Tinnitus - ringing in ears

I developed Tinnitus immediately after falling asleep listening to music using the stock ear buds. Fortunately I was laying on my side therefore listened with just one ear, so I still have one healthy ear left. I did NOT have the volume up loud...I was listening with the default setting which is right in the middle. First I watched a movie and then listened to music immediately after. I had the ipod set to repeat so even after I fell asleep the music continued over and over. When I woke up I heard the ringing. I discontinued listening to the ipod for one week but the ringing has gotten louder. Even if the volume is set at a safe level it is important not to listen too long. I did not research these issues until after I damaged my ear and I am hoping that letting all of you know their is risk involved, not only in high volume, but long exposure as well. I have an appointment next week to evaluate my hearing. Nothing is worth losing your hearing...BE CAREFUL! Now I listen in only the undamaged ear and the volume is set one notch up from off.

tricky, but you could achieve that with alsa's softvol plugin.
first you need to have alsa-plugins installed
then add something like this in your ~/.asoundrc
pcm.!default {
type plug
slave.pcm "softvol"
ctl.mixer0 {

card 0
pcm.softvol {

slave.pcm "hw:0,0"
control {
name "Master2"
card 0
this should create software volume control called 'Master2' and make applications use it as default (you need to restart all audio applications and sound servers until it takes effect.)
now you should be able to play white noise from mp3 and set the 'real' master channel for it's output, while all other applications are controllable via Master2. Ideally you should set your card's real master volume to 0db
only issue with this that your white noise will be played full blast unless the application from where you're playing it from has its own software volume control. You can solve this by adding another softvol device in your .alsarc (simply copy the pcm.softvol part and change the control name from Master2 to something else) and use it as output and volume control for the noise.

Is there a way to play sound while ignoring the master volume control, even bypassing mute?
I have tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and I get relief of these symptoms by playing white noise 24/7, I currently am using http://playnoise.com/ but there are many different sources of white noise, it could even be an mp3. I like it to be playing at the same volume, all the time, no exceptions. But, when I turn the volume up and down via my media keys or system tray, for a song playing in Amarok or a video playing in YouTube the white noise is also turned up and down, this is not needed or desired.
What I'm trying to do goes against the definition of what a master volume is, but I figure it's worth a shot to ask.
The next option would be to have volume adjusters for applications which I have seen done before. 90% of the time I'm adjusting web browser volume.

Why is my volume significantly lower after the iOS 6 update?

I don't post often since there are hardly any problems with my iPhone 4S but ever since the latest iOS update, the volume has really been bugging me a lot. I remember on my old iPod touch as well on the older iOS, it had a maximum volume so loud it would either distort my earphones or really ring my ears after a long duration of listening to music. Since there has been a 'high volume' limit which I don't have a lock on, plus my volume set to the max, it just doesn't have the same punch as it did before. I so hope Apple isn't taking the same route in volume dampening as Sony did years ago because that's the whole reason I dumped my Walkman; the volume dampener set in after volume 20 out of 30! When listening to a loud rock song, there would be no difference between 20 and 30. but when at volume 30 and the song hit a quiet part, the volume would rise to compensate and it just didn't sound right at all.
i can get around this by using the 'djay' application which has an option to increase the gain until everything got too loud and distorted any speakers attached to the female output. the only drawback is that it only responds to the EQ change of Late Night which I don't use very often at all. i also purchased the Stereophonic application which is great, but the volume gets dampened which big bass beats are prominent. it makes the volume drop and then rise again in that short space of time for the single beat to sound.
does anyone else experience what I am experiencing?

CoD4 Sound cras

Does anyone know any issues with CoD4, X-FI XtremeGamer card & Vista?.....When I join?a ?game, appx:/2 minutes into the game the sound crashes. All that comes out is a high pitch ringing,(your ears after a loud concert)?& remains until I reboot. The card works fine for everything else, Ventrilo also runs fine. I currently only have CoD4 & the Orange box installed, Was going to reinstall Quakewars Enemy Territory, but haven't yet. Teamfortress 2 work's fine. I uninstalled/reinstalled CoD4, didn't even patch it this time, just ran single player, sound still crashed. On-board sound?has also been dissabled in BIOS, The card has no IRQ conflicts. I also sent Creative my CTSi file........ still haven't heard back. cannot help with the sound problem.
For memory, I've got almost the same thing but with 4 sticks of 2gb and only 2 detected on an ASUS P7P55D deluxe.
Bios was my issue but I needed to do this (but with pairs of sticks instead of sticks) after the bios update to finally get my 8gb under windows:
Make a clear cmos. Then boot the computer with only one stick of ram in the port .
If everything is fine, turn off and add the other port of the same color for dual channel.
If it does not boot with the 2 sticks in the port of the good color, try to switch ports again. Maybe one stick is dead?

Extremely loud and distorted noise when on headphones - Omni 10

i returned my intitial Omni 10 as intermittently it would emit EXTREMELY loud noises - electronic, digital noises when on headphones. So loud were these emissions,,i was left with a ringing inmmy ear. i received a replcement, but have the same issue.
This happens with various headphone types and all the drivers on the device show sas up to date. i can see now other reports of this, yest this is the SECOND Omni 10 I have had with the same issue.
Please advise.

In other phones, you can hear the phone ringing and if it was connected to bluetooth, you could pick up the call from the bluetooth headset.
Here with iphone, if its connected to bluetooth headset, it only rings through the headset, which means that if you dont have the headset in the ear all the time, you cannot know that you have an incoming call or message.
Any ideas - solutions - comments please?

I'm having the same problem. I had a plantronics 975 (which I lost, sadly). When connected, the ringer would always be routed through the bluetooth and the iPhone's external speaker. When in silent mode, the iPhone would only vibrate, but I could still hear the ringer in the bluetooth.
I just bought a new Plantronics Voyager+. Now when it's connected, all sounds are routed to the earpiece - including the taps, etc. The iPhone's speaker doesn't ring at all, unless the bluetooth is disconnected or powered off. I'd really like to be able to hear both, like I was before. This is an iPhone 3G running iOS 4 (latest version, not sure what it is exactly). Haven't updated software/firmware in between bluetooths, just changed the earpiece.

Try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button for about 10sec, until the Apple logo comes back again. You will not lose data by resetting, but it can cure some glitches after installing new software or apps.

How do you get your iPhone to NOT ring your notification in your ear while talking on the phone?

So if your on the phone and you get a incoming text message it rings your text notification in your ear??? Really..how do you prevent this??

My ears are ringing from blast of white noise from Logic 9

NEVER had this happen in Logic 8 (or any other software for that matter) on same hardware.. Not only can you not OPEN Logic 9 by clicking on a logic 9 file, SAVE in Logic 9 without it putting audio out of sync, now I discover you cannot RECORD for more than a few minutes without getting a blast of white noise. Seriously, my ears are still ringing 8 hours later from this noise. If they are still ringing Monday I am going to the hearing specialist and Apple WILL be paying the bill. I pray no serious damage has been done and that I will still be able to do mastering work. If I monitor through Logic, even at 128 the monitored audio will occasionally slip out of sync and there will be like a 2 second delay in the monitored audio, then eventually a deafening blast of white noise. To release software in this untested state is totally negligent, irresponsible and downright dangerous. Disgraceful.

Right, it's not new to Logic 9.
I always thought this may happen when either... (pick one or any combination thereof)
1. A drive was asleep (not necessarily the recording drive) and wakes up.
2. The OS starts writing a swap file to the system drive.
3. Journaling kicks in to record changes in the disk structure.
I turn Journaling off on any audio drives.

planb77, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately it doesn't really answer my question since my mail is not on a POP server. It's imap, so it's synced with my iPod. I just wondered if there was a way, while preserving the syncing, to opt out of syncing when I delete.
Any other ideas?

Cannot Hear Ring Unless Headset In Ear?

Cannot hear the phone ring unless headset in my ear. Missing important calls and texts. I can't keep headset on all day, and I can't pair it quickly enough when calls come in. This is silly I will have to only use headset for outgoing calls if isn't resolved or find other brand. :-(

My 3gs has stopped playing through the speakers and when the headphones are plugged in only plays through one ear? it still ring when called and everything else seems fine, whats the problem? it seems like the phone thinks the earphones are always in?

my 3gs has stopped playing music through the speakers, they play with headphones but only through one ear. It seems the phone thinks the headphones are in all the time. The ringer still works when called and i have cleaned the headphone socket the best i can without damaging the phone! Any ideas?

I had the same issue, 4s running ios8, but the plugging and unplugging the headphones did not work, BUT, when I tried plugging and unplugging from the DOCK, it started to work again. There must have been a short in the power plug, not the headphones. I also blew out the bottom power plug with computer safe airjet. Hope this one helps anyone else having the issue.

Ringer volume with ear-bud.

It seems that my iPhone 3gs remember the music and On-call volume for headphone and speaker separately.
However, for the ringer volume, iPhone does not remembering separately and just uses same level for headphone and speaker. -_-;
When I adjust the ringer volume with ear-bud attached, volume control pop-up displayed as 'ringer(headphone)' and 'ringer' for the speaker.
But, the volume level is shared between them.
I had done 'reset all settings' from iPhone and the problem is still remain.
Do you guys have any ideas?
