Timout on port 993 Following Switch to PPPoE from New ISP

Immediately following a switch to a new ISP my Mail ceased working. Mail diagnostics reports:
The server error encountered was: The connection to the server “mail.mac.com” on port 993 timed out.
My new ISP uses PPPoE. My former ISP was Dynamic DHCP.
I know I have my DLink wireless router set correctly to PPPoE and the internet works perfectly. Only my Mail with Mac.com seems affected. Mail's connection doctor tells me Mail is connected to the internet.
.mac account comes up as green
smtp.mac.com:myname comes up with could not connect to the smtp server.
My wife's iMac is doing the identical thing.
Any ideas?
Blue side up,
Bob

I can't be sure from what you've told me, but I recently had this same issue when I moved my PPPoE from a Linksys router to an OpenBSD router. For some reason, the mail.mac.com server(s) are very sensitive to improperly set link MTUs (the maximum packet/datagram size which can be sent over a network link without being fragmented).
Neither Gmail's IMAP server, nor any other server, web, mail, or otherwise, seems to choke on this, but adding the appropriate rule to my router restored access.
Background: Ethernet links have a maximum MTU of 1500 bytes, where as PPP incurs an overhead of 8 bytes for tunneling metadata. Thus, PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) has a max MTU of (1500 - 8) or 1492 bytes.
I don't know how or if you can do this on your DLink router. Try the manual or support for the router.
For anyone experiencing this using a *BSD router/bastion host running the pf packet filter, the following scrub rule worked for me:
scrub on $ext_if no-df random-id min-ttl 255 max-mss 1440
I doubt all of these options are required. The key is the "max-mss 1440", which ensures that all outgoing (ie, to the internet) packets are uniformly less than or equal to 1440 bytes (giving pppoe a good margin) so that fragmentation is not an issue.

    Hi TomG101,
It seems that there is a configuration conflict on the virtual switch port .
Also I tested the command on my lab , it works .
For troubleshooting please  create a new virtual switch then try to configure again .
Any further information please feel free to let us know .

  • How to find which port on the switch that it connected with Mac address?

    Hi,
I am trying to find which port of the switches it connected to thru mac-address?
I am able to get the mac-address from the ip address when i do
"show ip dhcp binding snooping" at the core switch.
But when I move on to the Edge switch to check which PC with this Mac address connected to the port,i returned with no result.(onli trunk port result)
I use sh ip arp | inc 000d.60cb.445d
but didn't give me which port it connected to.
    How to solve this problem?
    thanks!
    KL

    Hi KL,
If you are already on the edge switch you can run a command "sh mac-address-table address " and it will give you the port number.
Incase you get a port which is a trunk port that means the end device does not exist on this switch and exist on some downstream switch. So you can just find out the ip address of the downstream switch with "sh cdp neigh detail" command and connect to that downstream switch and then again issue the command "sh mac-address-table address " and check the port number and follow the above steps till the time you get the switch on whcih end host is connected.

  • Cisco 5 port and 8 port gigabit unmanaged switches

I am looking for 5 port and 8 port gigabit unmanaged switches in Cisco. Please provide the BoM for the same. As per my understanding the following switches can suffice the requirement (SG100D-05 and SG100D-080) however I am not sure about the DC power, whether they can be used in normal AC environments.

The SG100D-05 and SG100D-08 are too small and their power requirements are too low to justify building an AC power supply into them like the larger SGx00 switches have, so they are wired to accept DC power and use an external power adapter (included) for connection to an AC environment.
There are really no optional components to these devices, so the BOM would be as follows:
    5-port SG100D swich: SG100D-05
    8-port SG100D swich: SG100D-08

  • The connection to the server on port 993 times out...

When I attempt to delete mail or move mail to my trash I receive the following error message:
"""The message could not be moved to the mailbox “Trash — iCloud”
the connection to the server :p01-map.mailme.com” on port 993 times out"""
I have never seen this before, anyway to correct it?

Regarding the iPhone (5 in my case) it works relatively well with charter.net IMAP and smtp functions at mobile.charter.well.  But does occassionally have sync problems as well.
To fix the problem with my MacBook Pro Mail app, the Apple senior tech could not determine the problem, so he told me to reinstall the app.  To do this I had to run the Archive and Install feature of the recovery disk (hold down cmd-r on reboot).  Of course this two two hours to complete, as well as run software updates.  And it did not fix the sync problem.
So??? This one has me stymied!
Oh, one other input.  The email app "Thunderbird" works perfectly with charter.net IMAP and its smtp, syncs every time!

  • Any advice as to why I'm getting Email Server Timeouts for my 2 email accounts (ports 993 & 110)?

Email Server Timeouts for my two email accounts:
For the time periods April 12-21, 2012 and April 27-present, 2012 I have been unable to access my email account at ***** through the pop server. The server returns them message "The connection to the server “*****” on port 110 timed out."
I have also had the same problem accessing my gmail account via IMAP, receiving the following message: "The connection to the server “imap.gmail.com” on port 993 timed out."
I used the Connection Doctor program connected to Apple Mail and received the following information:
Mail was able to connect to the internet.
Gmail: Could not connect to this Gmail IMAP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the "Use SSL" checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences.
BayanMail: Could not connect to this POP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences.
SMTP smtp.gmail.com:*****@gmail.com Connection and login to server succeeded.
*****Mail SMTP server: Connection to server succeeded; login not required.
Can you help me with this problem?
    I am running OS 10.6.8
    Mail 4.5

The Motorola Droid Razr has a camera that sets up the shot to take a quality picture so its not in an instant. My wife also doesn't like that feature but I believe in the settings you can disable some of those functions. You have to read the owners manual for optimal settings.
Now email sent from the native app that came with the phone is totally useless. If you have a email service like Gmail or Yahoo Mail or Outlook Email go to the google play store and use the stand alone app. I can tell you that when we email photos the best email app is GMail or Microsoft Outlook Mail.
I take a picture and then select Gmail and it attaches and sends with great speed and Outlook works this way also since the attachment size is greater than other email programs. Your local isp or even exchange server will not send such large attachments
And I agree those apps preloaded should be able to be removed. If I buy my phone I should say what I want on it. But alas unless you do some other methods you can find on the web those dumb apps will remain.
    Good Luck

  • Port 993 error message, now can't set up MacMail for GMail account.

I've been using MacMail for years without a problem. Recently a little exclamation point came up with an error message indicating that the server couldn't connect with the 993 port for my Gmail account. After trying to update my software, restart the program, etc etc I deleted the account, thinking I'd just recreate a MacMail connection to my Gmail account. Not I'm receiving an error message that the server imap.gmail.com is not responding, and I can not set up a MacMail account linked to my Gmail.
I've seen lots of people with this problem, but no sufficient answers to correct it. I am not using a portable device, I am using my iMac to try to make this happen.
Please help! Any incite is much appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Hi Emily,
For port 993, is SSL checked & authentication = Password?
    Could this be it?
    Gmail send but not receive...
Here are two steps that have come in handy in related situations
    1) login to gmail on your computer or device via a web browser
    2) once logged in successfully, go to this URL to unlock:

  • Can I use straight cable to connect trunk ports between 2 switches?

    Hi,
Am I able to use straight instead of cross cable to connect trunk ports between 2 switches??
    thanks!

    Hi Devang,
When a 10/100 Fast Ethernet interface is enabled, one end of the link must perform media dependent interface (MDI) crossover (MDIX), so that the transmitter on one end of the data link is connected to the receiver on the other end of the data link (a crossover cable is typically used).
The Auto-MDIX feature eliminates the need for crossover cabling by performing an internal crossover when a straight cable is detected during the auto-negotiation phase.

  • Server refused to allow connection on port 993..why?

I've never used Mail before but tonight I've been trying to get it to work to no avail. I used a site from my university telling how to set it up so I can get my university email through Mac OSX Mail..it's a bit dated but I figure the info is mostly the same: http://www.cs.unm.edu/computerfacilities_and_support/email/mac_os_xmail/
Anyway it says to click the USE SSL box and port 993. Then when I try to get the mail it says the mail.unm.edu has refused connection to port 993.
What do I do now? Thanks!!

Oh i see. Okay please try signing out from the safari yahoo. Then go to safari and clear the history.  Double tap on your device to also clear the mail app. Then go back to General settings, then Mail, Contacts, Calendar settings, try to add the yahoo account again. Put in your email and password, hit done, and then tell me what happens after that. Do not proceed please until you tell me what you see. Thanks

  • Concurrent voice calls Cisco SF 100D-08 8-Port 10/100 Switch

how many concurrent voice call can be conducted at once with the cisco sf 100d-08 8-port 10\100 switch?

    Christopher,
As far as concurrent voice calls we don't have any documentation as to how many it can support.  It is strictly based on the bandwidth for the network as to how many calls it can handle.

Anyone know how I can connect the GigE port to a switch at 1Gbps?
I connect the HH4 GigE port to my computer and it does so at 1Gbps (according to Windows XP)
I connect my computer to a netgear GS608 and it does so at 1Gbps (according to Netgear status lights and Windows XP)
I connect the HH4 GigE port to the GS608 and it does so at 100Mbps!! (according to the status lights on the GS608)
    Cat 5 cable used - BT Home Hub 4 (Type A) | Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.130.1.10 | Last updated 20/08/13

    correct about cable.
Cat5 is not suited for Gig speeds.
Cat5E can cope but again would be the weak link if the hardware can utilize the speeds.
Your switch maybe picking up the inablilitly of the Cat5 cable to produce the right speeds and is auto switching down to maxamize stability. Borrow or buy a Cat6 cable and try that out

  • SG300-28 28-Port Gigabit Managed Switch

I've forgotten username & password of SG300-28 28-Port Gigabit Managed Switch. Is there any to recover them? but I don't want to lose configurations.

    Hi Anton,
You can access boot menu and choose password recovery but this option is only accessible via serial console and after you see Cisco logo hit ESC button once.
Once you choose password recovery current password will be ignored during this current session only so the first thing you need to do is to change and save new password. You can use CLI for this:
    switch(config)#username cisco password cisco
    switch(config)#exit
    switch#wr
and you should be ready to go :-)

  • Why can't I extend my wired TC port with linksys switch?

Why can't I extend my wired TC port with linksys switch?

Temporarily, connect a laptop to one of the LAN <-> ports on the TC using an Ethernet cable. Turn off wireless on the laptop. Can the laptop connect to the Internet?
If yes, you know the port is working and the Ethernet cable is working.
If yes, connect the switch to the same Ethernet cable. I assume that you are using an "unmanaged" switch. Some switches may need to be powered off and restarted.
If no on the first test, try another Ethernet cable that you know is working. Try another LAN <-> port as well.
The whole idea is to start at the TC and work outward step by step, checking each connection and step along the way.
