TIP: custom arrowheads in CS5

Custom arrowheads can be added to Illustrator.
Edit the file arrowheads.ai according to the instructions in it. It can be found here (or similar on your system)
\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS5\Support Files\Required\Resources\en_GB
The following was made using 4 strokes, 3 of which have a my new custom arrowhead:

I love the new arrowheads interface, however:
When I create an arrowhead, then save and close the file, the next time I open it the arrowhead is now a separate (but grouped) object, and is a filled shape with no stroke. This is really annoying!

No custom easing in CS5

In this documentation it says that flash CS5 should support custom easing, just like old good CS3 and earlier versions of flash
however, this feature seems to be missing from CS5. it says:
Click the Edit button next to the Ease slider in the frame Property inspector.
but there is no "edit button" in the panel with easing slider.

however, the new motion tweener is very clumsy and unintuitive, i even had problems finding out how to display more frames, not just `current curve position at the current frame`. mix it with the new non-ergonomic cs5 panel layout and it's a complete mess to work with.
in the guide i also noticed that there is an option to use the old stuff, when we create `classic tween` instead of `motion tween`, so i will be using the `classic tween` option, thanks!

Help a novice! Embedding Custom Font in CS5

Hi!
Can someone help me understand how to embed a font in Dreamweaver CS5?
A quick google search reveals instructions for embedding custom fonts in older versions of Dreamweaver but not recent ones... Is this because its somehow automated in CS5? I'm not really sure what to do! Thanks for any help!

You don't embed fonts into Dreamweaver. You embed fonts into your web pages with CSS.
You will need to find a suitable font. Not all commercial fonts can be embedded without violating copyrights. Read the fine print in your license very carefully.

Is this LPC different than the Custom correction in CS5?

Sorry, I'm having trouble discerning if this Lens Profile Creator is different than the Custom lens correction tab I already have in Photoshop CS5?
Also, my intial reason for looking was I'm trying to find a lens correction for the iPhone 4's front-facing camera. I have definitions for the 3G, 3GS, and the 4 back-facing - but not the front.

LPC creates profiles for the Auto Correction tab not the Custom Correction tab of the Lens Correction filter.

Transfer Custom Workspaces to CS5.5...

Does anyone know of a way to copy over our custom workspaces from Production Suite CS5 to CS 5.5? Is there a way?

One would think that being part of the same Production Suite, the process would be identical. As it turns out, it is similar but the xml files are instead found in the Users/Userxxx/Library/Preferences/Adobe/After Effects /10.0/ModifiedWorspaces and OriginalUserWorkspaces. Copy the contents of these to the corresponding 10.5 folders.

Can`t manage my custom workspaces in CS5 Ai after importing CS4 workspaces

Here is the folder I pasted my workspaces in from CS4
on XP to Ai CS5 on WIN7
then a screenshot of what my CS5 Ai workspace drop down list looks like...
and last a screen shot of the manage workspace dialogue box...
When I choose manage workspaces from that workspace list in Ai, it doesnt allow me to move my custom workspaces to the top of the list where the two topmost workspaces are ?

I didnt explain myself correctly actually
i`m trying to get my CS5 prefs copied from XP to be manageable on CS5 for windows 7.
Originally I copy pasted my workspaces from Ai cs4 on XP to Ai CS5 on XP which worked fine,
then from there to Ai CS5 on Win7 into I believe the correct folder below, presets/workspaces, so it intermingled with the default CS5 workspace settings.
However on win7 they show up in the workspaces menu allright in mixed order, but not in the personal custom sets which are supposed to appear separately at the top of the workspaces drop down menu..
the result being when I choose "manage workspaces" I only get the following..not all my custom workspaces are showing..

Set Arrowheads in CS5

I have a project that uses many arrows. Is there a way, in CS5, to set the arrowhead for repeated use? Repeatedly selecting the arrowhead, direction and head thickness is time comsuming.

If you create the arrows all at once or most of them after making your other art then you can from the flyout menu of the appearance panel uncheck the default settings of New Art Has Basic Appearance. each time there after the next art you create will have the same appearance such as an arrow head withe specific size head.
so if you make graphic styles of various arrowhead settings the last one you select will automatically be applied to the next path you create.
If you don't then check the New Art Has Basic Appearance it will drive you crazy as it will continue to apply the style until you do something to change the appearance so test his out before unchecking the option and make a good workflow.

Customer Service on CS5 Master Suites

I spent 6hrs on the phone with Tech Support & Customer Service.
I purchased the CS5 Creative Suite Master Collection upgrade. I purchased it from a Adobe Authorized large company that carries PC and Mac sofware. The issue I have a 32 bit IMAC and the Adobe Premier and After Effects would not install on the system. Everything else updated fine to the CS5. Tech support had me do everything from setting up a new user reinstalling running the disk utility and on numerous phone calls to his senior tech rep.
Finally he said download the CS5 trial on these two programs and then just type in my serial number and the program will install fine. That didn't work and back to tech support more time wasted. The tech support said to call Customer Service and they will send the CS4 Adobe Premier and After Effects because it should of been shipped inside the box. Then Customer Service said it should of been shipped in the box another Customer Service rep no its not included, Tech Support yes it is included and said talk with Customer Service and they will give you a link to download the software. The last Customer Service Rep said it should of been shipped but since I did not purchase the software directly from the Abobe store website that they could not help me and they can not locate my serial number and can not help me. The Customer Service Rep also quoted that resellers like MACMA** and the other companies are not reliable sellers of abobe products.
I guess since you buy a product not from the adobe store and save yourself a few dollars that Adobe can't help.
Maybe Adobe should send out info so Tech Support, Customer Service all has the same info. You spend around 1,300 and this is the Customer Service Adobe gives you. Great work Adobe you really know how to treat customers!

Yes I understand the Adobe Premier and After effects in CS5 run on 64 bit only - but the 4 adobe Techs and 3 out of the 6 customer service reps said that a CD for CS4 for Adobe Premier and After effects comes with the CS5 suite. They said that their are so many adobe customers with 32 bit so that is why it should of been included in the CS5 master suite. Some of them are telling me that that their should of been a separate DVD

How can I find my custom panel in CS5 using java script

-I made an empty panel using Adobe Configurator 2 and then exported it to /Panels folder.
-My custom panel is now in photoshop and works.
-I added a simple code to onPanelInit():

I know that you can add the text in Configurator, or you can edit the .xml file and add the button there, but my
plan is to create a panel where i can add and remove buttons dynamically and that's why I have to do that in java.
Any help would be appreciated!

Use Runtime.exec() to run a OS specific command which retrieves OS specific info.
Or use JNI to access a OS specific API which returns the info you want.

How would I create a layer ABOVE a custom cursor? [CS5 Pro]

...so the custom cursor would disappear behind the layer when moved across it.
Currently if the layer is simply put at the top of the layer list [above the mouse cursor layer] when published the mouse cursor supersedes it and appears above all layers... not behind any

First, try removing that first line and see if it helps.
Second, if it doesn't help, after that line do the same for whatever object you have in the layer you want to sit above the cursor... it'll need to be objects that you can target with code.
What addChild() does is it takes the object being targeted and places at the top of the display list. So that first line is essentially uprooting whytehand from the timeline and placing it above all other content planted in the timeline. So either you don't use it, or you also use it to place the other content above the cursor.

Tips to make Photoshop CS5 a lot faster?

I have been having a lot of issues with my PS CS5, it is behaving very slowly and I really have no idea why, I always thought that CS5 would be running a lot faster (because of 64bit) than CS4...CS4 was much slower than CS3 which I had really no problem with. So with photoshop CS5 even really basic operations are extremely slow, loike moving inside a document, selecting brushes, lapse of time for the brushes to appear...very basic stuff and that happens on double layer files (1400x900), so on very small files
At first I thought it was because it wasn't detecting my video card (which I found was because of my secondary 24" 1920x1200 monitor).
Here is my hardware:
Macbook pro 3,1
2.2GHz Core 2 Duo 4mb l2 cache
2GB 667MHz DDR2 RAM (2x1GB)
120GB 5400rpm HDD (set up as 2nd Scratch disk)
WD 1 TB 7200RPM (2 partitions) FireWire800 hard drive (1 partition as 1st scratch disk)
1248mb Memory usage for PS
History states:100
Cache Level:4
Cache Tile size: 128k
Also When designing the only other applications that are open are iTunes (to listen to music, an absolute must when designing! ) and Mail.
So my problem is I bought CS5 and I swear in front of my computer because it is so slow! I understand my computer isn't the most recent one but the operation I ask it t do aren't all that bad...moving a document shouldn't make PS lag and take forever...
By the way I do use some of the most recent PS CS5 features so I can't go back to CS3 even if it worked much better...
What can I do? Please help me!

Not for nothing, but when I hear people complaining about how slow the current Photoshop is on recent hardware, I have to laugh...my fist big iron machine was a Daystar Genesis which had 4 processors. I put a whopping 512MB of ram in the machine that cost $17,000 (yes, 17K) but that was mitigated by putting in a second 512MB for only $7,500 (the price had dropped...
In the old days, Photoshop performance was a matter of hours/days not minutes/seconds...when you worked on a big file in Photoshop 2.5, you did a lot of work to optimize Photoshop and minimize the processor clicks lost to other processors. Launch Activity Monitor and see how many processes are running under OS X. A ton...many unneeded and unwanted for running Photoshop. Are you running ONLY Photoshop? Or do you have ram/processor hogs like iTunes or Safari running at the same time? How many images do you open and work with at a single time? Open 2 images and Photoshop's ram debt doubles...open up 4 images and it more than quadruples...
There are three basic bottlenecks in Photoshop and if you want to speed them up, you need to address each and every one. First and foremost is processor speed (and multi-processors up to a point where you get diminishing returns) but even with the fastest CPU's if you starve the processor of ram when you open a bigger image, you still slow down. The last one is pretty important if you are hitting your scratch disk and that's disk I/O...
So, the basics of speeding Photoshop are; fast processor, lots of ram and a separate fast drive for scratch disk...then make sure you are only running Photoshop and not a bunch of other crap in the background and open only as many images as you absolutely need. If your machine is bogging down the odds are one or more of the above needs to be addressed. It's possible that some 3rd party software (plug-ins or drivers like a tablet) is bringing down your overall performance...it's advisable to have everything on your system as up to date as possible (after leaving a week or two for "other people" to flush out the problems).
If you are in doubt about your ram (and 2 gigs is literally nothing these days) launch Activity Monitor and watch the free ram graphic. If you are routinely dropping below 100 MBs of free ram (not allocated by any other process) the odds are real good you are seeing slowdowns and SBODs because you are forcing the system to page data which slows things down a lot-particularly if your boot drive is also your Photoshop scratch drive because you have two things competing for the same drive. It's optimal to have a fast second drive just for Photoshop scratch disks.
If you have less that all the ram your computer can hold, that's prolly the cheapest and most cost efficient place to spend money to speed Photoshop short of getting an all new system, ram and tons of fast hard drives...

Custom Brushes CS4/CS5

I have been trying to create a brush that looks like a REAL marker. Looking at my image you can see the issue I am having. Top image is a real marker scan. Middle/left image is a calligraphic brush in illustrator. Bottom image is what I used to create my art brush. Middle/Right image is what I got after applying the art brush to middle/left path in Illustrator.
I am looking for something that behaves like a calligraphic brush but has the texture of an art brush. Is this possible in Illustrator?
Oh and it’s not the non-zero winding fill rule.

Neither ArtBrushes nor Pattern Brushes are going to give you the direction-dependent scaling (relative to the spine path) of a CalligraphicBrush.
Pattern brush would probably be your best bet. That way you can set the interior as well as both end caps.
In CS5, you can set an ArtBrush to scale only the region between two guides specified in the Art Brush Options dialog, thereby not scaling the "ends." But this still does not give you the "keep-aligned-to-page" behavior of a Calligraphic Brush.

You are also going to encounter the mitering problem inherent in ArtBrushes. ArtBrushes don't make sharp direction changes very elegantly, as you can see in your middle-right image. Even if you do concoct an ArtBrush that you find satisfactory, it's usually best to break the spine path at sharp corners.
Why kick against the thorns? This kind of thing is still best done in a raster program. Corel Painter (Originally Fractal Design Painter) would be a good choice. If you insist on its being done as vector paths, you might take a look at Microsoft Expression Design (originally Fractal Design Expression). I don't recall whether it can make its "Expression Strokes" stay oriented to the page as they are stretched along the spine path; it's been a while since I messed with it.

Cached Custom Captions in CS5

Hello everyone,
It seems that Captivate 5 is caching every single custom caption and button I create. Is there any other way to update them other than renaming the original file? The type scrolldowns are ridiculously populated in my current project... :S

You are correct in your thinking that the captions will only
be available to you. Basically, I believe you have two options
here.
1. Methodically copy them to all other developers'
workstations so they are available.
2. Create a Captivate template, then share the template by
copying it to all other developers' workstations. I believe that
the captions are cached in the project file of the template and
therefore available for subsequent use when building projects from
the template.

TIP: solid planes in CS5 perspective drawing

I noticed in the sample file that the guide-planes for the perspective grid are drawn as solid planes.
Investigating, I found that the settings are stored in the text file "Perspective Grid Presets" in the
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS5 Settings\en_GB directory (Win7)
Changing the values of the following to 1 in a preset (identifying takes some intelligence since they have no clear names)
/PerspectiveGrid_FloorPlaneVisibilityState 1
/PerspectiveGrid_RightPlaneVisibilityState 1
/PerspectiveGrid_LeftPlaneVisibilityState 1
gives you a perspective grid like this:
I keep now two presets of perspective grids with exactly the same settings, except the option above. Allows for easy switching between the two views.
If anyone has a way to set these options in the GUI please post.

Using the Perspective Grid tool or Perspective Selection tool, Option/Alt click on one of the three circles at the bottom of the grid plane. This will cycle between grid lines, solid colors, and no visible grid.
