Tiny mov import from PS kills AE

Not sure if this is a bug or if I'm doing something wrong. I'm making tiny animations in Photoshop, (72dpi greyscale 10cm x 10cm, approx 2 seconds length, filesize around 22k). I then export from Photoshop at the default setting, Quicktime in .mov format.
I then import this into AE (where I already have 2 huge .mov files, over 250Mb, playing, which were rendered out of AE and imported back in - these are playing back without any problems or issues.) The tiny imported animations slow down AE to the point of rendering it totally useless, spinning wheel of doom etc. Does anyone have a clue why this is happening? I have a very fast system and AE can cope with many multi-layered huge files without any issues, but this particular problem just freezes AE up almost completely.
Using latest version of AE and PS CS5 extended. (maybe I should be using the latest version of PS too, I just haven't got round to installing it yet).
IMac 3.4Ghz Intel Core i7, 16GB memory.
thanks

Ah, a classic example of Photoshop thinking!  It's time to think in After Effects.
Forget all about dpi.  The concept doesn't exist in AE.  Photoshop only utilizes it as a handy guide for common video resolutions, and it's becoming less useful every day.  AE deals in PIXELS:  the number of horizontal pixels  and vertical pixels in a comp.  DPI is completely irrelevant.
Here's an example: In Phiotoshop at 400 DPI, a 1-inch x 1-inch image has dimensions of 400x400 pixels.  At 100 DPI, a 4-inch x 4-inch image has dimensions of 400x400 pixels.  Imported into AE, both images are precisely the same size: 400x400 pixels
And if DPI means, "dots per INCH",  it must be tough to work in metric linear measures like centimeters, n'est-ce pas?
I then export from Photoshop at the default setting, Quicktime in .mov format.
The ".mov" file extension simply indicates that the file is a quicktime movie.  Quicktime movies are simply media containers.  The file can be encoded via a ny number of schemes, called Codecs.  Here's a metaphor: an .mov file is a bottle.  A bottle can hold many different kinds of liquids: beer, milk, water, juice, gasoline... you get the idea.  Those liquids are the codecs.
The codecs of some Quicktime Movies don't work well in After Effects.  Your configuration of Photoshop may default to one of the bad ones: we can't tell.  But you can --  highlight the problem footage in the project window and look at the information at the very top.  The identity of the codec will be revealed there.
Clearer now?

  • Problem with movies imported from iPad3

Whenever I import footage into imovie, the footage looks good. When I put that footage into a project it stutters.
It doesnt matter if I specify 24fps or 30fps, the movie judders and stutters.
I do not have this problem with movie footage imported from any other device.
    Any ideas?

  • I can't add a title to a movie imported from my camera! how come?

This is really frustrating because I have one clip (an entirely different one than the one I want to add a title to) that is "accepting" a title. but the one I imported from my camera (a testimonial from a client) just wont work. nothing happens when I drag and try to drop a title. with the other one, it turns blue and it's clear I can drop a title. I was able to edit my video and remove some clips.
this has happened before. i need to understand why it happens so 1. i can avoid it in the future and 2. stop wasting so much time messing around with this critcal but SMALL piece.
    please help!

    ill try to help...
forgive me i'm no tech. much like pictures cant be edited retitled etc, once uploaded from camera roll. (they can be in camera roll) I think you can do it on the computer after the fact.
as for where to find the video that depends on the computer. I dont know on a mac but windows based you find the file in your library right click and select rename.
    hope that helps

  • 1st Gen iPad doesn't show movies imported from iTunes

When connected to iTunes the iPad shows that they're in there, but when we look on the iPad in the Videos.app there's no movies. The option is not even there. They all work fine in VLC, but that's without metadata, so it's not ideal. We have restored the software twice, from two different backups but this didn't solve the problem. Thanks for your assistance.

This my "stock" answer for this issue and I'm sure that you have tried the first thing, but take look at the second suggestion and see if that works for you.
Quit the video app and restart. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit the app by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on the video app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the video app icon to close it. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button. Try the app again and see if the movie is there and will play.
If that didn't work - Search for the movie. From the home screen swipe to the right and the Spotlight Search feature will appear. Type the name of the movie in the field at the top, if the movie shows up in the search, tap on the icon and hopefully it will begin to play. Let it play for a few minutes then tap Done. Return to the video app and see if it is in there now.

  • Movie imported from Keynote gets much bigger in GB

    Hello !
I recorded a simple presentation in Keynote and exported it to a .mov file (800x600, 13 mintues, only 10 Mb).
Then I imported it in Garage Band. Just added a short jingle at the begining, in the middle and at the end (I would have add them in QuickTime Pro, but I wanted to adjust them more precisely).
The .mov file I finally exported from Garage Band is 75 Mb in size ! But the jingles I added should be hardly 1 Mb !
Do you think, there a way to preserve the slim size of my original Keynote .mov file ?
    Thank you !

Well, you don't jump into the deep end of the pool after having just downloaded AE... that's for sure!  People have tried it, and people have failed miserably, enduring endless hours of frustration by thinking to themselves, "how tough can this stuff be?".
On the other hand, people who have recognized that AE is a "learn to walk before you run" kind of application and have started here...
    Getting started with After Effects (CS4, CS5, CS5.5,  CS6, & CC)

  • Organization of movies imported from iPhoto

I am just a beginner with iMovie, and wanting to start working with movies taken of my kids. Several months ago I set up iMovie for the first time by importing all my movies from iPhoto. I'm really confused as to the organization of my clips in the clips pane. Some of my older movies are under headings that match the names of the corresponding iPhoto events in which they are found. However, the more recent ones are found under the dates they were imported or last edited. To me this is a huge hindrance to wanting to even begin to learn to use iMovie - that is, shouldn't my movies by default match the events in iPhoto from which they were imported? I don't really care to have them organized by the date they were imported into iPhoto from my camera.
I did some digging around and figured out that the headings in the clips pane match the folders in which they are found in the iPhoto package, but obviously am not going to touch that, for fear of damaging my iPhoto library.
The only solution I can find is to use the event library to manually create an event for each iphoto event. I just don't get why iMovie doesn't use the iPhoto event names automatically in the clips pane, and if that's something I can fix.

Now, when I drag a movie from iPhoto to iMovie, the video clip doesn't have any sound.
Your Sony stores its video content as multiplexed MPEG VX (MPEG-1) files which are "playback" only compatible with QT and QT applications. To retain the audio content you must use an MPEG-based, third-party application like MPEG Streamclip (free) to convert these files before importing to iMovie for editing.

  • Movies imported from iPhoto do not have sound

When I connect my camera (Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W55) to iPhoto, it downloads both the pictures and video that the memory card has recorded on it from the camera.
Now, when I drag a movie from iPhoto to iMovie, the video clip doesn't have any sound. Thus far, I've tried importing in DV format and MPEG4 format. The video will play, with sound, in QuickTime Player from iPhoto, but in iMovie, it doesn't.
Also, when I click on the Help->iMovie HD Help, it starts to open help, but then closes itself. Bug, or do I need to re-download iMovie, or... purchase a higher level of iMovie? If I can't even get the Help function to work, what good is this piece of software?
BTW, I'm on a Mac Pro 2x2.66 GHz processor, 1GB RAM installed running Mac OS 10.5.2.

  • Movies Imported from iMovies to iTunes impossible to rename

    Hi,
I want to watch my movies from Front Row. This application goes to the Movies section in iTunes to access the files that I've imported to iTunes from my iMovie folder. So far so good.
However, because when I "add to library" in iTunes a movie that I've made in iMovies the movie is imported as "small" or "medium" it remains tagged as that in the iTunes movie library.
When I look for movies via Front Row I get a load of movies titled small or medium. Is their any way to rename the files in iTunes? In iTunes you can't do that - or I don't know how. I tried to rename the files by first having them open in Finder (which does allow you to rename them) but then Front Row doesn't see any content in the file and won't replay a renamed movie !!!
    Can anyone help ?
    Thanks.

  • ILife '06 upgrade deleted hundreds of movies imported from my camera

Yes, precious irreplaceable movies of our baby. Yes, I have a backup. But what if I didn't?
The thumbnails remain in iPhoto for the now-vanished movies, but the associated .AVI files have been obliterated from the iPhoto Library.
I guess I would warn anyone with camera movies to avoid this upgrade until this is fixed. How best to bring this to Apple's attention?

I'm sorry this sounds like a snappy answer, but it wasn't meant to be one. If your photos and movies are truly irreplaceable, like mine are, "But what if I didn't" is way too hypothetical for me.
Even if iPhoto was guaranteed bug-free, what if your drive failed? Or your computer was stolen? There's no end of reasons for having backups. Burn a pair of data DVD's of your library of photos and movies and store at least one away from home. Keep another copy on a backup hard drive. At any given instant, the chance of losing both backups is very very small.
Digital photos are much more easy to back up than negatives or prints/slides. I would do it for irreplaceables regardless of any guarantee against failure (which does not exist for consumer software as far as I know)

  • TS4455 Why IMovie no longer shows all movie clips from movies from Kodak camera

I am on an IMac 10.6.8   2.16 ghz intel core 2 duo with 3 gb memory
    I am using IMovie 11  (9.0.4)
My camera is a Kodak Playsport shooting hd video
On all of over 300 videos I have shot previously IMovie worked perfectly.
On the last 3 movies imported from the camera, I movie loads the preview and I can drag it into the stage but instead of opening up and showing all of the clips, it remains a single image exactly as it displays in the playlist
Nothing I click opens the frames.  Thus the only want to edit is to open the file into the fine editing frame
But this is not as easy as it was before where I could see the clip and make the edits right there on the stage.
What has changed?   What am I doing wrong?

  • Automatic importing of videos from iphoto killing me!

    hello there folks,
I recently purchased an imac and am having problems in imovie. When I open the application, it automatically looks for videos to import from my iphoto library and it is killing me! I have hundreds of iphoto videos and it just sits there looking for hours with the spinning icon in the events window and I cannot do anything else. I have gone to the preferences but cannot find a way for it not to import videos from iphoto automatically when I launch the app. I do not need my iphoto videos in my events library and would prefer to do it manually. Is there anyway to stop this? Is this common or does my machine have a problemo?
thanks so much. I even left it overnight and it is just sitting there looking for video like a drooling zombie.

iMovie will automatically scan and generate thumbnails for any movies you have added to iPhoto upon launch. If you don't want it to go through that cycle (which should only happen when you add new movies, not every time you launch), remove the movies from iPhoto.
You can easily remove all the movies from iPhoto by doing the following:
    1.) Launch iPhoto
2.) Go to File > New Smart Album
3.) Set the Smart Album to use the following parameters: "Photo" "is" "Movie"
__This will gather all the movies into one place
4.) Make a new folder on the desktop
5.) Drag all the movies from the Smart Album you created to the folder on the desktop. This will copy them out of iPhoto.
6.) Highlight all the movies in the smart album and press command + option + delete.
__This will delete all the movies.
__Now you can open iMovie and it will not have any iPhoto videos to index.
__In the future when you import movies to iPhoto, immediately drag them out and delete them to avoid this behavior in the future.
    Hope that helps.

  • Unable to import movie files from iphoto '08 into imovie HD

I have recently bought a 2008 macbook (2.2 GHz) and have recently downloaded imovie HD in addition to owning iLife '08 due to its extra capabilities. I have found that I am unable to import any of my movie files from my iphoto library folder as it seems to need to open the actual iphoto application before the files can be accessed. In addition, when not using any specific program it would be nice to be able to access my photo/video files within the iphoto folder without iphoto automatically opening as the default viewer.
    Any ideas??!! Thanks.

.. and I import AVI video clips directly without converting to .dv, without problems.
lucky you.. .avi is just a container, no 'format'/codec .. I can show you dozends of .avis, which will NOT import into iMHD6, due to being playback-codecs, not convertable by the underlying Quicktime engine into separte, editable audio+video streams ..
.. If you convert to .dv, the size just blows up.
dv is 13GB/h and a codec meant for editing; e.g. it stores every frame (video=30 frams/sec) of a recording, as mpegs usually doesn't do so.. = your Mac has to estimate content, when converting and 'recovering' the content = lossy process.
iMHD6 is a dv-editor; the mpeg4 feature is only a toy, to spice up iSight recordings.. for sure, the QTengine can convert a lot, but too much conversion (from one lossy codec, e.g. divx, into another, e.g. mp4) means a (dramatic) loss of pic quality..
    my 5€ cents ..

I would like to know this too. I imported a lot of files, then Imovie crashed. I went back in and they are not in imovie at all.
I reconnected the camcorder to import again and though they are still on the camcorder, I no longer see them in the available list of files to import. I'm sure there is some sort of simple setting somewhere that reveals all files even if it thinks they are imported.
