Timestep too small and Input Power Factor cannot be got

Hi All
I've just started using multisim 2001 to simulate Electronic Ballast circuits and am having trouble.
About Double-Stage Electronic Ballast circuit,it works well before using EMI circuit, but I get a "timestep too small" error message after using EMI circuit.
About Single-Stage Electronic Ballast circuit,it also works well before using Wattmeter,so I cannot get input Power Factor.Besides, I try to add EMI circuit, but noting works.
I attached my circuit to this email, could someone please give me some assistant? I would be really appreciated
Thanks

I have tried something, but I am still not sure I am getting accurate readings. What I did was to remove the bridge rectifiers and the AC Voltage source and replace them by a DC power source at the same voltage value. It seems to stablize the reading, but I am not sure how reliable it is or if that is what it should be. What I will do is post the two circuit for you and let you look at them. It takes a little bit for the reading to stabalize so just be patient.
Here they are:

There are other settings there ...they may not be to your liking but try them all anyways.

    Hi,
Is there any particular application's interface that is coming up small or is it happening with all the products?

  • I have a 22 inch monitor set at 150% but since I installed Firefox, the font is too small and the screen is too small. Cannot make font or screen larger. I can do Control++ each time I enter a page but don't want that to be my solution.

In control panel/display, I had my display set at 150% and at 1680 X 1050 resolution. This filled my 22 inch screen with the page content. Now that I have installed Firefox, the font is too small and the content is centered in the screen leaving about3" per side of blank space. I want to fill the screen and make everything larger. Haven't found a way to do that. Firefox tells me in my control panel/display window that by setting my display at 150%, "some items may not fit in your screen if you choose this setting while your display is set to this resolution. It worked fine with Explorer.

The Firefox Page Zoom feature does a domain by domain level of saving the users preferred zoom level settings, there is no default Page Zoom level setting in Firefox.

  • Timestep too small(mixing circuit)

    Hi,all!
    I have a mixing circuit(using AD734).When I tried to simulation,it shows that Error:
    |   Output from instrument analysis

When I do this elect Simulation >> Interactive Simulation Settings >> Under initial conditions select set to zero, there is no error then. However, there is still no graph showed in the oscilloscope.I don't if there is anything wrong with my correction.
    I have uesd multisim8.
I am a freshman so I don't know what the problem is.Maybe there is somthing wrong with my circuit.I hope someone can help me!
    Thank you very much!
    Here is the circuit.

I went back and look at your circuit again. There were a few other things I changed that I failed to memtion that could be of some help. I will outline them below:
    1) I placed grounds on your input sources (don't know if this was problematic, but Multisim likes its sources to have grounds)
    2) Removed the Digital/Virtual ground from the IC and replaced it with a normal ground. (this chip is analog and not digital, don't know if was causing problems or not). This would be on Pin 10.
These are the only circut changes I made and the rest was through the settings. One thing I noticed is that you have 1uF caps on the input sources. This would greatly attenuate your signal a 6 Mhz. Not sure if this was done intentionally or whether it was an error. In order fro your signal to pass without attentuation you would have to lower these capacitors to a value in pF range.
In my previous post I was concerned about a maximum frequency limit of Multisim, but you might want to look at the datasheet for this IC and check it out. The way I read it (and this may not be correct) it is ouput limited to 10Mhz. Therefore if you multiply your 6 Mhz inputs and divide by 2 you end up with 20 Mhz which is out of range for this IC. Look at this and let me know if I am reading this correctly.
This is all I know. I wish I could post this for you and let you try it. But our file formats are incompatible.

  • Timestep Too Small Error (12ax7 circuit)

Hi, I've just started using multisim 8 to simulate Vacuum Tube circuits and am having trouble. Everytime I build a preamp circuit using a 12ax7 or similar tube and hit "simulate"; I get an error "timestep too small.....". Then the simulation stops. I've tried changing the timestep options in transient analysis instruments options. If I change the maximum timestep to a higher value, the simulation starts but just keeps running and I get no results with the oscilloscope I have on the outputs of the preamp tube circuit. All other analog and digital simulations I've tried work perfectly without having to change any of the default values for the transient analysis instrument options. I cannot understand what the problem is. My computer is a AMD 64 bit 3.4 ghz with 512 megs of ram, 280 gig hard drive, etc. I'm not using 64 bit windows xp, I'm using 32 bit windows xp professional. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has had any luck simulating 12ax7 or similar circuits, please send me a reply or the saved file to see if that works. I've been looking for any tube preamp circuits to download for multisim but haven't been able to find any. Thanks!

I like to give an (general) answer to the common questions regarding "Time Step to small" and convergence problems in Multisim.
SPICE takes a text netlist describing the circuit elements (transistors, resistors, capacitors, etc.) and their connections, and translate this description into equations to be solved. The general equations produced are nonlinear differential algebraic equations which are solved using implicit integration methods, Newton's method and sparse matrix techniques.
To cut a long story short: If Multisim displays a "Time Step to small" or similar message, it only means that SPICE can't find a mathematical solution to the given circuit. Even if your circuit looks real, it is possible that through ideal models (e.g. don't take 'real' parasitic effects into account), ideal sources (e.g. high rise and fall time for a clock source) it doesn't behave like in reality. "Playing" around with your circuit (e.g. changing resistor values etc.) may or may not solve the problem. But as a rule of thumb, it is always recommended to match the components to their real counterparts.
A good approach to overcome convergence problems is to understand more about the SPICE Engine Options. They define what is rated as a "good" solution and what will become a "Time Step to small" or similar error. You can find the settings for the SPICE Options in the Analysis tab (part of setup for all analysis and the Interactive Simulation Settings for instruments).
Steps to solve "Time Step to small"
Change RELTOL to 0.01% (Relative Error Tolerance)
Change METHOD to "trapezodial" (Integration method)
Change ITL4 to 100 (Upper transient iteration limit)
Please consult Multisim's online help for further assistance on convergence problems and SPICE options.
A great online resource are the SPICE Simulation Fundamentals on ni.com.

  • Prints too small and doesn't do margins correctly

When printing any document, either form Microsoft Word or the internet, the font sizes come out too small and the margins do not match the settings. For example, I have my margins set to 1inch all the way around and yet the printer prints the paper margins at  **Top 1inch, left and right @ 1.3 inches, and the bottom at 2 inches. This is very annoying because it condenses everything and makes the font smaller.  I have already went into all of the settings both in Word and the Printer. Everything is set right, I am using letter paper 8.5 x 11, it is set up to match that paper, and I've double checked everything. And the paper is loaded in correctly. I seriously don't know what to do. I've even tried selecting "fit to paper" under the printer options and nothing has changed. I am really tired of this printer.
    Please help!

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.
Every printer I have ever had seems to revel in messing with us about margins - I had the 7520 printer for a year; in my personal opinion this printer is not better or worse in this regard than others.
I am not being sarcastic; far from it.  I am fully sympathetic.
There is always something going on -- IF it is the printer then it might be one of the following:
Printers have margin restrictions that can get in the way of the settings - and the results manifest themselves in odd ways depending on the document type (Word, PDF, html, some-other-type).
Software can have an effect -- Online Word, for example, may not be the same as Word-in-a-Box and a PDF file on your computer is never the same as a PDF file on the Internet.
If you think the printer is messing with you because the software is tweaked, then you can remove and then reinstall the printer software -- it does sometimes help IF the software is corrupted or out-of-date.
Install Full Feature Software – Printer
You can download files from the Internet and try printing them from your computer -- local files frequently print better from your computer than they do from the Internet.  This assumes you can trust the files to be downloaded onto your computer.  Scan any downloaded file with your best Security Software.
You can try setting Word document margins to Narrow.  This may work as long as you don't get into trouble with other printer margin restrictions of it if doesn't mess up your document.  Depends.
You can try using Print Preview to adjust the margins.
You can try -- when using Word - to adjust the Footer / Header to move the Page Numbers / Headers out of the way of whatever Printer margin restrictions exist.  For example, if the printer cannot print within .5 inches of the edge of the paper, make sure the page numbers have been moved away from the edge of the paper at least that far.
Our British friends know that A4 paper is not American "Letter" paper.  The difference can present challenges - Word offers an Options setting for this to keep the A4 bottom bits from chopping off.  This setting MIGHT do odd things to "Auto" select paper settings in some printers.
You can try using Printing Preferences / Properties to print borderless -- assuming your paper selection combination and printer supports this.
    For example:
Printing Preferences > Paper Quality > Advanced >
Under Printing Features >> Borderless Printing > Select from Drop Down Menu "Print Borderless"
Combine this with Print Preview / Margins
    The following might be helpful:
Manage Print Output with Print Preview

  • Timestep too small (chopper stabilized amplifier)

    Hi All
I am trying to design a chopper stabilized amplifier using Multisim 7.
My circuit works before the amplifer stage. Today, I added a modulator, and every time I simulate, I get a "timestep too small" error message.
I tried increase the end time in transient analysis setting, but nothing works
I attached my circuit to this email, could someone please give me some assistant? I would be really appreciated

    Hi Tien
What verion of multisim are you using? I am using Multisim7
I tried the steps in the knowledge based for fixing the timestep too
small problem, unfortunately, it still can't solve the problem
For circuit4, I need to modify my Voltage control voltage source in order to fix the problem.
Now, I add a demodulator to my circuit which is just the same circuit as the modulator. Unfortunatly, I am getting the same "time step too small" problem again
Is there any other way to resolve this problem? I am running out of idea
I attached my circuit with the message,  thanks in advance for your help

  • Simulation interrupts, error:timestep too small, trouble with node. Solution?

Evaluating Multisim, a simple half bridge inverter, using function generator to control IGBTs, scopes and current probes. Simulation starts and interrupts shortly. The error message is: Timestep too small, time=xxxx, timestep=yyyy, trouble with node zzzz.
Can anyone give me some idea please, what is going on here,  am I doung something wrong or this is software/model bug?
Simulation is unstable, even when it works, if I change the point where I sense the current or voltage, or component value, it fails.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    Hi Jordan,
Thanks for advise, but connecting the terminal to ground does not solve the problem. The problem is not in the circuit but in the software. You can see that the simulatiion worked for several periods, so the circuit is OK. Please tell me, what is the exact meaning of the error message, "timestep too small"? Why is the software working for one value of the component and not for another value? My interpretation is that when software encounters some values during calculations that it does not like for some reason, it gives this message without properly defining the problem so that the user can take practic action to rectify it. Are there any settings which I must define before starting the simulatioin, like sampling rate or anything that would eliminate "timestep too small" message?
I am evaluating the simulator software to make a decision whether it is practically useful for the company to purchase. If 8 out of 10 times the result of simulation is an incomprehensible error message instead of a waveform, then I have to assume that the software is not mature.
    Please advise.
    Best regards,
    Stepan.

Watching movies from iTunes and Netflix, the subtitles shows yellow, too small and into gray boxes! I'm having this kind of trouble with my iPad also.

    Solution found.
I am a Vodafone customer and installed the Vodafone app which asks you to turn off wifi connection on installation as it needs to communicate with their servers over 3G.
After restoring the iPad via iTunes this is the only app that I did nor re-install and seems to be too much of coincidence that while in full screen view watching films my wifi is switched off and 3G data connection is established 10 - 15 minutes into a fiilm and my data allowance gets eaten up!
I would also get push notifications from Vodafone saying "my daily data usage was almost used" with this app installed.
Have tested and on 3rd time watching sky go still wifi is on after 30 mins.
DO NOT INSTALL VODAFONE APP FROM THE APP STORE.

  • (Help):timestep too small error and how to do changes in the simulation

    HI ALL,
I have a constant current  source circuit. When i tried to simulate,  it gives me a message that time step too small.I changed in the simulation as the way in the forum, but the error still exit.
i saw the presentation on the SPICE simulation options in http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/tut/p/id/5418#toc4, and changed correlation parameter, but it's no help.
How to change the simulation options in the MULTISIM?
How do i can avoid some very generic error?

I found something else here that the convergence assistant never told me about when it went through its paces. It not only changed the method to Gear but it also changed Upper Transient Iteration Limit (ITL4) from 100 to 10000. So you have to change that. That is in the Transient Tab where you changed to the METHOD to Gear.
After finding this, you don't have to change the METHOD only ITL4 from 100 to 10,000. If the Convergence Assistant had notified me of this change at first then I would have told you that also, but it just told me that it switched the Method only. I came to question this only after loading simulation setting that I had saved previously that were already set to GEAR. It wouldn't simulate and the Assistant couldn't fix it. I then compared what it did the first time with my settings and the only difference was IT4 had been increased.
I am sorry if this caused any problems, but I blame the assitant for not giving me full info on changes made.
That setting just by itself has seemed to make things more stable on my end as far as the circut problems I desctibed in a previous post where sometimes circuits would simulate and sometime they wouldn't. I will continue trying this setting across all my circuits and see it this is what I have been looking for also.

  • I don't have a question so much as a comment for APPLE. I am a new iPhone 5s user and it has many things I like but It is too small and I can only talk on the phone and use the internet if i am in a position to use a wifi connection and that is not good

I am a new iPhone 5s user. I like many of the features it offers. I don't like that I cannot talk and use the internet (if I am away from WI-FI) and this phone is too small. I am actually thinking of returning it and going back to an Android. After all the hassle it took to get all my stuff working on this phone , it may be worth the switch. This phone needs to be able to multitask freely in this day and age. Also Safari is not the best search engine but I could work with it if I could talk and use it at the same time. I use my phone for business and this is a feature that is needed in my line of work.

I understand that the OP failed to do research. But then, I wasn't replying to the OP. I was replying to Chris. I have Verizon. I can talk and use data at the same time with my Droid Maxx. Therefore, the problem is not just with the network. It would be technically possible for an iPhone to do that on Verizon/Sprint if Apple had chosen to use a different chip, such as the kind other phone manufacturers have elected to use.
Of course, this is probably all irrelevant to the OP's issue. It was merely a point of clarification, especially for those people who are used to being able to use both voice and data at the same time on Verizon. When they switch to an iPhone, they are often surprized at the limitation.
    Best of luck.
