Tinting shadows with Gradient Editor

I recently saw a presentation that spoke of tinting shadows on an image by converting to black and white, then
creating a gradient map layer.  From there you went into the Gradient Editor and place the cursor directly beneath
the gray scale, and starting from the black end, move it toward the white end until the arrow cursor changes to a
finger pointer.  You then use the value in Location...
Unfortunately, every time I do this my cursor is ALWAYS a pointing finger.  I can put in color stops, but I don't
believe that was what the technique used...  I've tried using alt, ctrl, and/or shift in all the combinations I can
think of, but no matter what I do, I always get the pointing finger instead of the arrow cursor.
Does anyone know what I need to do differently to get the Gradient Editor to show an arrow cursor until I reach
whatever point I should be at when it changes to a pointing finger?  And what IS that point?  Does it represent
the darkest black in the image, or what?

OK, (hopefully), here's a screen shot of the Gradient Editor.  I'd put an arrow on there, but I can't find an arrow brush, so where I put the cursor is a red butterfly right below the gradient...
When I saw the technique shown, the cursor there was an regular curso, and as you move the cursor toward the white point, at SOME point, it's supposed to change to a pointing finger.
As I said, mine doesn't...

  • Trouble with Gradient editor - Photoshop Mac

    Hi,
I can't for the life of me figure out how to manipulate the gradient added to a layer (a rounded rectangle) in photoshop CS5.
I open the gradient editor and try to manipulate the gradient colors with the controls, but when I save, nothing changes with the gradient color.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks.

Hi MTSTuner! Thanks for helping me with all of this!
Eliminating the color overlay did not work. I have CS5, so my blending options window looks like this:
So there is no gradient editor accessible in the blending options. And clicking on the preview does not do anything either. When I close the blending options, I go the gradient editor on the top of photoshop:
I then double click on the big dark rectangle in the above picture to access the gradient editor. Then when I try to manipulate the black squares with the white diamonds (below) in the gradient editor to get the right gradient, nothing happens when I press ok:
How should I go about this? THanks again for your help.... it is badly needed!

  • Issues with rendering shadows and gradients in Android folios

Does anyone have experience or solutions as to how to fix a problem with gradient feathers, transparency and drop shadows in Android renditions/folios?
In the iPad rendition (1024x768), there are several scrollable frames, multi-state objects etc. with transparencies and gradients. When this is viewed on Android devices, whether the iPad rendition or Android specific renditions, it renders the transparencies, gradients and drop shadows as a white tone and isn't rich in any way.
Is this a known problem or is there a way around this?

    Hi Dave,
    Here's the screenshots for you.
    iOS
    Nexus 7
    Samsung Galaxy Tab
On this one in particular, it's the gradient feather on the bottom (they are scrollable frames), and the 'i' and 'contents' buttons in the top right.
    Thanks,

  • Aperture - Edit with External Editor - Photoshop

    Hi,
I recently made my first attempt via Aperture to "Edit with External Editor" and in my case I have the preferences set to export to Photoshop CS4 Extended. The External Editor File Format (in preferences) selected is TIFF and as advised by Apple's Help menu this is set at 16-bit. The External Editor Color Spaces is set to Adobe-RGB (1998).
I selected an image with some barrel distortion, hit the export button, and Aperture sent the new master to Photoshop. I did my fixing and saved. This automatically sends the updated file to Aperture. This is very handy and practical but I was shocked to see the size of the new and fixed file. The original file was a JPEG at 4MB and the new fixed file was a colossal 200+ MB file. I ended up throwing away the new file - too large.
I am just wondering if this is normal? This is my first time using the Edit with External Editor in Aperture and I am also quite clueless about using Photoshop efficiently and properly. Could I have done something differently and received the new and fixed file at a smaller size?
Thanks for your advice and help.

    This is normal.
TIFF files get rather large and the 200 MB sounds about right. If I send a 1.63 MB JPEG at the same settings in PS CS5, I get a 134 MB TIFF after applying the Lens Correction filter and saving.
If I send the same file as a TIFF 8-bit in Adobe-RGB (1998), I get back a 54.73 MB file.
You could therefore send as an 8-bit TIFF to reduce the size. Additionally, the PSD format tends to return a slightly smaller file size (51.xx MB in the case here).
A JPEG file is actually only an 8-bit file, so it isn't really necessary to go to 16-bit, but many users like to protect against further degradation of the JPEG when editing externally (especially from posterization where smooth gradients - such as a sky - start to break down into visible steps in the color transition).
I personally send as TIFF 8-bit in the sRGB color space and if the image shows degradation, then I might change to the TIFF 16-bit (or simply not use that image).

  • How can I get rid of pink tint in Elements 6 "Editor" ?

How can I get rid of pink tint in Elements 6 "Editor" ?  I received Elements 6 free with a scanner. It works o.k. on my Windows XP, except whenever I go to Editor workspace, the photo turns completely pink -- no other color.  I can use the various tools on the pink, but this is useless, as I don't want a pink photo. Can't even convert it to black & white -- just stays pink. I tried everything I could think of to get a normal color transfer to editor from the organizer, but no luck.  Please help.

This is an update to the pink tint problem.  The problem mysteriously FIXED ITSELF today, after being stubbornly pink for weeks.  I have no idea what happened, as I didn't do anything -- it was somehow already fixed when I started the program.  So maybe it will revert again, who knows, but hoping for the best.

  • Need help with gradient map

    Hello All,
Please can someone please advice me how to get the following gradient, I have tried but with no luck I am not good with gradient map!

    Hello!
What part do you have trouble with? the recreation of the gradient, or how it affects the image?
In the gradient map editor, you can double-click on the bottom markers (called gradients stops) to change their color, and drag them around to re-create what you see... Click between two markers to add one, drag a gradient stop down to remove it.
In fact, you do not need the fourth gradient stop, the white one on the right side.
The top markers control the transparency (in regular gradients, gradient maps are unaffected)
With such a gradient map, the dark areas of the image will be white, neutrals will be black and light areas will be white.

  • Where is the gradient editor in Flash CS4?

    Hi,
I'm on an intel iMac, and trying to make the switch from Flash CS3 to CS4. I have done several searches for this topic and to no help thus far.
I'm familiar with the gradient editor in CS3 but I can't seem to find it in CS4. I have found the Color Editor which has a few basic, preset radial gradients along the bottom but that's all.
I've searched the tool pallete as well. I appreciate any help and apologize if this is a dumb question. It's early and I'm tired.
    Many Thanks, Frank B.

    Window> Color
Change the type to a gradient and then you can edit.  It's pretty much the same as CS3, so perhaps I'm missing something in the question..

  • Shadow and gradients slow page load...why?

I have read how shadows and gradients slow down a web site, and that you should replace them with (essentially) screen shots of the same (i.e. looks the same, but not using the shadow or gradient feature of iweb).
I understand that larger photos (etc) slow down a page load, but I don't follow why these do. I am curious for an explaination. It would seem intuitive that the apple folks would publish a web site in a way that did not cause this (i.e. covert shadows and gradients to jpgs or something).
    thanks
    bob

Shadows and gradients generally actually don't cause professional designers any issues, how you design it and what file format is important, most produce high quality images with a low impact to the web page load time. I have been designing for over 20 years and quite like iWeb challenges .
iWeb however does something quite different, it adds to an existing image, mainly using javascript which slows the rendering and page loads. iWeb works great for non professionals as it's dreadfully poor from a site point of view, remember iweb is a toy in the software world of web design tools, so enjoy it for what it is..
A simple way to prove is to design a single page in iWeb and the another using, say, Dreamwever, look at the rendering/load times.....

  • Lost Gradient editor

I have added some new gradients, and now the gradient editor won't come up.  I was working on a tutorial file with one of their images supplied on a disc, and discovered the editor wouldn't work, so I then tried one of my own thinking it was the image, and it still won't come up.   REALLY need help and I'm VERY new at PS!!!

In responding to posts in almost all cases there IS UNCERTAINTY.   In many cases the OP describes the problem inadequately,  incorrectly,  in a confusing manner, and you don't know how hardware/software problems affect the reported problem.   So yes, most posts are just guesses, otherwise there would be just one answer to each thread, and we don't usually see that.  In addition, in many cases the poster can not check out the solution before posting it as they don't have the problem on their screen.
In many cases it takes at least 6 posts by different people to get the problem solved, and each poster is offering a guess as to how to solve the problem.   This guess may trigger another thought, which brings up another guess.  If you have ever worked in real life that is how problems are solved, you take an idea, see if it works and then it if does not move to another idea.
Since there are so many variables in computers, users abilities, and ways of doing things in photoshop, there rarely is ONE single answer that is obviously correct.   Even a correct answer may not work for a user as the technique is too advanced for his level.  More simple, and less "correct" methods my work better for him.  Some of my answers fall this this category.
If no one posted because of uncertainty there would be no posts.  Even the smartest guy on the forum, or at Adobe, can answers the questions with certainty.  Otherwise we would have bug free software for every release.

  • Monitors with Gradient Problems?

    Hi All,
Further to my recent post "monitor screen display terrible!"
Finding a monitor without spending a lot with excellent picture quality is proving differcult! I have tried a Philips 22" monitor Model 220CW9FB and now a BENQ T900HD 18.5 WS monitor all not as sharp with good contrast as my 4 year old G5 iMac. Also has a gradient problem e.g. as you get up off your chair and continue to look down at the screen the white background of the screen turns light blue then darker and colored parts turn white!? Also looking at an angle to the side anything light blue turns a light brown!? Then as I'm viewing something as in Apple Discussions each box of replies alternate white then light blue and so on but looking at normal distant as you type each box are white. You have to lean back in your chair, twice the distance back to actual see the blue box then white box!?
What's that all about? I have noticed this on the new 20" iMacs too but the three new 24" iMacs are great just like my Rev A G5 iMac of 4 years. Are these inferior screen problems anything to do with them being TN panels as I've just read about?
I really don't know where to go from here as the screen quality is important. I'm use to the great screen quality of my old G5 iMac and don't want to go down in quality for the sake of moving from a Mac PowerPC to an Intel Core 2 Duo even though I need this for EyeTV hybrid and all the features of iLife '09 etc.
I don't want to spend a huge amount for an Apple display as I might as well get the entry level 24" iMac. The main reason for not getting the new iMac is I don't like the glossy screen, although today I heard there is an option for a 24" matt screen... any truth in that? Then again will I be able to return the new Mac mini I've only had for 6 days for a 24" iMac?
Other suggestions seen here is turning my G5 iMac into a stand-a-loan monitor or maybe a 20-year-old CRT 19" TV I have can be used as a monitor and if so what connections are needed? Any ideas on these options?
So buying the new Mac mini has created a lot of unexpected problems. I thought as asked about before getting it was told any monitor would have the same picture quality as my old G5 iMac, but after the fact found out this is not the case.
Thanks for the read & any ideas/thoughts much appreciated...

AFAIK Hmmm Googled "As Far As I Know"... So far I've tried three monitors (all with gradient problem) so it looks like you are correct. I'll try a couple more today as if I need to return my Mac mini with Philips monitor need to do soon for a 24" new iMac even though the Mac mini is not at fault. I'll have to get use to the glossy screen. While writing this an item "iMac or MacBook display too glossy? Apply inexpensive non-glare LCD protective film" has appeared in MacDailyNews.
    http://macdailynews.com/index.php/weblog/comments/20561/
Thanks for the idea using my G5 as a monitor but maybe quite an involved process?
It's a shame in all my research before buying a monitor no salesperson mentioned TN display panels. Mind you since the problem no salesperson has said they know about TN display panels or better monitors, just saying any monitor will work with the new Mac mini. Very frustrating!

  • Textarea with HTML editor is not working

    Hi all,
This is producing me a real headache.
I created the simplest application in the world with one Textarea with HTML editor, and the editor control does not show the usual tool bar for fonts, color, alignment, etc. Just a ordinary textarea.
Moreover, this was working before... I moved to another location in my work (me, not the server). Yes, I thought about the Internet Explorer, but Firefox has the same issue.
So any idea I can try to make this work?
I have another applications already in production with the same issue.
    Need help!!!!!!!!!
    Thanks in advance.

    Lukas,
I would go and integrate FCKEDITOR (http://www.fckeditor.net/ ) into your application.
Here are instructions on how to achieve this (sorry but only in German):
    http://www.oracle.com/global/de/community/tipps/einbinden_fckeditor/index.html
    It basically means:
    1) copying the files from fckeditor under the /images directory
(you can use the instructions here: http://daust.blogspot.com/2006/03/where-are-images-of-application.html)
    2) creating two shortcuts INCLUDE_EDITOR_SCRIPTS and EDITOR
    3) placing the shortcut INCLUDE_EDITOR_SCRIPTS into the page html header and
    4) placing the shortcut EDITOR into the post element text of your plain textarea element
    That's it.
BTW, FCKEDITOR has been included in Apex 3.0 as a standard item type.
    Regards,
    ~Dietmar.

  • Create a VC Model for BEx queries with Cell Editor

    Hello All,
I am trying to create a VC Model for BEx queries with Cell Editor.
BW Development Team has created a BEX query with complex restrictions and calculations using Cell Editor feature of BI-BEX.
The query output in BEx analyzer is correct where all values are being calculated at each Cell level and being displayed.
But, while creating VC model, system is not displaying the Cells. Thus, no VC Model can be created.
    I have executed below steps:
    1. Created a VC Model for BEx Query - ZQRY_XYZ
    2. Create Iview -> Create a dataService -> Provide a Table from the Output
In the Column field system is not showing any of the Cells (present in Cell Editor)
Please help me to solve this issue.
    Thanks,
    Siva

    Hi
If 'Cell Editor' is been used then that query must have the structure in it. You have to select that 'structure' object in your 'VC Table'.
If you select that then you will get the required result in the output. This structure will be the structure where 'cell reference' is used in BI query, You have to select that structures name.
    Regards

  • JDev Extensions: Register only a particular XML file with custom Editor?

    Hi Guys,
I have extended the Editor class and created my own Editor - MyCustomEditor. Below is the part of 'extension.xml', where I am registering any XML document with this editor.
    <editors xmlns="http://xmlns.oracle.com/ide/extension">
<!-- Register our custom editor -->
    <editor id="myCustomEditor.design"
    label="My Design"
    editor-class="oracle.xxx.xxx.MyCustomEditor" >
    <node-type class="oracle.bali.xml.addin.XMLSourceNode" />
    </editor>
    </editors>
But my actual requirement is to register my custom (design) editor to a particular XML file which has a fixed name, lets say MyApplicationFile.xml. I don't want this Custom Editor for any other XML document. How can I achieve this?
    Thanks,
    Rajesh.

    No JDev version??
Here is what you can try.
    1. Subclass XMLSourceNode to CustomXMLSourceNode. Mention this class in editor tag.
    2. In addition to <editor> you may need to have <xml-recognizer> along with <include-filenames>MyApplicationFile.xml</include-filenames>.

    Hi
I have just updated my iPhoto to Photos in OS X and i have noticed that the option to edit photo with external editor such as Photoshop has been removed. will this be back!
Its now a pain to send a photo directly to my favourite photo editing software.
    Ross

    Thanks Terence
Totally understand being a new app and not an update.
So i'm a ammeter photographer and i like the way i can view my photos in iPhoto and i'm happy with the new App for this also, however i like to edit my photos in PS from time to time and i shoot in raw. As i can no longer select edit in external editor from the photo app i tired to drag a RAW photo to PS but this didn't work. i then tried dragging to desktop but this then made a jpeg so i loose my raw advantage. I would like to be able to find my original raw photos easily so i can edit them in PS.
    Hope that makes sense?
