 8.1 just a week ago).
The Apple is losing its shine.

I have tried restarting both my computer and my phone, but contine getting "The iPhone could not be restore. An unknow error occurred (3194)." PLease help! Thanks in advance

I am also getting the error 43 when the update tries to back the phone up. Im using the latest version of itunes. This is on an iphone4, I am in the UK.
I tried deleting all of the historical backups to see if a fresh backup folder helps. It did not.
Ive tried running iTunes in 'administrator' mode on my Windows 7 machine. This made no difference.
Ive tried putting the phone in airplane mode. No difference.
I tried getting it into restore mode just to see if it worked on a iphone4. However it did not seem to want to do it.
Im not not too sure about proceeding with this update as I done want to loose any of the apps I have. (or 3 my 3 stars in every angry birds level on all 3 versions of the game!!)

  • I have a 3gs. I tried to update the ios today. Now my phone is stuck in recovery mode and itunes is not recognizing. I also tried DFU mode, still nothing. I have uninstalled itunes and reinstalled. Help.

I have a 3gs, and I haven't updated it for a long time because I always have issues when I do. I tried to update the ios today, and it decided to update it to 6.1.3 instead of 7, I didn't think there would be a problem, so I clicked ok. When I came to check on my phone, itunes said there was an error with the update, and my phone was in recovery mode (plug-in sign on the screen). I looked up multiple things to try, I tried putting it in DFU mode, still itunes doesn't see it. The computer also doesn't list it under devices, however when it is plugged in the Apple Mobile Support USB Driver shows up in device manager. I have tried uninstalling itunes and reinstalling, still nothing. I just want to know if there is anything else I can try. Thanks.

No, it is my phone that I've had since 2009. I just hate updating it because every time I do something goes wrong. So I put it off as long as possible. I am getting a new iphone, but I read that to have your backup transfer to the new phone, it must be a backup from the current ios.

  • HT5622 Actually um trying to update new iOS 7 for my iphone 4 but when i press the button to install new software suddenly it appears why " iOs 7 failed verification because you are no longer connected to the internet " even my phone is already connected

hie there Actually um trying to update new iOS 7 for my iphone 4 but when i press the button to install new software suddenly it appears why " iOs 7 failed verification because you are no longer connected to the internet " even my phone is already connected to net

I tried powering down and re-starting the iPhone (as suggested at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275). This seems to have cleared the "...not connected to the Internet" problem, and iOS 6.1 is now in the process of downloading.
Thanks very much for your feedback.

  • TS3682 Trying to update my iOS 4 to iOS 6

I am trying to update my iOS 4 from my IPad 2 to a newer version of iOS . They have the worst instructions on how to upgrade to iOS 5. Usually Apple is really easy, but not with this. And, unlike my iPhone 5, you can't go to General settings. I have searched the App store and iTunes, but I keep getting nowhere!!

See the chart below to determine whether you can upgrade your device and what you can upgrade to. If you do not have a Software Update option present on your iDevice, then you are trying to upgrade to iOS 5 or higher. You will have to connect your device to your computer and open iTunes in order to upgrade.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Tried to update to ios 6 and the download got to 99% before error code 3194 displayed and I cannot reload any software now, please help

    Goto --
    My Computer --> C Drive--> Windows --> System32-->Drivers-->Etc--> Host File
-Cut (remove) this host file and past it on desktop.
-Now comeback to itunes - provided you have fresh itune installation after removing it COMPLETELY from your system (Ref- http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923?viewlocale=en_US).
-Plug in your iphone to  your windows via active USB port (no hub) and with good internet connection.
    - Repeat  the ios update process and avoid doing multitasking ( I was lil careful... :)).. And that worked for me ...updation took max 10 min's.
    - Once the ios updation process is done , follow the instructions and complete the ragistration process. restart your iphone and its on ios 6 EnJOY !
    - Put the HOST file back to its original  path.
If this resolves your problem , Like it :-)

  • SOLVED: Error -50 during backup if trying to update to iOS 5

    Hi there!
    Issue:
As I would update my iPhone and iPad 2, I got the following error, while iTunes was trying to save the backup:
"Beim Backup der Daten dieses iPhones / iPads ist ein Fehler aufgetreten (-50). Möchten Sie mit der Aktualisierung des iPhones / iPads fortfahren?"
    => no, you shouldn't ;-)
    Issue solved:
Since I couldn't find a solution for my problem while searching the Internet, I'd like to share the solution, which I could find myself. :-)
    Reason for the issue:
The point is, that I redirect the iTunes backup to an iSCSI drive on my NAS. This works usualy without any problem, exept during updating to iOS 5.
    Solution:
I temporarily replaced the link 'backup' in the MobileSync which redirects the backup to iSCSI network drive with a folder named 'backup' for iOS 5 installation:
      /Users/<USER>/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/backup
So the backup will be created local to the Mac instead to the iSCSI drive.
After installing iOS 5 I could replace the folder again with the link and all works perfect.
    Bug report to Apple:
This behavor should be corrected. It seams to be a bug in iOS 5 upgrade process in iTunes in my opinion.
Howsoever, it's easy to solve the issue, if you know the reason.
Maybe I can help someone with this hint.
    Sincerely

THANK YOU. Saved me a few hours, this did.
This is stil not fixed in the latest iTunes, MobileSync, or iOS 6. Whichever piece has the problem is still badly broken, and in this age of 64 GB flash drives in MacBook Air models, surely we're not the only two that have moved that monstrous folder out to an external drive....

The only available, signed, iOS, for your iPod, is iOS 7.1. That's why you can't install iOS 6.1.6.
