Tiny display

Hello,
So I increased the size of fonts and everything. The display is perfect now and text is big enough to read. But the some softwares still have tiny display. Like for example, when I play YouTube video using FireFox browser the player has a very small icons. Same problem with VLC and Steam!

That is because those programs don't support DPI scaling.

  • Weird Tiny Display Smudge

    Hey guys,
I just randomly got this really small (but massively irritating) smudge on the screen of my Macbook Pro. It looks like something I could just wipe off, but it isn't. I've tried my hardest to get rid of it, but it seems like its on the "inside" of the screen? When the screen/computer is shut off you can still see the blemish. Anyone know what this is, or a possible fix?
    Thanks!

This pic is the best I could take. It makes it look really tiny, but it is bigger than it looks in the pic.

Anyone know what this is, or a possible fix?
Have no clue what it is. Take the computer to an Apple store or an AASP. Whichever is more convenient for you. Let them figure it out. You can also check these links - Do-It-Yourself Laptop Repair, FixYa and Computers

  • My Lion woes, panes, detect display

My complaints so far.  I am sure I will come to love the new features in Lion though when I get done with my bi', okay, will stop there.  Some complaints are dependent on me using screen zooming / scaling all the time due to my distance I sit from my display.
Launchpad in VERY uncontrollable with my logitech performance mx mouse when trying to scroll left and right.  It stops for a second and when I go to select an app right then it seems to have inertia from the scroll and bounces back to the opposite end of the 3 panes away from my intended choice.  It is non scalable which means I have to lean forward in my chair to view the type.  Don't laugh, I am always using the command + zooming mouse wheel a lot as my display is my 24" HDTV 6 ft away.  Yeah, I am lazy about leaning up.  In a few months I am going to have a 55inch display and be sitting a few feet further away.
The grey direction arrows (active/non-active url direction) in Safari are too similar to each other at a glance.  Make them CONTRAST more PLEASE.
Never seen so many color wheels before.  A lot of thinking going on.
My arrow mouse icon was flickering and completely disappeared for about 10 seconds.
Screen video capture programs which worked in leopard doesn't work now. (I expect updates, maybe from developers but if not I want a refund for recent purchases).
Screen shot dashboard program does not work.  (needs update obviously)
Finder windows with panes have to be constantly adjusted (almost) each time I open them.  I haven't figured out why yet.
Autocomplete typing feature inputs the wrong word sometimes and does this even when I do nothing but type as normal!  I have had more unintended but correctly spelled words than ever before.  Maybe I am doing something wrong.
When trying to select a file to upload in Safari the selection window apparently did not give me the choice to look in all my files, desktop, documents, user.  It was as if was unable to show the actual files window.  After looking at this again I had to stretch the already big window to find the other pane.  This is not good!  Reminded my of Windows which I gave up years ago.
(receiving attention from apple as of 7/21)
My current 24" philips hdtv display with PC IN has been used with 2 minis in the past but is not discoverable with Lion and if it tries all video output stops.  Great customer support though with this as 2 Tech guys talked to me at length and they sent it up the chain of command to be addressed in an update they think within 10 days at the longest.  I am including this in case other ppl have this issue.  They are working on it.  More on topic :  I have to plug in a backup tiny display and then fool the system by then keeping the lower desktop resolution and plugging into the bigger display.  Sometimes when the mini sleeps I have to restart with the smaller display and go through tricking the system again.  If I try to DETECT DISPLAYS with the bigger display it then stops all display output and I have to restart using the smaller display, etc.
Thanks in advance for setting me straight with anything I am clueless about and Thanks to Apple Engineers if they are looking through these discussion boards for feedback.

Well folks I did find a work around for the time being.  Though it doesn't restore my options in the menu button I did uncover the Detect Displays button.  I was looking at my post request and behold I saw a related article next to this thread that says OS X Mountain Lion: About the Display pane of System Preferences ( http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5369?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US ) in the article it shows that they did indeed hide the option but it can be uncovered.  The funny thing is this article does not show up when I search for my problem.
Hold the OPTION key in the Display Preference pane and the Gather Windows button will transform into the Detect Displays button.
Here are screenshots to demonstrate what happens when you toggle the OPTION key off and on.
Again why on earth did they hide this to begin with or  not include it in the Display Menu option at the top of the screen?  I don't know and I hope they fix it.  This is WAY TOO complicated of a solution for a simple function. Nobody is going to intuitively find the Detect Displays option.

  • 100% zoom is too small on screen

Hello, I'm using photoshop CC on amacbook pro retina. I mainly use photoshop for web design and when I open a document that is 300x200 px, the 100% view is too small on screen. Any ideas, It was this way on PS cs6 also before I upgraded. I just tried to delete the prefs file and restarted PS and it did not change. I have also tried to change my screen resolution to "best for retina" and it is still the same.
    Steve

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be condescending.  But the problem is you've paid extra for something that's actually an improvement, but now you don't want it to work any differently than what you had before.
You don't appear to understand how images and displays actually work.  I'll try to provide an explanation...
Images are made out of pixels.  Little squares of one and only one color each that when stacked in rows and columns together make up what we call an image.
Your display has the ability to display little lighted squares of one and only one color each (it's really a bit more complicated than this, but I'm trying to keep it simple).  Stacked in rows and columns these tiny display sites make up your display screen.  Before the Retina display, every square inch had roughly 100 x 100 of these display sites.  Now (assuming a 15" Macbook Retina display) you have 220 x 220 of them in every square inch.
In order to fit so many more in a square inch they have to be much smaller.  With me so far?  Each tiny display site is 1/220 of an inch on a side, by definition.
When Photoshop displays an image, it sizes it per your guidance - you set the Zoom factor.
100% zoom - by definition - means that one pixel from an image will occupy one display site on the screen.
Can you now see how, since the display sites are much smaller on a Mac retina display, an image displayed at 100% will appear smaller?
Now here's where some additional magic comes in:  The folks who programmed your operating system and browser realized that you would probably not like to see everything less than half the size it was, so they automatically use 200% (or more) zoom behind the scenes so that the pictures and stuff on web pages and application controls are displayed nice and big.  This happens with older non-retina applications automatically as well - it's called pixel doubling.
    To directly answer your question:
Set an appropriate zoom level in Photoshop to make the image as large as you'd like to see it and you will be fine.
It may help you to feel better to think, when you see the sharp edges of the pixels at zoomed-in sizes, that you have a display that's got such high resolution and is so accurate that you can see the edges of the actual pixels, while all the folks who don't have Retina displays are just seeing them blurred together.

  • [SOLVED] .xinitrc is not executed at startup

I would like a window manager or a desktop environment to start on startup. I do not have display manager installed. Currently, logging in gives me a terminal, in spite of having modified .xinitrc.
    My ~/.xinitrc file is:
    #!bin/sh
    exec awesome
The result is the same (login to terminal) when I replace "awesome" with "startlxde" (I have installed both). Curiously, when logged in to a terminal, running the command "startx" successfully launches either awesome or lxde; depending on which I list in .xinitrc.
    Additional Information
I have recently installed Arch following the Beginner's Installation Guide (bootloader Syslinux). I had the tiny display manager (tdm) installed from AUR at one point; this functioned fine (choosing whichever DE/WM I wanted). I believe that the .xinitrc worked prior to installing tdm;  I am suspicious that this may have something to do with it.
These are the contents of /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc (which I believe executes in the absence of a .xinitrc in ~).
    #!/bin/sh
    userresources=$HOME/.Xresources
    usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap
    sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources
    sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap
    # merge in defaults and keymaps
    if [ -f $sysresources ]; then
    xrdb -merge $sysresources
    fi
    if [ -f $sysmodmap ]; then
    xmodmap $sysmodmap
    fi
    if [ -f "$userresources" ]; then
    xrdb -merge "$userresources"
    fi
    if [ -f "$usermodmap" ]; then
    xmodmap "$usermodmap"
    fi
    # start some nice programs
    if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ] ; then
    for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/?*.sh ; do
    [ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
    done
    unset f
    fi
    twm &
    xclock -geometry 50x50-1+1 &
    xterm -geometry 80x50+494+51 &
    xterm -geometry 80x20+494-0 &
exec xterm -geometry 80x66+0+0 -name login
I have also tried using the default .xinitrc from /etc/skel/.xinitrc and adding the exec command at the end (this file has some additional for loops in the beginning); this made no difference.
    All files (/usr/bin/awesome, /usr/bin/startlxde, ~/.xinitrc) are executable.

Unless I am completely misunderstanding something, everything you have is working correctly.
The result is the same (login to terminal) when I replace "awesome" with "startlxde" (I have installed both). Curiously, when logged in to a terminal, running the command "startx" successfully launches either awesome or lxde; depending on which I list in .xinitrc.
This is exactly what should happen. .xinitrc is not supposed to be "executed at startup" unless you configure your bash (or zsh) profile to run startx. If you want to go straight from power on to X, you need to configure both automatic login and start X at login.

  • Best dimensions to match a 4:3 video

I plan to create keynote slides that will be exported as a QT movie and imported into Final Cut Express. The slides will be inserted into the video that I am editing. The video is 4:3.
What is the "slide size" that would best match the 4:3 video? Do I select the 800x600? or a custom setting?
The goal is having the keynote slides match the video as much as possible, without creating another layer of the black letterbox bars.
    Thanks!

    DEAR SIRS,
I have just read your information, with thanks, now I understand there is a resolution option in the beginning of setting up my slides...
which brings to my attention... I DIDN'T set the resolution, causing the default setting comes into play.
When I did my presentation, the projector sized my computer screen with tiny display... I imagine it's to do with my setting of resolution problem. Since my slides are already set, how do I change it? can anyone help? Thanks.
How do you change the resolution of my slides so when I present my presentation, it would be large, neat, and visible.
    Tks.

  • Acer AL1916W problem

Hi, I bought an Acer AL1916W widescreen monitor to use with my PC not too long ago. It's native resolution is 1440x900. This works fine on my PC so thought I might try it with my new Macbook using Apple's DVI to VGA cable. Sadly, my Macbook doesn't support 1440x900, so I either end up with a tiny display on my Acer with huge borders or it fills the screen but the resolution is very poor and fuzzy.
Is there any way to get the Macbook to support 1440x900 or am I basically screwed?

I'm interested in using the Macbook as a desktop replacement so I'm mirroring the display on my Acer.
Anyway, sorry, I've made a slight mistake with my initial post. It's been a couple of weeks since I tried to use the display. I'm trying it now and it seems the Macbook does indeed support the 1440x900 resolution of my Acer. But I still end up with borders top, bottom, left and right of about an inch and a half. It is sort of usable but not ideal and it would be nice if I could get it to fill the screen.
Thanks for the tip about putting the display prefs in the menu bar. It's proved invaluable whilst I've been toying with the various resolutions.
Incidentally, I tried spanning the monitors and using them as one large display and the Macbook fills the Acer's display beautifully and looks very sharp. Sadly, this isn't really what I want to do.

  • What MacBook Pro do you all recommend me to buy? 13 inch or 15 inch?

I'm a college student who is majoring in criminal justice and would soon like to switch over to Mac for the first time. I'm the type of person to rather pay more money in one shot then buying a new Mac every year. For example let's say if I buy the $1,999.00 MacBook Pro model with retina display, its understandable that the price is a bit high but like I mentioned before I'm the type to pay a lot in a one time payment then buying a new Mac every year. Mainly I will be writting papers, editing, reading; etc. No graphics, music, producing, remixing, video; etc. Just school and personal work. Please help me out here if its worth the investment of $1,999.00.
    Thank you!

Go to a computer store and try both the 13" and 15". Both will do your tasks so the decision is left to which one you like working on more. Will the tiny display bother you when writing papers or will the 15" not be portable enough for you?
Another consideration when buying an Apple computer, are you sure the papers you write will be 100% compatible with your professors' tools and will you be 100% compatible with other students for collaboratively working on projects? You don't want to spend a lot of time converting documents between Office versions and you want to make sure your professors can open your documents without loosing formatting.

  • I am have problems with firefox 5& 6. It does not display correctly. I have tried the no squint and the internal zoom. Some pages load ok, others like yahoomail, load tiny unless I zoom and then other pages have problems. Why? What else can I be doing?

I am frustrated. With the no squint, which has a mind of its own, then some pages are fine, in others the type is too big or too small for the frames. If I use the default Firefox zoom that is no better. I have to set things for like 130 percent and am constantly having to click on the zoom and change things. I never had that with previous versions? Why can't Firefox just go back to displaying text in the correct frames at a decent size?

I have played with all the options in no squint and the default zoom thing. My email list in yahoo remains tiny tiny, other things do not. If I enlarge that, then other things are too big. I never had this problem with older versions of firefox. I never had used any zoom features, it all sized itself correctly.
To troubleshoot, I tried to open the same things with chrome, and it had much less of a problem sizing the type etc.
I am kind of at my wits end here.

  • Tiny white spot on MacBook Pro With Retina Display Screen

I bought my MacBook Pro with retina display on July 10,2012 It has been working fine but then, I noticed a white spot on the left side of the screen. It's real tiny, proably not even an inch big but I can see it. Other peole have not been able to see it, But I can. I spoke to AppleCare, they said to mail it in to have them look at it since I don't live near an Apple Store. But is it really worth sending my computer in for something that is so small? It is also too late to return my computer.
P.S I think and so does AppleCare, that it is a dead pixel
Should I send it in? Has anyone ever mailed in their computer to Apple before? What is it like? Is it a good or bad experiance? How long does it take for you to get it back?
    Thank You!

I think we have the same issue. I bought my Macbook rpo retina last sept 2012. I jsut discovered it recently as I often watch Tv shows on my ipad3. I happened to watch a tv show in my mbpr lately and saw this tiny white flickering dot on the top left corner of my display. I see it only intermittently meaning in some instances you see it sometimes not. It only happens when in full screen using QT player. If I minimize it and back to ful scrn, the dot disappears. After few mins it may or may not show up.
I brought it to apple customer service and they cant  duplicate the issue. I told them its random and they should wait for it. They said theyve been watching tv shows in full scrn for 2 days already and it didnt happen. I even showed them  video clips - I record the tiny dot flickering using my iPhone - but still they cant reproduce the issue. After I brought it back home, I immediately watch a TV show and see it once again. It dosappears once you minimize it and returning to full scrn mode the flickering disappears.
So I thought Why would it disappear once I minimize it? If its hardware then it should be there all the time! and so I use VLC player instead to check if it would happen as well. for sevral days, I used vlc player to watch all movies/videos and IT DID NOT HAPPEN AT ALL! There is no tiny white dot flickering with VLC! and so I thought maybe this is firmware or driver...and so when the macbook pro has an update recently about 2.0 something...I thought it would resolve the issue but it didnt.
I have inserted a copy of the flickering tiny white dot...

  • Is the high definition (HD) display of my new laptop the culprit behind my tiny impossible to read icons and menu headers in all my CS5 adobe programs?

The toolbox icons and menu headers are too small to read in all my adobe cs5 programs. I just purchased a new laptop with a high definition (HD) screen and 1920x1080 resolution. So far I tried dropping the resolution to 1680x1050 that does not solve the problem. I went into photoshop preferences/interface and bumped up text size to "large" and that made text in menus readable but not the icons or menu headers. Then it occurred to me, the one thing that is different is the HD display. Does anyone know if that is the reason for the tiny icons and text?  Thanks for your help.

    Hi Gene,
I tried what you mentioned and wow! the icons and menu headers in photoshop are a normal size again.
One other thing I did since my first post, I found a way to bump up the size of text in the display settings of Windows and that fixed readability in most of the adobe products I use ( acrobat pro, illustrator, indesign, bridge-somewhat) but not photoshop. Anyways, thanks for your advice! you have saved me from ruining my eyesight.

    Hi Paul ,
It could be a compatibility issue as well as Acrobat 8 is an older version.
Do you get any error message while registering for the product?
Try repairing it and once and also check for updates as well.
Is it happening with all the word files or any specific one'?

  • Sometimes PNG thumbnails are tiny and image displays tiny in slideshow

I switched to Bridge CS4 in hopes of fixing this problem, and it got much better, but every now and then one or two of my PNGs will still get stuck in what I call "tiny mode" where the thumbnail preview remains set at a fixed tiny size no matter how you adjust the thumbnail preview size slider.  When you view the image in slideshow mode it displays as tiny.  On the thumbnail page no dimensions will display below an image in tiny mode.  I can open it in Photoshop CS3 and everything looks fine and the image is full size.  What am I doing wrong?

First thing to try when thumbs don't display properly is to purge the cache. Point Bridge to the folder with troubled thumbs and use the tools menu / cache / purge cache for folder.

  • Tiny insect in my display!

Believe it or not, it looks like I'm not the first to post something like this but I thought I'd give it a shot regardless. I have a 24" LCD display (the LED display) and when I sat down to work today, I noticed a tiny bug crawling around. When I tried to get it off the display, I realized he was behind the glass. I've tried blowing compressed air into the few spots where I can on this thing but no luck.
Anyone have any ideas at all???

Turn the screen off and place a light source near the screen. Leave like that for a while and hope.
That's the method I successfully used to keep my Dell 24" clear of thunder bugs or what ever they are called (all my previous screens have them inside).
