Tint2's multi_desktop and Compiz

I'm currently running Xfce with Tint2. I really like multi_desktop mode in Tint2 which displays application icons according to the workspace (see screenshot: http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u41 … c5b27f.png). It's usable and effective when switching applications and desktops. However, I would also like to use Compiz because of ...well yes... wobbly windows. Multi_desktop mode in Tint2 and Compiz are not working together because as far as I know Compiz does not follow some specifications. I know that there has been a patch to Tint2 to solve this but it's not working anymore with the current version of Compiz.
Does anyone know if there is any piece of software that offers same functionality than Tint2's multi_desktop and works with Compiz? Or is there a new patch to Tint2 available? I have tried a few panels (xfce-panel, pypanel, bmpanel2) and docks (cairo-dock, awn, docky) but haven't found the suitable one yet. Sure this is not matter of life and death but any help would be appreciated

Tint2 has a systray yes, since a while. Only in SVN though, but since the developer already called the documentation PDF 7.0, I guess he's quite close to releasing 7.0.
The system tray does work for me, but it shows graphical corruption (and fails to update sometimes, too). Frankly, I've grown so fond of my all-text no-icons desktop layout that the system tray annoyed me more than anything else .
Froli: did you try one of the six (!) configuration examples that the source comes with?
You can pull them from online SVN too, if you want.

  • [SOLVED] desktop effects and compiz

    Hello all,
Recently rebuilt my system with Arch 32, had 64 on it and mucked it up.  Everything appears to be running smoothly, at least as can be.  I do have a few questions regarding compiz and other desktop effects.
Whenever I run compiz, it will eventually crash, stripping all borders off windows and I cannot do anything, cannot click anywhere, though I can navigate any open apps on my desktop, just cant bring down menus or such.  the only way to fix is a reboot, and a good thing I have been keeping terminal up.
Which brings me to my second question, I have my terminal set to a transparent background, however, the background in terminal is only semi/quasi transparent, meaning my desktop shows through the window, which is great, but when I move the terminal windows over another window, Firefox or Chromium for that matter, the browser doesn't show through terminal but instead my desktop still shows through the terminal.  My ubuntu system at work works as expected, meaning when I drag my terminal over other windows, the windows show through the terminal not my desktop.  Is there a setting in Arch that I'm missing, or do you know if Ubuntu does some other smoke and mirrors trick?
I have an nVidia 9800GT video card and I installed the drivers, X, and Compiz per the wiki's instructions.
any help would be appreciated, would like to get compiz running smoothly without crashes, which is possible since my ubuntu system has never had compiz crash *knock on wood*.

It sounds like your terminal is using fake transparency i.e. reproducing the desktop background while true transparency is using ARGB visuals (and needs a compositor WM).
If you want your terminal to be truly transparent and it doesn't provide an ARGB visuals option, you need to set a custom matching rule in compiz.

  • Ati X700 and Compiz

I have recently switched to Arch from ubuntu. I followed the Beginners Guide , I installed libgl , xorg and xf86-video-ati and compiz packages. When I launch compiz by typing fusion-icon in terminal , border of the windows are gone and an error occured "Application calling GLX 1.3 function "glXCreatePixmap" when GLX 1.3 is not supported! This is an application bug !".
By the way compiz was working fine on ubuntu.

Copying my reply on your email in here for reference
Well, I haven't done it myself so I only know the basics.
But I just realized something else. Your videocard is not supported anymore by the current Catalyst drivers. Since Catalyst 9.4 ATI dropped support for anything below the HD2xxx series, we're at Catalyst 9.12 now. On Windows ATi keeps a legacy package and does bugfixes on that now and then, but I dont think they do that for Linux.
With an X700 you are stuck with Catalyst 9.3. You could try these packages: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=25105  and  http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=25106
    You should read: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI … yst_driver
And the stuff it links to.
Basicly what you need to do is,
    1. Retrieve all the packages you need to set up the older Xorg, with xorg-server 1.6.3 etc etc
    2. Remove your current Xorg stuff
    3. Install the older packages using "pacman -U <package-name.pkg.tar.gz>"
    4. Install and the older Catalyst driver like you would any package from AUR
    5. Configure xorg.conf
    6. Try it and see what happens
Again, I have not done this myself. So search around and read read read, perhaps you can dig up a hell of a guide somewhere, because there are others with the same problem.
I read you came from Ubuntu? In Arch you have some more work to do to get things working, I hope you have a little experience in that field.
Remember, you only need to do this is your really want Compiz.
I use Openbox and xcompmgr for some effects (fading mostly) myself and am quite satisfied. Perhaps you should give the open-source driver a go? Just don't expect any fancy 3D rendering from them.
Or you could go and get a better supported card. The X700 seems like a nightmare to me.
I bet even Ubuntu doesn't support it with fglrx in their current releases? So you would have been stuck on 8.10 or something with them?

  • Xfdesktop and compiz wallpaper plugin [UNSOLVED]

    Hello!
Im using Xfce with compiz wallpaper plugin. It would be nice if i could use xfdesktop and compiz wallpaper plugin in the same time, to see icons and menu on desktop. Anybody has any ideea how can i resolve this interesting situation?

same problem here: no background & severe tearing.  Using nvidia driver. Compiz as standalone WM.
For test changed xinit to start ONLY compiz+emerald+xterm.  Result: same problem.
When switch Crt-Alt-F2 and Ctr-Alt-F7 than suddenly all works perfect.
It used to work good until some months ago an update broke something. At that time i was to busy to investigate.
Now i created a completely new user on my system (to avoid messing with old config files) and start compiz: same problem.
Ok after a long long search on the internet finally found this on our very own archlinux forums:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=105281
The package they refer to is flagged out of date.
Hmm, after some more reading http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=41438
decided to try install xorg-server from testing and i can confirm
    xorg-server 1.9.3.901-1 = problem solved.
Note: until now never used anything from testing because i'm no good at solve problems.
Installing Arch and keep it running and sorting this particular problem is challenge enough for me.

  • XFCE4 and Compiz in virtualbox on a mac

Ok so i have a 2010 macbook pro with an Nvidia 9600 GPU a core 2 duo 2.6GHz and 4GB of ram and i am trying to run an Arch computer in Virtualbox using XFCE4 and Compiz to prove how flashy yet relatively light weight the combination can be.. i believe i installed Vbox guest additions on the machine but i can't change the resolution from 1024x768 and for whatever reason when i try to use compiz-fusion for compositing it seems not to give me any window decorations (yes its enabled and emerald is installed) and when it does i can't use them or move windows around.. XFCE works fine without it and on my ubuntu laptop with the same processor and amount of memory i got KDE4 with compiz running no problem.. any ideas? i could really use help, if you would like my configs i could post them if you'd like.

This may not help because it doesn't relate directly to using a Vodafone Internet Key but I suppose its worth a shot. I had a network problem with my Arch on Mac via Virtualbox install. I could connect via wi-fi at home no problem but if I tried to connect anywhere else, like the library or at a cafe, it wouldn't work. I fixed this problem by switching the "Attached to:" setting under Virtualbox's network settings to Bridged Adapter. Maybe you could try messing with those settings and see if it fixes the problem.

  • White Screen: xf86-video-ati and Compiz After Trying fglrx? [SOLVED]

I have an ATI Radeon X1200 graphics card.  I recently tired the ATI proprietary catalyst driver (and catalyst-utils) from the AUR.  They did not work well for me, so I uninstalled them.  I had run "aticonfig -initial" but, after removing catalyst and catalyst-utils I restored my old xorg.conf.  For some reason, with xf86-video-ati set up again, compiz starts, but goes to a white screen.  I can see and move my cursor.  Everything functions normally, I just can't see anything.  I right clicked my desktop and created folders as a test.  When I rebooted without compiz, the clicks had been received and folders had been created.  How can I fix this?  I'm using Gnome (if that means anything).  Here's my /etc/X11/xorg.conf:

  • Screen refresh problem in kde4 with konsole, nvidia and compiz

    Hi,
I have for the last month or so been experiencing really slow screen refreshes in konsole. What happens is that the text often doesn't get refreshed and you end up with the cursor not on the correct line, blocks all over the konsole window and blank areas of text. Minimising and maximising the konsole windows seems to refresh them as does using compiz's scale plugin. As I spend pretty much all day using konsole this has been really annoying. I have today however found a fix in this bug report:- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … mments=all
This was to go into ccsm, enable workaronds under utility and make sure "Force syncronization between X and GLX" is ticked.
Thought I'd share is this has really been doing my head in, so hope this helps someone else!

  • LXDE and Compiz Desktop partially stops responding [Solved]

    ok,
So I decided to install Compiz on an LXDE install, don't ask me why I was bored. Well everything about it is running great, except that when ever I open a file or folder on the desktop it opens fine and I close it. I go to open a folder on the desktop and it will not open to save my life. So far it seems only libre documents will open consistently, but folders not so much. Any ideas? The folders will open once I have to logout of X and log back in and I can open one folder and close it and it reproduces the error every time.

So I figured out that it was because I had full directories on the desktop instead of shortcuts, thus it was causing the desktop to freeze.

  • Problems with gconftool and compiz

I'm trying to get compiz to start on boot per the wiki's instructions. Although when I run
    gconftool-2 --set -t string /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager compiz
    and it returns
Error setting value: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.)

I'm still wondering why it happens now at this moment in time...
PC does seem to be a bit odd & inconsistent, the few times I've tested with it, at least so far as we content filtering goes; and if I remember rightly, you're not the first to report previously ok settings suddenly preventing some or all internet until pc is switched off altogether.
    It may work when re-enabled

  • Xfce4 and compiz removal problem: lost workspaces

hi all, i tried installing compiz into my archlinux with xfce4, but after removal, it modified my configuration and i can now use only 1 workspace instead of multiples. i tried with system settings and i cannot change my workspaces number (which is set to 1). any help? where should i watch? i would rather prefer not loosing my xfce configuration...
    thanks

did you try to access workspace config through <menu> - <settings> - <workspaces>?
i had the same problem and was able to solve the issue by increasing the number of workspaces in the mentioned menu...

Also, write english in the code. The programming languages are modeled after the english language, so having variable names in polish is quite useless (except in preventing other people from reading your code and helping you).

  • Gnome panel and Compiz

I have decided to replace xfce4-panel with gnome-panel in compiz but i cannot edit anything because alt-right-clicking does nothing. (Well it work a couple of times, but it would only work once randomly after i reset it.)

    Thanks.
That was what I was looking, however with that command it completely takes over right-click (can't copy, paste, etc). Would anyone know how to make it apply only to right-clicking the desktop?
