Tints vs. transparency; printing indesign file - so confused now

Hello!
I'm still learning indesign so i'm definitely not a pro. I've been working on an assignment which consists of creating compositions in indesign. The indesign file basically has text, lines and colored areas.
I've just realized that I am only allowed to use a couple of colors and their tints. This whole time i've been using color and working with its transparency. Is that remotely the same thing? I am not sure how to get the exact same color i've produced when working with the transparency of a color as a tint. (I'm not suppose to be using transparency yet... XD) Please help.
Also, once the above is figured out, what is the correct way to export this file as a pdf? Finally, I also need to export all 12 compositions as a 72dpi jpeg to upload online-- how do i do that? The file in indesign is a cmyk file and i'm pretty sure it exports as a cmyk pdf which is okay since i'm printing the pdf. The jpeg part really throws me off though.
So far, this is what i'm 100% sure on:
Indesign:
File> Adobe PDF presets> High Quality Print> give the file a name and save
then
this is where i get confused - do I changed the standard options and compability options as well? what about the compression? i've basically printed so many variations of the project playing with the above (from what i've read) and have reached a point in which i'm no longer sure what the correct colors of my file are once exported as a pdf.
Please help me. Thank you in advance!!!
(forgot to mention i'm working with indesign CS5.5 and adobe acrobat pro x)

Hello!
Thank you for your kind and helpful replies. I was away celebrating Thanksgiving. Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving, rest of the week!
@ Peter
Thank you for your explanation of what offset printing is. It really helped me visualize the process. Is this something used only when it comes to printing large quantities of work then? (I'm assuming large files as well)
@ Dov
Thanks for explaining your answer in simpler terms. I now understand what you meant. If i'm understanding things correctly, it's not good to use tints over other colors/objects yet it's alright to use them when they are on white backgrounds. Also, it's best not to use tints when it comes to overprinting; transparency is best.
@ Will
Thanks for your information! I'm a bit confused now to be honest; pdfx-4 is not recommended when overprinting with transparency?
@ Dov
If I'm understanding correctly, what you and Will are saying is that it's best not to import pdfs that are saved as pdfx-4? I really enjoyed reading all the extra info. It's all quite exciting! (trying to wrap my head around this)
Thanks guys!!
I decided to export the indesing file under Adobe Pdf Presets> High Quality Print. I didn't change any of the standard settings. With regards to the jpgs, I used the advice recommended - File > Export, choose JPEG, 72 ppi. I do have one large question though...
This is what one of the compositions looks like in indesign:
This is what it looks like when I view it under View> Proof Colors in Indesign:
This is what it looks like when I export it as a Hight Quality Print pdf:
This is what the jpeg image looks like when I export it under the following settings:
And this is what the jpeg image looks like when I export it under these settings:
Is it correct of me to use the exported jpegs with the simulate overprint option selected even though i'm only digital printing this pdf file? The color of the jpeg resenmbles the most of the pdf color. Thus... is it alright to do that?
Thank you

  • How to batch print indesign files to ps?

    In Windows OS,
I have a lot indesign files needed to print to postscript files -->PDF.
I tried to include them together in a book file and print them multiply, but it turned out that the page information just displayed the book's name, not every document's info.
How could I achieve the goal through scirpting?
    p.s.
I just hope zevrix's BatchOutput has a Windows version.

SuperMacGuy wrote: "I'd like to very politely ask Olav, Dov, and anyone else to not question why any of us need to Postscript > PDF versus export a PDF directly from InDesign. I, and numerous others, have requirements of our workflow or output that we can't change, or technical problems that are only overcome by PS-PDFing. I understand that you also may want to inform others that direct PDF export might be better, that's OK too."
As long as I know that it's a requirement for a particular poster, I won't bring it up (though I might forget from time to time). You'll note that as soon as the original poster wrote: "It was just a workflow we have to obey... " I did not press the matter any further.
But it's a widespread and false assumption that deserves challenging, so I will not stop questioning it. There is so much "information" out there about InDesign's PDF export that is simply wrong, based on superstition, hearsay, incomprehension, and pure stupidity that I have to "question why," just as a public service. It has nothing to do with "company line" (which I routinely violate anyway). It's just the truth.
All of the "problems" with direct PDF export are traceable to either ignorance or antiquated equipment/workflows. I've worked in plenty of places where I had to deal with the latter under policies set by the former, without recourse to argument, so I do understand the problem!
    So we're cool, I hope.
    Thanks,
    Ole

  • InDesign Adding Shadow/Lines to Transparent PSD & JPG Files?

I'm relatively new to InDesign, but as I've run this issue through an expert friend of mine who could not puzzle it out- I'm coming here.
I have a number of different images, both JPG's & PSD's that have some transparent areas in them. I'm incorporating them into InDesign files using the "place" command, but when I export the InDesign file to PDF a strange sort of drop-shadow looking effect is coming up between the areas that have images and those that were transparent on the JPG & PSD.
The transparent areas on the JPG & PSD's were created by simply deleting areas of a graphic, or by placing a small image onto a larger transparent background. No masks or clipping paths involved.
    Thank you for your help!

I recently attended a seminar with Terry White (http://terrywhite.com/techblog/) and asked him about my issue here. He said, and I am paraphrasing here, that the problem is that my image with a transparent background is being processed through a filter (or something) that readies it for the final image- but the image behind it is not going through this transparency process, and that the inconsistency adds weird black shadows and/or halos under some printing situations.
His solution was fairly simple- take the image BEHIND the one with the transparency, and set the transparency of that image to 99%. Its not visible to your eye, but it means that both images will be process through the "filter" and you won't get those weird halos and shadows.
I haven't had the opportunity to play with his solution much- but on first run-through, it seems to be working for me.

  • When I convert InDesign file to pdf, the background of my image is no longer transparent

I am working with InDesign CS3, and when I place a .gif file onto the document, the background of the image is transparent, which is what I want. However, when I convert the InDesign file to a pdf, that same image shows up in a white box. Why is this happening? Is there a setting that I am missing when I convert it? Thanks in advance

I am converting it via export, and actually it is an ai file, my apologies.
The white box does not appear in InDesign print preview.
I corrected the link, but still no luck.
I am opening the document in Adobe reader, and overprint preview is turned on.
Keep the suggestions coming please! I really appreciate it.

  • Why is there a box around my Photoshop image showing in my InDesign file when I print?

I created a brochure in InDesign, in which I have imported two Photoshop images of buses that I had previously clipped in Photoshop. The file looks fine in InDesign and even when I export as a PDF, but when I print the PDF I can see a box surrounding one of my clipped buses. How do I fix this issue?
    InDesign File:
    PDF File:
    Printed:

You will always see it on a laser printer, not on offset. Doesn't matter if you print from InDesign directly or from any exported PDF.
    What I do:
I do the transparency as you did in Photoshop
I add a path around everything which has no transparency (Opacity ≠ 0). This path will surround also the smooth transition from the object to the transparent area.
I define this path as clipping path.
I place the image with this clipping path into InDesign. I select the clipping path.
I convert the clipping path into the image frame (right mouse click context menu.)
The image will go smooth to the background but for the laser printer it will cut away the part which will cause the YDB syndrome. So the image will fit for both, laser and offset.

I think exporting to IDML only works for some errors. I had an Indesign error 4 recently and it didn't work for that - in fact I had to recreate the whole document. There is a file recovery service though at the following url but unfortunately you have to pay a fee:
    http://markzware.com/support/faq/recover-bad-file-service/
Alternatively, you could try resetting your Indesign preferences.
My knowledge is quite limited when it comes to reading the crash code that you posted - perhaps someone-else on the forums may be able to be of more help.

  • We have an applescript that will batch print InDesign CS6 files from a folder to a laser printer using an InDesign print preset. The script does not work in OS X Yosemite. The script errors out with the print preset. Any thoughts?

After I put a small delay in as shown, your code ran fine, tested on about twenty ID files, using ID CC 2014, OSX 10.10.2

Hello, Our indesign file keeps crashing and we need to go to print today. We use CS6. Please help!

Ok - we're going to need a few more details.
Operating System - Windows or Mac?
Version of CS6 - are you fully patched to the latest version (Help>Updates)?
Do you use any 3rd Party Plugins (Help>Manage Extensions and look for 3rd Party Plugins)
At what point does it crash? How are you exorting/printing?
What file type or action are you doing when it's crashing?

  • InDesign File "Stuck" Printing 2-Sided

I opened an old Indesign (I think CS3) file this morning and converted it to CS4. Whenever I attempt to print the document, it does so as 2-sided even though the print dialog 2-sided option is off. I am on a mac running 10.6.3 with an HP printer.
Turning the printer on/off, re-starting the mac, printing other documents (including Indesign documents) 1-sided, saving the file under a different name, turning 2-sided on/off, and changing other print dialog options (e.g. thin border) seem to have no effect on the problematic file - it consistently prints as 2-sided. I finally cut and pasted all content into a new document and now have complete control again over whether the document prints 2-sided.
It seems as though there is some printer setting stored within the Indesign file that that I cannot modify. I don't recall how I last printed that particular Indesign document under CS3. Other other CS3 documents that I suspect I would have printed 2-sided are converted to CS4 with the current default printer settings AND with no adverse effects when I print them
This clearly isn't a big deal because after wasting a ream of paper (some sarcasm), I've resolved the problem. However, it is so weird that I am curious as to whether any one else has seen this.
    Marilyn
P.S. I use InDesign daily, have been using CS4 for over a year and have not had an problem. I am a bit suspicious of the mac 10.6.3 upgrade I got this week 'cause in claimed it would "increase printer reliability"...

I suspect it is more of a problem that  Mac OS 10.6.3 introduced to InDesign. The print driver hasn't changed. InDesign I now know "carries" print presets with its files that are persistent and has one of the more complicated interfaces with the OS for printing.
I did figured out I could use the Property List Inspector to look at the print settings used  for the last job printed. I can produce dumps from the inspector from various jobs and us File Merge to compare them. Doing so I noticed that Text Edit files (whether printing 2-sided or not) all contain a key called PMCustomPaper that is explicitly set to false. New InDesign document using the Default InDesign Print Preset doesn't set PMCustomPaper to true or false. If I create an InDesign Print Preset from a file that successfully prints 2-sided, I can use that Print Preset to "fix" InDesign Document to print 2-sided. The Property List Inspector for such print jobs has PMCustomPaper set explicitly to false.
I also look at the output of a Property List Inspector dump from the InDesign document I have that was "stuck" printing 2-sided. It too has PMCustomPaper explicitly set to false, but has has very different keys for what I believe controls printing duplex. These keys stay set in the file despite changing the InDesign printer dialog to turn 2-sided off. I suspect these keys are left over from an older HP driver or an older Mac OS release.
Seems a little ridiculous to have to go though Acrobat or find old InDesign programs that have the proper settings to get InDesign to print properly now.
(I doubt 2-sided is the only problem - I suspect it's just the first one I've run across.)

  • IS it possible to print image name/Path in a different layer in my existing indesign file??

I want to print my image name and its path in a different layer in my indesign file.. Is it possible through script? Can any one help me how can I do this..

    Hi Tom,
I'm pretty sure the IPTC data gets completely consumed inside an Adobe
PDF file, even if the original images have this metadata or extended
data (XMP) information. In other words, they do not make it through.
Try downloading a copy of Enfocus Pitstop - I know you can link to an
original authoring document (InDesign/Quark) through the CertifiedPDF
route but you cannot display the image name?
    This is an interesting topic.

  • Specific InDesign file (CS6) won't print

HI- I have CS6 and one of my files will not print.  (Well it will print the first spread, but nothing else). I have tried installing and uninstalling the printer driver, and other indesign files I have will print, but I have one specific file that will inly print the first spread. I'm wondering if there is a corrupt file in there or font or something?
Here's the kicker- I exported it as a .pdf and tried printing the file off another computer, and it will STILL only print the first page but no other spreads.  All the content appears in the .pdf however.
    Any ideas??

As weird as this may sound... I just had the same problem!
I have a 7 page document and InDi would only print the first page!
Then, I exported it to PDF, and Acrobat also would only print the first page!
    I started troubleshooting...
    Printing each page alone:
    page 2 would not print
    pages 3,4,5 would print!
    page 6 would not
    page 7 printed
It comes out that on pages 2 and 6 I had some paragraphs with paragraph style A, and there were some overrides.
The minute I cleared the overrides, the whole document printed without a problem!
Obviously, this can't be the problem. Text overrides never stopped InDi or a PDF from printing before
But this was the reality in my scenario
If anyone can shed some light on this... I would be very interested.
    Thanks
    Davey

  • Print Mulitple, Unrelated InDesign Files plug-in/script

Does anyone know of a plug-in or script that allows you to print unrelated, multiple InDesign files? Using a book does not work as each InDesign file has it's own print settings.
I'm looking for something similar to Zevrix's Batch Output, but for only the print feature. It allows you to print each InDesign file with the last print settings used for that file.
I greatly appreciate any help. Thank you.

I suspect you might get some help over in Scripting, if it can be done.

  • Why would a commercial printer ask for Illustrator native files instead of InDesign files?

Why would a commercial printer ask for Illustrator native files instead of InDesign files?
For example, We create 32 hang tags for the same brand. Each hang tag looks identical except for a color bar calling out the different fits. We set the files up in InDesign with a Master Page congaing all the similar artwork. This process saves us a lot of time when making changes to the entire package of hang tags. So my question is... why can't the printer use InDesign. They are saying they convert our InDesign files to Illustrator before printing.

A printer who insists on native files but can't take InDesign is not properly equipped. It suggests they haven't updated their capabilities in 15 years.

  • Creating InDesign files for both print and mobile output?

I am looking for a way to create files that can be multi-purpose for both print and mobile/online environments. I would like the output to be 2 different PDFs from one set of Indesign files. The problem I am encountering is that currently my files are full of hi-res and vector graphics, effects, and are generally created to be optimized for large-scale printings on offset or digital presses. I am trying to use the same files to generate files that are optimized for mobile and online presentation but finding that the number of vector graphics specifically is slowing page display down.
My initial reaction is that the solution would have to be dual-development. Multiple forms of 'master graphics' would have to be created and placed on multiple layers (one for print and one for mobile/online).
Hi-res files could be made lo-res in Acrobat or Pitstop, but vector imagery would have to be rasterized and I am not aware of a method to do that in either of those programs.
I have found some info on adobe.com leading me to think that maybe CS6 addresses some of this, but the majority of my work is being done in CS4 with only the bleeding edge being done in CS5.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

the output to be 2 different PDFs from one set of Indesign files.
You can accomplish this by saving each PDF using a different preset - High Quality Print for the high res, smallest file size for web
but vector imagery would have to be rasterized...
You should be trying to keep all vector work as vectors. This, in most cases, lowers the file size. There are a couple of exceptions to that like if the vectors are very complex (layered etc) and you are using bitmap effects like drop shadows. In general, rasterizing will increase the file size and lower the quality.
Is there any functional difference between the 2 PDFs? I am wondering why exporting using 2 different presets will not do the job efficiently enough. You could always save your linked images with a low res version - same file but make a copy 100dpi instead of 300dpi. This might help but InD normally downsamples the images anyway when exporting as smallest file size.
EDIT:// In Acrobat, you can save as "Reduced Size PDF" which strips out all the meta data etc and makes the PDF lighter and faster for web use. This would be a final, before publishing online step.

  • InDesign files disappear from Epson SP R1800 print queue

I'm on a MAC OS 10.5.8 and using InDesign CS3 5.0.4. I have an Epson SP R1800. When I try to print an InD file it momentarily shows up in the printer queue, but then disappears and nothing happens. There are other printing issues, but we'll address these one at a time.
FYI: Earlier today I downloaded an Epson printer driver v. 6.12 (in an effort to troubleshoot) and installed the driver.
I also tried unplugging the USB cable, reselecting the R1800 as the default printer and restarted twice.
I can print PSD, MS Word and emails on the R1800 successfully. BUT NOT IND FILES.
    Desperate in Denver!

The following technote from Adobe might help you out, even though it's not specifically written for your version of InDesign, it might still help point you in the right direction.
Can't print to non PostScript Epson printer from Illustrator or InDesign -
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/331/331376.html
Some other things you could try:
Create new TextEdit document, and try and print it (that confirms your printer is working properly to start out with)
Create new InDesign document, with just one line of text / one page and print it.
If the InDesign document is quite big (many images etc), try printing in smaller chunks, and send image data as Optimised Subsampling (Print dialog / General / Graphics)
If all else fails, you could try the PDF trick from the notes in the above link. E.g. create a PDF first, then print the PDF instead of the InDesign file.
