Tiny previews in Import window

I sometimes get full size previews in the import window (when I double click on a picture in the grid), but usually they are tiny and get extremely pixelated when I try to make them bigger. This makes it very difficult to decide if a picture is good enough to import. Help please.

From a workflow standpoint - I import all my images then make my decisions about keeping or culling from the Library.  Better images, faster workflow

  • Can't see NEF thumbnails in preview in import window - Nikon D90

    Hi,
I am trying to import photos from my Nikon D90 using File/Import photos from device. When I check the preview option, I see jpegs, but not the NEFs/RAWs.
Any ideas why this would be?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Importing directly from a camera has some extra quirks. What happens when you use a card reader?
Does your OS show previews in Finder/Explorer?

  • Preview of CR2 raw files on import window from camera

    Hi
I have this problem with my Canon XTI. When I connect the camera to the computer and open the import dialog window, I can not see the previews of my CR2 raw files. But if I copy the CR2 files to he hard disk and try tho import from it, then previews are shown on the import window.
    Can anybody help me?

Probably because the program is trying to write back a marker to the card as it "opens" the images for the preview and the camera won't let it.
It's not a good idea to import images directly from the camera anyway. Card readers are really cheap - and they WILL let you see the previews.

  • Can Lightroom render 1:1 Previews when importing my Photos?

Q: Can Lightroom render 1:1 Previews when importing my Photos?
    FAQ revised 25 April 2009
Ans: Prior to version 1.3 Lightroom did not support 1:1 preview rendering during import, the actual options for  Initial Previews being:  Embedded or  Standard. However, more recent versions allow four types of previews to be rendered during import (i.e.  Minimal, Embedded & Sidecar, Standard, and  1:1). It's also worth noting the following on Lightroom import behaviour:
    1.  Minimal (Lightroom default) or Embedded & Sidecar is by far the quickest method for getting your photos into the Lightroom catalog. However, the lack of Standard, which is the minimum that Lightroom can actually work with, means that the application will render standard-sized on demand (i.e. as thumbs/photos become visible within the photo Content area). Asking Lightroom to undertake this task at the same time as you're trying to use the application will result in sub optimal performance.
    2. Importing your photos with the  Standard preview selected within the Import dialog will take longer than 1 above, but on completion Lightroom will already have previews that match the minimum requirement for working in the Library. Assuming that you won't be looking at every image at 100% (i.e 1:1) then this preview size will allow you to quickly review, rate, label, even make quick colour/tone adjustments, etc the photos within the Library module. If you need to see a photo at 100% then Lightroom will render that preview on demand (while it's being rendered you'll see the "Rendering Preview" overlay appear at bottom of preview).  Note that when using a 23" or larger monitor it to is best to set the Standard sized previews so that they are rendered at 2048 pixels
    3. Importing your photos with the  1:1 preview size selected will result in Lightroom taking even longer to complete the import process than would have been the case if standard-sized had been chosen. 1:1 previews also take up significantly more disk space than standard-sized.
If you're not going to be working on the photos immediately after import but do need to get them into Lightroom as quickly as possible, then the best option would be to choose import option 1. Once the photos have been imported choose either  Render Standard-sized Previews or  Render 1:1 previews from Library module Library>Previews menu.

When I search these forums for "CFCopyFormattingDescription", I find a bunch of crash reports posted that look almost exactly the same as mine.  It appears there's a bug in iPhoto, perhaps when reading metadata from the JPG file (readRawTiffPropsFromPath).
Interestingly, the Preview app can open and display the file just fine.  I even opened the inspector and it showed all of the TIFF and exif metadata just fine, no crash.  The file also opens just fine on Windows.
Now how do we get the attention of the iPhoto development team so I can send them the photos, have them reproduce the crash, and fix it?

  • No previews on import.

    Aperture 3.6, Mac os X 10.10.1
Some time age previews on import partly dissapeared.
Trying to delete plist, completely remove aperture, creating new library. Nothing helped.
Only some first images showing, other no. Check attached image.
    Photo system - nikon.
    What can i do?

So the problem is restricted to your user account and not system wide. Then try to find out, what is different in your user account and try to fix the differences.
Did you install any helper application, that are not launched, when you work from a different user account?  Any helper, that lets you select which application to open, when a camera is connected, for example?
Compare the user login items in the System Preferences > Users&Groups for the Guest user and your current user. Are there differences?
Another possibility are incompatible preferences files the user library.
Quit Aperture and remove the following files from the User Library:
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.ImageCapture2.some_weird_combination_of_l etters.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist
    ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Import Presets.plist
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Aperture/
Your user library may still be hidden.
To open the hidden User Library:
Click somewhere on the empty Desktop to bring the Finder forward.
    Use the Finder's "Go" menu.
Click "Go", then hold down the options key, until you are seeing "Library" in the drop down menu appear and click it.
In the Finder window that will open navigate to the folders Preferences and Containers and remove the files.
Is is essential to restart the Mac after removing preferences files.

  • Thumbnails on Import Window

You know how, when you import images from your camera (Rebel XTi), thumbnail previews of those images show up on the import window?
Well... I'm not sure what happened, but they don't show up anymore. I don't know if it's a software problem or if it's my camera. Or is it because I'm using Aperture on a MacBook...?
Anyone know how to fix this?
    - Thanks.
     MacBook 13-inch: White   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo | 1GB memory | 80GB hard drive | Wireless Mighty Mouse

Firstly, I don't think the issue is a corrupt plist, but it's any easy thing to check.
plists hold the application's user preferences and can be trashed with impunity, provided you know the settings (you'll have to reapply your preferences).
Why plists get corrupt is beyond me, that they do is factual and seemingly more common that we would expect.
If the plist is missing, Aperture will create a brand new default one. So...
Make a note of your preferences in Aperture.
    Quit Aperture.
In Finder, go to user/Library/Preferences/ and delete com.apple.Aperture.plist
In Finder, go to your Aperture Library (usually in Pictures folder).
Double-click the Aperture Library.aplibrary file to launch Aperture (this will set the library file in your preferences for you).
    Reapply your preferences.
Try importing and see whether the thumbnails render.
This issue has been mentioned before so you are not alone. Maybe do a search on "thumbnails"
I would still try using Canon's Imagebrowser to migrate the RAW's from the camera to a folder on your disk. Then see if Aperture import sees the thumbnails successfully when you import them from disk.
Best practice is to use a card reader .... no chance of batteries going flat part way through an import and no chance of dropping your SLR on the floor because it was perched precariously on the desk by the side of your display. Also card readers are faster, much faster if it is a firewire one ... and cheap.
Best practice would also IMO be to copy from card reader to a folder on disk and then burn to DVD. This cuts down the data movements to a minimum before you get a stable archival backup. Then after burning to DVD, import from the folder into Aperture. It adds a few minutes up front, but you already have your backup finished.

  • Thumbnails in Import Window Empty for Nikon D90

I recently acquired a Nikon D90 and it is working well with Aperture except in one regard. When I turn the camera on and the import window appears the thumbnails are always empty (just the dashed outline shows). I don't see this with my other cameras. I had hoped yesterdays update to Camera Raw support might fix it but it did not.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

I have the same problem but it seems to be linked to whether you shoot in RAW or RAW+JPG. If you go for the later you get the thumbnail preview. For RAW only you get nothing. I'm assuming the thumbnail is only referencing the JPG.

  • IMovie08 import ceases:  import window remains blue; controls still work

I'll be importing HDV video clips just fine. Then I'll try to import the next clip as usual by clicking the controls in the import window...the camcorder will correctly play...but this time the import window remains blue: no image is shown and no importing happens. The controls work perfectly so the connection between camcorder and iMovie seems perfect. iMovie suddenly just cannot see any image.
I've tried everything I could find recommended in posts here and elsewhere. The only reliable way to remedy the problem is to reboot the Mac, but that works only temporarily. After rebooting everything works perfectly...for 10 to 20 minutes, then the problem reoccurs.
    These are unlikely root causes:
    * Hardware is a 3-week old MacPro with giant RAM and storage
    * Software is the latest OS release and latest iMovie08 release, 7.1.4
    * Camcorder is a 2-month old Sony HC9, set to output in HDV mode
    * I've tried ad nauseum unplugging/replugging the firewire, turning off/on the camcorder, and quitting/restarting iMovie...to no effect.
I'd sure value your help. I have another hour or more to import and this is killing me.

The information that I found suggested that the Mac identifies the format of the video device connected to the firewire as soon as it is plugged in, and then retains that setting until the next reboot. If there is nothing playing, the camera will tell the Mac that it is a PAL recorder and the Mac will then only expect to capture PAL formated video. If an NTSC video is playing then the Mac will identify the correct format for the capture, keeping that setting for the firewire until reboot.
Because the setting is at the hardware and OS level it will effect all capture software, but different software will handle it differently and produce different errors. iMovie '08 says nothing and just pretends to import with a blue screen, Final Cut says Preview Disabled, and iMovie '06 says something about getting half-sized frames during the capture and not being able to import.

  • Render previews on import meaningless?

Normally LR only renders previews once for a folder. That means, if you ask it to create them for a folder where they are already rendered, LR does not render them again.
    Observation on a Windows-LR:
Import a folder, check render previews on Import.
After that ask LR to render the previews for this folder manually. It renders them for the whole folder again.
    Now we have to possibilities:
1.) LR does not render previews on import, even if asked so
2.) LR forgets that it has already rendered the previews and does it again.
Could anyone from the LR Team issue a statement regarding this?
    Thank you.

Lightroom shows a progress indicator on top. After finishing importing the previews should have been generated.
Besides this, the import has been done several days/weeks ago, and lightroom would have had plenty of time to render since then. :-)
I don't think, rendering of previews is a background process (without progress indicator) like automatically writing xmp is.

  • Preview and logging window in FCE 4.0 HD

    Hi Everyone,
    Just a quick question:
I'm learning FCE from the Diana Weynand book at the moment.
My problem is I don't see the Preview and Logging windows when I am capturing from my Canon XH A1s.
    I'm using FCE 4.0 HD.
    SL 10.6.8
    Canon XH A1s
    2008 24" iMac.
    Thanks in advance.
    Michael.

When capturing HDV with FCE you will only have a simplified capture window and clips will be broken at the shot changes after capture.
    This is normal.
Capturing DV will give you the Capture window with more features.

  • Preview and TextEdit windows continuously lose focus

Preview and TextEdit windows keep losing focus.
In other words, I select the window, but them moments later it deselects itself (title and traffic light buttons grey out).
The app's menu is still visible (ie it still appears as if Preview or TextEdit is the active app).
But if I do single-app-expose, no windows appear at all and I just see a blank screen (ie as if the app doesn't have any windows open at all).
So it's almost as if the app isn't aware it even has windows open?
Anyone else have this? Any ideas for a fix?

I'm not sure of the name or if it is even accessable from system monitor.  I had the same issue with the daemon relanching the app and ended up uninstalling everything until there is a fix.  I believe the last update is from 2009 so it's not in active development and chances of an expedited fix aren't great.  I wrote an email to axiotron the same day as my oruginal post here and have not received a response yet.
While a complete uninstall is more of a trade off than a solution it may be the only 'fix' for the time being.  To uninstall you may need to run an app from within the installation dvd or disk image.
I'm not near my mac right now but will double check some things in a bit and post if I discover anything new and useful.  In the mean time you can check for options within your app that may disablethe  autostart feature.  This doesn't exist in Quickscripts so I was forced to either uninstall or deal with the bug and not use textedit and preview.....I chose to uninstall of course.

  • I'm trying to import some Hi8 into FCPX via a Canon GL2.  Although the footage shows up in the import window, it says "Camera not controllable".  The manual import button does activate, but footage is not actually being imported.  Any ideas?  Thanks

    What Tom said.
Or you may be able to import using a different program - try with Quicktime Player, "New Movie Recording". If the camera appears as an option, it should work.

I was viewing a page online, and somehow it zoomed out so that the page is now tiny in the browser window. I've shut down all my windows and rebooted my computer, but every time I return to that page, it is still tiny. I've looked for a button to control the zoom, but cannot find anything. How do I zoom back out so the page is the correct size again?

  • IMovie '13: Import window does not open

I can't get the Import Window to open. (Sure it worked the first time I tried)
    Anyone with same problem?
    Anyone with a possible solution?
No matter if I press Import in the toolbar or use the menu (cmd I) the main window will dim, but the overlaying Import Window will not open.
After that I can only quit the program. I can drag and drop movie files without problems.
The only way the Import Window will open is to attach my camera. The Import Window will open automatically when iMovie sees the drive.
I have tried to re-install iMovie and deleted preference files, but with no succes so far.

I managed to locate the problem
I have an Elgato EyeTV 610. It is an old DVB-C TV Tuner hooked up on Firewire.
When I remove the EyeTV 610 from the Firewireport it works fine.
As mentioned in my first posting I was able to have the import window pop up by attaching my camera.
The workaround also works when pluggin in my iPhone (Import window pops up automatically)
