Tiny bit of tea spilled on my MacBook Air

ok I was at a coffee shop and I took a sip of my full tea and accidentally spilled about 2 teaspoons of it on my macbook. I have a plastic cover over the whole thing including the keyboard. Most of the tea spilt on to the keyboard and some got in between where the keyboard and screen meets. I wiped it down quickly with a napkin because everything was really on my plastic cover I really thought it would be fine. It was such a small amount. I continued to use my computer just fine for another 30 minutes, shut it, packed it up and went home. When I got home I noticed that a small amount of water had gotten in between my case and the computer on both the top and bottom. I think it leaked through when it got in the middle. I'm talking a small small amount. Anyway, my computer then wouldn't power on and when I plugged it in no green light came up. I know it's not good to try and power it on or charge it but I didn't even know it wasn't going to work because it was just working for a good amount of time after I spilt it. I now have it soaking in rice. It's such a small amount do you guys think the rice will fix it based on what happened? Thanks.

liquid spills very rarely end in good news.  You need to take it somewhere to have it looked at.  You should not turn it back on until then.

  • Spilled water on MacBook Air - safe to use after a week?

Last Friday I spilled a glass of water all over my MacBook Air's keyboard. I jumped up, tipped the laptop over to get as much water off as possible, and dried off the outside. I took it in to Apple immediately and was told it needed so many repairs, that it would cost more than the laptop itself. The guy who looked at my Air was able to turn it on, but the monitor was flickering and had horizontal lines. He took it apart and said the motherboard was fine, but I would need a new logic board, speakers, screen, etc. and said I should be able to get my files off onto an external hard drive. Since it was such a costly repair that I couldn't go for, I didn't get a list of everything that had to be replaced.
When I got it home, I wasn't able to power it on like he could. I let it sit on my dresser all week, open and upside down, to let it dry and allow any extra water to drip out the front. Tired of looking at it, tonight I decided to try one more time and turn it on, and it did! I was able to email myself some important files that I thought I would never see again, so programs and internet worked. The monitor seemed completely fine, the brightness goes up and down normally, the speakers work, and I didn't notice any problems with the keyboard.
It seems to be completely fine, but I'm a bit worried about whether or not it's safe to use, and if there's anything I should be looking out for. At the Apple store I was told that it needed so much, but maybe it's fine for now? If I am able to use it, should I be thinking about replacing it anyway? I'll be wanting to use it next fall for school. Sorry for the huge wall of text, I thought it would be best to know as much as possible.
    Thanks.

That's great news. I'm not a computer guy but I am very experienced in automotive. The way I see it is even when you took it in and they cleaned it there is no way to get all the water out if it's really bad. The water will cause shorts and all kind of thing will malfunction. Now that the water is dried I would take it in and get it retested. You see, the first test they did on it was not accurate because of the water (causing it to short). Now you can get a good test. Who knows, it might be just fine. I remember drying  cars for weeks at a time. One thing to have them look for is any corrosion that might had formed. My guess (only a guess) is that if it's working good now you got really lucky and it will be fine.

  • HT5860 Spilled water on MacBook Air 11' 2011. Doesn't turn on instead it beeps three times. What's wrong with it?

I spilled water in my MacBook Air. Not on my keyboard just over it. I dried it as much as I could and at first it wouldn't turn on. Then when I plugged it to charge it it did turn on but then it shut off. The light is green on the cable and instead of turning on it beeps three times then it pauses for a bit and it beeps three times again. What does this mean and what should I do?

It means you pulled electrical power thru a WET computer system and caused compounded damage to what was already damaged.
The obvious has occurred in mixing water and electricity

  • Spilled water on MacBook Air and won't turn on...

Two days ago, I spilled a glass of water on my MacBook Air. I tried very hard to get as much water off, but the water spilled directly on top of the keyboard (no cover) and underneath the laptop itself. I cleaned off as much as I could, but it didn't seem to turn on. I usually close it and open it and it turns on (kind of like a sleep mode) but it didn't do that. I'm pretty sure the laptop fried the motherboard as it tried to turn itself on (without the power button).
I then tried hitting the power button, but it wouldn't turn on.
It's been a couple days and it still won't turn on. Several computer science majors who work at the IRT department at my university said the motherboard is most likely completely fried.
I want to take it to Apple to have them look at it, but I'm unsure whether it would be pointless at this point or worth it. It would probably cost more to replace and fix everything (if they can) than just buying a new laptop. I'm just unsure what to do, and unfortunately I don't have much time either.
    Any ideas or help??

I'm inclined to ask how old you are, but I'll refrain.  Take it to Apple, and let the Genius assess the damage.

  • Yogurt spilled on my macbook air and now sounds stopped working. Pls help

    Hi!
So mac and yogurt were inside my bag and the yogurt's lid accidentally opened getting into my mac's charger, usb and headphones port. I tried turning it on and everything seemed fine, sounds and the heaphone port were both working but the usb port wasn't so i just wiped away the yogurt. After wiping everything I could see off, i tried connecting my mac to the power and it's working. Usb port not working tho and the sound stopped working, tried connecting a headset and still not working. Those seem to be the only problems. Right now my mac's open and standing to it's side near the heater to dry. What should I do? :(

Right now my mac's open and standing to it's side near the heater to dry.
Yes, everyone tries the "dry it out" method, doesnt work,... when it does 'work' it works for a while until corrosion sets in.   Make a service call.
Liquid spills, why your MacBook chassis is a one-way valve for spills
After a substantial spill many people will turn their notebook upside down and shake it, not only does this not work, but it spreads liquid havoc throughout your machine and makes things often as bad as possible.
The keyboard itself acts like a one way valve in the case of a substantial liquid spill. While liquid pours into the bottom chassis easy, it does not come out easily at all, and in the case of any spill, most of it will not come out by turning it upside down. Disconnect all power and contact Apple for diagnostics and repair.
Do not attempt to, after a spill, ‘dry out your MacBook’ and test it
After a spill most people invariably try to “dry out” their notebook by various methods, including hair dryers and otherwise. This both does not work, and after a substantial spill of any magnitude, even if the liquid was water, residue is left behind.
There are additionally many very tight places inside your notebook where liquids will linger for a very long time, and cause corrosion or worse.
Immediately unplug your notebook and contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and parts replacement.
In the case of very minor spills people will “dry out” their notebook and feel success that their notebook is working ok, however invariably in nearly all instances after 4-14 days an error / fault pops up and is usually followed by more.
In case of a spill, damage estimates are impossible,.....anything can be fixed, without question.......the question is cost.
contact Apple for in shop diagnostics and cost estimation ....possible parts replacement.

  • Coke spilled on MacBook Air

So somehow coke got spilled on my Macbook Air...........after some hours when we turned it on everything worked ....so the sound, the keyboard,mouse.... but the problem was you couldn't see anything on the screen.....it was kind of black.......but i used this flashlight on the back where i could see the apple logo and it provided some light on the front screen.....I tried to turn on the brightness but it didn't work.......luckily all my files, etc were saved.....its at the repair shop.....
Does anyone know what the problem could be? I

either the screen is dead, or the cable between the screen and motherboard is dead. only one solution : contact apple for a repair.

  • Macbook Air is not turning on or repairing?

Hello, I know there are a lot of similar discussions but my situation seems to be a little bit different. I turned my Macbook Air on the other day and it completely froze at the login screen, the keyboard and mouse were unresponsive, so I forced the computer to shut down by holding the power button for several seconds. When I tried to turn it back on, all I got was the white screen with the apple logo and spinning wheel, after about a half hour of this, I forced it to shut down and tried again... same thing. I tried resetting the PRAM by holding down Command+Option+P+R, it chimed twice and started to turn back on but shut off again. I then tried to restart in Safe Mode by holding Shift, a grey progress bar appeared under the Apple logo and spinning wheel, once it went all the way across the computer just shut off. Eventually, after many useless restarts, I got it to boot up in recovery. I tried to verify the disk and it told me to repair it, so I tried to repair the disk and after a few attempts it cannot be repaired. I then tried to reinstall Mountain Lion, but every time it says there is an error after a few seconds.
Now, everytime I restart the computer the grey progress bar is there, it gets to the end and the computer completely shuts off. The only way I can get it to turn on in anyway is to start up in recovery, where the "Macintosh HD" disk is greyed out and cannot be reparied (after many attempts) in Disk Utility. The only files this computer contains is some photos and Pages documents that are in my iCloud, so I'm not too worried about everything being erased, I'm just not sure exactly how to do it. Does anyone know exactly how to erase the disk and reinstall Mountain Lion? Or any other method that might work better? Ideally, it would be great if I didn't have to erase and reinstall, but I'm loosing hope at this point.
Ps. I purchased the MacBook Air in June of 2012 with Lion in it, I then updated it to Mountain Lion shortly after I bought it. It is the basic 11" model.

Thanks for the reply! I managed to solve the issue by starting up in recovery and using disk utility to erase the disk. Turns out that my computers date was set to April 1999, which wouldn't allow me to reinstall Mountain Lion. After setting the current date in Terminal, I was able to repair the disk and reinstall OS X. I lost all of my files, but most of them were in my iCloud so I'm just happy that my laptop is working again.

  • Which is a better performer, the macbook air or the mac mini?

Which one performs better, the late 2013 macbook air (standard configuration: 4GB RAM, dual core i5 1,3 Ghz CPU) or the mac mini core quad core i7, 4GB RAM with a regular hard disc?

    LowLuster
No Air model can be as fast as a Mini with a quad core i7 CPU. Can't happen.
I didnt solicit your opinion, and it IS a fact, .....skilled users here on this board will and DO TELL other users OFTEN that:
"outside of processor core use (video/ photo etc.) you will NOT NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCE on X computer vs. slower Y computer"
I have a 8 month old QUAD core Mac Mini and it is , as I said above "noticeably not ONE BIT" faster than my current 2013 macbook Air with 8gig.
My quad core came with 4gig of RAM as I recall, I immediately tossed in 16gig.
    Notice the word "noticeably"
Your subjective hyperbole aside, you are wrong......., those above yourself and myself (point wise,...as Ogel has stated, Clinton has stated, and others) state this fact very often regarding ---"outside of processor core use (video/ photo etc.) you will NOT NOTICE ANY DIFFERENCE on X computer vs. slower Y computer"
Its not my opinion, its a fact, namely additionally that I stated "noticeably"   - "my quad core mac mini on MOST EVERYTHING (which is most things since 'most things' are NOT photo and video editing) is not "noticeably" ONE BIT faster than my Macbook Air.
"most things" people do (most people) on their computer does NOT involve photo and video editing (photoshop pro, final cut pro etc etc)
This is a fact, that AS SUCH most people WILL NOT notice any difference in general computer use between a quad core mac mini (for example) and a entry level macbook Air. (SSD vs. HD speeds aside).       Nobody is going to notice faster youtube, or Word use, or websurfing, Acrobat Pro, Quicktime play, general APPS that havent changed much in 7 years.
Dont curse on these family boards please, its uncouth.
    Peace

  • Deformation of the lift screen of MacBook Air

    Hi,
I have a bit problem with my MacBook Air, the black plastic that serves as a hinge to lift the screen is a bit deformed due to have the macbook air running a total potential during a few hours, the hot air that expel the fans has caused this. That worried me a lot, should I go to the apple store about it? The deformation it isn't very important but I'm worried about becoming more important if I use it more times running a total potential.
    Sorry for my poor english.
    Thanks.

should I go to the apple store about it?
If it is of concern, then absolutely you should do so. That particular part should have no heat related deformation at all. Whatever the cause, you should seek to remedy it before it becomes a problem for which Apple may deny coverage because you ignored obvious symptoms.

  • Tea spilled on bottom of macbook pro

Tea spilled on the counter where my macbook pro was. It only got on the bottom (underneth) of the computer and maybe a splash where the charging port is. As soon as it happened, i grabbed a towl and quickly cleaned it up. Everything is still working properly and the computer never shut off on it own. Should there be anything to worry about or is it okay?
    Thanks

well i know that none got into the opening on the back, i just didnt know if there is any opening underneth the computer (like and cracks) that the tea couldve gotten into. i looked up a few conversations from people spilling drinks, but theirs were mostly on top of the key board. and theirs turned off automaticly.

  • I spilled some tea on my macbook air.

I spilled half a cup of tea on my macbook air, and it shut down right away. Do you think that it will be able to work again?

Your system shut itself down immeditely ... which says much.
Tea/milk/soda all are "more than simple water" and leave residues behind in the deep internals.
Talk to Genius Bar, but DO NOT turn it on again or plug it into wall power again until (actually IF) the Genus Bar clears it.
Others have reported repair bills of $900, since it is considered "accidental damage" and not covered by warranties.
    Good luck.

  • I spilled Iced Tea on my Macbook Air. What should I do?

I spilled Iced Tea on my Macbook Air yesterday afternoon? What should I do?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Don't turn on the Mac. It may be damaged, so it's better not to turn it on. See > https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5511
Take it to an Apple Store or reseller. If it was damaged, it's possibly better to replace it, as it may be cheaper

  • Macbook Air trackpad seems to be a little sticky, no damage or spill.

I haven't spilled anything or damaged my laptop, at all. It has been a little over a year since I purchased the Macbook Air, but I think my warranty or free service repairs or whatever have just recently expired. My trackpad seems to be sticky, like it is stuck down the slightest bit or something. It still works fine when I move my finger around on it, but the clicking is just a little difficult and irritating (especially right clicking). I was wondering if and how I could fix this. I have learned that if I click it fairly hard repeatedly it will work perfectly, but after a very short period of time it will go back to being seemingly slightly stuck down or sticky. Also, as the days pass, it is getting worse. Any help is greatly appreciated! I just don't know why this would happen if it has been treated with care. Thanks!

  • I have a Macbook Air that had some coffee spilled on the keyboard and as a result the plus/equals key is no longer functioning. Can I use a program like Ukelele to reprogram a different key to be my plus/equals key? Can I program a function key? key

I have a Macbook Air that had some coffee spilled on the keyboard and as a result the plus/equals key is no longer functioning. Can I use a program like Ukelele to re-program another key to do that function? Can I re-program a function key to do this function?

Water + electronics do not mix.  Something was damaged insode, and the logic board may be corroding as is.
Take it to a Genius Bar for an evaluation and repair estimate.
This is accidental damage and not covered by warranty.

  • Macbook Air keyboard dimly lit after spill...

I spilled liquid on my keyboard a little while ago, and it wasn't the first time. I cleaned everything up, but afterwards I noticed that the left half of my keyboard is lighting up much dimmer in comparison to the right side. Also, sometimes when I plug in my charger, the light won't go on when I attach it or it only works on one side when I flip it over. I'm not good with tech-y things, so it would be impractical for me to take my entire computer apart and it would be easier to have it repaired. I'm just wondering if there's an easy solution to fix this, or what the repair cost would be. I have a MacBook Air (13-inch, Mid 2013). Thanks!

Make sure you have a good solid backup!!
You're lucky your computer is working at all.  That state may not last long.
Follow John Galt's advice and have it looked at as soon as you can.
